EP #124 Inside Battlefield Ink: Redefining The Tattoo Experience For Professionals
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Tattoos should feel as good as they look. That’s the belief powering Battlefield Ink, a Fredericksburg studio where hospitality, precision, and professionalism turn body art into a luxury you actually experience. We sit down with owner and lead artist Gary McCord to unpack what “luxury tattooing” means without the fluff—fair pricing, zero gimmicks, and a studio culture designed to lower stress, raise standards, and protect long-term results.
Gary’s path runs from the United States Marine Corps to an MBA to a transformative apprenticeship at a high-end studio serving elite clients. That journey forged a leadership style built on discipline and care: inspect what you expect, lead from the front, and make the process as thoughtful as the art. He explains how that philosophy shapes everything at Battlefield Ink, from spotless setups and clear communication to a code of conduct that empowers artists to do their best work. The result is a team that can handle complex cover-ups, fine-line precision, and large-scale pieces with consistency and respect.
We also dig into permanent makeup services—brows, eyeliner, lips, and scalp micropigmentation—delivered by a licensed specialist who brings the same calm, detailed approach. Gary shares how the shop grew from early hiring doubts to a strong roster of artists, why the studio avoids discounts in favor of steady, fair rates, and how creating a serene space helps clients make better choices and heal better. If you’re planning a sleeve, a back piece, or a confidence-boosting PMU treatment, you’ll hear exactly what to look for in portfolios, consultations, and shop culture.

Welcome & Guest Intro
Speaker 1This is the Fredericksburg Neighbors Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Dori Stewart.
SpeakerWelcome back to another episode of the FXBG Neighbors Podcast, where we share the stories of our favorite local brands. I've got Gary McCord joining me today. He is with Battlefield Ink Gary, welcome to the podcast.
Speaker 2Hey Dori, thanks for having me.
Defining A Luxury Tattoo Studio
SpeakerI'm excited for this, and I'm excited to learn more about your business. So let's start there. Share with us what is Battlefield Ink
Speaker 2Well, so I think the best answer to that question, I think we just start with our mission statement. So obviously, we're a luxury tattoo studio. Um, unlike anything that you've really seen in Fredericksburg, that's not a that's not a knock to anybody else or how they do business. We're just a little bit different here in regards to experience and especially our luxury environment. Um, but our mission is to deliver exceptional and luxurious tattoo experience tailored to a professional clientele. Um, we blend artistic excellence with unwavering professionalism, prioritizing comfort, care, and a client-first approach in each and every session. Our commitment is to create meaningful high-end art in a space where clients feel respected, understood, and inspired.
SpeakerVery cool. I really love your concept, and I love how you are positioning yourself in the market and differentiating yourself from other traditional tattoo studios. So let's dive a little bit deeper into that. Explain to me what you mean by a luxury tattoo experience.
Tattoos As Luxury Items
Speaker 2Well, I'm glad you asked because um that's a question we've been getting a lot, especially on social media and things of that nature. First, if you really want to experience, you have to come see it. Um, whether you're getting a tattoo, whether you just want to come by, get a cup of coffee, have some water, soda, whatever the case, that's on us. Um, we provide that for each and everybody that walks in here. Um, but what I would say is there's a misconception out there that tattoos aren't a luxury item. Um, and that's not the case. I mean, if you really think about it, you know, if we go get a Versace watch, if we go get a Rolex, um if we get a Louis Vuitton bag, you know, things like that, those are all luxury items. I mean, we can get any bag, we we truly can, but we want one of quality, and then we want the experience when we go there. Um, so I think that is kind of what sets us apart in regards to the quality experience. Now, that doesn't mean that our price points are so high that that the average individual couldn't afford them or whatever the case may be. We like to charge a fair rate all year round, although we don't do discounts or gimmicks. Um, but I do believe that getting a tattoo is a luxury item. And I believe that if you're gonna get a luxury item on your body, something that you're gonna show off, show that jewelry off forever, then it needs to be of quality, and you should get a luxury experience in a luxury environment. So that's really what makes us different. It's not to knock how anybody's been doing it for however long. There's a lot of great studios here in Fredericksburg. We're just trying to take it up just a notch in regards to the experience, the professional service, and the luxury environments.
SpeakerI really love that you explained that. And I'd love to dive deeper into your background. I'd love to learn, you know, your story and then how you came to making that decision that this is the the type of business that you wanted to open up.
