A podcast about what really goes on behind the scenes of building brands, businesses, and personal platforms.
We talk marketing, content, branding, community, and the uncomfortable middle between idea and execution.

Alright, we're recording. What is this?
SPEAKER_00Episode 18.
SPEAKER_0118. We haven't released an episode in two weeks, I think.
SPEAKER_00For two weeks now.
SPEAKER_01And we've been up to a lot.
SPEAKER_00And that is the reason why. Yeah. We've been busy.
SPEAKER_01We also just didn't have a space to film the podcast.
SPEAKER_00And no.
SPEAKER_01We've been on the go so much that we haven't been uh to Den in a while.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01But we upgraded.
SPEAKER_00We have our own little podcast set up now.
SPEAKER_01We upgraded. We I've always wanted to have a podcast, and being able to partner with Den 1880 has made that possible by being able to use their podcast studio. And so if we didn't have that space, I don't think we would even have a podcast right now.
SPEAKER_00No, I don't think we would be here. But I think over the last three or four weeks we've realized how necessary it is to bring the tools to us rather than go to them just because of how busy we are.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was a big reason.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and now we can literally bring this anywhere with us.
SPEAKER_01That's the goal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think, like I was saying, I've always wanted to do podcasting and create a space for creatives, talk to the business owners about content. And I've wanted to have that space where we're having those conversations directly with them. And that wasn't possible. But now it is. We can take this anywhere we want.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like this has been something we've wanted, we've both wanted to tap into a lot in the recent months. Just a different outlet for not only ourselves, but for other people. And I think we've been able to really connect with lots of people outside of our local community and really start these discussions and have these conversations with people and just give people the skills and the tools that they need.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It would definitely level up our projects too. Yeah. Because we've been on a bunch of content sessions where this setup would be so necessary. Oh yeah. But we just have didn't have it.
SPEAKER_00No, but now we do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We've evolved.
SPEAKER_01We have. I'm really excited to be in Muskoka and bring this and use it for ourselves, but also bring it to our clients and have people on the podcast there and talk about their journey book content. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I feel like not a lot of people are doing that up there.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I think there's so much potential.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it gives us an opportunity to not only have conversations with new people, but also different communities of and brands and businesses too. Yeah. That's such a wide range up there.
SPEAKER_01People probably don't know what we're up to.
SPEAKER_00No, we should probably fill them in update them.
SPEAKER_01We've been in Muskoka quite a bit ever since beginning of June.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's been every week since then.
SPEAKER_01Why? Why have we been in Muskoka?
SPEAKER_00I have been teaching up in Muskoka at the Hustle and Flow location. It's their noob up there. So that kind of brought both of us up. Matt did a lot of the opening or grand opening content for them to help promote the Muskoka location. And everything started to roll in from there. And ever since we have literally not been not working.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that first week was insane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it was what four days?
SPEAKER_01Four days of getting there, basically putting the studio together, yeah, with the help of everyone, and then straight into a 10-hour content day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Matt didn't drop his camera once.
SPEAKER_01No, but that was so exciting.
SPEAKER_00It was such a cool day. We worked with Hustle and Flow, and they partnered with Jane's Cottages up in Muskoka, and they so graciously gave the team a space there to shoot the content. I don't know. I don't I can't speak for Matt, but I think we both do agree how unreal that setting was and how creative both of us felt in that space. Yeah, like the architecture, the style, the lighting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Everything was insane.
SPEAKER_01And since then, the content we've been putting out has been resonating with so many more people up there. Yeah. And we've been talking to a lot of m new businesses too, and making those connections. And that has been wonderful.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that whole entire day was the gateway to everything else we've been up to. Yeah. And it's been really exciting for the both of us. We, I don't think together as a team, we haven't been this busy.
SPEAKER_01Busy.
SPEAKER_00It's such a cool thing, and we're working even closer together now, which I think we do really like.
SPEAKER_01When I first started this business, I was doing a lot of social media management, just myself. So I was basically handling everything from shooting to editing to management to posting to distribution to getting the analytics to everything. And for the longest time, I stopped even offering that. But now I feel like we have the bandwidth to do that on a better level, too, on a bigger level.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and definitely a more organized and like we've always said we wanted to get back to that point too.
SPEAKER_01Because you've been in that space before, just with the jobs you've had. And so we already said that would be the ideal scenario.
