Helping children recognise when a problem is too big to face alone—and how to ask for support with confidence and calm.
In this final episode of our Emotional Problem Solving series, Miss Harrison guides children through one of the most important skills of all: asking for help. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, confused, or stuck, it's okay to speak up—and it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
Through the gentle and relatable story of Emma, who feels frustrated with a maths challenge, children learn that trusted adults—like teachers, family members or carers—are there to help. With support, big problems can feel smaller and solutions can become clearer. What Children Will Learn:
- How to recognise when a problem is too big to handle alone
- That asking for help is a powerful and brave decision
- How to find and talk to a trusted adult
- Why teamwork and support build emotional resilience
Miss Harrison’s Top Tips:
- Check in with yourself: Does the problem feel too hard or upsetting to fix on your own?
- Find a helper: Talk to someone you trust—like a teacher, parent, carer or school staff member.
- Use your words: Calmly say, “I need help with something,” or “Can I talk to you about a problem?”
- Remember: Everyone needs help sometimes. Asking shows courage and wisdom.
Mindful Moment Challenge:
This week, if you feel stuck, upset, or unsure what to do—pause and ask a trusted adult for help. Practice using kind, clear words. Notice how it feels to be supported.
Perfect for:
- Primary school-aged children learning emotional regulation
- Families teaching healthy emotional habits at home
- Teachers and pastoral staff delivering PSHE or SEL lessons
- Mental health and wellbeing leads in schools
Quote of the Week:
“Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say, ‘I need help.’”
