Today I want to talk about something very simple which is your breath and how it can help you.

feel a bit clearer and lighter especially at this time of the year which is springtime.

you might recognize some of this as we go. And if you're listening to this in spring you're right in the heart of a season that can feel just a little slower a little less clear not in a dramatic way but enough to notice.

You might find it takes a bit longer to get going in the morning or that your body feels slightly stiffer, not quite as light or responsive as usual.

And here's where things start to connect. If you have been following along with my recent blog posts or podcast episodes,

you know ⁓ that we've already explored how food and yoga practice can support this but here's something interesting something

Something what makes the biggest difference isn't another change in what you eat. It's something much more immediate, your breath. The way you breathe has direct effect on your energy, your focus and ⁓ how settled or unsettled your system feels.

It's not about doing more, it's about using something that's already there ⁓ in a slightly more intentional way.

I see this again and again. Small shifts in breathing can change how someone feels within minutes. So in this episode, I want to share three simple breathing practices.

you can return to throughout the day to feel a bit clearer, bit lighter and more like yourself again.

Let's start with the simplest one deep belly breathing this is something everyone can do anytime and anywhere.

If you're not used to deep belly breathing, it's easiest to feel when you're lying down. So if this isn't the moment to try it, you might come back to it later.

maybe this evening when you're in bed. There you can lie on your back with your knees bent.

Place your hands around your navel.

and just notice does the breath reach there.

Then start directing the breath down to your hands. Feel the slight rise with the in-breath and how your belly relaxes back towards your spine with the out-breath.

when you're upright

or moving around, it can be harder to feel. The body is doing other things, muscles are more engaged, but in that quieter position, the breath becomes much more noticeable.

However, what you can notice right now, wherever you are, is the rhythm of your breath.

Notice the small pause after the in-breath and again after the out-breath. Even becoming aware of that will begin to shift how you feel.

And what's interesting is that this kind of breathing signals to your body that it's safe to settle.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is your rest and digest state.

which affects not just stress but also digestion, energy and even those small habits like snacking.

this isn't something you need to perfect.

even a few slower breaths can begin to shift things. So let's practice one more time together. Inhale, notice the pause, exhale.

Notice how you feel now.

The second practice is a bit more energising, Kapalabhati translated as skull shining.

You might notice this one more clearly in how it feels. It's an active exhale, short and sharp, with an inhale happening automatically. And this is where things get interesting,

because we're used to controlling the breath especially the inhale so letting that happen naturally can feel unfamiliar at first but over time the body finds its rhythm and its trust as well and what this creates is a sense of lightness and clarity especially if you're feeling a bit

sluggish or stuck.

this is something Ayurveda has observed for a long time that certain practices can help counter that heavier

slower quality we can feel in spring. Now this one is best learned with guidance so if you're curious about it I really recommend following along with a short tutorial I'll link one in the show notes.

But this is definitely one to approach gradually and with support.

We practice this every spring and every winter in class to help with coughs and colds and congestion.

The third one is one that we are also exploring in class recently, Ujjayi breathing.

you might know it as the ocean breath or the victorious breath. The ocean breath because of that soft steady sound in the throat.

This is a really useful one for everyday life especially in moments where things feel a bit rushed or scattered or mentally busy. The breath gives you something to come back to.

It steadies the system without forcing anything. If you like to try this, a simple way to begin is with the mouth open. Try exhaling as if you were fogging a mirror.

and notice the soft HA sound forming in the throat.

And once this feels familiar, can close your mouth and keep that same shape and sensation in your throat while letting the breath move quietly through the nose.

Again, doesn't need to be perfect, just enough to notice the effect.

So let's bring this back to the essentials. You don't need to do all of this.

You might choose one deep belly breathing to settle or Kapalabhati to clear the head and strengthen digestion or Ujjayi to stay steady throughout the day.

This never is about adding more. It's always about small moments repeated often enough

that the body begins to recognize them. Consistency matters more than intensity.

The breath is one part of that. But the real change comes from how everything fits together.

and this is what it's all about. You don't need to change everything. One small step is enough. Maybe today it's just noticing your breath.

and letting it guide you back even for a moment.
