EP #15 The One-Stop Dental Shop Changing Stafford's Smiles

Dori Stewart Season 1 Episode 15

Ever wonder what drives someone to become a dentist? For Dr. Andrew of Embrey Mill Dental Care, it started with a childhood fear of dental visits that evolved into a genuine passion for improving people's health and confidence through exceptional oral care.

Dr. Andrew takes us behind the scenes of his thriving Stafford practice, where accessibility is a cornerstone of their philosophy. Accepting most insurance plans and offering a comprehensive range of services under one roof—from routine cleanings to advanced Invisalign treatments—Embrey Mill Dental Care has positioned itself as a true one-stop solution for families throughout the area.

The conversation takes a heartwarming turn as Dr. Andrew shares how becoming a father to a four-month-old daughter has transformed both his personal and professional outlook. His stories about gardening with his infant, pointing out flowers she's too young to understand but will hopefully absorb, reveal the gentle, patient approach he likely brings to anxious patients. This new chapter has taught him valuable lessons about presence, efficiency, and letting go of perfectionism—skills that enhance his practice management as well.

Dr. Andrew dispels common dental misconceptions that prevent people from receiving proper care, emphasizing that pain-free teeth don't necessarily mean problem-free teeth, and that modern dentistry has evolved far beyond the uncomfortable experiences many fear. His genuine appreciation for his team shines through, attributing much of Embry Mill's success to the dedicated professionals who create a welcoming environment for every patient.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to another episode of the Fredericksburg Neighbors Podcast. Today we have a fantastic neighbor to introduce you to. Dr Andrew is one of the doctors at Embrey Mill Dental Care. Dr Andrew, one of the doctors at Embrey-Mill Dental Care. Dr Andrew, welcome to the podcast.

Speaker 3:

Hi, Ms Stewart. Thank you so much. Thank you for the opportunity. I'm happy to be here with you.

Speaker 2:

I'm excited to dive in, so let's start off by sharing with the listeners a little bit about Embrey-Mill Dental Care.

Speaker 3:

Great yeah, my name is Dr Andrew. I run this office and remail dental care here in Stafford, virginia. We are proud to serve one of the largest patient base here in the area locally. We accept most, if not all, insurances, just to make dental care more accessible for everyone. We also provide a wide range of services under one roof so patients don't really have to go like shuffle around for other services. We offer everything from cleaning to more advanced treatments like Invisalign or orthodontic treatment without needing to go elsewhere. I would say it's a really one-stop shop for dental care here in Emory Mill Dental Care.

Speaker 2:

Nice. Yeah, that's a lot of services. So tell me, how did you get into this? Tell me a little bit about your background.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, my journey to dentistry started when I was a kid. It might be silly, but I was actually very scared of the dentist growing up. So I told myself, hey, listen, if I become a dentist I don't really have to go to the dentist. But obviously that's not true and it didn't happen. But that childhood idea stuck with me and over time I became genuinely passionate about the field. I realized how much dentistry can impact someone's health and confidence, and now I get to do that every day, so I'm lucky about that.

Speaker 2:

That's awesome. I mean, you're so right If you have, if you have a beautiful smile and you're confident in your smile, it's gonna radiate through your whole body.

Speaker 3:

That is right.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so I imagine you work very hard. I imagine you work long hours, so tell us when you're not working, what are you doing for fun? We need to know when you're not working.

Speaker 3:

What are you doing for fun? We need to know. I mean, I love to stay active, I love to work out, I love to go on my bike. I just bought a new bike a couple of years back and I love it. I'm on a bike ride, I'm trying to do the Virginia Capitol Trail it's kind of like down from Richmond to Williamsburg and I'm trying to do it. So I'm working on that but, honestly, one of my favorite moments lately we just had a baby. It's a four-month-year-old daughter.

Speaker 3:

Thank you so much. Thank you so much. I just like the garden and I like taking her with me outside in the backyard and just tell her about the different flowers that we have. It's just a peaceful way to slow down and connect with her. I don't think she's really listening, but I would like to think she's like smoking it somewhere and it's just a beautiful time that I get to spend with her and this is really what makes me feel much better at the end of the day.

Speaker 2:

That's wonderful. I love that so much. So do you find that there are any myths or misconceptions about your industry?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I would think so. I would think one big misconception is that if your teeth don't hurt, you don't really need to go to the dentist. I think this is wrong. Many dental issues, like dental cavities or gum disease, can develop silently. You cannot really like feel oh, I don't feel anything wrong. So that's not necessarily true. So if nothing hurts, you don't need to go to the dentist. So that's not necessarily true.

Speaker 3:

So if nothing hurts, you don't need to go to the dentist. Another one is that dental visit is always painful. I believe this is a very old misconception that dental visits are like painful and like hard to go through. Dentistry has come a long way. We really do everything here to make your experience as comfortable as possible. So I would say those are the two misconceptions that come to mind.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, I mean I would agree. Most people probably think that going to the dentist is going to be a terrible experience, but it sounds like you put a lot of care into the customer experience to make sure that people are comfortable and at ease. I love that.

Speaker 3:

That is right. Yeah, we try to. Yes.

Speaker 2:

Yes, Awesome, Okay, so do you have? Can you think of maybe a challenge or a struggle or something that you have gone through in life? Or you know in business that you feel like you are better because of it.

Speaker 3:

I think I would say again I'll go back to that the joy of my life, my daughter. We just had our first baby four months ago and then this is our first child, and then balancing life as a new parent together with running a dental practice has been a little challenge. Settle for this human being, for your business, for your team and this baby who just needs you all the time. It's taught me this has taught me to be more present and more efficient with my time and just to let go of the idea that is like I will do everything perfectly. Today, I just I'll let go of that. When she was born, nothing's going to go perfectly, nothing's going to go according to the plan. We just have to be present with each other. I feel it has made me stronger on a personal and a professional level that's, that's amazing, I mean there's no.

Speaker 3:

Kids are brilliant at teaching us that nothing goes as planned right, I've learned a lot of things since we had the baby. I haven't really had experience with babies before, but it's the joy of our lives and we're very blessed to have her.

Speaker 2:

That's awesome. Congratulations. So much fun. I love it. So what is something that you would like the listeners to know about your business?

Speaker 3:

your business. I wish people knew how incredible my team is here the dental assistants, the dental hygienists, obviously, the office managers, Amy, who kind of runs the day-to-day operation. I just wanted to know that behind every smooth visit you get here in this office is a group of dedicated people outside who truly care about you. They are compassionate, hardworking and they truly go above and beyond to make sure every patient feels comfortable and cared for. I couldn't do anything without them and I'm proud of the positive, supportive environment that we created together.

Speaker 2:

That's amazing. Every single person makes a difference in a business when it comes to the customer experience, so I love that you recognize that. That's awesome.

Speaker 3:

Thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2:

Now there are.

Speaker 3:

There are like beautiful groups of people I'm trying to connect to each one of them individually and have a relationship with and I truly care for them and I believe they care about us and the business and they care, obviously, about the patients who come to our practice.