Gary’s Path: Marines To MBA
Apprenticeship In A Luxury Lab
Speaker 2Yeah, well, I'm I'm glad you asked. So I do have a little bit of a different story uh regarding other artists or entrepreneurs in our industry. So, first off, I am a tattoo artist, first and foremost. Um, nothing against anybody that owns a shop that isn't an artist. Um, there's a lot of work. You got to work on your shop and in your shop. So I do understand both avenues of that approach. Um, but a little bit about me. Um, I my first job in career was United States Marine Corps. I joined at 17 years old, um, born and raised in Northwest Georgia. So that's what kind of moved me all around the country. Um, I am I did multiple combat deployments, um, I am a combat event of Afghanistan, um, which really molded me in regards to discipline um mentally, physically, and spiritually to the man I am today. So I'm extremely blessed that I got an opportunity to serve our great nation, especially in the United States Marines. So it's something that I I, you know, you you can't put a price on that experience. Um, from there, I got out of the Marine Corps and um during the Marine Corps, I was going to school when I wasn't deployed, things of that nature. Um, so I have been in college for eight years of my life. I got my master's in business administration because I always knew that I wanted to own a business. I wasn't, I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Um, I I enjoy I enjoy the hustle. I enjoy the journey. Um, you know, some people climb Mount Everest just so they can take the picture at the top, but other people just do it for the journey, and that's really what I'm in this for. Um, so I got my master's in business. I worked for one of the nation's leading nonprofits, Wounded Warrior Project. Shout out to them, they do great things, even to this day. Um, so I got to help veterans and I got to give back to the veteran community. Um, I did that for about five years. And uh one day I told I told my beautiful wife, um, um we were a single-income family at the time, and and my kids, I said, Dad's gonna go be a tattoo artist. My wife said, Well, maybe we should think about this, you know, with the loss of income. And I said, It's too late. This is what I go, I'm gonna do. Both feet are in. Um, I drove four hours one way. I lived on the floor of a room that I rented that wasn't in very good shape. I'll just say that it was different, you know. Much respect to the people that that gave me that opportunity. It was a free opportunity. I just had to tattoo the owner of the home. So I slept on a mattress of a floor. Um, and I do have pictures of that, and I look at it from time to time. Um, and I was up in Wilmington, Delaware, um, you know, four to five days a week, maybe even more, working 12 to 15 hour days. So I was away from my wife, I was away from my kids. Um, and that was my uh apprenticeship for almost two years. Um, the good part about that is I apprenticed in a luxury tattoo studio. That is where the idea was born. I saw what they did, I didn't make this up. It's called the lab in Wilmington, Delaware. Check them out. Um, the owner has tattooed Justin Bieber. Megan Fox has been tattooed by an artist out there. Shout out to them. They're absolutely incredible, the work they did. Um, the man that taught me how to tattoo only tattooed NFL and NBA athletes. Um so they really provided a luxury service. The quality of the tattooing was just incredible. Um, something I've never seen, you know, to this day. And I strive to emulate that each and every day, not only in entrepreneurship, but also in my artistry. Um, so being able to teach that to the artists down here, um, it's just an incredible opportunity to do this. And uh I really strive and I work to to provide an incredible opportunity, not only for the clients that come in here, um, but for the artists that work here as well.
SpeakerThat's amazing. Thank you for sharing that context with us. Uh, I love hearing the origin story, and that's really that's really interesting. And I imagine, you know, once you open up and you want to set the bar and and you've created this experience, I imagine it's um maybe sometimes difficult to find a team to, you know, kind of carry on your vision as well. So talk to me about that. Um, you know, now that you have opened and you've got a team together, what was that like building that team?
Building Standards And Culture
Hiring Challenges To Strong Team
Speaker 2Well, at first, you know, um it was super, man, you take your life's a risk, you know, and especially as an entrepreneur. So, you know, I sunk my life savings, um, not only in this shop, but a luxury hair studio that my wife is opening up. So we just signed a lease next week. I'm sure we'll talk more of that later. Um and at first, you know, I was nervous. I was like, man, is this is this just gonna be me? Um, and so we started, you know, the build out was underway. I started trying to hire. I didn't get much interest. And I was like, man, if they could just see what I'm building here, if they could just experience, if they could just understand that as artists that work here, we're gonna be a team, we're gonna be a family, and I'm gonna provide more to you as a shop owner than anybody in the area. That's my goal, not only to pay you better, um, but to provide more supplies. But I wasn't getting any bites. I it just wasn't happening. I was in here by myself, and I just wasn't being patient because within a month of us opening, the word got out. I had over 15 applicants. And I don't know if you know anything about the tattoo industry, but tattoo artists tend to come and go as they please, retention can be a big thing. Um, and not everybody has that drive to want to succeed because we do set a standard here for each and every one of our artists. There's a code of conduct that they have to follow each and every day. Um, you have to be a professional, you have to act like a professional, things of that nature, which in this industry for some can be really challenging. Um and I was I was nervous about that. Like they have rules, you know what I mean? Right, and uh within the first month of opening, we had 15 plus applicants. Um, I did interview after interview after interview. I had to make some really hard decisions because everyone that reached out was extremely qualified, extremely, extremely qualified. Um, so we did put a team together, we had to put a new station in, we had to move some things around um because we got more than we could even we had the capacity for at the time. So it's it's it's been a very humbling experience, you know. Uh I've got artists in here that are just at five years, they're they're just incredible in the industry. And then I've got artists in here that are pushing 20 years and they're able to teach me some of those old school ways and some of those things. I'm gonna they can literally from cover-ups on the neck, you know, whatever the case, the tattoo that walks in. I know that that the artists that I have here and the team that we've put together here is gonna provide a quality experience in a luxury environment and give you something that you're gonna want to show off for the rest of your life.
