Have you ever looked at a situation in your life and realized, "This thing has stayed too long?"
Maybe it's grief that has lingered longer than necessary. Maybe it's fear, disappointment, bitterness, regret, shame, anxiety, or a painful season that has quietly taken up permanent residence in your heart.
In this powerful episode of Letting Go, Living Free, Kathryn Brown challenges listeners to recognize when something that was only meant to be temporary has overstayed its welcome. Drawing from Scripture, practical wisdom, and personal reflection, she explores how God never intended for us to live captive to yesterday's pain while He is calling us into tomorrow's promise.

Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Letting Go Living Free Podcast. This is where faith meets healing and broken hearts find hope. I'm your host, Catherine Brown, and today I want to speak to the person who feels like they've been carrying the same burden for too long. Maybe it's grief, maybe it's fear, maybe it's anxiety, maybe it's disappointment, maybe it's a wound that happened years ago, but somehow it still affects you today. Whatever that thing is, I came with a message from God today. This thing has outstayed its welcome. It may have visited your life, but it was never supposed to be a permanent residence. So today we're going to talk about recognizing when a season has lasted long enough, how God calls us forward and how we walk into freedom that He has already prepared for us. So take a deep breath, pull up your chair, get your journal, grab your coffee, and let's get started. Have you ever had a guest come and stay a little bit longer than expected? You know, at first you're excited that they're there, you make the necessary accommodations, you know, you adjust your schedule, you make room, oh, it's wonderful. You get to giggle, you get to laugh, you get to reminisce. But eventually there comes a moment when you think, it's time. Not because you don't love them, not because you're angry, not because anything's happened, but because they were never meant to stay forever. And some of us are hosting things in our lives that have overstayed their welcome. Fear has stayed too long, bitterness has stayed too long, regret has stayed too long, shame has stayed too long, disappointment has stayed too long, the heartbreak happened, the betrayal happened, the loss happened, the diagnosis happened, the rejection happened, but what happened was never supposed to define the rest of your life. There comes a point when you have to stand up spiritually and say, This thing has outstayed its welcome. One of my favorite passages is found in Deuteronomy 2 and 3. This is where God tells Israel, you have come past this mountain long enough. Turn you northward. In modern English, God is saying, You've gone around this thing long enough. Think about it. The wilderness was never supposed to be their destination. It was supposed to be a transition, but they got stuck. And many believers are doing the same thing. They're circling the same hurt, the same offense, the same disappointment, the same failure, the same fear year after year. Conversation after conversation, memory after memory. But today I believe God is saying, you've been around this mountain long enough. It's time to move. It's time to heal. It's time to trust again, and it's time to live again. One of the greatest mistakes we make is giving permanent residence to temporary struggle. Every day we replay the hurt. Every day we revisit the wound. Every day we rehearse the offense. And before long, the pain begins occupying more space than God's promises. The enemy wants us to build a home around pain. But God wants to build our future around his promises. We read in Isaiah 43, 18 and 19, remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. Notice God didn't deny the former things existed. He simply refused to let them control the future. And some of us need to make the same decision. What happened does matter. But what God is doing next matters more. In Mark chapter 10, blind Bartimaeus sat by the roadside begging. Day after day, year after year. Everybody knew him as the blind man. That was his reputation. That was his identity. That was his limitation. But one day Jesus passed by and Bartimaeus refused to be silent. You see, when the crowd told him to be quiet, he shouted even louder. Why? Because he had reached his limit. He had become tired of accepting what God never intended to be permanent. Some of you are reaching that same place right now. You're tired of fear, tired of depression, tired of surviving, tired of feeling stuck. And that's not a bad thing. Sometimes holy frustration is what pushes us toward freedom. Sometimes you have to become sick and tired of what you've been settling for. And sometimes you have to say, I appreciate everything God has taught me through this season, but this thing, as I'll state, it's welcome. You see, the enemy wants us to believe that this is just how it's always going to be. But that's a lie from the pit of hell. God is a God of seasons. Winter doesn't last forever, night doesn't last forever, storms don't last forever, and neither will this. Psalms 126 and 5 says, They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Not might reap, not could reap, they shall reap. God never wastes tears. Every tear you've cried, every prayer you've prayed, every moment you trusted Him when nothing made sense. God has seen it all, and your harvest is coming. Now I want to share with you a few practical tools that you can use immediately moving forward. Number one, identify the thing. Ask yourself honestly, what exactly has overstayed its welcome? Is it fear? Is it resentment? Is it insecurity? Is it grief? You cannot confront what you refuse to identify. So name it. Bring it into the light, then surrender it fully to God. Tool number two, change the conversation. Every time the negative thought appears, answer it with scripture, which is why you have to know your word. When fear says, you'll never make it, you've got to reply with I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me. When discouragement says, it's too late, you've got to reply with God, all things are possible. Don't let your pain do all the talking. Tool number three, take one step forward. Healing isn't always a leap. Sometimes it's a step. So make the call, join the class, start the ministry, apply for the job, take the walk, schedule the appointment, write the first page. Forward movement breaks stagnation. Now, I want you to say this with me. Fear, you've outstayed your welcome. Bitterness, you've outstayed your welcome. Shame, you've outstayed your welcome. Hopelessness, you've outstayed your welcome. Anxiety, you've outstayed your welcome. Self-doubt, you've outstayed your welcome. I belong to God. I am not defeated. I am not forgotten. I am not abandoned. I am moving forward. By the grace of God, I am healing. And by the power of God, I am overcoming. And by faith, my best days are still ahead. Now, as we prepare to close, I want you to ask yourself, what thing has been occupying space in your life for too long? Ask yourself, have I become more comfortable with my struggle than with God's promises? What mountain have I been circling repeatedly? And what would change if I truly believed God had something better ahead? And my final reflection question is, what step can I take this week toward freedom? Write those answers down, pray over them, and let God begin the process of moving you forward. Before I end this podcast, I would love the opportunity to pray for you. So let's pray. Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, I pray for every listener right now. Lord, you know exactly what the thing is. You know the burden they've carried, you know the tears they've cried, you know the prayers they've prayed, you know the disappointment they've endured. Today, Father, I ask you to move by your power. Break every chain that has held them captive. Break every cycle that has kept them stuck. Break every lie that has convinced them they cannot move forward. Lord, breathe fresh hope into every weary heart. Restore joy where sorrow has lingered. Restore peace where anxiety has ruled. Restore faith where discouragement has tried to settle. I declare that fear must leave, shame must leave, bitterness must leave, hopelessness must leave. And every assignment of the enemy against their mind, purpose, calling, and future is broken in the name of Jesus. Father, give them strength for a new season, give them courage for a new beginning, give them faith to believe that better days are ahead. I pray that they would rise from this moment stronger than before, more confident than before, and more convinced than ever that you are working all things together for their good. We declare glory, we declare healing, we declare freedom, and we declare that what has overstayed its welcome is coming to an end. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for joining me for today's episode of Letting Go Living Free. If this message encouraged you today, I want you to do something simple but powerful. And this message may be exactly what they need to begin moving forward. Remember, you're not stuck, you are not defeated, you are not forgotten, and whatever has been lingering in your life longer than it should have, it does not have the final word. God does. So until next time, keep letting go, keep living free, and remember your best days are not behind you. They're still ahead. I'll see you on the next episode.
