Supporting children to approach new experiences with curiosity, courage, and hope.
In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison, children explore the positive side of change: new beginnings. Starting something new—whether it’s a new school, a new home, or a new activity—can feel exciting, but also a little uncertain.
Through Mateo’s story, children learn that it’s completely normal to feel nervous when facing something unfamiliar. By taking small steps, noticing positive moments, and staying open to new experiences, children can begin to transform worry into curiosity and confidence.
This episode helps children understand that every new beginning is full of possibilities—and that courage grows with each step they take.
What children will learn in this episode:
- What a new beginning is and why it happens
- Why new experiences can feel both exciting and nerve-wracking
- How to manage nervous feelings when starting something new
- How to look for positive opportunities in unfamiliar situations
Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:
- Take a deep breath: Calm your body and mind when you feel nervous
- Look for one good thing: Focus on something positive in the new experience
- Be open to surprises: New situations can bring unexpected joy
- Take the first step: You don’t have to feel ready—just begin
These strategies help children build confidence, resilience, and a positive mindset towards change.
Mindful Moment Challenge:
This week, think about a new beginning in your life—big or small. Draw or write about it using a “star map”:
- One thing that excites you
- One thing that makes you feel unsure
- One thing that might surprise you in a good way
Notice how thinking this way can turn worry into wonder.
Perfect for:
- Primary school-aged children experiencing transitions or new experiences
- Classrooms exploring PSHE, SEL, or emotional wellbeing
- Families supporting children through change and new routines
- Teachers helping pupils build confidence and resilience
Quote of the Week:
“Every new beginning is like an unopened present—full of possibility.”

Hello everyone and welcome back to Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison. I'm Miss Harrison and I'm so happy you're here for another episode in our Coping with Change series. Last time we talked about saying goodbye, how to handle the feelings that come when something ends or we let something go. Did you try your Mindful Moment challenge and take time to remember something special? I hope it helped your heart feel a little bit lighter. Today we're going to look at the other side of change, new beginnings.
By the end of this episode, you'll see how starting something new can be exciting, hopeful and full of possibility. Let's begin. A new beginning is when something starts. It might be moving to a new home, starting a new school or class, meeting a new baby in the family, trying a new club, team or activity, or simply waking up to a brand new day. New beginnings often come after something has changed or ended. They can feel exciting, but also a little scary.
And that's completely okay. Let's hear a story about someone stepping into something new. Mateo had just moved to a new town. Today was his first day at his new school. He had packed his bag, sharpened his pencils, and zipped up his coat. But inside, he felt nervous butterflies.
He whispered to himself, what if I don't know anyone? What if I get lost? As he walked through the school gates, he took a deep breath. In class, the teacher smiled and said, welcome Mateo. A girl named Priya offered to show him where the pencils were. At lunchtime, someone invited him to play a game.
Mateo's nerves didn't disappear straight away, but by the end of the day they had made space for something else. Excitement. He realised that beginnings are like unopened presents. You don't know what's inside, but they might just surprise you in the best way. What do you think Mateo learned about new beginnings? Just like Mateo, you can step into new beginnings with hope and courage.
Here's how. Take a deep breath. It's okay to feel nervous. Breathe in calm. and breathe out bravery. Look for one good thing, a kind face, a fun activity or something new you can learn.
Be open to surprises. Some of the best parts of a new beginning are things we didn't expect. New beginnings can feel like standing at the edge of an adventure but the first step is often the hardest but also the most exciting. Can you think of a new beginning in your life, big or small? Let's imagine you're starting something new. You're looking up at a sky full of stars.
and each star is something that might happen. Draw or picture a new beginning star map and ask yourself, what's one star that makes you feel excited? What's one star that makes you feel unsure or nervous? And what's one star that could surprise you in a good way? Every beginning has a whole sky of possibilities. You get to discover them one by one.
You've done such a wonderful job today learning how to embrace new beginnings. Remember, new beginnings often come with big feelings and that's okay. being curious and open. help turn worry into wonder. You don't have to feel ready to start something new, you just need to take the first step. Here's your mindful moment challenge for the week.
Think about a new beginning in your life, even a small one. Try writing or drawing what makes it exciting and remind yourself every beginning brings a chance to grow. Next time on Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison we'll explore handling changes at home. and how to stay steady when family life feels a little different. I can't wait to see you then. Thank you for joining me today.
Keep stepping forward, keep discovering, and as always, keep shining.
