From Meth To Ministry Through A Jail Cell
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Rock bottom doesn’t always look like one bad decision. Sometimes it looks like years of grief you never processed, one more loss you can’t explain, and the slow drift into coping habits that finally take over. We sit down with Brandy, a fitness instructor and woman of faith, as she tells the full story: losing her brother in a tragic wreck, losing the man she loved in a motorcycle accident, and the spiral that led to meth addiction, isolation, and living in a storage unit while trying to hold life together.
Brandy speaks with raw honesty about abandonment, a suicide attempt, and the “darkness” she felt while using, including the paranoia and loneliness that come when addiction becomes your whole world. Then the turning point hits: arrest, jail, and a decision to stop fighting for control and start surrendering. We talk about reading the Bible for the first time, late-night prayer, finding peace in a concrete cell, and the moments she experienced as God’s presence, including the dandelion seeds that became a personal reminder of hope.
Her testimony doesn’t stop at survival. We dig into what happens after release: rebuilding trust, getting baptized with her mom, finding community again, and stepping into a new purpose through wellness and personal training. We also talk about facing her son’s cancer with a different kind of strength, choosing prayer first instead of panic. If you’re searching for a faith-based recovery story, Christian hope after addiction, or proof that transformation can be real and lasting, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the moment that stayed with you.

Key Scriptures
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.” Psalm 40:1–3
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” Isaiah 61:1–3
Reflection questions
Key Takeaway
- Are there parts of your past you believe God could never redeem?
- Have you been trying to overcome sin in your own strength instead of surrendering it to Christ?
- Is there someone in your life you've stopped believing God can rescue?
- What "jail cell" are you sitting in today—addiction, shame, fear, bitterness, or guilt?
- How could your greatest failure eventually become your greatest testimony?
- What step of obedience is God asking you to take today?
God doesn't waste brokenness. Your worst decisions, deepest failures, and darkest seasons do not have the final word. When surrendered to Jesus, even addiction, prison, and shame can become the very testimony God uses to lead others toward hope. No one is too far gone for the grace of God.

Welcome And Why Chaos Matters
SPEAKER_04Welcome to Kingdom Chaos, a podcast for anyone trying to live a purpose and faith-filled life in a loud and messy world. Jesus said his kingdom in the story. Yet here we are navigating real life and real struggles. I'm not a guru, just someone learning that God's grace meets us even in the chaos. This is Kingdom Chaos, where faith meets real life, and purpose is still found in the mess.
Meet Brandy And Her Story
SPEAKER_04Hey everybody, welcome back to King Chaos. My name is Troy, and I have two special guests today. Amy is here with me, my wife. How are you doing, Amy?
SPEAKER_03Hey, what's up, guys?
SPEAKER_04Okay, well, and then we also have uh Brandy here with us who's gonna tell our testimony. How are you doing, Brandy?
SPEAKER_00I'm doing wonderful.
SPEAKER_04Fantastic. So I don't want to waste too much time because I know this could be a fairly long podcast if we allow it to be. So uh first, before we get started, can you go ahead and let everybody know who you are today? If somebody walked up to you, who is Brandy?
SPEAKER_00I am a woman of God. I am a woman of God. Um uh let's see, I have a 23-year-old who is my pride and joy, still my baby, even though he's grown. Um I um have a boyfriend who's a wonderful boyfriend. Let's see, I am a fitness instructor. So not only do I personal train like individuals, I personal train 36 people in one class. So um definitely a very um rewarding job. Yeah, I love my job. That's great. I actually get up and go to work and I love it. So uh, and I get up at 3:30 in the morning. It takes you have to love your job to get up that early. But yes.
SPEAKER_04So, what do you what do you love about it? What's the most rewarding part?
SPEAKER_00Um, watching the transformations. Um, people who don't think they can do things. And, you know, I tell them give it two weeks, two weeks, and you'll be moving totally different than you did before. Or people who are afraid to come into the gym because they they don't have the movement patterns, or they don't they're you know, they don't feel strong enough, and then all of a sudden they're coming every day and they're dropping weight and they're getting stronger, especially older people in their movements. Like it's that's what I love about it. That's all PRs, personal PRs, personal records. That's fantastic. Yeah, getting those records. That's good.
SPEAKER_04That's good. All right, so um, so we know a little bit about you today, uh, a woman of God.
Faith Roots And Brother’s Death
SPEAKER_04So let's go back to the past. So, what uh your childhood did you have any kind of spiritual influence in your life, parents, anything? Did you go to church?
SPEAKER_00So uh when I was little, yes. Um, and I was, you know, before I can remember maybe like going to like Bible study, Bible school, things like that. Um, my grandfather, my mom, they're Christians, but my mother and father were not like uh practicing. So they didn't go to church every day. Um uh and as far as my childhood, I don't really remember my childhood much. Why? I have no idea. I've got the worst memory when it comes to things. So I don't remember a lot of my childhood, but um definitely knew about God um and believed in a God, I guess is the best, you know, best way I could say it. Um, but actually to live it didn't come until later to fully surrender. So and I had to go through some dark times. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, let's talk about that. Let's what when you say dark times, what's the first thing that you remember um that real tragedy in your life you had to walk through?
SPEAKER_00Let's see. So losing my brother, I think that was a big one. So my family growing up, it was four of us, and we were super close family. Um, dinner was cooked at the, you know, after school. We all sat down together and ate dinner together. Um, very, very great childhood. I had wonderful parents. Um, you know, B A B plus student, you know, didn't get into trouble, didn't even like missing school. And then um when my brother passed away, I think it just destroyed our family. It was really tough on because my mom was really close to my brother.
SPEAKER_04So how old was he?
