Learning from Mistakes – Building Resilience and a Growth Mindset

Helping children understand that mistakes are a powerful part of learning, growth, and confidence-building.

In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, children explore how mistakes are not something to fear—but something to learn from. When children begin to see mistakes as part of their journey, they become more confident, resilient, and willing to try new things.

Through Finn’s story, children discover how one mistake can lead to a better understanding and a stronger result. By reflecting, adjusting, and trying again, Finn learns that every mistake is a stepping stone to success.

This episode supports children in developing a growth mindset, helping them understand that learning happens through effort, reflection, and persistence.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • Why mistakes are a natural and important part of learning
  • How to respond positively when something goes wrong
  • The value of reflection and trying again
  • How mistakes help build resilience and confidence

Confidence Skills from Miss Harrison:

  • Pause and breathe: Take a moment to stay calm when something goes wrong
  • Reflect and learn: Ask, “What can I learn from this?”
  • Try again: Use what you’ve learned to improve next time
  • Stay positive: Mistakes are signs of effort and growth

These strategies help children become more confident learners who are willing to take risks and embrace challenges.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

The next time you make a mistake, pause, take a breath, and find one thing you can learn from it. Then try again with your new understanding. Notice how each mistake helps you grow stronger.

Perfect for:

  • Primary school-aged children developing resilience and confidence
  • Classrooms exploring PSHE, SEL, or growth mindset
  • Families supporting children through setbacks and challenges
  • Teachers and wellbeing leads promoting positive learning behaviours

Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for another episode in our Building Confidence and Self -Esteem series. Last time we talked about facing challenges with courage. How taking small, brave steps can help us to grow stronger inside. Did you try your Mindful Moment challenge and take a brave step this week? I'm so proud of you for trying.

Today we're going to talk about something that every brave person must learn. How to learn from our mistakes. By the end of this episode, you'll know why mistakes aren't something to fear. They're actually stepping stones to success. Let's get started. Have you ever made a mistake and felt disappointed, frustrated, or maybe even embarrassed?

It's completely normal to feel that way. But here's a secret. Mistakes are how we grow. When you make a mistake, it means that you're trying something new. You're learning what works and what doesn't. And you're getting better every time you try again.

Mistakes aren't the end, they're just a stop along the journey to success. Let's hear a story about someone who learned to see mistakes differently. Finn loved building tall towers with blocks. One afternoon he decided to build the tallest tower he had ever made. He stacked block after block, carefully and slowly, but all of a sudden the tower fell over. First Finn wanted to give up.

He thought, I'll never be able to do it. But then he remembered something his teacher had said. Every fall teaches you something new. Finn looked carefully at the fallen blocks. and he realised he had put the biggest ones on top instead of at the bottom. He tried again, this time building a strong wide base and guess what?

His next tower stood taller than ever. What do you think Finn learned from making a mistake? Just like Finn, you can turn mistakes into learning moments.

Here's how.

Pause and take a deep breath. Give yourself a moment to feel calm. Look carefully and ask yourself, what can I learn from what just happened? And then try again. Use what you learn to make your next try even better. Mistakes are not proof that you can't do it, they are proof that you are learning and growing.

Can you think of a time when you learned something from a mistake? You've done a brilliant job today learning about how mistakes can help us grow. Always remember, mistakes are not something to be ashamed of, they're something to be proud of. Every time you learn from a mistake you become stronger and wiser. You are on a journey of learning and every step, even the wobbly ones, helps you to move forward. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week.

The next time you make a mistake, pause, breathe and find one thing you can learn from it and then smile because you just got stronger. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison we'll talk about setting goals and celebrating wins. how dreaming big and recognising your progress can build your confidence even higher. I can't wait to see you there. Thank you for joining me today. Keep trying, keep learning and as always, keep shining.