SPEAKER_00And partnership.
SPEAKER_01Because everything is just so seamless.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. I agree. And it just adds another element to the Ortley Media brand and what services we can provide. And then now that it's not just Matt, we have us, we have another team working behind the scenes as well, supporting us, which has been really great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Slowly building this team out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which is really cool.
SPEAKER_01Crazy to say.
SPEAKER_00I know. You're doing big things.
SPEAKER_01We're so excited though. I think being able to highlight these projects and showcase, treat them as case studies. Yeah. And share the results and the impact it has when everything works together will be amazing to see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And there's a new kind of uniqueness to what we're creating, just because being up in Muskoka is obviously very different than being in the city, and it has a different style and energy. And I think being up there, it gives us an opportunity to challenge our content creation and also expand and kind of I don't know. It's just like kind of it elevates it big time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I actually made a video about this the other day and posted it. How as creatives, if you're really only doing work in one part of the city or town or wherever you are, sometimes you can feel very lonely. Not lonely, but you're very limited to what you can shoot and where you can go. Once you start going to those other areas and finding work there, that's when kind of everything starts to blow up a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I think you gain more inspiration and new momentum being inspired. And new confidence, too. 100%. And that's, I think, has been like a huge part of this too, is so many people are recognizing the level of content and the quality behind what Matt creates. And I think that is one a very cool thing to see from my perspective. But I think it also, like you said, gives you that extra little bit of confidence going into new projects and even expanding the brand itself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Even the vast variety of businesses we're working with now. Yeah, it's huge. A month ago, if you said I was working with a garden center and then the next day working with a marina. Yeah. Or a book company. Yeah. Or a construction company. Like there's so many different businesses up there that they all need content. And the issue is since their season is so short, they're, I guess you could take it both ways. They're either forced to create better content or they stay where they're at.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And let everyone else get a head start, especially going into next summer. Yeah. The ones that are creating content now and creating a batch of content to hold them over the winter, they start off a lot stronger too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But I think that's what makes us so excited about the clients that have said yes and have really have a lot of faith and trust in what we offer. I think for us, it's okay. These businesses are wanting to put themselves out there in a new way and expand their quality of content and just get a broader audience and eye on their business. And I think when people are excited about that and ready to fully commit, that's also what gets us excited because we want to grow with those businesses too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. 100%. Let's shift a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Shift.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Let's talk about Club 60 a little bit. We had your launch.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Did we talk about that?
SPEAKER_00No. We the last time we talked, it was I think a week out.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So we did.
SPEAKER_01And then we posted that episode after the event.
SPEAKER_00We never really did the full episode.
SPEAKER_01No. And we planned to we plan to do a little case study around it.
SPEAKER_00But literally since that day, we haven't stopped.
SPEAKER_01We've been on the go.
SPEAKER_00I think I've said that multiple times. I was like, when is there a day where we don't do anything?
SPEAKER_01How many days are you in right now without a break?
SPEAKER_0023.
SPEAKER_01That is insane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's real dumb of me.
SPEAKER_01But it'll be worth it when we're on the beach in Portugal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So yeah, we had our launch party for Club 60. And leading up to that day, I think there was a lot of nerves and excitement surrounding the event itself. But I honestly couldn't have imagined a better day. I said this to Matthew and my family that the night before I literally had a dream that no one showed up. So the fact that 60 people showed up was actually insane. And I didn't anticipate that amount of people and that outcome. And literally the best day, I couldn't have asked for a better day.
SPEAKER_01The one thing you did say afterwards was how you were so happy about how people stayed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Afterwards. Whereas I think most events you go to, they will do that portion of the workout or whatever. And then people will just immediately leave. Yeah. Where you had the space until three, I think, right? And people stayed. Everyone basically stayed until kind of the cutoff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I think not that I think that shocked me, but it was surprising. But it made me feel so good to know that I created a space and a community event where people felt like they could hang out, they could talk to new people, they met new friends, they moved their bodies and they did so many good things for themselves. And then still took time out of their afternoon to just stay. Yeah. And that was big for me. And I don't, I still don't even think I've fully thought about that day because we've been so on the go. But I remember all like these emotions afterwards. I think I stood in the parking lot and just cried for a little bit and then I got myself together because we were going out after.
