Minisode #1 - 10k Race Review
Hi and welcome to the Health Hunts Minnesota.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we might do a few more of these. Maybe we'll give you two a week, one on a Monday, one on a Friday. That's a good idea, or maybe one on a Wednesday, one on a Friday. Keep the people waiting.
Speaker 1:Yeah, god, we do need to quit a day at work.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we do. We'll work on that.
Speaker 1:This is going to be a quick episode.
Speaker 2:A little recap of our big race this weekend just gone. I'm going to start this off Amber. Okay, what the actual fuck was that?
Speaker 1:Well, let's start off by saying it was part of the Holcomb Outlaw weekend Outlaw triathlon weekend. It was the Holcomb 10K. Yeah, what the fuck, what the fuck.
Speaker 2:A few things Middle of the day. What the fuck? Um a few things middle of the day. The race started, so it was boiling hot, yeah.
Speaker 1:Second thing the first three kilometres was up a gravel hill well, unless, before we get to that, the race was delayed because there was an angry wasp's nest on the route, on the route.
Speaker 2:So they had to divert us a little bit, didn't they? Yes, yeah, so we had to wait around for that, yeah, and then the first bit was just uphill on a gravel track which wasn't stated anywhere.
Speaker 1:It said it was a reasonably flat route with one hill at the beginning. The whole route was a hill Up down, up down, up down.
Speaker 2:There was barely any down. It was mainly just up, yeah, and also it was in the middle like all open, so there was no reprieve from there's no shade. It was just either blazing hot sun or like crosswinds yeah, that, or, if you were lucky, both. Yeah, really, my hat blew off. Yeah, you said my hat blew off. I normally do a 10k in about an hour. Took me one hour. 15, that's a lot of extra time.
Speaker 1:I normally do a 10k in one hour 20. It took me one hour 29 did it yeah, I didn't.
Speaker 2:I didn't know that. I um, to be fair, the event itself, I thought was really well organized like it was really nice vibes, like not anything to do with the event organization itself, it was just the course, but I think they should have been a bit more transparent. With actually so 100 metres of elevation, yeah, and I normally do five around Norwich.
Speaker 1:Sometimes I have done 50, but that is double it Still, yeah, 100 metres of elevation.
Speaker 2:Well, maybe it would have been different if it wasn't so hot, maybe it would have been more manageable, more bearable.
Speaker 1:If we'd have had.
Speaker 2:I three or go some things you would change um leading up to the next race.
Speaker 1:So some things I would have changed. I would have walked away at the start went the ventus um I, I don't know if any. I don't think there was anything I could have done other than things that were kind of out of my hands. Like I would have done more hill training, yeah. I would have worn trail shoes.
Speaker 2:Yeah that's it. Yeah, I'm the same. I think I would have fueled better. I didn't feel enough. I was like whatever, I think, because I I've done them and it's not a big deal, but I feel like I could have done more, had a little bit more to eat beforehand and I should have had a gel yeah you had three in your pocket. I was like what the fuck do you need three gels? And then who was stopping at the refresh stations? Me.
Speaker 1:So me and Sarah Gamble had three gels each, and then we had one of the ones from the refill stations. Um, top tip from us because we had our little squeezy bottles of water. Uh, we when we would get into the refill stations when they from us because we had our little squeezy bottles of water. Uh, we when we would get into the refill stations. When they gave us the water, we just poured it over our heads and it cooled us down.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, I, I only stopped once for a water. No, I only stopped once. I got a water and a gel and I just fucking powered on through.
Speaker 1:Oh, I mean, we walked loads.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I. And I ached the next day like I'd never ran a 10k ever.
Speaker 1:I was all right the next day, surprisingly, but I did walk a lot of it, so see I committed up those first three kilometers and I was like I'm not stopping first three.
Speaker 2:The guy that won it 35 minutes freak.
Speaker 1:We passed him. We weren't even at three kilometers and he was almost done yeah, good for you.
Speaker 2:But also like boring, get life. How boring to be so good at something I mean I am a bit jealous.
Speaker 1:I'm a bit jealous, but you know what?
Speaker 2:I kind of liked that. I struggled because I think I'd been like kind of cruising with running for a while, yeah you know, but it made me really want to train seriously for our next 10k race. Yeah, like I'm gonna take it quite seriously yeah, I want to train seriously for our next 10K race. Yeah, I'm going to take it quite seriously. Yeah, I want to be under an hour. I want to be 59 minutes. That's my goal.
