Forbidden Matches

Have you ever been warned against making a decision that somehow still felt right in your bones? Those supposedly "wrong" moves might be exactly where your greatest potential lies waiting.

Welcome to a bold exploration of lighting fires in all the wrong places, those forbidden zones where conventional wisdom says you shouldn't tread. I'm sharing my personal story of taking a job that everyone around me criticized as a terrible career move. On paper, it made zero sense: less pay, unaligned with my education, and raising eyebrows among friends and family. Yet this "mistake" introduced me to skills that became the foundation of my business and turned into one of my favorite professional experiences ever.

When we break down why the wrong places can spark the right opportunities, we discover three powerful types of fires worth lighting: the bridge burner that severs ties to outdated identities, the spotlight blaze that puts you visibly where others said you don't belong, and the campfire kindling that quietly transforms your internal landscape. Each serves a different purpose in your journey toward authentic self-expression.

Ready to become a strategic rule-breaker? I'll walk you through a complete fire lighter's toolkit - from anchor rituals that ground you when doubt creeps in, to practical exit strategies, to building your own evidence folder of successful "wrong" decisions. Plus, join me for a seven-day fire challenge designed to help you identify and take action on those forbidden matches you've been hesitating to strike.

Remember, sometimes the most life-changing fires start in all the wrong places. They burn away the shoulds and illuminate the path that only you can see. If it feels wrong to them but right to you, that might be your green light. The world doesn't need your obedience -  it needs the bold, blazing version of you that emerges when you dare to light up on your own terms.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome to Gene Nighting, the podcast where we burn the rule book, digit the goods, and light up the lives we were meant to lead. I'm your host, Carrie Lowe, candlemaker, confidence dealer, and your favorite fire starter. Around here, we speak boldly, dream wildly, and show up messy and magical. If you're done playing small and ready to own your own spark, you're in the right damn place. Now let's get lit. Hey fire starters. Welcome back to She Ignites, the home for women who would rather spark a scandal than settle into someone else's blueprint. Today we're talking about lighting fires in all the wrong places. And by wrong, I mean the places the world told you not to touch. The places that feel reckless, the places you've been warned will ruin your good girl reputation. And let me tell you, I have a fire burning on the inside just to share this with you. By the end of this episode, you're going to know how to set those metaphorical matches intentionally, not to destroy yourself, but to burn away the fences that have been keeping you pinned in. So I'm going to share a story with you, the job that was supposed to be a mistake. Several years back, I took a job that everyone said was a terrible move. It wasn't aligned with my education. It paid less, and it literally made no sense on paper. I had friends and family raise eyebrows and say, are you really going to do that? And yeah, I fucking did. Here's what happened. That wrong job introduced me to skills I never would have touched otherwise. Skills that became the foundation of my business, skills that turned out to be the flint for my fire. If I'd stayed in the safe lane, I never would have found the match. And you know what? This ended up being one of the top most favorite jobs I have ever had. So why the wrong place can be the right spark? We're told that good decisions look good to other people, but sometimes the right decision for your soul looks reckless from the outside. Why? Because most people are invested in their own comfort, and watching you light fires in forbidden zones threatens their illusion of safety. The wrong place often holds unpolished opportunities where you learn faster, connections that change your trajectory, challenges that sharpen your resilience. It's where you stop playing by their blueprint and start drafting your own. So I'm going to talk to you today about three types of wrong fires. Number one, the bridge burner. This is the decision that severs ties to an outdated identity. Quitting the job, leaving the relationship, stepping out of the role they put you in, or even you put yourself in. Burn these only when you're ready to walk into the smoke without looking back. And let me tell you, I have one hell of a story around being the bridge burner that I am still dealing with today, years later. I'll share that on another episode. Number two, the spotlight blaze. This is doing something visible that you've been told isn't for you. Posting the art, launching the podcast, wearing the outfit, starting a business, saying the opinion out loud. Why is it scary? You risk public judgment. Why it's worth it? You also risk public connection with the right people. And number three is the campfire kindling. Small, quiet fires you light just for yourself. Joining the class, exploring the hobby, investing in a skill. These don't look rebellious from the outside, but they radically change your internal landscape. So this is a question you might be asking. How do I choose which fires to light? So ask yourself these questions. Does this feel risky because it's wrong for me or because it's unfamiliar? If I never did this, would I regret it in five years? Am I trying to avoid temporary discomfort or permanent misalignment? If it's only wrong because it's unfamiliar, girl, that's your green light. Pedal to the metal. So let's talk about the fire lighters toolkit. When you start breaking rules, you're going to need tools to keep the flame controlled. So the first one is an anchor ritual, something that reminds you who you are when the world starts questioning you. My personal favorite, obviously, is a candle. But it could also be a song or a mantra. An exit plan. Even rebels need a parachute. Have a minimal backup so your fear doesn't spiral. Keep a receipts folder. Proof of the ways your so-called wrong moves paid off. So you have ammunition when doubt comes knocking at your door. So I've been talking a lot about rituals these past few episodes. So I'm going to share another one with you. The forbidden match. Close your eyes. Obviously, if you're not driving. Picture the wrong thing you've been daydreaming about, but talking yourself out of. Imagine holding a match over it. Feel the hesitation, that tightness in your chest. Now imagine striking the match and watching it catch. Not burning the whole forest, just clearing the dead brush. Say out loud. It's not wrong. It's mine. Breathe in the heat. Let it settle in your ribcage. I've also been sharing some seven-day challenges. And here's another one. This is a seven-day fire challenge. On day one, I want you to write down three wrong moves you secretly want to make. On day two, pick the smallest one and take the first step towards it. On day three, tell one safe person about it. And remember, I'm always here for you to be that safe person. On day four, journal the fears that come up about it. Get them out of your head and onto paper. On day five, do one public action connected to this wrong move. Day six, document a win or shift that came from it. Day seven, celebrate with something symbolic. Light a candle, play your power song, or toast yourself. You know what? Sometimes the most life-changing fires are the ones that start in all the wrong places. They burn away the shoulds, they illuminate the path that only you can see. So here's your permission slip. If it feels wrong to them, but right to you, strike the match and watch how fast it becomes the spark for the life you were meant to live. Now go light something up. And I'll see you next week. Well, that's it for today, babe. But your fire is just getting started. If you're feeling lit up, go ahead and hit subscribe, leave a spicy little review, and tag me at Feet Night CandleCo. So I can hype you up. Remember, the world doesn't need a quieter version of you. It needs the bold, blazing, and fully expressed you. Until next time, Keith Louie, the keyboard.
