Why Healing Isn't Linear: The Biology of Your Healing Timeline

Hey, hey, and welcome back to the Root Conversations Podcast. I'm your host, Mackenzie Grace, a functional health practitioner, root cause obsessed, and the person who will never let you quit on yourself when you're actually so close to a breakthrough. Today's episode is one I've been wanting to record for a while because it's a conversation that I have with literally almost every single client at some point in her healing journey. And it's the one that changes everything when it finally lands. And so I hope it lands for you today. We're going to be talking about why healing isn't linear. And I don't just mean that in like a motivational poster kind of way. I mean like the actual biology of healing and what is happening inside of your cells, your nervous system, your hormones, all of it that makes healing feels like it's two steps forward and then one step back because sometimes it can also be three steps sideways, and then suddenly you leap forward and you didn't even see that coming. So if you've ever started a protocol, changed your diets, added supplements, and then felt worse, this episode is for you because that experience, that confusion, demoralizing, what the heck is happening experience might be the most misunderstood moment in all of healing. So today we're gonna talk about that the way that you respond is going to determine how everything goes. Let's get into it. Okay. I want you to raise your hand. And I know you might be driving or doing dishes, so just like raise it in your mind, but raise your hand if there has this has ever happened to you. You start something new, a new protocol, elimination diet, a supplement stack, your practitioner recommended, and then for the first few days, maybe even the first week or two, you feel actually okay, maybe even optimistic. And then it hits the fatigue, the headaches, the bloating, the things that make it seem worse than what it was before, the brain fog so thick that you feel like you can't even finish a sentence. Maybe even a skin breakout, maybe your sleep goes sideways, and then the voice in your head gets really loud. Why am I feeling worse? This isn't working. I should just quit. That moment right there, that is the most expensive mistake that you can make in healing. Not because quitting is weak, but because that moment, that hard, confusing, uncomfortable moment, is often the moment that the protocol is working the hardest. And nobody's told you that. So you've likely just stopped. You felt that things got worse. So you thought, okay, I shouldn't continue in this direction. And today I want to walk you through that feeling so it make you make we make sure that it never happens to you again. You need to know what your body is actually doing. The core thing I need you to understand is that most of us have been conditioned to think that healing is a straight line. Like every day, a little bit better, progress equals feeling good, and regression equals feeling bad. But that's not actually how your body works. And that is a misunderstanding. That is the number one reason that so many women quit when they're actually the closest to a healing breakthrough. So I want to walk you through what is actually happening at a cellular level so that when you start a healing protocol, there are four things that you see that are going on simultaneously, and when you understand them, you can notice those shifts and be able to move through the healing progress. So, number one, inflammation being stirred up, not created. So your body has been storing chronic low-grade inflammation probably months, maybe years. And I want you to kind of picture this like it's a pond. So there's sediment sitting at the bottom of this pond, and all that old stuff on the bottom has been accumulating. And so when you start a protocol, you're stirring up the sediment. So if you imagine that pond and you go into the pond and you stir the bottom of it, the water is gonna get really cloudy, but then it starts to clear. And that cloudiness in your body is inflammation moving out, not moving in. So you didn't create new problems, you actually just mobilized the old ones, and that's a completely different thing. Number two, your nervous system is gonna be recalibrating. So if you've been in a chronic stress state, and most of my clients have, even if they don't identify as being stressed, then your nervous system has adapted to that. So think of it like a car alarm that's been blaring for so long, nobody notices anymore because it's just that background noise. So when you finally start addressing root causes, the nervous system has to relearn what safe actually feels like. And that transition in itself is actually incredibly uncomfortable. Fatigue, irritability, mood dips, disrupted sleep, everything in the early stages of a protocol that get pretty much brought to the surface. These are the often the nervous system resetting, not getting worse, but resetting. Number three, we have cellular turnover. This is where timelines become so important because your cells are literally dying and being replaced on a regular schedule. So we have red blood cells and they turn over every 90 to 120 days. Our gut lining cells turn over every three to five days, liver cells take months, and bone cells take years. This is why a two-week detox will never fix a five-year-long problem. Healing actually happens in layers across cells, generations. So if you're not seeing dramatic changes in just one month, it doesn't mean that nothing is happening. It just means that your body is working through a biological timeline that does not care about your patients or mine for that matter. So it's important to understand the timeline that healing actually takes. And number four, we have a detox pathways. Um, they are which the body is naturally getting rid of toxins in the body. And what happens is your detox pathways are under temporary overload. So your kidney, your liver, your lymphatic system are your body's waste management. And during a protocol, more waste is being generated than usual. Dead pathogens, mobilizing those toxins, going back to the sediment in the pot example, inflammatory byproducts, all of these are happening inside. And so if your drainage pathways aren't fully open and supported, then that waste backs up. That will feel like headaches, skin breakouts, brain fog, fatigue, and these are all signs that your detox origins or organs are working hard but struggling to keep up. And so this is not a sign to stop, but a sign to support drainage, which is a big difference. Now, I want to address something that comes up consistently: the difference between a healing reaction and actually backsliding. Because yes, sometimes a flare is just a healing reaction, and sometimes it's a sign that something isn't right in your protocol. Knowing the difference is one of the most important clinical skills and functional health, and it's something I want you to start developing for yourself, even if you are working with a coach or considering working with a coach. So, three questions that I ask a client whenever they feel like they're feeling worse is number one, is anything feeling better even slightly? Not everything, just literally one thing. Is your energy a little bit more stable in the morning? Is