SPEAKER_00He was 24 when he passed. And um, and so that was like my first big loss. And then it comes, you know, a little bit of the drinking. I was at that age where I was going to clubs and partying, and so I did a little bit of clubbing, a little bit of partying, a little drugs. I mean, not drugs, uh drinking. As far as drugs being introduced into my life, it was a little. Like I tried a few things, but it wasn't anything that was major.
SPEAKER_04How old were you when your brother passed?
SPEAKER_00I was 21 or 20 when he passed away, right before I had 21.
SPEAKER_04Right. So I was and that kind of started the party phase. I mean, that kind of yeah, yeah, along with the whole family kind of everybody kind of just grieving their own way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, and especially my parents, like, you know, they were grieving. My mom really had a hard time with it.
SPEAKER_04So I think it how did he pass?
SPEAKER_00He passed away. It was uh so my brother and my cousin came down to visit to visit the family, and they went out one night. My brother never went clubbing, he was that stay-at-home person, and he did drink. Um, they went out one night, and um he they ended up were drinking, and my cousin, I don't know if he's 6'10 and 45. There's a bridge that goes right underneath 45. Um, my cousin was going too fast, 120, and went off the bridge. And it split the car in half. Um, killed all of them. My brother, his friend. That was the big one. And at that time, I mean, of course I believed, but I didn't really lean on God for things like that. So let's see, after that, I had I got pregnant and had like the best things ever happened to me. My pumpkin. Um, so I got pregnant and pretty much stopped drinking, stopped doing like, you know, like the little that I did try the drugs I did. I never got really into the drugs, right? And then as Mason got a little bit older, maybe elementary, I kind of, you know, started drinking a little bit more again.
SPEAKER_04Um did anything start that up in your life, or did it just happen?
SPEAKER_00I th the person I was with was he drank a lot. And I so I think it just became like social and it was a social thing. And then when we split up, I kind of just went, I didn't drink anymore. But in that being said, I met
Motorcycle Loss And Sliding Into Drugs
SPEAKER_00somebody else. I split up from his dad, met somebody else, and this guy was like the love of my life. I was so head over heels for him, and he ended up passing away. So his was a motorcycle accident, and that one took me down. That one I couldn't deal with because we were living together. Mason adored him. It was like to me the beginning of the perfect, a perfect start of a normal relationship, right? Yeah, I just I I started doing things I shouldn't be doing, pretty much. Yeah, so the drugs, that's when I kind of dipped into the drugs a little bit. So it started off with bass holts, believe it or not. And that is only because it was legal and I could get away with it, and it kind of numbed the pain and it kind of gave me that feel-good feeling, right? I think we all like I think a lot of drug addicts search for that to try to get away from any kind of like trauma that they have during that time, right? Um, I guess I kind of uh would dabble, I did a little bit of it, and then I would stop, and then I would do it, and then I would stop. So it was kind of what you would say, like a functioning addict, right? It wasn't something that like really took a hold of me. Yeah, I moved back home, which was just kind of a change to move back home. Then I met another person, my ex, my ex, and then we started dating, and he was a recovered addict for nine years. He was away from the drugs, and I think I know I brought that back into his life, right? It's one of my one of my biggest regrets, right? That I actually introduced introduced it back into his life. Yeah. So that relationship obviously didn't work because we were both using as much as we tried, it just would not work. He was a strong man of faith, and he's the one who got me to start going to the Woodlands Church. So, yeah, so he's the one that kind of like really kick started my faith again, right? And then we split. So during so during that time, I had at this point I've already developed this like abandonment issues, right? People like dying on me, people picking up and leaving me.
SPEAKER_04And um how long before uh between your brother and Dana?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, it was maybe maybe 10 years, something like that, maybe longer than 10 years.
SPEAKER_04How were you uh had you already uh forgive me, moved on? Like have you ever had you already recovered from from your brother, or were you still carrying hurt in shit?
SPEAKER_00I'm sure I'm always gonna carry a little bit of hurt. Right. Um but no, I I think that I was I kind of You're pretty good.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I was okay, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I think I was I think I was okay and I kind of dealt with it, right? And then when that happened, it was just another blow because it's not like somebody getting sick. Somebody gets sick, which I've had both happen. I think somebody getting sick is worse. And I used to always ask myself, is it would it be harder to not be able to say goodbye or be able to say goodbye and watch them suffer? And definitely I would say not say goodbye. Yeah. Right. So that blow of somebody just picking it, like that, just being gone. You no longer have them. I developed like some abandonment issues. True. Right. You know, the second guy that I told you that brought me to Woodlands Church was another incident. So we started to try to change our lives. So recovered, he went to rehab and um was recovering and got right back into it. It just got a hold of us. When that happened, he picked up and left. And then that's when I had another abandonment issue and I couldn't deal with it. I just felt like at that point, everything was I could I kept messing up.
Suicide Attempt To Total Isolation
SPEAKER_00No matter what I did, I could not do anything right. And that's when I ended up trying, I failed to kill myself.
SPEAKER_04What can you go into more detail on that? What happened?
SPEAKER_00Um, I had just snapped. Um, it wasn't something that I had planned. Like a lot of people who try to kill themselves, they plan it. Just spur the moment. Like I can't do it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I really honestly felt like I was, you know, destroying my son's life and him watching me, seeing me do things that I shouldn't be doing, right? Ended up and, you know, did the cutting thing. Yeah, ended up in a middle institute for about, you know, for a little while. And then got out and was like, okay, I'm done, I'm done, I'm not gonna do this no more. As much as you try on your own, you cannot do it on your own. You just cannot do it. And so I went right back to it. This is when it really started getting bad, right? Um, was in a new home, was abandoned again. He came back to me, left me again, and so I'm stuck with all the bills, didn't know how I was gonna do it. At this point, is when I started selling. So I was selling drugs. Not only was I selling drugs, but I was doing it more so. And um, at this time it was methamphetamine. And man, so it started off smoking it and then it went to the worst, which is the IV user. When I tell you, it's a whole nother world when you do it that way. Yeah, it's like instant darkness, like you can feel the presence of the devil, like it in like you feel it. As crazy as it sounds, like, why do you do it? For one, my dad was sick, yeah. Uh, he was dying of cancer. You know, the reason why I started selling was I didn't want to go back home. You know, I didn't want I didn't want my dad to see me fail again. Yeah, you know, so while he's dying of cancer, I did everything I could to keep this house, and it was like a you know, I was spending four thousand dollars a month on this house and couldn't couldn't afford it. Selling drugs to make make ends meet.
