Welcome to the Dx2 podcast hosted by sisters Denise and Debra. We are all about finding balance in the various parts of life. Using the Wheel of Life as our guide, we explore how to keep each spoke rolling smoothly, from health and wellness to finances, education to relationships and spirituality, as well as mental and emotional growth. Join us for real conversations, practical tips, and a few laughs as we share stories, insights, and strategies to help you create a life that feels balanced purposeful and designed by you One tool that we like to use in our lives and that we'll be addressing throughout our podcast is the wheel of life. What's the wheel of life, Debbie? So the wheel of life, basically you think of, well, I think of like a bicycle wheel that has, it's round, but there's spokes going out from the center. So in the wheel of life, usually there'll be six to eight spokes. There could be more, there can be less, but each spoke will represent kind of a focus area in your life. Everyone has different things they like to focus on or want to focus on, but there are generalized areas of focus that each spoke would represent. So it could be education, one could be finance, one could be family, could be fitness, could be spirituality, could be creativity. You said finance, right? Yeah. Yeah. So there, there are lots of different spokes. Our dad teaches about this concept in his class. And one time I remember he, he had eight spokes. He has eight children. Yeah. So, so he personalized it for his relationship with his children. So you can, you can be as general or as specific as you want. So he did it with the children, but you can do it with the major aspects of your life as well. Yeah. So that's the advanced version. So you have your main circle that has the spokes. And then for him off of his family spoke, he drew a connecting line with another wheel. And then each of the children and our mom, his wife were each one of the spokes on that connected wheel under the category of family. So that's like, you can branch out and get real detailed and real specific. So even like with the finance spoke, you could extend it and do investment. You could do income. You could do side hustle income. You could do savings, whatever it could be. So you can get really detailed about it or keep it really basic concept under the original wheel of life. Right. To start a wheel of life, pick six to eight area of your life that you want to focus on that you can evaluate and see how you're doing in that. So how do you evaluate the areas of the wheel, Debra? So you rate them between zero to 10. Where's the zero? So zero would be at the center of the wheel and then 10 would be on the outside, like the rolling part of the wheel, the perimeter of the wheel. So say finances, back to finances, is one of your areas is a focus in your life. How's it going between zero and 10 for you? Would you rate yourself at a one? Would you rate yourself at a five? Where would you rate it? So you keep it zero to 10 and then rate each area. So are you rating it as you currently are or as you want to be? Some of us live in want to be land. You have to write where you are because we're looking at basically how's your life rolling along right now on your wheel of life. So it's, you have to assess where you are and then you can kind of create a plan for where you want to go. So if you have everything's that, let's say a five, except for one thing is that an eight, maybe you want to scale back on the eight and bring it down to a seven or a six or a five. So ultimately your wheel of life rolls smoother, or you could say I want to focus on these other areas and bring them up to an eight and then eventually bring all of the fives out to an eight. Does that make sense? That makes sense to me. Okay. So for some, most people are, it's a little jagged. So you would rate each area and then connect the dots. So make a dot on your spoke for where that area is or where you are in that area. So a two, a four, a 10, a six, a five, and then connect them and see how much of a circle or a wheel it is. And that will tell you how your life is rolling. It's an objective view of how your life truly is going. And can give you areas where you want to focus more on, or you focused enough on this area, maybe scale back the focus there and shift. So the purpose of this tool is not judgment. No. So sometimes you're at a one. We'll just take something. Say your finances are at a one. Your job gives you income, but you have a lot of debt or you haven't saved very much and you feel like your financial situation is a one or a two. That's not judgment. That's just how it is. And if you are assessing it, then you can do something about it. You can change it intentionally. So the purpose of the wheel is is not judgment. The purpose of the wheel is to explore your life and assess how things are actually going. Then you can celebrate the things that are going well and you can not beat yourself up about the ones that are not, but recognize where they are and intentionally change things in your life for more balance to bring, to raise the score on those things so that you can have more satisfaction in your life more happiness in your life more balance so that you roll not you have a smooth that's not a good sound we don't want a hard clunky rough ride we want a smooth ride and your wheel will look different throughout a year if you did it every six months or every year it will look different if you are making intentional actions