Speaker 1:I'd like to be an hour and 15. Yeah, because that's five minutes long, they're all relative to what we're doing now.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but I was like actually I really enjoy the training part of it and getting getting better the progress side of things yeah, I feel like I've taken a real turn for the worse recently.
Speaker 1:You're having problems with your lungs, I am having problems don't worry, she's fine, but like I'm just struggling to breathe when I run.
Speaker 1:Somebody has said it could potentially be low iron. So I did have an iron testing kit at home and it did say I had low iron. So I'm taking iron, which I do actually sometimes suffer with, and I've also realized I keep getting dizzy, quite a lot like when I stand up I get a head rush and like I quite often feel dizzy and that is also a symptom of low iron yeah, so maybe that is it, and it wouldn't surprise me, because you are vegan yeah, like you know a lot of iron comes from meat, yeah, so maybe you need some more greens in your life as well.
Speaker 2:Yeah, maybe Should have had some of that broccoli last night. It was delicious, yeah, but it had ricotta on it. Yeah, but I would have wiped it off. Should have had a lemon and lime pousse. I had a lemon and lime pousse yesterday. It was absolutely delicious. A bit runny, but it was nice. Were there any highlights from your?
Speaker 1:run.
Speaker 2:Having a picture with Sarah Gamble.
Speaker 1:Sarah um having a picture of sarah gamble.
Speaker 2:Sarah gamble was a highlight so mine and sarah gamble's highlight was a woman called mandy.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, this is a really nice story, so we saw mandy at around about two to three k and it was just as we were going up that hill and the guy taking the photos was there, mandy, like started running up the hill and we were like, oh my god, look at her, go, yeah, um, because she was actually the only person running. And then when we got to about eight and a half nine k, like uh, we were all walking and like we caught up with her and she was like chatting to us and she gave us a, I mean like running crack, some like little tablet that looked like you know those squashy sweets, but it was like a refresher.
Speaker 1:I think they're like dextrose tablets.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:So she gave us one of those. She's like that'll sort you out.
Speaker 2:So you were just like let's take a sweet from this stranger.
Speaker 1:Yes, fair enough, and it was great the our last 1k perfect we were so quick, it was downhill.
Speaker 2:It was not. Not to take away from your one-pick, yeah, but like it was that tap.
Speaker 1:It was running crack that Mandy gave us she also. We were talking to her about doing a triathlon, the plug, and she was like, do she's like? Oh, do Beckles triathlon because you swim in the Lido, you don't have to swim in a pond.
Speaker 2:Well, there we go, she. You don't have to swim in a pond. Well, there we go. She was a hero, but you still wanted to train for your triathlon after Sunday, saturday, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, because it's like a swim, a bike, a 5K run, yeah 5Ks I just want to nail my 5Ks.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's your focus. Maybe you need to just like really nail that, and then you might get the joy of running again. Yeah, then you might get the joy running again, yeah maybe also it's too hot it is too hot. It is too it's too hot to walk. Yeah, you got heat stroke from sitting in your nail room.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I did twice the shark didn't save it, we're telling you. So, yeah, that was our post 10k review. It was rank. We learned some valuable lessons better fueling, yeah. Better trainers. Take drugs off strangers get always. Only. They're called mandy, though. Yeah, and, oh my god, her name was mandy. Are you sure it wasn't anything? Yes, it was a dextrose tablet.
Speaker 1:Okay, but yeah, so fuel better. Try and find out what the course is really like.
Speaker 2:Yeah, Talk to me about it.
Speaker 1:I have run the Run Norwich course almost. I've done 8K of it.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:I've managed to get Sarah Gamble a place now Fantastic, so I'll have someone to run with.
Speaker 2:So yeah, I guess our next debrief will be 10k after run norwich, I think I'm gonna do the blickling half marathon so is sarah gamble but that's not that far away at all it's october so maybe I won't, maybe I'll do a half marathon 2026 uh well, what about the norwich half at the showground? That's november, end of november yeah, I feel like I'd want to give myself a good three months of training, so maybe July, august, september, october, november, yeah okay, well, maybe I'll do it next year, okay.
Speaker 1:Marriott Sway half marathon. When is that?
Speaker 2:February. Maybe I'll aim for that then. Okay, that'll give me enough time. Yeah, and running in the cold is probably better than running, and blazing on sunshine yeah, probably better than running and blazing on sunshine. Yeah, anyway, thanks for listening. Peace and love. Bye, if you hold on a minute, jesus, if you like this and want more mini sodes, give us some topics to talk about. Yeah, maybe we could start a patreon. Oh, my god, we could watch this space. We'll be charging you some money soon, okay, bye.