SPEAKER_04So whenever whenever you were using and you talk about man, you could feel the devil's presence. Yeah. And looking back, you can say that, but in the moment, could you? Oh yeah. Yeah. But you still are like, no, I just I gotta escape. I gotta get out of this.
SPEAKER_00So with Ivy, with a with an Ivy user, like the initial rush of doing the drug is one of the best feelings, right? It just comes in and you just it's a good feeling, right? It's all of a sudden. But then after that, once that good feeling, that warmness all over goes away, then that's where the psychological part comes in. It's it's a it plays with your mind. I mean multiple times you could hear noises, you can hear people, you you start to think things that aren't there. And in reality, looking back now, I think they were there. Yeah, I do think it was not just in my head, I believe it was the devil.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_00And it's crazy. Why do you do it, right? I think it just becomes an addiction. You enjoy the the first initial high. And then so when my dad was dying, he finally passed, and um, at this point was losing my home. And I had people around me that were probably not the greatest influences around me. My son had gone to my mom's, and I had people who were stealing, you know, they would steal from me, lie to me, you know, uh gaslight me. Even though I was doing the drug, right, I still had some like good character, right? So I would take people in. I see people on the, you know, that friends that didn't have homes because they were addicts. I would bring them into my home and then think that they were going to be good. Right. And it's not, it never turned out good, right? So ended up losing my home. I couldn't, I couldn't afford it. And then the guy I was seeing at the time was stealing things and doing drugs. He was pretty bad into it. Uh, he went to jail. They ended up they didn't catching him doing something he wasn't supposed to do. So he goes to jail, and when he went to jail, my idea was to get rid of the drugs that I had. And um, so I got in my car and I was gonna go throw it away. And in the meantime, when I did, I got in trouble. So I got arrested. So I ended up getting in trouble, went to jail, got a PR bond, got out. Ended up, instead of going home, because you know, I didn't want to bring drugs home to my son or my mom. I wanted to keep them away from it. And especially with my mom just losing her husband, I thought, hey, you know what, I can I can hide this from her. Um, in the same sense, I could hide it from her and deal with it my own way. So believe it or not, I lived in a storage. And it got to the point where it was so bad that I couldn't be around people anymore. I absolutely hated people because everybody that was around me, besides my mom and my son, were trying, in my mind, trying to get me, and a lot of them were. They were either trying to steal from me. I had an ex who would move furniture around and try to like play games on me to make me feel like there were people in my my storage. Like it was that bad. So I got to the point where I would isolate myself and I would go days never being around anybody. Um, and you talk about a loneliness and a darkness because we're not built for that. We're not made to be by ourselves, you know.
SPEAKER_04And so were you still using at this time?
SPEAKER_00Or this is when it got really bad. This was probably at my worst. The devil knew he had me. Yeah, he had me right where he wanted, he had me isolated, not helping other people, which was we're supposed to do, right? That's our purpose in life. But I remember asking God, you gotta help me, help me. And because I believed in a God, but I didn't live that life, right? He did just that. He definitely put me in time out. Okay. So, but at the time it was it was horrible.
SPEAKER_04So you prayed for something he gave it to you. It wasn't exactly what you might have wanted. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
SPEAKER_04What was it? What happened?
SPEAKER_00I was arrested again. So, how long did you live in the storage? Oh my gosh, I lived in the storage for several years.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it's just a it's a proper, like, climate-controlled roll up the door front. Like, okay, gotcha.
SPEAKER_00So the front part, the front part had an office. At first, my first uh storage was just a regular storage, right? And I would go in there and I would sleep at night, and then they caught me sleeping in there, so they kicked me out. Yeah. So I found one that had an office and then a big bay door, and I could do like all my little crafts and make things. Of course, that's what like most addicts like. They like to what they call tweaking, right? Ended up finding another place, and then um, man, I was paying pretty good money for I had two of them. I was I was moving out of one, they told me I couldn't stay there anymore. And ended up, I was going over to my friend's house, and he had just talked me into it, right? I was like, no, I'm going home. I'm going home. And like I said, I've been on probation this whole time. So I was like, no, I'm going home. And he taught me into coming over. And when I did, I ended up getting pulled over. Me being honest, they asked me, you know, have you ever been in trouble? And I was like, Yeah, I'm I'm on probation. And he asked me for what? Said methamphetamine, and he said, Can we search your car? And I was like, Yeah. They searched it, and of course, they found it was quite a bit, a lot. They arrested me, I went to jail, and this is when the story gets
Arrest And Jailhouse Surrender
