Introduction to GLP-1s

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Inside the Mill. We talk real fitness, real results, and the stories to prove it. Welcome back to another episode, Inside the Mill Podcast. Coach Christian here. My main man Seth. Today's podcast episodes we're talking about the truth about GLP ones that nobody is talking about. And man, I'm surprised that we're 30 episodes in, and this is the first time that we've talked about GLP ones, and it's been becoming extremely popular lately. It seems like everybody's taken some form of it. And uh yeah, just a lot of the population is on it. And so that's kind of what we want to do is we want to talk about, yes, some of the pros, but also there's there's some cons that come with this that are leaving a lot of people getting results early on, and then they're frustrated long term because they don't know how to keep the weight off. And so I think that's the big thing that I want to talk about is it what it does that a lot of people think once I get on this drug, the drug is what's making me lose the weight. The drug isn't the magic pill that's making you lose the weight, it's what it's doing to your appetite. And so for anybody that cuts their calories to an extreme level is going to drop body fat. And that's what it does, it just reduces your calories. This is why you see people that are eating pizza, they're eating all of these tasty things that are very high in calories, but they're still dropping body fat because they used to maybe smash five pieces of pizza and now they eat about one and they're like, I'm full. So this is a lot of our clients that have even been on the GLP one, we want to show them that, hey, the quality of the food matters, especially since you're eating a lot less. We've got to be a lot more intentional about what we're eating now because we don't have as much food and as much calories to play around with. So protein becomes a lot more important. There's just other things that uh that become important. But that's one thing I want to make clear to start this off is it's not the GLP one that is making you drop all this weight. It's what it's doing to your appetite. It's making your calories go so low that you're losing weight drastically. And with that starts to come the muscle loss. With that starts to come the energy loss. And uh, yeah, I mean, I'll let you kind of take it from there and then we can bounce off each other.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't think that I think that anything uh I mean, I've done the research and there's uh there's some positives to it, and with anything, there's there's positives to it and there's negatives to it. So there's individuals that that need this, that have diabetes, different problems and things that they need to have a GOP one. And and there's individuals that uh that can take it in a uh in a way that to help them just a little bit to get over uh get over the hump that they need to get into. I think the biggest, uh it's not it's the biggest problem, is getting on a GOP and then not tweaking and and changing behaviors and patterns. Yeah. Because you're not gonna be on it the rest of your life. Some people may want to, like, think they like there's some people that are 100%, they're like, hey, this is what I'm gonna do. And and in small doses, there are some uh great benefits to it that you can still have an appetite, still be able to get all the benefits of it, but not uh not necessarily have all the the high dosages where you just can't eat. I've seen people that they just they just can't eat, and so then they're dropping all this weight, but they're also dropping tons of muscle too. That's and there's research now that shows that like, yeah, you're dropping, you might drop 20, 30 pounds, but you're also almost 40% of it.

SPEAKER_00

The studies say almost 40% of the weight loss is lean muscle mass. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

That's when I I knew the 40 and I couldn't, I didn't know where it was at, but 100%, that's what I'd seen too.

SPEAKER_00

Well, like you, like you said too, some people want to be on it forever. That's fine. Some people are looking as at it as, hey, I just need a boost to help me. Regardless if you're gonna be on it short term or long term, you still need a plan to do it the right way. It doesn't matter. You still need a plan. And so, yeah, for anybody that's out there that's going, hey, I'm just using this as a boost, totally fine. But then also people are going, hey, I'm committed to this long term. If you're committed to it long term, we've got to prioritize protein. We've got to prioritize them. The same goes for the people they're gonna be on short term. So you're not off the hook either way. You need a plan built around you that's gonna help you be able to be on this long term or short term.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you've got to learn, we've gotta learn patterns and behaviors. It's it's it's gotta be something that you start strength training. Like, it's a non-negotiable for you to get the results that you need to have long term. Because you've seen like Kelly Osborne and like some of these people that are that are on it, they just look, they've lost so much muscle, but also fat that they they're just they're just skeletons of themselves. They and and so that's the that's the dangerous part, is it's uh is it you get on this and you start getting you start drop the weight and then you just go so far on the deep end that they can cause bigger issues later on. So that's my whole thing is is like you said, we've gotta start uh we've got to start strength training, we've got to start uh making sure that we're learning how to eat for for results long term. You know, when you're sitting down, it can't be that you're sitting down to have pizza that you're eating and that's your meal. It's gotta almost now start to change of like, hey, I only I only can consume so much. So the food that I'm consuming needs to have nutrients and vitamins and minerals to help me long term. If it's not giving you that, then uh then it has to be something to go, hey, you know what? I don't really I don't really need to have that because I know that that's gonna make me full, but it's not gonna give me my nutrients and vitamins and minerals I need.

