[0:00] The Tea on Wellness — Show Intro
[1:00] How to Host a Tea Party That People Will Remember
[VIDYA]: At Tea & Turmeric we get phone calls several times a week from people who want to host a tea party and don't know where to start.
And a woman walked into our shop just last week and said, I want to host a tea party, but I'm terrified."
I asked her what scared her.
She started listing things: water temperature, soggy sandwiches, what if nobody talks, what if the scones burn, what if I look pretentious, what if people think it's weird—
I stopped her.
"What if," I said, "you just made tea?"
Welcome back to The Tea on Wellness. I'm Vidya from Tea & Turmeric in Laguna Beach. And today we're talking about something that might sound old-fashioned, maybe even a little intimidating, but I promise you, by the end of this episode, you're going to want to text someone and say, "Come over Saturday. I'm having a tea party."
Here's why this matters. We're living through what the Surgeon General calls a loneliness epidemic. It's not just that we feel disconnected, it's actually affecting our health. But here's what the research shows: it's not that we don't have people in our lives. It's that we don't have rituals with them.
We text. We scroll. We say "let's catch up soon" and never do.
A tea party isn't quaint. It's not frivolous. It's a prescription. It's a way to say: I'm carving out a few hours where you matter more than my phone. Where we're going to sit, and sip, and actually be present with each other.
That's what this episode is about. Not performing tea ceremonies. Not stressing about doing it "right." Just creating a simple, beautiful ritual that brings people closer.
[2:40] Why Tea Parties Bring People Together
[VIDYA]: I learned this a long time ago, in two very different moments.
When my family moved from our small town in Eastern Canada to the big city of Ottawa, my mom and grandma took my sisters and me to high tea at the Château Laurier—the grandest hotel in the city. I still remember the hush of the room, the gleam of the silverware, the scent of warm scones. I wore white gloves and a fascinator for the very first time and felt like I'd stepped into another world.
But long before that elegant afternoon, tea was already our anchor.
Every day after school, my sisters and I would sit with our grandma for milky chai and homemade snacks. It wasn't strong or grown-up, it was soft, sweet, and safe. She poured it into little cups, the kettle whistled, and somehow the world slowed down.
That simple ritual taught me what tea really is. It's not about fancy china or perfect etiquette. It's a pause. A bridge. A way of connecting.
And that's the spirit you want when you host a tea party.
[4:10] Loose Leaf Tea vs Tea Bags for Entertaining
[VIDYA]: So let me tell you about Miss Gladys.
A few months ago, a woman named Maria came into the shop with her daughters. They were planning a surprise ninetieth birthday tea for their grandmother, Miss Gladys. Maria was nervous. She wanted it to feel special, but she didn't want to overcomplicate it. She didn't want to mess it up.
I pulled her over to the tea wall and said, "Okay, here's what we're going to do."
First question: loose leaf or tea bags?
Maria asked me that immediately. And here's my answer, loose leaf, every time. It tastes better, it smells better, and honestly, it just makes everything feel more intentional. But I get it. Loose leaf can feel messy, especially when you're hosting.
So here's the hack: we have these empty, organic, unbleached tea bags. You fill them yourself with loose leaf tea. You get all the flavor and beauty of loose leaf, but your guests can brew without strainers or fuss. Easy. Elegant. Done.
[5:45] How to Choose the Best Tea for a Tea Party
[VIDYA]: Now, choosing the teas. This is where people freeze up. There are so many options. But I gave Maria a simple formula, and it's the same one I'm giving you.
You need three teas: one bold black for the tea traditionalists, one caffeine-free herbal for your friends who are sensitive or pregnant or just don't want the buzz, and one green tea for the adventurous ones.
Maria picked up Moonlit Earl Grey, a beautiful, bold black tea, and said, "Is this too fancy?"
I told her: fancy is the point. This isn't Tuesday afternoon tea. This is a ninetieth birthday. We need a tea that tastes like a hug.
Then I handed her Piña Colada herbal. It's this tropical, coconutty dreamy blend that smells like vacation. She literally laughed. "Wait," she said, "tea can taste like this?"
That's when I knew we'd found it.