SPEAKER_00really good. Yeah. Okay. The darkness, I'm not proud of, right? But I know that the darkness has brought me to so much light that it's worth every bit of it, right? I would do it all over again. They take me to jail, I go to jail, and um, at first I'm scrambling, trying to get out. Please help me, somebody help me. And of course, nobody can do anything because what they caught me with was quite a bit, and lucky that I am where I am right now. And being on top of it, I was on probation. So once you get in trouble and you're on probation, there is this automatic prison time. Yeah. Man, so the whole say when I first got in, like I tell you, it was a darkness. I was locked in, you know, like a cage, but it was in a with concrete walls and no light, no sunlight. First time I ever really had to like deal with something like that. And um, that was tough. That was really tough. You know, at the time I wasn't, I didn't care that I didn't have drugs, right? I just wanted to go home. So I told myself, you know what? I remember I was on the phone with my mom and my son. I said, you know what? I'm when I get out, I'm gonna be stronger mentally, physically, and spiritually. I promise. I started diving into any kind of faith-based book I could possibly get my hands on. So um, you know, dived into uh the Bible and the faith-based books. Um, and um, I had never read a full book until I went to jail. And by the time I left jail, I couldn't even tell you how many books I've read.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I knew my mom in her mind would think, oh, this is just jailhouse religion, right? Um, because as I got to know him, I got closer to him. Yeah. And um at night I would wake up in the middle of the night and I would just go into straight prayer, you know, spend a lot of time talking to God, getting to know him, right? And that's like that's the love story. Like if I could say anything about my testimony, it is the greatest love story I've ever like ever been told, right? And then I got moved from what they call like, you know, the like pretty much like a dungeon, right? And I got moved into where I could start working. And so it's a it's an area where there's a lot more females. There's man, I want to say 20-something women in this pod. And we did have like this area, this courtyard where you could go outside and you could like have time during the day. A lot of the women would sleep. They would, you know, they would find drugs somehow and they would take pills and they'd try to go to sleep. For the most part, I would try to minister. You know, whatever I I found out or knew about God, I would start talking to like girls that I knew. Or there would be girls that would come in that were so young. They were so young, 18 years old. You know, they'd start crying because they're stuck in, they're stuck in jail and they're looking at prison time. And so I would like start comforting them and trying to help them the best I could, even though I was going through my own stuff. The Lord gave me this, like, this peace and this joy while in jail. Like I should be scrambling and freaking out and and wanting to be out of this place, right? But instead, I had this peace and joy. And um, every day, every day I would take, I'd go to work early in the morning, and then I would come home about afternoon and I would take my books, and I learned how to walk around this courtyard and read at the exact same time. And so I would read and I'd walk and read and walk in this circle. And uh some girls would come up to me and they'd start talking to me. And all right, you want to talk? So I'd start telling them things that I was learning in my faith-based books, you know. And so there were several women that were uh saved during this time. And then we would do these Jericho walks and we'd pray at nighttime. So even at the worst times, right, I still had, I knew he was with me. And like I saw say, I had this bubble of protection. Protection around me the whole time.
SPEAKER_04And um did you did you have any kind of support system in or outside? Like, did people like contact you? Anything?
SPEAKER_00So believe it or not, okay, when I was arrested, all these people who I thought were friends, every single one of them bailed on me. Not one stayed with me. The only one who stayed with me was my mother and my son. My poor mother had to sit here and she had to learn that I was an IV user. She had no idea. And I remember the day that she came to visit me at jail. I don't even know how it got how it started. And she asked me, you know, how, and I told her. And the look on her face, man, just like killed me. I'm like, I'm so sorry. Because for most normal people, they think of that as just absolutely disgusting. And in reality, it it is disgusting, you know. But um, so yeah, she was my backbone. She was the one that was putting money on my books. Um, my son, my mom came every Sunday, and I just remember I would see him walk through that door, and I was just like, Oh my gosh, I'm like, God, if you just give me one more chance, one more chance, and I will I will do everything I can to make it right. And I promise I make it right.
SPEAKER_03And um So when you went to prison or jail. Jail. Um what was your sentence? How much time were you supposed to yeah?
SPEAKER_00So they so since I was um caught with as much as I was, and it was also in liquid form, which is automatically manufacturing, right? That's a manufacturing charge. Um, I was looking at 15 years, and they were not coming off the 15 years. Um, I think it was like my ninth, my eighth month of being in jail that um they told me, no, I needed to make a decision now.
SPEAKER_03And so So even when you're looking at 15 years, you still had this peace and joy.
SPEAKER_00And you know, I had this feeling that he was gonna relieve me from it. I had this feeling that I was going home still. And it's wild because not only did I have to deal with uh Montgomery County, right? I had to deal with Harris County. So if I got out of getting probation at Montgomery County, then I went to Harris and says I broke probation by catching another charge, it's automatic prison time. Right? Automatic prison time. Um so so yeah, so during that time I had some peace and joy. Don't get me wrong, I had my moments where I was like, Lord, like I don't, I don't think like it was it was tough.
SPEAKER_01It was really tough.
SPEAKER_00But I did make the decision I was gonna learn, I was gonna get to know him, and I was going to do everything I could to change, right? I wanted to allow God to change me. And I remember even saying, transform me, make me into the woman that you want to make me, right? Like, I don't, I'm making all the wrong decisions, and I'm tired of making the wrong decisions.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you were fully surrendered, fully surrendered.
SPEAKER_00And so I spent a lot of time in jail.
Dandelions And Miracles Behind Bars
SPEAKER_00I spent a lot, and so out of all these, okay, out of all these women, let me tell you some little stories that were going on, some of these crazy wild blessing stories. Um, one of them was a lot of these women love to chit-chat with men when they call them pin pals, right? Little pin pals. And that did not, I did not want to get to know any guy, any guys, right? I wanted to know one guy, and one, and that's the Lord, right? And so one of my friends ended up talking me into writing this guy, and he was an atheist. So, of course, I'm like, came on.