SPEAKER_00

And people are wanting to get on this because they they become so obsessed with the scale, and they let that number on the scale dictate their happiness, and they don't care who they are, how they look. They just want that number on the scale until they get that number. What you're gonna find is a number on the scale is never enough. And you're listening to this episode because you want to hear the potential problems that come with the GLP1 and the stuff that people aren't talking about. There's a few things that I wrote down here. The first one is muscle loss, just like we talked about. About 40% of your weight loss is gonna come from lean muscle mass. With that comes strength loss. So you're older, more potential to fall. You're less independent. So you're gonna have to depend on people to do things for you because you can't open up a jar, you can't open and shut your trunk, you can't carry groceries in, you don't have the energy to do that. Poor nutrition is another one because you think that I'm on this GLP one, so I can still eat the same stuff that I was eating before. But since I'm eating less of it, it's gonna put me in enough calorie deficit where I can still lose weight. But if you don't like your body composition now, you are not gonna like

The Risks of Muscle Loss and Poor Nutrition

SPEAKER_00

your body composition when you continue to eat that food that is not serving you and you eat less of it because you're gonna have less muscle on your body. Bone density concerns, this is another one that people aren't talking about. Yes, our clients are getting older. As we age, our bones already become a lot more frail. So if you're not eating enough calories, if you're in that extreme of a calorie deficit and your bones start, you have one simple fall. You break a bone. The recovery of that as we get older becomes a lot more hard to recover from. Surgeries are a lot harder on us, and then low energy is another one, less daily movement because you're not eating enough calories. It's like trying to drive your car and not fill it up with gas. Eventually you're gonna, it's gonna run out of gas, you're stranded, you're not happy with where you're at. Metabolic adaptation is another one. Uh, for people that don't know what that means and what the GLP one's doing to you is our body is very good at adapting. So if you used to eat 2,000 calories and be able to lose weight on that, as you continue to drop your calories, our body is meant to adapt. It doesn't want to let us die. So, how does it do that? It takes muscles off muscle off of our body because that's less expensive to have on our body. It makes us look move less. It does all of these things in order to adapt to the little calories that we're giving it. And because of that, what used to be, oh, I can eat 2,000 calories and lose weight. Now, if I eat anything over a thousand calories, I put on body fat. That becomes frustrating. That's one meal out with your wife. That you can't you have one meal out and you're over your calories for that day. Not you, because you eat let's see your salad.

