What Makes You Special – Building Confidence and Self-Esteem in Children

Helping children recognise their unique strengths, build self-belief, and develop positive self-esteem.

In this opening episode of Series 9: Building Confidence and Self-Esteem, children explore one of the most important questions of all: What makes you special? Through gentle reflection and a powerful story, children begin to understand that their uniqueness is something to celebrate—not compare.

Through Mia’s story, children learn that being special isn’t about being the best at everything. It’s about recognising the qualities that make them who they are—kindness, creativity, resilience, and the ways they care for others.

This episode supports children in building a strong foundation of self-worth, helping them to feel proud of who they are and confident in what they bring to the world.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • Why every child is unique and valuable
  • How to recognise their own strengths and positive qualities
  • The importance of self-acceptance over comparison
  • How reflecting on personal strengths builds confidence

Confidence Skills from Miss Harrison:

  • Think about what you love: Notice activities that make you feel happy and confident
  • Recognise how you help others: Kindness, listening, teamwork and creativity all matter
  • Ask others for perspective: Trusted people can help you see your strengths clearly
  • Celebrate yourself: Being yourself is your greatest strength

These strategies help children build a positive self-image and develop lasting self-esteem.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

Create a “sparkle list”. Each day, add one new thing that makes you special—something you’re proud of, something you enjoy, or a way you help others. By the end of the week, you’ll have a powerful reminder of how amazing you are.

Perfect for:

  • Primary school-aged children developing confidence and self-worth
  • Classrooms exploring PSHE, SEL, or personal development
  • Families supporting positive self-talk and emotional wellbeing
  • Teachers and pastoral leaders building self-esteem in children

Quote of the Week:

“There is no one else in the world exactly like you—and that is your greatest strength.”

Hello everyone and welcome to a brand new series of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here as we begin our Building Confidence and Self -Esteem series. Over the next few episodes we'll be talking about how to feel proud of who you are, how to believe in yourself and how to shine your very brightest. Today we're starting with something really important. What makes you special? By the end of this episode you'll see just how wonderful and unique you truly are.

Let's get started. Every single person in the world is different, like a one -of -a -kind star in the sky. Your thoughts, your talents, your kindness, your dreams. These are the things that make you special. Knowing what makes you special helps you to feel proud of who you are, understand your strengths, and believe that you have something amazing to share with the world. Let's hear a story about someone who discovered just how special they were.

Mia sometimes compared herself to her classmates. She would think, Sam is faster than me. Or, Ella draws better pictures. One day her teacher brought a shiny mirror into class and said, this is a magic mirror. It shows what makes you truly special inside. Each child looked into the mirror and shared something wonderful about themselves.

Sam said, I'm great at cheering people up. Ella said, I'm good at helping others learn. When it was Mia's turn, she thought carefully. Then she smiled and said, I'm a really good friend who listens and cares. and the mirror seemed to shine even brighter. Mia realized that her

kindness was a special gift that made her sparkle in her own way. What else do you think Mia learned about herself? Just like Mia, you can discover what makes you special by looking inside yourself. Here's how. First, think about what you love. What activities make you feel happy and excited?

Next, notice how you help others. Are you a good listener, a kind teammate, a creative thinker? And finally, ask someone you trust. Sometimes others can see the special things in us that we forget to notice. Being special isn't about being the best at everything. It's about being you, exactly as you are.

What is one thing you really love about yourself? Let's create a sparkle list. Think about three things that make you special. They could be talents, personality traits, or even things you care about deeply. Try finishing my sentences. People say I am.

You can write your sparkle list down, decorate it with drawings or stickers, and keep it somewhere you can see it whenever you need a reminder of how amazing you truly are. You've done a wonderful job today discovering what makes you special. Remember, you are unique, important, and full of wonderful qualities. Being proud of who you are helps you feel confident and strong. There is no one else in the world exactly like you, and that's a beautiful thing. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week.

Add one new thing to your sparkle list each day. By the end of the week, you'll have a list full of reminders about how incredible you are. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, we'll talk about talking to yourself kindly and how the way you speak to yourself matters just as much as how you speak to others. I can't wait to see you then. Thank you for joining me today. Keep believing in yourself, keep celebrating your sparkle, and as always, keep shining.