SPEAKER_04Have a different angle here, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I wanted to tell him because like there were miracles that were going on around me that were just undescribable, right? Like things, and I'm about to tell you one. Um, and so I'm writing this guy, and he was an artist, um, very dark artist. It was like, you know, like evil clowns, and like um, I think he was like, I want to say like a warlock or um he he said it wasn't like devil worshiping, but it was some kind of like witchcraft or man, it wasn't a witchcraft, some kind of like I'd have to try to remember what it is, some kind of religion. Yeah, right. Um, and so like I would talk about my God and he would kind of tell a little bit about his. But he was a good artist and he would draw all these crazy things. And um, so he asked me one day, he's like, um, he's like, Brandy, he's like, on this in the letter, he's like, What's your favorite flower? And I was like, Oh, I don't really have a favorite flower. I said, it would have to be a weed, uh, it'd be a dandelion, right? So I asked him to draw me a dandelion. Never got a message back from him. He never drew me one, it was two days, and I had court, and um I went to court, and that's when I found out they're like, they're not coming off 15 years. So I go back into the dorms, and I'm like talking to the ladies, and I just I collapse, I surrender. I'm like, I just started bawling, and they're all around me, you know, trying to comfort me. And um, like they're they're not coming off 15 years. And um, two of the ladies, one of them spoke Spanish, and one of them was my really good friend, and still is my good friend today. Um they take me outside because they're they were religious, right? Or they were they were Christians, and um they took me outside and we're sitting outside. And let me remind you, the outside is not really outside, okay? So it is a circle, right, with concrete walls that go way up high with barbara fence, right? Half of the sky, half of the top is all concrete, so you have this little baby patch of open air. Yeah, okay. Um, it had rained the day or that day, right? So it had just rained. Um, and we're sitting outside and um we're sitting in a circle and we're holding hands and we're praying, and one is praying in Spanish, and it sounded so beautiful. And the other lady in front of me, uh my my good friend, is uh speaking in tongues. And at this time I've never heard tongues, right? And I'm like, whoa, it was kind of trippy. But while she's doing this, all of a sudden I could feel this feeling in my stomach, and it was like I could just wanted to start laughing. So me and her are just like laughing back and forth, and I was shaking. I had that giddy feeling all over me. As we're doing this, the whole courtyard starts swarming with like dandelion seeds. And I look up and I'm like, oh my gosh. And so one of my other friends comes outside and she's like, Brandy, she's like, Do you see that? And I'm like, Yeah, I was like, that's God romancing. And she laid down on the ground, I laid down on the ground, I'm just like, I'm in just in awe. And I've got witnesses to this. This actually happened.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So after that, like the dandelion's kind of been like my little, my, my love flower, right? When I went, got out of jail, and I was baptized. Um, me and my mom decided to get baptized together. And right as I'm about to go under into the water, like a cluster of five dandelion seeds fly right in front of my face, and I'm like, muff, and I go under. So there's been like these little like things like that, and he's done things like that. Another thing he did um was so I was outside and I was sitting up against the wall, because I always stayed outside because it I didn't like it inside because there was so much like bickering and arguing and just drama, right? And I wanted to stay away from the drama, and the only peace I could get would be to go outside. And so um I was sitting outside and I was reading my Bible, and um some girls come outside and they're like bickering and talking mess and stuff, and I'm like, and it was so loud, and I'm like, Lord, make them go away. You know, this is my first instinct, right? Make them go away. And then I stopped myself and I'm like, you know what? That's not right. That's not, that's not, that's not right for me to say that. I was like, this is their home too, right? I was like, you know, so I'll just kind of I'll just try to read through it. And about that time, that little area starts just pouring down rain, right? So it drowns out the rain, drowns out the noise of the ladies, and they go walking inside. And I'm sitting there and I'm just like, I'm just laughing, I'm smirking at this point, right? And then um all of a sudden, like this little patch in the sky breams down, and it's like just enough sun to make it look like my Bible was glowing. And so I have like little, little things like that that I knew he was there, you know, he was there. And so, yes, I I still like I wanted out, you know, I wanted to go home, I wanted another chance. Um, and at this point, the transformation has, you know, already started. I couldn't imagine going back to it, right? Um, I think I needed that much time out, right? I think I needed I needed that time with him, a little time out with him. Yeah. Out of all the women that were in jail with me, there was only like three of us that got probation. So when I finally said, you know what? All right, maybe, maybe God, you want me to go to prison and you want me to minister these to these women, like maybe that's what you want. And I finally said, Okay, if this is what it's gonna have to be, then you know. And not long after that is when um we ended up getting another lawyer. They this one lawyer knew me because every time I went to court, I was always the girl who was smiling. So he kind of knew me as that girl. And so when my mom called him, you know, I was like, hey, just tell her that the girl is always the one that's smiling. So we ended up hiring this lawyer, and um, it was already at the point where I had to make a decision. Like either I like I had to accept it. Like I was going. And so he came in one day, and um, I think it was this my second, my second uh court case. So he comes back and he's like, All right, they offered you six years probation.
From 15 Years To Probation
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, what? He's like, Do you want to take it? And I'm like, Well, yeah, I want to take it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so they went from 15 years inside to six years outside on probation. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Isn't that amazing? That I mean, and I was like, out of all the girls, they all went to prison. All my friends went to prison. Um and I was the one, like me and like two other girls were the only ones who got probation, and which is very rare, right? Especially if you already had a case of the same charge and you were on probation, it's like that's just not, it's not yeah, they don't do that.
SPEAKER_03So was that in Montgomery or was that Montgomery? Okay. So now it's Harris.
