You Are the Answer
What Is Self-Empowerment And How Will It REALLY Change My Life?

Fear may be loud, but your body’s wisdom is louder when you learn how to listen. We explore how nervous system regulation becomes the core of real self‑empowerment—shifting you from constant fight‑or‑flight into the parasympathetic state where you sleep better, digest well, think clearly, and make decisions you can trust. I share why “stretch don’t break” is the golden rule for resilience, and how safe, guided challenges like cold exposure, firewalking, or a trust fall can rapidly rewire your stress response and expand your window of tolerance.
Together we break down the practice of becoming the watcher: noticing thoughts as signals rather than truth, creating space to respond instead of react. You’ll hear why conventional self‑care often misses the point, and how to turn regulation into a daily skill—micro‑check‑ins, breath pacing, posture resets, and clear boundaries that protect energy and focus. We talk about the felt difference between choices driven by fear and scarcity and choices rooted in purpose and abundance, and how that somatic cue can guide your work, relationships, and health.
I also share two practical tools to help you build momentum: a 31‑day nervous system reset journal and a forthcoming oracle‑style deck that delivers embodied prompts, quotes, and one small action for alignment each day. The aim is simple and powerful: train your system to recognise ease, choose it more often, and create a life that feels like you from the inside out. If this conversation helps you reclaim calm and clarity, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who needs a reminder that they are not broken—they are the answer.

Nervous System Regulation Benefits
Naomi MillsHello and welcome to episode 14 of the You Are the Answer Podcast. I am so delighted that you are here interested in getting to understand your central nervous system and how it directly relates to your life and your health. Long story short, if you can get your nervous system to be regulated, i.e. running in this parasympathetic or healing state, where you sleep, where you digest, where you balance your hormones, where your body repairs on a cell level, you are going to have a very different experience, not just physically and in terms of your health, but also mentally, in terms of more mental clarity, being able to have better focus, concentration, take on new information.
What Self‑Empowerment Really Means
Naomi MillsI talk to a lot of my clients about increasing your capacity for stress. And when we do that, we actually leave ourselves space for creativity, connection, love, and joy. So again, getting really deep into this nervous system work is how you are going to create a much better quality of life for yourself and for the people that you love, the people that are around you. For me, the way I can help you to do that is to share all of my clinical experience over the last 20 years of working in healthcare and more recently working in self-empowerment.
Naomi MillsAnd that's really the topic I want to have a wee chat about today. Because what does self-empowerment even mean? For me personally, empowering you through this podcast, through the information I share, and for the people I get to share in-person experiences with, that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm empowering you with information to make your own life better. But self-empowerment is a term that gets thrown around like self-care, and it can mean all kinds of things to all kinds of people.
Naomi MillsBut essentially, when I talk about self-empowerment, it's what begins the moment you decide to trust your body more than you trust your fear. And if you want to go into that in more depth, you should listen to the last episode that was talking about walking on broken glass and how you can use something like that as a means to release fear and increase trust in yourself. It's also true with our breathwork episode, our firewalking episode. This whole embodiment arc is me doing my best to compel you to do something that's a bit out of your normal zone. I love that more and more people are using journaling, meditation, yoga, mindfulness to become more embodied, more regulated, and therefore healthier physically and mentally.
Controlled Danger As Embodiment
Naomi MillsHowever, I feel the amount of distrust that we are experiencing with each other, with ourselves on a cultural level, particularly at the moment, but it is always true. It's a perception that's been held for many, many years for lots of different reasons. Actually, putting yourself outside of your comfort zone in what we call a controlled dangerous environment where there is that genuine element of fear that you get before you step on burning hot coals, or you place an arrow to your throat, or you take a step on broken glass, or you allow yourself to fall backwards, like when we do a trust fall, those are the moments that shift you on a cell level.
Naomi MillsBecause when you are meditating, say, or journaling, or going to your lovely class, you don't really feel like you're in any real physiological danger. So you're not allowing yourself the opportunity to experience that really in your body and mind, and then successfully overcoming it. So there is great power in that. And that's what self-empowerment is for me, these exercises that very specifically create a feeling or an element of fear because that allows you to overcome it and learn something, to change your narrative in that moment. And that's because self-empowerment is choosing to respond instead of react, even when your nervous system is really loud. So one of the greatest gifts or tools you will ever pick up in this lifetime is your ability. I call it becoming the watcher.
Naomi MillsIt's noticing your thoughts in real time, as thoughts, as observations, but not necessarily true. So if we look back over the first few episodes of this arc, episodes 10, 11, 12, and 13, we've been talking about interventions where your brain and your body are going to be loudly saying, I don't know about this. And it's about developing that part of yourself. It's like, yeah, I know. But I also trust the evidence, I trust the experience of the person holding this event, I trust that I can also come through this, and the only way to know is going to be actually going through it. And where your real strength lives is releasing this idea for something to be perfect or in a certain way, but starting to kind of love, as I now do, putting myself in those uncomfortable situations and stretching my boundaries.
