This is episode three. In this series, we go through a list of things to be grateful for. They're broad, they're relatable to most people, and they're just things to help give you perspective on the weekend because we all got stuff going on behind the scenes, including myself. Um, and today I have a special guest, and I'm gonna have this guest say hello themselves. Welcome.
SPEAKER_00Hello, and I am back.
SPEAKER_01It is Grant, my husband Grant. Lainey is currently sleeping, our daughter Lainey, she is asleep. It is seven in the morning, so we're taking advantage. And Grant is joining me today for the Gratitude series. And Grant helped contribute to this list today, and we're just gonna go through it and talk about some things in life that are pretty awesome that we take for granted and hopefully just bring some light and joy to your day and your weekend and your Sunday.
SPEAKER_00So I like doing this on a Sunday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Grant, thanks for being here today.
SPEAKER_00And uh I didn't have a choice, she's holding a gun in my head.
SPEAKER_01No, you guys can't see it, but that's true. No, I'm kidding. Um, we've had a rough weekend. My dad is back in the ICU, so prayer is appreciated just for everybody listening. Um, it's been tough, and Grant was super helpful yesterday. We brought Lainey to the hospital, and um, we would just appreciate prayer, so I'm just putting that out in the world before we dive in. Okay, so let's kick it off. I'm gonna kick it off, and Grant, um, I'll add a little bit to ones that I want to add to, and if you want to, you can. But when we get to the ones that you've added. Yeah, and we you can dive into those a little deeper. But um, and some of these um were given to me by listeners. So excited about that. The first one is supportive people who love you outside of your body and your appearance. And I think that's more applicable, especially for men listening or grant, just people who love you for who you are and don't really care what you look like. Um, and I liked this one. This was submitted because um this makes me think of my husband, but also just my best friends and people who have been there in my life no matter what. And it also on the flip side does make me think of people who made me feel like they did care. And it's like make gives you perspective of where you are in life and how much you've matured that you only surround yourself with people who love you for who you are.
SPEAKER_00I didn't see this full list before. Um, and I definitely didn't see that one. It's sad that that's even a thing. But yeah, you should love people for something for more than how they look. That seems like a basic human function.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I guess and if you think of the people you love most in life, you don't care what they look like. You really don't.
SPEAKER_00I'm also a dude, so like not even you per se, but the people my bodies based on how they look or are built.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I think it's important, especially women. It women are competitive with women. It's important to have friends who just love you for who you are. And so I think that was a really good one and something to be grateful for today are the people in your life who make you feel good. Um, the second one is when you get a primo parking spot. And for this one, I'm thinking of like when you're going to a restaurant and you're really hungry, or like you're going to a busy game or something like that, and a spot or a grocery store, and a spot just opens up and it's super clutch, and you get to weave in there.
SPEAKER_00We just had well, not just, but my mom has been awesome. She's offered to watch Laney a couple, I mean, she wants to watch her all the time, but she's offered to take her on Fridays every now and again to give us a date night. And I remember, do you remember when we went to the there's like a restaurant that's pretty local, but M and I I've been to it. M hadn't been there before. Ike's and not the one in downtown, the one that's in the west suburbs, but the parking lot was packed. And like I was gonna do a loop and drop M by the front door, and there was literally a spot that could not have been closer to the front door. And I drive a decent sized truck, so like we stuck it in there, and we were like, dang, this is a primo parking. It made our day.
SPEAKER_01It's the best feeling, especially if it's like shit, crap weather, and it's boring, and you just get that primo spot. So I had to add that because it's a good one. A really good book is number three. Um, obviously, the Bible is probably the best book, but a book Grant and I read is Circle Maker. That book was really good. If you haven't read that, um, I was I've been working on um the book The Nightingale for like two years, and it's it's really good.
SPEAKER_00The Go Giver. The Go Giver is a great book for anybody that's in business or in some sort of a leadership role, or honestly just a human being, go read the Go Giver and act it out. It will help you a lot.
SPEAKER_01I think I might have read, I don't know. It feels if you've told me things from it.
SPEAKER_00I've given her cliff notes.