SPEAKER_00So now I had to deal with Harris County. Um, and like I said, like there were so many miracles that happened. Um during that time, I made so many friends, and I seen a lot of women like give their life to God. Um I seen got to see it's one of the I believe it or not, it's one of the best times of my life. And it's crazy to say that being in jail, right? Besides being away from my mom and my son, you know, but to have that that alone time, that quiet time, and not have to go to work, not have to do anything, but just focus on him and focus on helping other people. And um, so so yeah, I had to go to Harris County, so they ended up picking me up. And when I tell you the difference between jails is night and day. The darkness inside Harris County is like no other. There's hundreds and hundreds of women, and just even that alone is a whole like it's crazy things that's happened. So when I get to Harris County, I mean I stayed in the airport they call airport, right? Waiting for like two days, sleeping on the floor. And then I ended up asking for a like a job inside Harris County. Um, ended up working and I was like moving food, you know, like handing food to like the pods and stuff like that. While I was doing that, I ended up liking it because I was active and I was able to like get out and move around. And somehow during this time, they put me in this what they call the whole program. Okay, so it's for like people who are prostitutes, things like that. I don't know how I got into this program. It was by accident that I got into this program. And when I got into this program, um they had like little school. Like we would have a lady that would come in and she would say things a little bit, but then the girls would go through certain things, like educational things, like one person would teach it. And it had been like maybe like, I don't know, maybe my third day there. Um, they had some like one of the girls that was doing like the teaching left. And so they somehow they picked me to do it, right? And like, I am not a teacher. And so they ended up putting me in charge of this. Well, of course, I'm gonna go biblical on them, right? And so I know that like I would get like this, we had this big whiteboard and easy, like the erase board, and I would put like a Bible scripture, and then I would put like um you know, a question and ask a question. And so I was able to kind of like do a little ministering in this uh this with the whole program, but I was locked down. I didn't care for it as much. So I did one out of it, right? Even though I was and obviously God wanted me there. And then I had mentioned when I first got in there that I wanted to keep my job and not go into this program. And so I guess at that time when they did, they ended up transferring me again. They put me in what they call the animal tanks, and this is where all the fighting is. I mean, I like I remember being in Montgomery County, they were talking about women who we had these little hot pots, that's how we cooked our food, that they would take the water, the hot water, and throw it on the women's face. And like, like it was that bad. So I was a little, I was a little worried at first, you know, going over to Harris County. But when I was in the Hope program, I was like, you know what, Lord, you got me. I know you got this bubble of protection around me. And ended up going into these animal tanks, and like it was it was perfect. Like, like I was sit there, like the people I was in the tank with, we talked about God, we did, we talked about the Bible. One of the women that was in there, she was in there for murder, and she was reading the Bible, you know. So, like, there's a lot of people, they were they were giving their lives to the Lord, you know. Within Harris County, I moved like four times, which is not normal, right? I was in the animal tanks for a while, and then um, and then they moved me to the new new jail, and it was like same thing. Got to minister to girls inside the the new jail, and um, it was different, like it was it was more relaxed. We had a gym, we could go outside, and like it was we had to get up early in the morning, make our beds, and it was it was peaceful, right? Um, and during that time, I think it was like, I don't know, maybe my second or third day when I was in there, we were got to go outside, and I hadn't seen sunlight in a like in a while. So I get to go outside, and I remember I was laying down on the concrete, and uh I was just thanking God. I had my eyes closed. I was like, thank you, Jesus, thank you, like because I'm finally in some peace, or not necessarily peace, but outside feeling the sun. And here comes that little dandelion, and that one little dandelion comes and it lands on my stomach, and uh, I'm like, man. So those little things like that, that's how I know he's real. Of course, you have to take a leap of faith, right? You have to like take a leap of faith and try to get to know him or or let him in. But once you do, then you can start seeing things around you that that he does. It's just amazing, like crazy things. So I ended up going home. I ended up getting a bond. I got out.
SPEAKER_03So, how long were you in Harris County? Yeah, it's like a month and a half, something like that.
SPEAKER_04So total, total, what were we talking about? From 10 months. Okay.
SPEAKER_03From 15 years. Wow. God is good.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So um, I get out and um continue, continue to keep, you know, God first,
Rebuilding Life And Finding Purpose
SPEAKER_00right? Um, stayed in the word. I think that I think that's one of the biggest things people miss is that you have to stay in his word, right? Like every day I read. Every day I read. I got out, started going to Woodlands Church, and um then I kind of started reunited with you guys. Yeah. Then got a job, started working, moving furniture. Believe it or not, I liked it, but I was moving furniture, and that's when I knew that I needed to get my butt in shape.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That was difficult.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was difficult, especially being isolated like that. Yeah. I guess during that time, um, stayed connected, um, got into life group, uh, got baptized again um with my mom, which was nice. Um, my son, that was probably one of the best things is be able to come home and him see that transformation and him go and him like me telling him all the stories that happened while I was in jail. And like him, he was actually would listen to me. He'd stop, and his face would just be like in awe, right? Because he saw the transformation, he could see it, and he knew that obviously like he believed spiritually, he knew there's something spiritual, right? But he didn't believe in Jesus. And um, I think that was one of the best things for me as a mother to see like your child actually give his life to God. So I think a lot of my mom, same thing. My mom got baptized. I think her seeing the transformation, and this wasn't this wasn't jailhouse religion, right? This wasn't just something me trying to get out or putting on an act. This was life-changing. This this is my life now, it's different. Like in my life group, I just remember so many times I was like, okay, God, what do you want me to do? Because I I kind of struggled with jobs, right? A lot of people don't want to hire someone who's, you know, um, you know, drug addict or a dealer. So I ended up getting a job at Rise at a place called Rise, and I and I told them, you know, the truth about my background. And since I was upfront and honest, they they hired me. And that kind of started my wellness when I started to get into wellness because it's a lot of holistic therapies and things like that. And then um, I still felt lost, you know. I was like, God, what do you want me to do?
SPEAKER_04Lost meaning no you didn't know what your purpose I kind of lost, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because when you're in jail, you had people to minister to right in front of you. Yeah, and so out here it's like where's my people? You know? Where's my people?
SPEAKER_00It was a great way of actually saying it. Yeah. Um, so yeah, and it was like, you know, I had my mom and my my son, but really being in around a group of people.