SPEAKER_01

I eat grass. I think the other side of it, man, and this is the this is the piece that I've I've I've seen with our clients that they've been with us and they've they've dropped some weight on their own by following our plan, and they and they might not be fast enough. Maybe they they they're just kind of maybe it's 10, 15 pounds, they want to drop 30, 40, 50 pounds. And so they get on a GLP, and then when they get on these the next thing that happens is they drop the weight. And then it's this uh thinking or this of this believing that the only reason you already said the only reason I've dropped this weight is because of the GLP. Well, then when you get off the GLP and you decide that you need to take because it's it's not cheap for individuals to take, then you you go back to your regular lifestyle, you never change your patterns, you never change your behaviors, and now you're a uh you're a victim to the GLP, meaning that your story is I can't lose weight without being on this GLP one or two or three. There's all kinds of, I can't be on this without and it's not drop weight. I gotta be able to drop weight and have to be on this. And so now you're a prisoner to never being able to because you made the decisions. Like even when you were on them, like yeah, they they sped the process up, they helped you, like there's no doubt. Yeah, but it was still you. I mean, we've got I've got clients that have come in of one I'm thinking of right now that has been consistent with strength training. When she was the heaviest she's ever been, she was strength training. No matter if she had a hurt shoulder, she was working with me and getting it done, and she got on it and she looks uh she looks amazing now. But and and her everything stayed tight and dealt the right way because she continued to do the work and continued to strength train and continue to do and she and she just used it as a as a tool instead of it being the the savior.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I said it earlier to you right before we hopped on this podcast is a lot of people look at GLP one as the plan instead of a part of the plan. And if it's your whole plan, just like you said, you're it's going to hold you prisoner to say, if I'm not on this, I can't be this person that I want to be. But it's just gotta be a tool that we can use to yes, help with the because hunger, hunger signals, hunger sound in your head, hunger noise is what I'm looking for. It's real, it's a real thing. Food noise, that's it. That's just a bullet. Yeah, that's a term. That's it's real. And so what what it does is it helps reduce that because you become less, oh, I'm craming this, I want this all the time. It kills a lot of that. Man, best example of a client that we have that is on a GLP one, and I just talked to him this morning. I'm gonna have him hop on a podcast episode because he has done it the right way. He he was on a GLP1 when he signed up with us. This guy is at this point probably about four months in, and he's down 23 pounds. Four months, that's a great pace. He's losing weight at a slow enough pace where he's able to retain his muscle. And the key reason for him able to do that is we have a nutrition plan built around him to make sure he's getting enough protein and a strength training plan around him to make sure, hey, we're strength training more than we're doing high-intensity cardio, more than we're doing all these other things that aren't going to serve us as much. We have a strength training plan, we're resting in between our sets, we're doing it the right way. And because of that, he has also changed the way that he views food and the type of food that he needs to have in his nutrition. So, this is a guy that used to be able to, we I just had to talk to him the other day. He was like, sent me a picture. He went out and got a steak for July 4th. And he's like, dude, I used to go get a 22-ounce porter house steak and just throw it down and still be hungry. And he ordered a sirloin, something smaller, it was like 10 ounces, and he goes, dude, and I was stuffed, but uh, he still prioritizes protein. But he's just these little things that he killed off about himself, it allows him to still eat the way that he needs to eat and strength train the way he needs to strength train, but ultimately just had a plan built around him. And because of that, he's doing it the right way. And so a guy like that being on the GLP one, I feel at peace because I know, hey, he's doing it the right way. So if this guy gets off of it, he understands nutrition, he understands how to strength train, he understands that he needs to hit a certain amount of steps every day. There's things that he knows that he needs to do in order to get the results, but regardless if he's on the GLP one or not, but a lot of people just don't have that plan. And so they're just 100% relying on that GLP one for the results.

SPEAKER_01

The the biggest problem is of taking such they wired your themselves taking this GOP that they're not ever so supposed to be hungry. And so if they have a little bit of hunger, then they they start to up the up the dosage. And then what starts to happen is you up that dosage so much that you have no hunker at all, and then you're not able to eat it. The the best experience and the best results that we've seen with clients is let's let's use it and let's take a let's take smaller dosages of it, but then it's going to it's going to shut up that food noise a little bit, but you're still able to to eat. And if you have, like you just said, if you have a solution and a plan and uh and you know, like, hey, this is how many grams of protein I need to be hitting on a daily basis, and now you can just be focused on that, like you said, you're gonna win uh because you're you're still eating, you're not, you're still getting the nutrients, you're still getting the vitamins, you're still doing that's the way to do it.

