In this episode, I sit down with Trevor Franklin, co-founder of Performance HQ — a luxury boutique training studio in Union Square. Trevor shares what it actually feels like to build something from scratch and ther challenge and stress that comes with that.

We talk about his journey from Lubbock, Texas to New York City, his early days at Orangetheory, and the leap into entrepreneurship.

But a big part of this conversation centers around identity. Trevor is an endurance athlete who recently faced a 16-week left femur bone bruise — an injury that forced him to confront what happens when your physical output, your edge, and your routine are suddenly stripped away. We talk about the psychological side of injury, the fear of losing momentum, and the tension between being “the athlete” and being “the business owner.”

He also walks through how he programs strength as “prehab” for runners, how he thinks about energy management as a coach, and the recovery tools he leans on: sauna and cold plunge protocols, compression, acupuncture, and dry needling.

And then we go deeper.

Trevor gives a candid account of his steroid use in his early 20s — why he started, the rapid gains, the health crash that followed, knee and gynecomastia surgeries, and the reality of dosing culture in competitive spaces. He shares the analogy he now uses with younger athletes and what he wants them to understand about short-term gains versus long-term costs.

This is a conversation about hustle — but also restraint. About growth — but also fragility. About pushing limits — and learning when to pull back.

If this episode resonates, share it with someone navigating injury, entrepreneurship, or chasing performance at any cost. And as always, subscribe, rate, and review — it helps us grow the show and keep these conversations going.