For the green, we chose Cherry Blossom, light, floral, delicate. Perfect for spring.
Two days before the party, Maria called. "I'm spiraling about the green tea. What if the water's too hot and it gets bitter? What if I ruin it?"
[7:20] How to Cold Brew Green Tea Overnight
[VIDYA]: This is where most people quit.
But there's a hack so simple it feels like cheating.
I told her: Don't brew it hot.
Here's what you do. The night before your party, fill a pitcher with cold water. Add a few teaspoons of your green tea, loose leaf, right into the water. Put it in the fridge. And go to sleep.
While you're dreaming, the tea is steeping. Slowly. Gently. Impossible to ruin.
The next morning, you strain it, and you have this delicate, floral iced tea that tastes like spring. No timer. No thermometer. No anxiety. Just magic.
Maria did exactly that. And when her guests arrived, she had this gorgeous pitcher of cold-brewed Cherry Blossom sitting on the table like she'd been doing this her whole life.
[8:25] How to Brew Tea for a Crowd Without Stress
[VIDYA]: For the hot teas, here's all you need to know.
Before you brew, rinse your teapot with hot water. Let it sit for thirty seconds, then dump it out. That keeps your tea from losing heat the second it hits cold ceramic.
Then: one teaspoon of tea per cup of water, plus one extra teaspoon for the pot. So if you're making six cups, that's seven teaspoons total. It's that simple.
If you're hosting for the first time, aim for six to eight guests. That's the sweet spot, small enough to manage, big enough to feel lively. Set up two or three small teapots so everyone can try different blends. One black, one green, one herbal. Balanced and beautiful.
[9:10] An Easy Tea Party Menu Everyone Will Love
[VIDYA]: Now let's talk food. This is where people panic.
You don't need twenty little items or three days of prep. Think of your table in threes. Something savory, something baked, something sweet.
For savory: cucumber-mint sandwiches. Toast with turmeric hummus. Done.
For baked: scones. Plain, or lemon-cardamom if you want to get fancy. Serve them with jam and cream. And here's your one etiquette rule, never cut a scone with a knife. Break it gently by hand. That's it. That's the only rule that matters.
For sweet: coconut macaroons. Or little cups of pineapple-mint fruit salad. Keep the portions small. Easy to pick up. Clean and simple.
That's your whole spread.
[10:45] The Tea Party Story That Changed Everything
[VIDYA]: Three weeks after Miss Gladys's party, an older woman walked into the shop. She moved slowly, carefully. She had kind eyes.
She asked for Moonlit Earl Grey, Piña Colada, and Cherry Blossom. By name.
I said, "Those are beautiful choices. What's the occasion?"
She smiled. "I'm Miss Gladys. Those were the teas at my birthday party. My granddaughters surprised me. And it was..." She paused. Her voice got quieter. "It was the most seen I've felt in years."
That's when I understood something.
A tea party isn't about the tea. It's about witnessing. It's about saying: I will stop time for you.
[11:40] Tea Party Etiquette: What Actually Matters
[VIDYA]: Okay, here's what I need you to unlearn.
You don't need the perfect teapot. You don't need matching cups. You don't need everything to be Instagram-ready.
My grandma served us chai in chipped ceramic mugs, and we thought it was heaven.
The wellness industry wants you to believe you need to buy your way into connection. You don't. You just need hot water, tea leaves, and the willingness to say, "Come over. Bring nothing. Just sit with me."
And listen, you can't do this wrong. You really can't.
Someone will spill. Someone will talk with their mouth full. The tea might get cold. The scones might be a little lopsided. None of it matters.
What matters is that you made space. You slowed down. You said, "You are worth two hours of my undivided attention."
That's the whole thing.
[13:00] Your Tea Party Challenge
[VIDYA]: So here's what I want you to do.
Think of one person who needs to feel seen. Not "let's grab coffee sometime." An actual date. Next Saturday at three. Text them right now. Tell them you're making tea.
Pick your three teas. Make a batch of scones, or honestly, buy them. Set the table. Let the kettle whistle. Let the conversation drift.
I promise you, they will remember it for the rest of their life.