even if you're not making intentional actions if you're just rolling around rolling along on your wheel it's going to look different whether you want it to or not yeah because you're moving forward or you're moving backwards sometimes we're just stagnant and we're staying steady but usually you're forwards or you're backwards yes yeah so and I think it's better like in all honesty life will roll roll more smoothly even if everything is at a two rather than having six things that are two and one thing at an eight and one thing at a ten that's going to be a rough run That's an out of balance life. Yes. Yes, it is. Yeah. So it's not to, the goal isn't to have tens in every, every category. Maybe ultimately, you know, ultimately that's what we call the imperfect perfection. Yes. Or what is it? Functionally perfect? Functionally perfect, yeah. The smoother it is, the more all of the numbers are, or the closer all of the numbers are together. Like if they're all twos or all threes, or all fives or all sixes, you'll be more functionally perfect than if it's two, six, eight, seven, ten, jagged rough ride. Yeah. Jagged wheels don't roll. So the goal is the imperfect perfection. Yeah. Functional perfection. Functional perfection. Functional perfection is what we're after. Not actual perfection, but functional perfection. Yes. Or imperfectly perfect. They both work. So let's go through just some of what those areas could be for people. Okay. Some of them that I think of are, I already mentioned, we've got education, we've got spirituality, there's fitness, nutrition, there's the financial and the family that we already talked about. There can also be social. Okay. Yes. Should be social. There could be recreation or play. Yep. Your career can be on there. You said fitness. Yeah. You could also do physical activity because some people don't like to exercise, but it's important to be physically active, taking walks. Movement. Yeah. Movement. Do some kind of movement. It could be... You said diet. I said nutrition. Nutrition. Yeah. So you could... It could be nutrition. It could be diet. It could be how often you like cooking. What's your cooking like? Do I eat at home? Do I eat out at fast food? Or do I eat out at high quality restaurants? How are your relationships doing? How's your creativity going? There are a lot of different spokes that you could name. And the spokes are yours. You can name them whatever you want. Whatever is important to you in your life, you can put on those spokes. see how you're doing in those areas. See how it's rolling. Yeah. But there should be, I think at least six to eight. Yeah. More than that gets a little hairy and less than that's not enough. Yeah. So it's too narrow of a life. Very narrow. So I think that the main ones we could recommend would be relationships, finance, Spirituality. Spirituality. Health. Would you do health or? You could do health. I like to break the health up because to me the movement is part of health. The nutrition is part of health. And then ultimately it all has to do with your health. Yes. Yes. They all do. Yes. But you can do them whatever you want. Yeah. You could break them up into that. I always think education is important because whether you're in school or not can Continual learning is important. Yes. In one way or another. And then play or recreation or socialization. Something that gets you out with other people or doing other things. Yeah. So those are some of the main ones that, you know, we could recommend. But your life is yours and your will is yours and it's not going to look like anybody else's. So find the things in your life that are major to you or important to you and put your wheel together and we'll put a link in the show notes for the worksheet that we have for you to use and you can print out as many as you want and evaluate yourself honestly openly you don't have to share it with anybody if you don't want to no I usually don't it's just for me yeah it's just for you you could do it as a family if you wanted to or as a couple if you wanted to but we're going to focus on the personal one so we'll put that a link to that worksheet in the show notes and you can use it as many times as you want yeah my recommendation would be to get the basic categories down and then later on or if you feel comfortable or if there's one of the spokes you really want to focus on extend it out or do another printout and then do the categories under that spoke like we were talking about the family and then each of the kids names or whatever category it might be might be good idea to break it down even further but that's that's down the road that's the advanced version yeah start simple yeah and roll have a smooth smooth ride yes you want it to be to function functionally perfect not perfect perfect we just yeah it's i think it's unrealistic to expect true perfection but we can have functional perfection yes perfect let us know if you have any questions we would love to answer your questions you can put it in the comments and we'll take a look at them and answer whatever you have thanks thanks for listening to the d times two podcast with denise and deborah we hope you enjoyed today's episode be sure to subscribe and share it with someone who's ready to roll toward a more balanced life your support means the world to us and just a quick note we're sharing our own experiences and ideas not professional advice Always do your own research and talk to a qualified professional before making big decisions.
