Helping children develop courage, resilience, and confidence by taking small brave steps.
In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, children explore what it really means to be brave. Courage is not about being fearless—it’s about trying even when something feels difficult, new, or a little bit scary.
Through Layla’s story, children learn that bravery often begins with one small step. Whether climbing a tall wall, trying something new, or speaking up, courage grows each time we choose to keep going despite our fears.
This episode supports children in building resilience and confidence by helping them understand that feeling nervous is normal—and that bravery comes from action, not perfection.
What children will learn in this episode:
- What courage really means in everyday life
- Why feeling nervous or scared is completely normal
- How taking small steps helps build confidence
- That bravery grows each time we try something new
Confidence Skills from Miss Harrison:
- Feel the fear: Recognise that nervous feelings are a natural part of trying something new
- Take one small step: Start small and build confidence gradually
- Use kind self-talk: Encourage yourself with supportive, positive words
- Celebrate effort: Every brave step matters, no matter how big or small
These strategies help children build resilience, perseverance, and a strong sense of self-belief.
Mindful Moment Challenge:

Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for another episode in our Building Confidence and Self -Esteem series. Last time we talked about talking to yourself kindly. How the words you say to yourself can help you feel stronger, happier and proud of who you are. Did you try your Mindful Moment challenger this week? I hope you caught yourself being kind and encouraging in your thoughts.
Today we're going to talk about something every brave person knows. Facing challenges with courage. By the end of this episode you'll know how to find your inner bravery and keep going even when things feel tough. Let's get started. When you hear the word courage you might think of superheroes flying through the sky but real courage is something even more amazing. It's choosing to try even when you feel nervous, unsure or scared.
Courage is trying something new even if it feels tricky, standing up for yourself or someone else. Keeping going when something doesn't work right away. Courage doesn't mean you're never afraid. It means you feel the fear and do it anyway. Let's hear a story about someone who found their courage. Layla loved playing at the playground, but there was one thing she had never tried.
The tall climbing wall. Every time she looked up at it, her stomach filled with butterflies. She thought, what if I can't do it? What if I fall? One day, she decided to take just one step, then another, and another. Even though her heart was pounding, Leila kept going slowly and carefully.
When she reached the top, she smiled the biggest smile she'd ever smiled. Leila realised that courage wasn't about climbing without fear. It was about climbing even though she felt afraid. What else do you think Leila learned about courage? Just like Leila, you can find your courage too.
Here's how. Feel the fear. It's okay to feel nervous or scared. Those feelings are normal. Take one small step. You don't have to do everything at once.
just start with one brave move and celebrate your effort. Whether you reach the top or just take a few steps, being brave is something to be proud of. Courage grows every time you choose to keep going, even when it's hard. What's something you'd like to be really brave about this week? Let's do a courage countdown to get ready for facing a challenge. Three deep breaths to calm your mind.
Two kind words you say to yourself like, I am strong or I can try. And one small brave step you take forward. Whether it's speaking in front of your class, trying a new sport, or making a new friend, you can use the courage countdown anytime you need a little boost. You've done a wonderful job today learning about facing challenges with courage. Remember, courage means feeling afraid but trying anyway. Taking small brave steps helps you grow stronger.
Every time you choose to be brave, you build your confidence. So here's your mindful moment challenge for the week. Think of something you've been nervous to try and take one small brave step toward it. Remember it's not about being perfect, it's about being brave enough to begin. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison we'll talk about learning from mistakes, how every mistake can be a stepping stone to something wonderful. I can't wait to see you then.
Thank you for joining me today. Keep being brave, keep taking steps and as always keep shining bright.