SPEAKER_01Um, but I know I have avid readers out there, so and drop your books in the show notes because I'm I feel like, and I've talked to Grant many times, we want to get back into reading. So drop your favorite books in the show notes. The next one is remembering something you forgot and couldn't, you know, couldn't say, especially for me. This is like a word when Grant and I are talking, and I'm like, oh, what is the word for? And we're both it, we can't figure it out, and then one of us gets it, and it's just like, oh, it's so satisfying, or like that name of an actor, or the name of a movie, or like anything like that, and then you just think of it, and it's just it's just the simple little thing in life that happens, and it's like our brain cells just reactivate and we realize that it was stored somewhere deep in there, among the many things that we have to remember. Um, I think that's just a very satisfying feeling. The next one is when you're done prepping everything for the next day, and this is especially applicable for people who have to drive somewhere for work. And I used to do this, like what and Grant, my husband does this, but like when you prep your food, you prep your work stuff, you got your outfit laid out, you got your workout stuff ready, everything that you usually prep. And for me, this also applies to having a baby. It's like when I get everything ready for feeding at night and that routine, and it's all set the night before, it's just very satisfying. Cause then you sit down to watch your movie or relax before bed, and everything is ready for the next day. And I just think, especially on a Sunday, that's very applicable for the people who are getting prepped for the next day, or like if you meal prep every week or cook or things like that, um, it's just a very satisfying feeling. So grateful for that. Um, grant, this one's all you because I did not relate to this one, but I'm gonna let him answer this one.
SPEAKER_00Yes. When you walk into a gas station and the perfect snack jumps out at you. Maybe this isn't super applicable for the gals on this, but I know like I'm a road warrior for work. Um, I'm in my truck all the time for personal. You name it, I'm in my vehicle a lot. And like I'm pretty good about packing healthy food and making sure I don't stop. But like sometimes when you just have like a hankering and you don't know what the snack is, and you walk into like quick trip or Casey's and you're like, boom, that's it. Like it is like it reads your mind.
SPEAKER_01It's just I'm not sure how many people that'll touch base with resonate.
SPEAKER_00If it resonates with you, put it in the comments.
SPEAKER_01But also, I think when you walk into a gas station and you really got a pee or go number two, and and you and the bathroom is really nice. And the bathroom is really nice. Well, yeah, that's why we that's the best. Especially my runners out there. We have to go one and two on a run.
SPEAKER_00Quick trip is the best.
SPEAKER_01And you walk in, you're like, this is a nice bathroom, or just you know, the the relief of letting things leave your body. It's very nice. Okay, and we're going on the next one. Finishing your to-do list. I think that's so satisfying. Don't you, Grant?
SPEAKER_00My to-do list is never done.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I mean, come on, let's say abroad to do. Like, if Grant and I have five things we want to get done in a day, and we get them done on the weekend, and we're like, nice.
SPEAKER_00It's nice to get done. It's very well done by like lunch with all of that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And, you know, that's applicable for the work week or your weekend. If you have like you got it's a Sunday, so you always do your laundry, always clean the kitchen, you always when you get done with that and you're like, now I can sit down and rot on the couch, it's the best. Okay, so that's very satisfying feeling. Next one is the stars in the galaxy.
SPEAKER_00Yes, that one is awesome. I know when you get out of the city and you're like in the outskirts. I know M has experienced this at my family farm. Like the stars there are just awesome. And then there's a spot in Montana in the middle of nowhere that I go. And I don't know if it's the combination of higher altitude and no light pollution, but it's like the stars are literally a show every night. So yeah, that is an awesome one.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. And going somewhere where you can see the stars to that level. And if you live in the city, I think you've probably experienced when you're outside the city, just or driving home or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Um would you fit the northern lights in with that?
SPEAKER_01Because remember, yeah, we saw them at our showed up a few more places um than normal. But yeah, I think it's just beautiful and it's reflection of God's art. And um makes me think of aliens and the the d the debate of if they're real or not. And my conclusion, just not to go on a tangent here, is that even if they are real, if you have a faith life, just because just because they're out there doesn't mean that God needed to explain it to us.
SPEAKER_00There might be a reason you didn't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there might be a reason he didn't. It doesn't negate that they're alive. I'm not saying I believe they are, I'm just saying it doesn't scare me at all. Okay. Grant, this one is you're not that's not the conclusion of this episode. Okay, here.
SPEAKER_00When your wife finally picks a movie, this is like the greatest win of all time on the world.
SPEAKER_01It's very difficult. It takes me probably on average an hour. Probably an hour. I'm not proud of it. But that's why it's really good when there's a new one out and it's in the top ten, and we read the bio and it looks good, and I'm like, I know.
SPEAKER_00Then last night we watched one that was like top three on Netflix, and it was one of the truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life.
SPEAKER_01The what was it called?
SPEAKER_00The Requen or Requen?
SPEAKER_01The Requin. The Requin.
SPEAKER_00The Requin about some stupid shark, and it was the acting was very bad.
SPEAKER_01It was like C-rated acting, and we literally ended up well, because Laney was asleep and we needed to go up to try to. We fast forwarded it, and the end of the movie was like we skipped ahead to all the scenes we wanted to see because then But hey, everybody has their own opinion.
SPEAKER_00So if you want to waste an hour and a half of your life, go ahead and saw it already and liked it. Let us know what we missed.
SPEAKER_01Um we did not enjoy that movie, but it was new, and that makes choosing easy. But yes, it is satisfying when you when you finally decide. Um, we have just a few more crazy things in the ocean. Grant this morning went into a spiral on fish.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it went into a wormhole of like stuff that's deep, deep, deep in like past pelagic.