The Importance of Strength Training

SPEAKER_01

Quit being afraid of getting having a little bit of hunger, because that's actually a uh a positive. Yes. And and just a just a little bit of like that like reditrutide. Yeah. Reditrutide is the top of the top, and it's a it's a triple apness. But the the thing with it is it still allows you to have a little bit of of hunger unless you've gone way too crazy. Now the trisepatide, which is a step below the net, it it cuts your it blunts your uh your hunger and you don't have any. You're not hungry. Yeah, and so you can't eat. My deal is it's like getting to a place of, hey, you know what? If you just because I'm a I love food, dude. Yeah, like I'm gonna eat, like I love it. But if I if I can have something that's just going like, hey, I I don't need all that, like you said, the food noise. I don't need the the the food noise. I can still live life, still have my my my three square bills, have a couple protein shakes in between, and then seek results, that's the beautiful part of it. Yeah, but uh if you're if you're that one who you think just because I'm hungry, this is a bad thing, that's not that's not where you that's not a good place to be. Because if you're you're at a place where you're not eating at all, then then yeah, you're gonna drop. But you're gonna drop muscle, you're gonna drop uh, you're gonna drop fat, but you're also gonna lose uh that elasticity in your uh and and that's what we see with a lot of clients is they drop so quick, they lose that elasticity in their uh in their uh skin, and then next thing you know, they've got all the flu skin, and we've got even a bigger issue than we had, I mean to face.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. What they're talking about. Yeah. Man, there's probably people listening to this podcast too that aren't on a GLP one, but they're considering it. And somebody that's listening to this and just feels completely controlled by food. A lot of the reason that the noise is so loud and you crave those foods so much is because you eat that way on a regular basis. It's it's gonna be almost impossible. If you continue to eat those foods, of course you're gonna crave it because and it could be an emotional thing. There's all kinds of things around that that a coach will help you out with, but you crave those foods because it's a safe place for you. Here's what changes the game for a lot of our clients that join the Vitality Mill. The gym becomes their safe place. And then they start to eat the foods that start to serve them, make them feel better. The more that they eat those foods and the less that they have all those other things in their nutrition, they go, Man, I'm not craving that the way that I used to, because I actually show up on another level when I have these kinds of foods. Like I think I want to eat that. And they start to recognize who they are when they have foods that are serving them rather than the foods that give them that energy crash in the middle of the day, or they're drinking caffeine all the way up till 5 p.m. Like all these little things that you may not understand because it's been a pattern and a behavior that you've done for so long that you become numb to it. This is what a coach does. And a coach just makes little tweaks at a time, and those little tweaks go a long way, and it starts to mold you into the version that you want to become. And with our clients that are on the GLP1, they're on it a lot of times because they're so obsessed with the scale. And so what we do at the Vitality Mill is we shift their focus. So we're not looking at are we getting stronger? We're not looking at the scale. Are we getting stronger? Are we, how does our energy whenever we're hitting our workouts? Are we being consistent with our workouts? How many steps are we getting? So we start to shift that focus. Like, yes, of course, the scale is a metric, so we're using it, we're not completely abandoning it, but we know that if we focus on all these other things, shifting that focus to that, we can start to find wins and o's areas and show ourselves that we're making progress because our mind's happy as we're winning. So that's kind of a piece of what we do. And yeah, I mean, you want to talk about the, you know, we kind of shine some light on this, but we're super excited about the GLP 1 program that we're gonna be launching very soon. So I'll let you open that up and talk about that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so uh Christian and I were uh having the discussion about that problem of individuals dropping so much, so much muscle. And so we wanted to create a program for individuals that are on a GLP, just a six-week uh so they could come in, they could they can experience working out around taking uh take still being on the GLP, but still being it get that strength training, getting some help on the nutrition side of it, because as we talked about, is we've got there's some identity shifts that we need to make as well. Is if you've always looked at yourself as the fat guy or fat girl and this and I love food and I've got to eat this, I've got to eat that. We've got to question our stories and the things that we believe. When we change our stories or question our stories and our beliefs, we start to change our actions. And once we start to change our actions, then we can change our results. But how do we how do we shift that identity? We start to take different actions. So you start coming in and you hit three days a week of strength training with this, you start getting your steps in, you start hitting a certain amount of protein, you start following a plan and you start taking actions on this plan. Now the next day it starts to happen is your stories start to change of I have to have this, like I can't ever be off this GLP or I, whatever the story may be. Now your story starts to change because your actions have started to change. You start to prove to yourself that you're not that that individual that you thought you were. And that's how we change the identity long term. We're calling this take back your life because you're making a decision where you're you're you're going to start losing weight and you're taking your health and you're taking

Introducing the 'Take Back Your Life' Program

SPEAKER_01

it more into account. And so now you're you're you're making strides in the right direction. The last thing that we want to do is is have it cost you more uh of things that you're not gonna get back, like the muscle, the long-term, how you feel. Like Christian says, like when you start to lose bone density, these are things that are gonna be hard to uh uh to reverse long term. And so, like with this take back your life, is we just want to insert different patterns, different behaviors, so you can start to take different actions, so then you can start to change the story and belief, and then you can change your identity of hey, you know what? This is a tool, just like strength training is a tool, just like hint my protein, just like getting steps, these are just tools to help us get there. There's not if if we just if we just focused all on strength training and that's all we did seven days a week, we'd be we'd be in a bad situation. If we all we did was do cardio and we didn't do anything else, we'd be in a bad situation. So we're okay. Everything has a part, everything has a piece to the puzzle. And that's what to take back your life, six weeks. You come in, let us help you change your actions, let us start to to to help you shift your behaviors and your patterns and your stories and your beliefs. And then long term, you can start to see like one, this program works, but then two, you start to have some results that you can uh that you can sustain and maintain and and go from there. So that's what it's all about. We we're gonna launch this uh pretty quick. If it's something that you're interested in at, you can just shoot us a message with take back your life on Instagram, on Facebook at the Vitality Mill, and and we'll point you in the right direction. And or if you'll see the ads or whatever it may be and take action that way as well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And we'll close it out for another episode Inside the Mill Podcasts.

SPEAKER_01

See y'all in the next one.