SPEAKER_03Had you had you opened up to your life group yet? About no.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, no. Um, in fact, I didn't open up to them, and they're gonna love this. Um, I opened up to them until maybe, I don't know, maybe five, six months ago, maybe. Oh wow. So it's been a while. Yeah. I wanted them to see me. Yeah. You know, like in all honesty, I want people to see who I am now before making that judgment. Because they judge, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And you know, maybe I don't think my life group necessarily would have judged. I think they're they are super women.
SPEAKER_04That's how we are. We know.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's how Satan keeps us from telling our testimony.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's trying to isolate you, right? Tommy, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Very true. Um, so uh, so at this time, I was trying to find my purpose. God, what do you want me to do? I've always been driven to do like um out of country, like I want to go out of the country and do missionary work. That's to me would be just the ideal dream, right? And in God's time, not saying it's not gonna happen because I do believe it's gonna happen um one day, right? I just remember like I would watch like one word, purpose-driven life? Uh brick horn. So I remember I was kind of like, and I don't really watch him much anymore. Not saying he's bad, but but I was like always trying to find my purpose, right? And I would always pray about it, God help me, help me. And it, you know, for a while I was like, okay, well, maybe it's just not time. And one day I had gone to my life group and I was talking to him about me feeling that my desire to know what it is that he wants me to do. And I was telling him about uh my fitness journey because I had started working out and um my body was transforming and I was feeling better. And um one of the girls that was sitting next to me, which is one of my really good friends in my life group, she goes, Brandy, talk to me after after Bible study, after Bible study. And I'm like, I'm like, okay. And she's like, God put it on my heart to tell you that uh you should like pursue personal training. I'm like, what? I'm like, okay. I'm like, all right. Well, I mean, it's something I have passion for. I love it. I love working out. Um, and then she's like, look, she said she worked at a pickleball zone. And uh she said, we're thinking about hiring a personal trainer to come in and train some of the um the uh the pickleball people, whatever you call it. Um to like train them. Yeah, there you go. The older athletes. Okay. Yeah, to train the to to train the you know, to train the athletes. And uh I was like, okay, well, you know, maybe maybe I'll pursue it. And so I ended up going to school for one of like the hardest ones, which is NASM. And when I tell you, I thought I was just gonna be able to take the class and do the school and it was gonna be easy peasy. Oh no. They want you to know every muscle, how the protein. connects to the muscle, the axioms, like everything, right? It took me a little while. But I mean at this at this point, I had like I'd read so many books. Um I was I could read fast and I could studying was easier. Like I always struggled in school.
SPEAKER_03So God was preparing you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So ended up passing um like only 60% actually passed this test.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I was one of the 60%. So ended up passing the test and I get a job working for Crunch and it's class, it's like you know, class fitness. Nervous all get out. Like trying to be on the mic for the first time is nerve-wracking. And um especially people like especially because I had to write my own programs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It was I was so bad at first. It was horrible. I knew what I was doing but it was horrible. And then the more I prayed about it, right? The more I actually said, God, you gotta help me because I had so much fear in me. The fear just over over overtook me. When it finally went away, it went away. It was like one day I had no more fear right so I've had I don't know maybe four jobs at this time I was working at Rise at a wellness clinic working at Crunch and then started working at F-45 which opened the door to such an amazing job. Like the community the people are so amazing. I love it. Like when before I go to work before I walk in those doors I pray that God blesses every person that walks in that door that He gives me the ability to train them the way that they need to be trained. And man I absolutely I love it. I love it. Now not only am I able to help other people instead of like selling drugs to people and watching them you know shoot up and watching the devil just take over because you could see it in their face right I'm able to see people smile and people love to work out and make it fun and make it to where you know joyful where they want to go you know instead of it being such a like oh I gotta go work out. Right. They enjoy it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I get to help people in an in an in a whole different way.
SPEAKER_04I mean with the the word repent means to turn around and go the other way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So you completely I mean like you you hear transformation stories and in and people repenting but like you went from one path of destroying your own body and other people's body to now doing the exact opposite of what it was. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah um and what's crazy about that is um you know they say once an addict always an addict I don't believe it I don't believe people can't change either but God can yeah because right now do you have any no desire no desire no desire in fact I was telling my boyfriend this I was like I was like most people they have to like stay away from it right because there's always that draw to it right you could throw it in my face and I wouldn't touch it. Or the simple fact that um it's not like if I do it one time I'll go back to it. It's honestly like as if I never touched it. Yeah like it's not just being sick like oh that's gross it's almost as if I never touched it I'm so afraid like as if I was a first time user. Yeah that's that's that makes sense. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER_03Because God made a new creation. You are a new creation.
SPEAKER_00It's almost like I never never did it. Um and not only has like I mean as far as being when I was using I was underweight I look like I was dying. I mean it really did I mean there's multiple people that told me like they were worried about me because I look so sick. You know of course you're inhaling it you're taking all this stuff. Oh that was another thing. I quit vaping which was a good thing. So I quit vaping and the only way I could quit vaping I will have to say vaping was harder was every my boyfriend prayed for me every hour on the hour right and every time I would have a craving for it I would beg. It wasn't just praying I would beg Lord you've got no you could do this help me and I was able to never pick it up put it down and never pick it up again. But I mean so transformation when I say about transfer this is the healthiest I've ever been I eat super healthy um I don't put anything well I mean maybe a few things you know maybe some but I know I don't put bad things in my body um I've done high rocks competitions I mean pretty much when I like coaching people I have to work out right so if they're doing plyo lunges I'm right there I'm doing it with them I'm like all right let's go let's do these plyo lunges I'm in the best shape I've ever been and just for this podcast I asked God to help me Wednesday run 21 miles and I ran 21 miles in constant prayer the whole time and he helped me through it. So as I was running like it got like it was a kind of a cool day which is right now there's no such thing right it was kind of a cool um at the very end when I got to my last six mile stretch the sun started coming out it was like it was starting to get really hot I said that I would pray God help me like help me get through this last little bit because you know 21 was what I was wanting to do. Like a gust of wind would come up and just like it'd get me or the clouds would cover the sun you know to like stop that so I could actually get through this run. Yeah and I made it through the run I hit my first PR and then this week I hit 70 miles total of running so just for this podcast.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because I was like you know what I want to show them just what a transformation that's amazing that God's done. Fantastic I mean going from could you imagine going from like poisoning yourself to now like doing things that a lot of people can't do. Right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah you know it's amazing yeah so I've got I got two last questions for you one going through everything she went through losing three major people in your life and then going to to jail and having a life transformation but did you ever have a moment and maybe you had one moment but I'm in a serious like God you're not real like if you were real like no no when you were in the moment in in jail before the life transformation okay like hey you you can't be real how can you be real I've lost this person this person this person I'm in prison I can't I can't shake this I've I've asked you and and did you have that?
