Summary

Feeling heavy, foggy or congested this spring?

In this episode, I explore why this happens from an Ayurvedic perspective — and how simple, practical shifts can help clear congestion and bring your energy back into flow.

We look at the role of Kapha, why mucus builds up at this time of year, and how food, warmth, movement, and daily rhythm can support the body in clearing what it no longer needs.

You don’t need to change everything — just a few small, consistent adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

Hello and welcome back to Rooted in the Seasons where ancient wisdom meets modern life with a strong cup of tea and practical tools for real busy women. I'm Katja Patel, Ayurveda read, eat, diet and lifestyle, educator, yoga teacher and teacher-mentor. I help women find more

calm and clarity through small daily rituals seasonal rhythm and timeless wisdom that fits into real life.

Today I want to talk about something many people experience in spring.

because instead of feeling light and energised.

The opposite is the case. Many of my students describe it like this. A heavy or blocked feeling in the chest, in the sinuses, congestion or lingering colds. Needing to clear the throat more often. Like this. Often a foggy head.

slower thinking, low energy, even after rest.

Does this apply to you as well? You certainly are not alone. So I want to walk you through five simple ways to clear that congestion and bring your energy back into flow. But before we get to that, let's look at why this is happening in the first place.

This is where things start to make sense. From an Ayurvedic perspective, all of these symptoms point to the same underlying pattern.

Spring is dominated by Kapha dosha with qualities like heavy, cold, slow and sticky. Congestion is simply excess mucus.

And mucus carries exactly those same qualities. Here's something essential to understand.

Ayurveda balances with opposite qualities.

So when heaviness, cold and stagnation build up

We introduce light, warm, dry and mobile qualities. And everything we're about to go through connects back to this.

So the first tip is regarding food because food is always the first place to start in Ayurveda. It's something we engage with every day multiple times and it has the most immediate effect on how we feel. In spring the focus shifts to food that is light

warm and slightly drying. To balance, Kapha

We favour bitter, pungent and astringent tastes as they help reduce heaviness and clear mucus. This might look like light vegetable soups with spring greens like kale, asparagus, spinach or nettles if you are adventurous. Adding spices like

ginger, black pepper or turmeric.

including chickpeas or lentil for protein, choosing grains like barley instead of the heavier options like rice or potatoes which are not a grain but they are heavy. Warm cooked meals are key even as the weather becomes milder.

It's easy to reach for something quick or cold. A sandwich from the fridge section, a salad, something that feels healthy and is convenient. But this is often exactly when congestion builds. Cold food increases the very qualities

we are trying to reduce.

In the show notes you find a link to a list with suitable spring foods. the second tip is warmth. Because congestion is linked to cold and heaviness, warmth becomes one of the most effective tools. Cold drinks increase mucus. Hot water

helps clear it. So staying with hot water, ginger tea, ginger lemon tea or thyme tea throughout the day can make a noticeable difference. And this is one of the easiest places to start.

The second tip is digestion support. When digestion slows, congestion tends to build.

Supporting digestion helps the body clear what it no longer needs. Triphala is one of the simplest options within the Ayurvedic herbs. Traditionally it is used to balance digestion and elimination and to digest toxins.

Another powerful herb is neem. It's very good in the spring because it is bitter and it has strong drying qualities but because of this it is best also to use only in short term for example during a spring cleanse for a couple of weeks rather than continuously especially if

you already tend towards dryness in your body.

You don't need to take both. One simple support is enough.

So the fourth tip is...

remember we had the food, had the warmth and we had herbs to help the digestion. now the next tip, fourth tip is movement. Did you know that movement is one of the most effective ways to reduce Kapha? And here's the important part, gentle stretching isn't enough. You need warmth.

you need movement, something that builds heat and ideally brings you to a light sweat. This could be a few rounds of Surya Namaskar in the morning and if you practice them already maybe a little faster pace, a brisk walk, short dynamic practice, even a few minutes make a difference.

and if you are familiar with yogic breathing techniques Kapalabhati is an excellent support here.

and tip number five is rhythm. A simple day might look like this. Wake a little earlier ideally before 6am when the day feels lighter and clear.

Start with a glass of hot water to help flush the system followed by a warming tea like ginger lemon tea. If time's allowed a few minutes of dry brushing before shower that's great. Followed by movement what we just talked about earlier.

even a few rounds of Surya Namaskar or a brisk walk.

Breakfast can be light but still warm. example, a small bowl of porridge or amaranth porridge is excellent.

In the show notes you find a link that gives you some ideas of what you can use as breakfast. And if you're not hungry that's what's okay. It then waits.

Try to leave space between meals rather than snacking so your digestion has time to work properly. Lunch becomes the main meal of the day, warm, nourishing and eaten with attention.

Continue drinking hot water or herbal teas throughout the day. And in the evening, finish what the day has opened, both in your tasks and in your space. Even clearing a small area in your home can support that same sense

of lightness.

Let's take a little breather here. We looked at five different ways to help with congestion.

If this feels a bit much and you want to keep it simple, start here. Switch to hot drinks. Avoid cold food until the congestion has cleared or even into early summer. Add warming spices to your meals like ginger, black pepper and turmeric.

Move your body until you break a light sweat. Keep meals light and warm. One small step is enough.

let me ask you do you recognize this? You rest and still feel heavy, foggy or blocked. That's where rhythm often becomes the missing link and this is something I explore more deeply in my live workshop when rest isn't enough where we put

this into practice there and then in a way that fits into your life.

So let's pause here for a moment and bring this back to the Ascensions. Remember, Spring Congestion has a clear cause.

heaviness, cold and stagnation build up during this season.

and show up as mucus, low energy and then feeling of being stuck in your body or your mind. So the response is just as clear. Add warmth, reduce heaviness, create movement, small steady changes, shift this.

Before we finish, I want to leave you with this.

You don't need to do everything. I say that every time because it's so important. Just notice what feels heavy and introduce a little more lightness.
