Have you been told your thyroid is "normal"… yet you still feel exhausted, foggy, inflamed, or like something just isn't right?
In this episode, I'm breaking down one of the biggest misconceptions in women's health: that a "normal" TSH automatically means your thyroid is healthy. We'll talk about why TSH is only one piece of the puzzle, what a complete thyroid panel actually includes, and why so many women continue struggling even after being told everything looks fine—or after starting thyroid medication.
By the end of this episode, you'll understand what questions to ask, what testing provides the full picture, and why your thyroid has never been the enemy. It's been trying to tell you something all along.

Welcome to the Wellness Well, the place where faith and biblical wisdom meet God's design for healing, and where Jesus Himself is waiting to meet you exactly where you are. I'm Heidi, a certified integrative health practitioner. And like the woman at the well in John 4, I believe our healing journey is so much more than fixing symptoms. It's about being restored to the person God always created you to be. This is our sacred space for honest, no-fluff conversations about what our body is really trying to tell us. Root cause healing that goes deeper than quick fixes and breaking generational cycles that have kept us stuck for way too long. So take a deep breath, say a little prayer, and meet me at the well.

My thyroid has been borderline low for years. Borderline. That's what they call it. Not low enough to treat, not normal enough to leave alone, just borderline. Right in the middle of absolutely no answer. And for the longest time I just accepted that. Okay, borderline. Cool. Thanks. Super helpful. I'll just go home and continue being exhausted with no explanation. Yes, I'm being a little sarcastic. But only a little. Because if you ever have sat in a doctor's office and been handed a word like borderline, like it's a diagnosis. But if you've been there, you know exactly what I mean. It sounds like information. It is not information. It's a shrug in medical terminology. What I actually wanted to know was what is my thyroid trying to tell me? And why is nobody asking that question? I've watched women I love navigate thyroid issues for years. Some on medication, one with Hashimoto's, and all of them still feeling off in ways their prescriptions never quite touched. And I've worked with many women in this space whose thyroid story sounds exactly the same. Something is clearly wrong. The labs say otherwise. The medication doesn't fully fix it. And nobody seems curious about why. So today, we get curious. Hi, I'm Heidi. Welcome back to the Wellness Well Unmasked. We are in the body pillar today, the place in the series where we learn to hear what symptoms are actually saying instead of just quieting them. And I want to be up front. If you have thyroid issues, have been told you're borderline, or you're on thyroid medication and still feel like you're dragging yourself through your days, this episode and the free guide in the show notes are both for you. So I want to start here in Proverbs 20, verse 27. The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord, searching out the innermost parts. The Lord searches the innermost parts, not the presenting symptom, not the surface number, the inner workings, the hidden things, what's actually happening underneath. That's the level of investigation I want to bring to the thyroid conversation today. Because medicine, when it only runs TSH, is doing the opposite. It's looking at one data point on the surface and calling the case closed. And God never looks at just the surface. So let's go deeper together. I have a three-part framework for you today. These aren't just three separate ideas, they are one connected picture, told three different ways. By the time we get through all of it, the way that you see your thyroid is going to be completely different. Ready? Let's go. So TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. And here's the first thing to understand about it. TSH is not produced by your thyroid. It's produced by your pituitary gland, a tiny structure at the base of your brain. And its job is to signal your thyroid to make more hormone. So when your doctor runs TSH and says everything looks normal, what they have actually checked is how loud your pituitary is talking right now. That's it. That's the whole test. They have not checked whether your thyroid is responding to that signal. They have not checked whether the hormone your thyroid makes is converting into the active usable form. They have not checked whether your immune system is quietly attacking your thyroid tissue. They have checked one signal from one gland and used it to represent an entire system. Let me put it this way: imagine you're trying to understand a whole conversation, but you can only hear how loud the person on the one end of the phone is talking. You can't hear what they are saying, whether the other person is answering, whether the call even went through. That's TSH in isolation. It tells you the volume, it doesn't tell you the conversation. They are TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and TGAP, which is thyroid gobulin antibody. I know that sounds like a lot. The free guide in the show notes breaks down every single one of these into plain English. What it measures, what it means, what to ask your doctor. Grab it. It's worth having in your hands. Here's the thing that genuinely changed how I see all of this, and how I work with women who have been chasing thyroid answers for years with ever quite getting there. Your thyroid is not the root of the problem, it is the rapport card. Your thyroid sits in a system, a whole interconnected web of glands, hormones, and feedback loops, and it is exquisitely sensitive to everything else going on in that system. When you are under chronic stress, when your cortisol has been elevated for months or years, your body makes a decision. It slows down thyroid function. Not because your thyroid is broken, because your body in survival mode considers metabolism and reproduction as luxuries that it cannot currently afford. It's prioritizing wisely, honestly, but at a cost. Your gut is also in this picture. And this is significant because a significant portion of T4, the storage form of the thyroid hormone that converts to T3, the actual active usable form in the gut. A compromised gut means compromised conversion. Hear that again. A compromised gut means compromised conversion. You can have a perfectly functioning thyroid gland and still have low active thyroid hormone because the conversion pathway is broken downstream. Mold exposure