Become The Watcher
Naomi MillsAnd here's a really important point that you can apply in all aspects of your life and not just in the self-improvement or self-empowerment area. It's also very true of all parts of our nervous system. It's true for our children that what we want to do in life is experience this stretch, this challenging of the system. Cold water swimming can be a great example of this. It's so good for us physiologically because it stretches our boundaries of temperature. Getting really, really hot or getting really, really cold stretches the boundary, makes the body more resilient. There are physiological processes that then happen as a result. But get too cold, you're hypothermic, you're in danger of dying.
Naomi MillsGet too hot, you can kill yourself the opposite way. So we are always looking to stretch but not break. So self-empowerment comes with learning to enjoy that stretch that's going to create resilience, but never push us beyond our boundaries. And self-empowerment is, of course, giving yourself permission to take up space, to make time for yourself. It often comes with boundary settings and honoring our own needs. And I know self-care is such a big topic these days, but we miss the purpose. Self-care isn't just having a bath and reading a book, although, you know, that's great to do. What's the purpose behind looking after yourself? And fundamentally, to me, in this work that we're always talking about is it's to keep yourself healthy, it's to keep yourself sane, it's to keep yourself alive and not simply surviving. So when I think about self-care, I think about moment-to-moment nervous system regulation. And so it can be simply bringing awareness to the body in that moment, simply bringing awareness to what my thoughts are doing.
Stretch Don’t Break: Resilience
Naomi MillsIt's about something that happens consistently all day, every day, because you're developing those tools rather than a particular activity that you might get around to doing because you want to look after yourself. True self-care, true regulation, true self-empowerment is an ongoing, never-ending process throughout your days. And some of these more challenging experiences can be a really nice fast track to changing the level at which you are working with your nervous system. Because ultimately it is that quiet, consistent choice to create a life that feels like you from the inside out. And so little spoiler alert here, but also very exciting teaser. On the back of creating my 31-day nervous system reset journal that people have been gifted in my practice and bought online via the You Are the Answer shop.
Naomi MillsI began to realize from that feedback just how important it is to give you as many ways as possible to start listening to your body's signals, noticing them, trusting them, and responding. So I have been developing and I'm currently creating my own set of nervous systems, almost like oracle cards, a deck of cards that each day you can randomly pull one out and it will talk about this subject. It will give you an embodied exercise to do for that day and a quote and some food for thought. And it becomes about how your body feels when you make an action or decision that's really in alignment with you. It's training yourself all day, every day to make the action, whether that's a physical action or an emotional mental decision, that brings your nervous system into ease, that lets your body feel relaxed, that releases tension from your muscles, that gives you that feeling rather than that pushing through. And so when you think about self-empowerment now, I no longer want you to think that it's something fatty, that it's unnecessary, or it's frivolous, or it's a treat, or it's something that other people do. Remember it's about you learning to trust your body more than you trust your chattering chimp in your mind.
Redefining Self‑Care As Regulation
Naomi MillsIt gives you the space to respond instead of react, which is incredibly powerful, especially in high-pressured situations or at work or in the family. You being able to pause, check in, and take that breath before responding can create an entirely different outcome. It's about releasing perfectionism and learning to lean into the discomfort. It teaches us to make ourselves a priority, often causing you to then set a boundary and honor your own needs first. And realizing that it's a quiet, consistent choice that happens all day, every day. It's not a one-off here or there or when we have time. It's consistently creating your life with your insides as the marker. And in the first few episodes, I did share my own personal story where I was living and working in this fight flight, even though it was a quote successful life. My insides were pretty dramatic. And I was stressed, and my body was expressing that through my sleep, through my digestion, my mood was expressing that.
Tools: Journal And Oracle Deck
Naomi MillsEverything was showing that even though what I was creating was quote, good or fun, it was also not in alignment with my true values. And when you get more into that space, you realize all of this work just layers on top of each other, but it all comes back down to how the life you live and create can either regulate or dysregulate your nervous system. And whether it, whichever way it's coming from, creates a completely different outcome. And it reminds me of a wonderful psychotherapist that I've worked with for many, many years. And I really love her because, on top of all her great education that she would share about her psychotherapy, and she's extremely knowledgeable, she also understood that a lot of this work was embodied and you couldn't separate what she was talking her clients through emotionally with also not acknowledging how they were feeling in their bodies. And she said to me once, when we were talking about my work and how I wanted to move forward, she said, you need to learn that instead of moving forward from fear and lack, wanting security, whether that was wanting a particular income or a particular quality of life, but it was all about chasing something. She said, But the difference is when you're being driven by purpose, by love, by abundance, that will feel completely different emotionally and physically. And she was absolutely right.
Naomi MillsSo your invitation today is to reframe how you look at self-empowerment and self-care and start to make the commitment to yourself to see how you can quietly and consciously start regulating your own nervous system as your number one priority in everything that you do. And what might that look like? How would that change how you experience life? And do you think you are deriving from strain, from stress, from fear? Or are you striving forward from abundance and certainty and groundedness? I really hope it's the latter.
Purpose Over Fear
Naomi MillsOf course, we're never always in that state. But if there's any more information or help or questions you have around this that could possibly be covered in a podcast that will help you, ask the questions, leave comments below, and I will be delighted to pick that up for you. So until next time, have a wonderful day.
