Moving into a house we built together? Exciting.
Actually packing up five years of apartment life? Not so much.
In this Between Breaths bonus episode, I'm sharing the chaos of moving as an adult—from cardboard boxes and clothes that definitely aren't fitting again to finally escaping the downstairs neighbor who apparently believes 2 a.m. is the perfect time for loud movies, music... and everything else.
It's funny, a little sentimental, and a reminder that sometimes we're not just packing up our stuff—we're letting go of old versions of ourselves, too.
Welcome to Between Breaths.
Between Breaths Check In
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to Just Breathe Confessionals. This is Between Breaths. My bonus series where we press pause on the bigger stories and just talk about whatever life is handing me in the moment.
Why Moving Hits Hard
SPEAKER_00So let's talk about moving. I'm in the middle of moving right now, and wow. Moving as an adult is stressful. What the heck?
Childhood Moves And Instability
SPEAKER_00The funny thing is, I moved a lot as a kid, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that. My mom struggled with mental health issues, and one of those lovely side effects was that she would kind of freak out if we stayed in one place longer than a couple of years. So we moved a lot. Houses, apartments, more apartments. It felt constant.
Excitement About The New Home
SPEAKER_00I got so used to it that I kind of lived out of boxes as a kid because it just felt easier that way. Why unpack everything when there was a pretty good chance you'd be packing it all up again? You know what I mean? But eventually I grew out of that.
Choosing Roots As An Adult
SPEAKER_00As an adult, I put down roots. I realized that I get to choose the lease terms now. I get to decide how long I stay somewhere, and there's something really comforting about that. The apartment I live in now, I've lived in five years. So moving is kind of a big deal right now. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty excited about this move. Who wouldn't be excited about moving into a home that you and your partner built together? And by built together, I mean he's literally built everything by himself. That's a pretty incredible thing.
The Stuff We Accumulate
SPEAKER_00And I'm excited to be done with apartment life. I've literally lived in apartments my whole life. No more getting woken up at 2 a.m. in the morning because the guy downstairs decided it was the perfect time to watch a movie at full volume, which pretty sure it's Lore of the Rings most of the time. No more random blast of music coming through the floor. And no more hearing way more about his relationship than I ever wanted to know. Let's just say our downstairs neighbor has never really understood the concept of quiet hours. So while packing may be driving me slightly insane, the thought of having our own space makes it a little easier. A place that's ours, a place that's quiet, a place where I don't have to wonder what fresh chaos is happening downstairs at midnight. It's just the packing part that sucks. I just never realized how much stuff I've collected over five years of living in the same apartment. I've been cleaning things out and finding stuff I don't even remember buying, or things that were gifts and I can't remember who gave them to me. It's kind of wild actually. And then there's the clothes. The clothes I kept because I thought maybe someday they'd fit me in. The clothes that have been sitting in the back of my closet for years because I wasn't quite ready to let them go. And somewhere between packing boxes and sorting piles, I've had to admit that they're probably never
Letting Go Of Old Versions
SPEAKER_00going to fit. Which sounds silly because they're just clothes. But I think sometimes we hold on to things because of who we used to be or who we thought we'd be again someday. And letting go of them feels a little bigger than just cleaning out a closet. Every box feels like a decision. Keep it, donate it, throw it away. And somehow all of those decisions become exhausting.
Decision Fatigue And Hope Ahead
SPEAKER_00So yes, moving, very excited. Packing? Not so much. Because right now, life is all boxes and bubble wrap and decisions. But soon, it'll be movie nights in a brand new living room, decorating our own space, and finally feeling at home. For now, I'm just somewhere between breaths.