SPEAKER_00No I never I never um I guess maybe I kind of blame God a little bit but I always just felt like I had a black cloud over me. Yeah um I was negative Nancy and I felt like I could never shake this black cloud. Yeah and it wasn't that I thought that God was doing it I thought I was doing it. Okay. Like it was crazy as I thought I was like every man in my life that I was close to I would kill is what I thought.
SPEAKER_04I'm killing these people and so I had that was something I had to deal with but I will say the difference between now and back then that black cloud that haunted me and I think once you're in that mindset trying to cope with things you can't yeah like you absolutely can't cope with it because you automatically in that negative so go from that and tell my other question was going to be what what were you going to tell people if they're in that position?
SPEAKER_00Like what were you So I went through something okay so even though um even though like I lost all these people right and it was hard I would definitely say to them turn to him turn to him don't try to fix it on your own and um just trust that he's he's that there's a reason right there's there's always a reason.
Son’s Cancer And A New Calm
SPEAKER_00But I will say that the person back then that was trying to deal with these deaths didn't know how to deal with it right because I didn't have God now when I got out of jail something bad did happen right um I was hit with probably one of the one the mom's worst nightmare my son had cancer and oh my gosh you talk about I can deal with any death in the world right I can deal with anybody going but my child my child is the one thing I asked I prayed for God do not take please don't take my son and so he was diagnosed with cancer and the first thing when we found out the old me would have freaked out worried screamed like oh you know like it was like the end of the world right but this time I went to prayer the first thing I did was went straight to prayer. Me, my son prayed my mom we prayed um which is not like my family right um my son's faith at this time had completely changed he was baptized I believe that already at this point um completely changed given his life to God and since I did trust in the Lord that he Mason was going to be okay I knew he was going to be okay right and Mason had to go through intense chemo like we were he would just spend an entire week at MD Anderson while he was getting injected with chemo and during that time we had some of the best times we had so much fun we would run up and down the hallways um we'd he'd start working out because at this point he's like all shredded right like he's real big into working out and um like you know we would do things we weren't supposed to like go outside the building and like you know so we had we had a bonding time so we bonded and um so that's the difference handling things now seem like they're so easy. Yeah so easy because no matter what this life is short. Yeah right yeah I mean I know the one person that I need to have is with me at all times. Like and like I'll be driving down the road it's like so grateful driving down the road and I got this huge smile on my face and just start laughing like wow like where I'm at today it's like night and day. I have to me the best life right now.
SPEAKER_04And I granted there is going to be some hard times right yeah but it's different when you have him yeah so do you think like when you when you lost your brother do you think if there was somebody and and you know you guys weren't really following Christ this time so yeah do you think if there was somebody a a a physical being friend family whatever that could have been there for you guys in that way in that capacity of uh maybe a faith guiding person do you think that things might have been different?
SPEAKER_00No let me tell you why um because I think it had I had to go through this had to go through it. Yeah um and in all in the reality I'm glad they weren't yeah um God gave me enough time right he was patient God is so patient and um he gave me enough time to go through darkness to really appreciate the things that I have in my life because when you've when you've been that dark that uh that much evil and you actually have light it's like what is it like yah Yahweh you can breathe you know so uh it's the first word anybody ever says a baby comes out and they say Yahweh because they breathe in yeah when you run I love it I love it it's more like yahweh yahweh yahweh yah so so yeah um no and I'm glad they they weren't because it wasn't my time. Yeah um now there are some regrets I have right I think um there's some regrets of people that I may have hurt in the process right um we live in a sinful world those people that were hurt I know God is protecting right God's already put them in maybe a healthy relationship or maybe put them in the path of like transformation right um so I know I'm forgiven for that and um but other than that I I wouldn't change it yeah for anything it's my love story.

Closing Prayer And Sendoff
SPEAKER_04Okay great yeah for sure uh God we just thank you uh so much for the time that you've provided here and thank you so much for uh Brandy's uh just openness and vulnerability and uh being able to share her story and and uh possibly helping somebody out there we do ask that uh that you do help somebody that you reach somebody that you change a life through this story that it's shared and people hear it and know there's hope even in the darkest places that you can be there's hope that you're there that you're a light that you're a dandelion that you're a um you know whatever it is that that that person has a favorite flower a favorite color or a beam of light from the sun that you're speaking to them and there's hope. I just pray that they can see that I pray that they feel your presence I pray that there's life change I pray that they turn to you I pray that they seek you every day I pray that they read their Bible I pray that their character is changed so they can just show that on the outside and their actions are different and people see that and they ask them questions and they're able to say it's Jesus I just thank you so much for the opportunity to just know Brandy to be able to be here and talk to her and ask her questions and be able to just hear your story written through her so we just thank you so much for her we lift her up to you to continue to bless so that she can continue to bless others in the way she does and the way you use her.
