How you think affects how you feel, which affects your biochemistry. Practicing shifting out of the patterns of thoughts and feelings that cause you to feel bad can really help minimize that downward spiral.

This is the Meditation Minis podcast with your host, hypnotist Chel Hamilton.

Close your eyes, take three deep breaths with a little sigh, and just allow the sound of my voice to make any effort at all that it takes. And if there's a voice in your mind that is telling you this won't work for you, and oh gosh, I forgot to pay attention, don't worry about it. That's your conscious mind. And it has nothing to do with this process of dipping down into your subconscious by using meditative trance. As you just breathe and be, maybe even turning your attention to the feeling of the air at the edges of your nose and allowing that, paying attention to that present moment subtle sensation to relax you just a little bit more. And I wonder if you've ever spent some time sitting by a window looking out at a soft rain. And just imagine that in your mind, sitting there and you're looking out the window, and maybe it's springtime and everything is this glorious new green. And it's raining, gentle but steady. And you can hear the rain on the roof, perhaps, and it hits the window from time to time, and it's just this beautiful drizzle, and yes, the sky may be gray, but the trees and the grass are so very green. And that beautiful soft rain continues to fall. And what would it be like if all of those depressed thoughts that you have were just like that rain? And you can stand out in the rain and get wet, or you can be inside and dry, or you can even be inside watching the rain and being angry that the rain had to happen at all. But then you realize that there are some very happy ducks out there, and the grass is getting greener and growing, and the trees and the flowers are appreciating this rain, and you can just stay inside and look at it through the window, safe and dry. Imagine what it would be like if those feelings that make you feel sad or lonely or depressed, if you could just set them outside and let them be the rain, no longer needing to take them personally. And you're inside and you're dry and you're safe and you're just watching the rain, finding it interesting that those things used to bother you. Now they just seem not so much a part of you. Isn't that interesting? You might even imagine yourself getting up and let the rain be outside, and maybe you decide to just clear off that dresser top. Or the coffee table. Or even just to go into the kitchen and wash one cup or take a shower, perhaps. To get up to do just one little thing. Because one little thing may turn into two, which may turn into three, and before you realize it, you're out and the sun is shining and you're feeling better, even if it's just to sit at a coffee shop and watch the world walk by. Enjoying being just inside that flow, a little more of life. The bad feelings, the things that are making you feel sad or lonely or upset or depressed, but to just step back and let them be the rain outside the window, no longer needing to take them personally and thinking of those ducks that are quite happy, shaking the water off as they shake their little tail feathers and quack, quack, and waddle along.