SPEAKER_01There's some pretty cool stuff down there. Those um he was telling me about the fish with the, you know, everyone's seen Nemo, finding Nemo, the fish with the light bulb in the front of the head. That fish, apparently, it's a female, and male fish of that same breed come and bite this fish and become the angler fish and become one with the fish. And the female, the giant one with the light bulb at the front, can have up to like how many attached eight males attached to it at once, and they like merge, and it's disgusting.
SPEAKER_00And then the light, the little light thing has its own bacteria, so it's its own like life form that functions outside of how the fish functions.
SPEAKER_01It's pretty nasty. Like he was like, You gotta watch this video, and it was pretty awesome to watch, but like seeing this giant fish with these other fish sucking and biting into it, and then losing their eyeballs and becoming one, it was like they even lose their organs. The males do, and they it's just it's a lot. Okay, anyway. Um, and also I encourage you to go on a spiral about things that interest you. I tell Grant this all the time because I do it all the time. I just go into deep spirals on things that interest me on Google. Um he's reading me a description. Okay, that's interesting. Um, but yeah, just if you're interested in something, read about it, look it up. Instead of just like asking question, I wonder, da-da-da-da-da.
SPEAKER_00M has Google it. That is one thing I'm grateful for, is M's curiosity because it has definitely rubbed off on me. Like she'll hear something, and most people are just like, oh, that's interesting. I wonder what that's like, and move on. M like stops what she's doing, whips out her phone, starts researching and digs into it, and then that's like 15 minutes later, you're like, holy crap, I just learned about why bowel movements function at the same time every day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, circadian rhythm of rebel. But how fortunate are we that we have that resource? Think about people even 20 years ago, they didn't, they weren't able to just Google things, they had to read them. And we think about how do people who are when jeopardy get so smart? They, whenever they felt curiosity, they would go find the answer, and it wasn't as easy for them to do. They still had to go find the book, go to the resource. Like now we can just Google it.
SPEAKER_00And I would also challenge you don't just use AI and type it in. Like dig in a little bit, and like you can use Google without using the AI function.
SPEAKER_01I use it all the time, but yeah, he's right. Um, AI is scary, but yeah, let your curiosity lead you today. Um, okay, just a couple more. Your go-to local reliable restaurant. Grant and I have a couple phase. We love Maynards, we get takeout there all the time. Um, it's delicious, and also your local cafe. Grant and I love a good coffee from a local spot. Um, encourage you guys to support local business as well.
SPEAKER_00Also, in the comments, can somebody please let us know why places that have good coffee we've noticed that are in kind of like a trendy area, their service sucks. Like what takes 20 minutes to make a coffee, please let me know.
SPEAKER_01Also, the manners of some young adults who work at local calf like coffee chocolate.
SPEAKER_00I get you might not want to be up early, but if you don't want to be doing what you're doing, then please don't take that job because I'm excited to get a coffee.
SPEAKER_01You know what? We're gonna end it on that note. We're gonna do people who work at places that seem happy to be working.
SPEAKER_00Shout out Chick Foy.
SPEAKER_01Yes, because it there's nothing worse than like if you're at a restaurant and you have to call your waiter over again and they act like you inconvenience them for asking for help.
SPEAKER_00Can you tell that this is winding Emily up?
SPEAKER_01Like this is like this bothers me. Or if you go to like a Starbucks and you and you let's say the line is long and you finally get up to the register and the person just looks at you like, ugh, you're such what happened yesterday? Uh I don't remember.
SPEAKER_00I went to Walgreens to get a medication for M that was supposed to be filled two days ago, and the lady was inconvenienced and giving me attitude because I was quizzing her on why a prescription was not ready that he wasn't being mean.
SPEAKER_01I think just the point is people who are who even if it's a hard day for that employee, if they do their best to behave like they're grateful for their job and they're especially if you work in a customer-facing position.
SPEAKER_00I do. You can still have a bad day and treat people with respect because you're getting paid.
SPEAKER_01And at the end of the day, so thank you to all the employees out there, especially customer-facing, who you deal with customers all day. It's a pain in the ass. I worked at an ice cream shop. I get it. It sucks. Yeah, anywhere, it sucks. But if you do a good job, we appreciate you. Thank you. We're grateful for you.
SPEAKER_00And that is I struck a nerve with them. I have one more baby giggles. Okay, like Laney's little baby giggles just makes your day. We'll add that. And with everything that's been going on for baby.
SPEAKER_01If you haven't heard a baby laugh, just look it up on YouTube right now and it'll make you smile. All right. Thanks, guys. We love you. Have a great rest of your Sunday and stay tuned for another one of these next weekend. Bye. Say bye.