Leadership Principles In The Studio
SpeakerI love that. And it and it's truly a testament to your leadership that you have found such great quality people who meet your standards, one, but also are following your leadership and are um excited and motivated to carry out your vision.
Speaker 2I I absolutely agree. You know, um once again, I I was blessed to be given the opportunity to lead Marines in combat. Um so coming here and being able to lead a team and being a part of that team. Um, I and I think the most important part of that in regards to leadership and in life is to lead from the front, lead by example. Um you know, inspect what you expect, and they're not gonna do what you say, they're gonna do what you do. And that's in parenthood and and leading a team, whatever the case may be. So I'm I'm extremely blessed that I have some respect, respectful, some professional uh men and women who want to come to work every single day, who love this career and put their best foot forward each and every time they walk in the door.
SpeakerThat's amazing. What is something that you wish the listeners knew about Battlefield Ink
Fair Pricing Without Gimmicks
Where To Find Battlefield Inc
Speaker 2Yeah, that's that's a great question. And the one thing that you know that I first off, you've got to come in to see it for yourself. So don't just take my word for it. We're open seven days a week, 10 to 6. I'm in here earlier, I'm in here later. You can always come in, like I said, we'll get you a cup of coffee. But the main thing, the the first thing that I want to touch on that I wish the listeners knew is we do provide permanent makeup. So, and that's not that's not from a tattoo artist, okay? This isn't the 1930s where a tattoo artist has a coral machine uh blasting eyebrows on you. That's not how this works here. Um, we have a license of five plus years in the in the permanent makeup industry. Um, Haley's on her team, she's been here since the beginning. She's been my A1 from day one, and she does provide permanent makeup services. Um, her specialty is brows, but she's reaching out to eyeliner, to lips, even to SP. So, like hair, tattooing hair, you know, for guys that are are losing it. Um, there is, you know, alternatives from there, it's things of that nature. Um, so that would be the first thing. And the second thing um that I would really love for our listeners to know is we are confident in what we do here, um, but we we are not hubris about it. Um, we understand that each and every tattoo shop in the area, they do their own thing, they put out some great work, and we are not revolutionizing the the art of tattooing here. But what we are revolutionizing is the experience you get when you walk in the door and the luxury environment that we're gonna put you in. That's what we're revolutionizing. So that's what I would want each and every listener to hear. I want you to feel welcome here at any time. Our prices aren't astronomical, we can work with budgets. Um, now we've all got to make a living just like everybody else. And inflation is high and things of that nature. The economy is not doing so well. Um, so we do have to charge fair prices. But although we don't do gimmicks, we don't do discounts, we do charge fair prices year-round. And especially if you want to get that large-scale work, like a chest piece, a back piece, uh an arm sleeve, a leg sleeve, I'm telling you, this is the place to get it done.
SpeakerAmazing. So if the listeners want to check you out, if they want to work with you, where can they find you?
Closing Thanks & Local Shoutouts
Speaker 2You can find us just about on every social media platform. Um, I feel like Instagram is one of the more professional areas, um, basically based off talking to our consumers and things of that nature. So each and every artist who include our shop has an Instagram page, um, Battlefield Ink. Um, they're all listed on there. You'll see us. We share stories every single day about our openings, when we're available, and we constantly post our work, whether it be in a story, in a fashion of a reel, in a fashion of a post. All right. We want you to know that we are tattooing every day. We want you to know that we are trusted in the community and we're not gonna let you down. So you can find us on Instagram. That's what we're on mostly, and that's where you'll find our artist portfolio. However, we have journeyed into TikTok a little bit. So you'll find uh our artist on TikTok. Um, I think we just hit a we just put a reel out on TikTok, which is really one of my first ever reels of just the shop, and you know, almost 50,000 views, 2,500 plus likes. We've really gotten a lot, a lot from the local community, a lot of love. Um, and we've gotten a little bit of hate and discontent too. That's okay because everybody's welcome here, whether you choose to say negative things on social media or not. Um, I'm here to change your mind so you can come in at any time. Other than that, battlefieldink.com. We do have a website. You can find us on Google. Um, we're constantly running ads on Google and things of that nature. So, I mean, really, Apple Maps, Google Maps, whatever the case may be, you type in Battlefield Ink. our shops in Fredericksburg, um, and we're here for you.
SpeakerAmazing, amazing. Well, Gary, congratulations on your success. I just love what you're doing, and thank you so much for joining me on the podcast today.
Speaker 2I I truly appreciate it. I true, I truly appreciate everything you do because you're really an advocate for the local community and the small business owners. And, you know, Lord knows we need that. So, what you're doing is incredible. I I wish you nothing but the best, and I can't wait to work with you in the future, as well as with Zeba Hair Lounge, which is my wife. She's gonna be opening off um Calvin Boulevard, so go check her out. Big things coming soon on that, okay?
SpeakerAwesome. Thank you so much.