your bloating a six instead of a nine? Did you sleep throughout the night once this week when you never used to? If you answered yes to any of these things or anything like somewhere something is better, then the protocol is actually working and you're just in the medial messy mess, you're just in the messy middle of it, but you're moving in the right direction. Question number two is when did it start and what changed? So if symptoms appeared right after a protocol change, so a new supplement, a dietary shift, increased dosage, that's a reaction to the change. That's information, it's not random, it's just information. Question number three: what is the trend actually over the last three to four weeks, not just how you're feeling today? This is a big one. I always tell my clients that we measure the tide, not the waves. So any given day can be rough, any given week can be hard, but what is the direction of travel over the last 30, 60, 90 days? Because that is where your real data lives. So we've just covered what happens at a cellular level. Now let's talk about why healing moves in waves, because there are three specific patterns I see over and over again. And when you understand them, a hard week will stop feeling like failure and start feeling like information. So wave pattern number one, stress layering. Even when a protocol is working beautifully, external stressors will temporarily spike inflammation and tank your symptoms. A brutal work week, a few nights of bad sleep, an emotional hit, a weekend of eating off plan, these are all information that tells us that the protocol is not failing, but your body is showing you that it still has a lower stress hold than it eventually will. So the thing to understand about this is that the threshold goes up over time as you heal, but a bad week that you've had is just data and it's not a verdict that this isn't working for you. Wave pattern number two is hormone cycling. So for all of my women that are listening, and that's, you know, probably 95% of you, your symptoms will track also with your cycle. So sometimes for the worst, before they get better. Estrogen and progesterone patterns shift during healing. You might have cycles that feel a little bit harder to regulate. Your luteal phase is especially notorious for this. It can feel like regression, but it is not regression. It's your body recalibrating. The hormone pattern your body has been running on for years is being disrupted. So it takes a few cycles to find a new normal. And I want you to be patient with yourself, patient with your luteal phase because she is doing the most for us, okay? And then wave number three is adaptive physiology. Your metabolism and immune system are adaptive by design. And when you make a change to your diets, your supplements, and your lifestyle, the body has to adapt to it. Sometimes that can look like a plateau, it can look like things are seeming to stall, or symptoms that were improving seem to level off. And this is your body integrating the previous layer of healing before it can go even deeper. And I always compare it to a load heavy program on an old loading out heavy program on an old computer. You know how it freezes for a second, but then it keeps going? That's just the processing, and that's what your body is doing. So the last piece I want to talk to you here today is I want to linger here for a second because this is a piece that gets skipped in almost every other functional health coaching program. And I think it's the piece that matters the most. And it's this you can have a perfect protocol, you can run the right labs, take the right supplements, have the right food, have the right timing, and your body will still resist healing if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode. And when the body is under that chronic stress state, when you are not prioritizing the fundamentals in regards to the relationships that you have in your life, the way that you talk to yourself, the environment that you're living in, those are all things that can put your body into survival mode and in that chronic stress state. And when you're chronically stressed and feeling like you're running in fight or flight all the time, your body actually deprioritizes non-essential functions. And from a survival standpoint, deep cellular repair, hormone regulation are non-essential to survival. So your body is not going to repair when you're in the stuck spot. Your body is trying to outrun the tiger first and it will fix your hormones later. And this is why our dress framework that we use inside of our one-to-one coaching program is working as a system and not a checklist. Each one of the five pillars is collectively sending a message to your nervous system that this is safe and it's safe to invest resources into healing. So when all five are in place, your diet, your rest, your exercise, your stress reduction, your supplementation, your biology will move faster. But when one of them is chronically missing, especially when we talk about stress reduction and rest, then your results and your protocol slow down. And this isn't because the protocol isn't working, but because the nervous system isn't prioritizing it. So safety is a prerequisite to healing 100%. Now, to leave you with this and something to think about, and one of the most important minds in this whole journey is that progress in healing is not measured by how you feel today. It's actually measured by the trend across 30, 60, 90 days and by how many things that no longer bother you that really used to. So practice that I give all of my clients is not just to track your symptoms, but track your absences. What did not happen this week that used to? Did your afternoon crash disappear so gradually that you even forgot you used to crash in the afternoon? Does your stomach not hurt after dinner anymore? And you only notice it because something else flared and there was suddenly a contrast there? The flare is loud, always. We always are focusing on what's not going right. But you have to look for the winds because the winds are quiet. And part of my job as a coach is by pointing out the quiet winds when you can't see them. And today's episode was pointing them out for you so that you could start noticing them for yourself as well. And you can also start to notice that you're making progress and not abandoning yourself when you're actually making that progress. So next time you are in a hard week, a hard day, I want you to ask yourself, what has gotten actually better that I forgot was even a problem for me? Because that answer is your data. Okay, that's why healing isn't linear. That's the episode. More importantly, I want you to really start paying attention so you stop abandoning yourself the moment that you're actually making progress. And to recrap everything really quick quickly, healing happens in waves because of cellular biology, nervous system recalibration, hormone cycling, and adaptive physiology. A rough patch is often inflammation moving out, detox pathways catching up, or your body integrating a new layer of healing before it can go deeper. Measure your trends, not the day, track your absences, not just the symptoms, and above all, your symptoms are signals. So a flare is your body speaking, but the goal is to learn the language and not to silence it.