and toxic burden are major thyroid disruptors too. Something I found in my own testing and something I see consistently in women that I work with. A nutritional deficiency, selenium, iodine, zinc, and iron mean that the thyroid literally doesn't have the raw materials it needs to do its job, even if it wants to. And if you are treating your thyroid without looking at your adrenals, your gut, your stress load, your toxic burden, and your nutritional status, you are treating the rapport card, not the student. Think about that for a second. If a child is failing every class, you don't just forge better grades on the report card and call it fixed. You ask what is going on with that child? What are they carrying? What is in the way of them being able to learn? The report card is the data. The student is the whole story. Your thyroid is the report card. You are the student. And the real question has always been: what is going on underneath that is making it hard for your body to thrive? And here's the honest truth about why so many women on thyroid medication still don't feel well. The medication improves the grades on the report card, but the student is still struggling because nobody asked why. And I want to say something here that most women with Hashimoto's have never been told. Generally, I've never been told. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is not primarily a thyroid disease. It is an autoimmune condition in which your immune system is mistakenly attacking your thyroid tissue. Your thyroid is the victim in this scenario. Your immune system is the one causing the damage. And yet, the standard of care is to medicate the thyroid. Give it the hormones, it can no longer produce properly because it's being attacked. Which, yes, addresses the downstream symptom. But while you're treating the thyroid, the immune system attack continues. It's unchecked. It's like mopping a flooded floor while the tap is still open for the door. You can mop really well. You can mop heroically. The floor is still getting wetter. Addressing Hashimoto's properly requires asking, why is my immune system being attacked? What set this off? Because autoimmune conditions don't happen randomly. They are almost always connected to gut permeability, what's often called leaky gut, where the immune system gets exposed to things it doesn't see and starts misfiring. They're connected to chronic inflammation, to unresolved infections, to toxic burden, to long-term stress grinding the immune system down. The two markers on the full thyroid panel that show you whether an autoimmune process is happening are the TPO antibodies and the TGEB, the thyroid globulin antibody. Those are the two that most nobody orders. And without them, Hashimoto's can go completely undetected, meaning women are being medicated for a condition that has never even been properly diagnosed. You cannot address what you cannot see. And right now, the most conventional thyroid testing is deliberately not looking. So here's the thing I want you to carry out of this episode. Your thyroid is a messenger. It is communicating something about what's happening in your adrenals, your gut, your immune system, your stress load, your nutritional status, your toxic burden. Every signal it sends is your body trying to reach you. The same body God designed, the same body he described as fearfully and wonderfully made, the same body whose innermost parts he searches and sees. The question has never been what is wrong with your thyroid. The question is what is your thyroid trying to tell you? That shift from fix it to listen to it is where the real answers begin. And it's the foundation of everything we do here. So let's enter into our reflection practice. I have three questions for you today. Honest ones. Sit with each of them. Have you ever had the full thyroid panel, all six markers, or just TSH? Look back at your labs. And if you're not sure, that's probably already useful information. If you are on thyroid medication and still don't feel well, has anyone ever asked you about what might be driving the thyroid to struggle in the first place? Has anyone looked upstream? What would it feel like to finally have someone look at the whole picture? Not just the one number that's the easiest one to run. And your one practice. Download the free thyroid guide in the show notes. Read it. Bring it to your next appointment. Or use the link inside to connect with me and we'll run the full panel together. You don't have to keep guessing about this. The information exists. So you just need someone who is willing to actually look. So let's let me pray for you. Father God, for the woman who has been told she's borderline for years and never got a real answer. For the woman who is on medication and still waking up exhausted and wondering if this is how it's just gonna be. You see it all, and you are not confused by any of it. I pray that these women leave this episode with something she hasn't had in a long time. Hope. Not the wishful kind, but the grounded kind. The kind that comes from finally understanding that her body is not broken. It's been communicating. And there are real answers waiting on the other side of better questions. Give her the courage, Lord, to advo advocate for herself, to ask for the full panel, to find the practitioner willing to look and remind her that the God who searches her innermost parts has never once been stumped by what he found there. In Jesus' precious name. Amen. Two things I want you to do right after this. One, grab the free thyroid panel guide in the show notes. It's a one-pager that breaks down all six markers in plain language, tells you exactly what each one reveals, and gives you the words to use at your next appointment. It's also got a link for you to connect with me and we can run that panel directly. Knowledge is power, and this guide is your starting point. And two, if this episode stirred something in you, if you've been dealing with this for a long time and nobody has ever looked at the whole picture, reach out. That's exactly the kind of work I do. The connect link is in the show notes. And next week, episode 39. And friend, this one is going to hit differently. We're slowing all the way down and looking at a single Hebrew word that completely rewrites the definition of health that we've all been handed. Not labs, not protocols, not a scale number, one word that God declared over his people that changes everything about how you pursue healing. Episode 39. Don't miss it. Your thyroid is not your problem. It's your messenger, and it's been trying to reach you for a very long time. Today is a good day to start listening. Thanks for joining me today.