SPEAKER_01We went above and beyond too. I if you saw the amount of if the people listening right now saw the amount of work that was put into this event down to the small details of stamping the napkins. Napkins. Yeah, with my logo. And putting a sticker on that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which almost broke.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That was like for me, that was like the sign that the day was going to be a good day because we had this big IKEA mirror that I put a big Club 60 logo on it so people could take photos. And literally before the event, it fell over and somehow did not break.
SPEAKER_01We I was shooting a video of your sister and we heard it come down. I was like, and all we stopped and were like, and I was like, if it shattered, it's gonna be and then I heard someone say, We're good.
SPEAKER_00And then I we were, but it was one of those things where you were watching in slow motion. I was like, I can't do anything about this right now. It's going down. I was on stage testing my mic, and I was like, Oh god, but it survived.
SPEAKER_01It survived and the vendors talk about everyone that supported you too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've over the past few years I've been working with a few different vendors and companies just through the wellness space and throughout the process of planning my event. I planned or I reached out to a bunch of them because I wanted to see if they would be involved. And I was lucky enough to have greenhouse, juice, poppy, prebiotic sodas, and then we had booch, we had flourish pancakes, we had a few other ones, and we had some local catering from the three in Kitchener.
SPEAKER_01You had your sister baking energy balls, energy balls.
SPEAKER_00It was we had lots of food for everybody, made sure everybody was fed. Yeah, we had a DJ Christian, he did an amazing job. He did so good.
SPEAKER_01And you made me want to work out. No, not a chance.
SPEAKER_00But all in all, it was just like the best day ever.
SPEAKER_01A great media team, too.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Dryden, thank you so much.
SPEAKER_00Photos by Dryden for this iPhone content by Dryden.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and some photos. Yeah, it was a great day. I think we're excited to do more of those too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's definitely what I want for my community.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't have to be on that level either. No, I think just doing it more consistently, smaller scale stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it had to be that big though.
SPEAKER_01Building that just community still, even Muskoka, I think there's a lot of potential there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_01Let's quickly talk about the content behind the event.
SPEAKER_00The event itself.
SPEAKER_01Everything leading into it to while we were there, what was happening, what were we getting, and the thought behind it too. Because I feel like a lot of people will host events and only gravitate towards one recap video.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Where we had a deeper thought going into this one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we I think because we launched the event, I think a month or two months ahead, month and a half, whatever the timeline was. We from previous events that I've planned with other businesses and everything, and then same with Matt, we understood how important it's for also the pre-con, like pre-event content. And so I had probably like seven different pieces of content that went out prior to the event, just a mix of the excitement surrounding it, the uh the details itself, and also what was to come and the expectations and everything in between. So that was important to gauge the engagement behind it and also just getting people excited and ready and like the behind the scenes and all that stuff. But afterwards, I it wasn't more so me. I think it was you that you were like, this is what we should do.
SPEAKER_01Just push it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like for the like the day of, we obviously had a lot of people sharing stuff story-wise, so there was a huge engagement that way. And I think as far as the more high-quality professional content, it was really important to get the experience itself, yeah, and then also the member, the members, we had interviews, we had yeah.
SPEAKER_01So my approach going into it was I know there needed to be a lot of variety in the content. That way, when you're posting all this content a couple days, couple weeks afterwards, your audience won't feel tired of seeing the same thing. And so going into the event, I know we needed almost like testimonials from family. We needed like talking clips of people there, of why they're there, why they are supporting Club 60, why they're there for live, what it means to them, why they join Club 60, why they use the platform, how it fits into their lifestyle, and then even on a deeper level, too, getting just a bunch of photos that can be used, same with doing some trends that you typically see on socials too, and making sure that also gets put out too. And so I think for two, three weeks after the event, you were still posting stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I still think there is I still think there's some significance to those posts as well, because that's the essence of Club60, it's not just an online platform, it's a community, whether it's in person or online. Yeah, it's something that you can foster and also just showcase through the platform. And yeah.
SPEAKER_01The goal and the reason behind all of this content was because we wanted as much reach as possible. Yeah. And you wanted a way, an excuse to do another one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and to get people excited for something like this. And it yeah, I feel like with having an online platform, it's really hard to establish what kind of content is important and what's not. And I think this was like the perfect way of figuring that out for me, too. Yeah, it was a hit. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's a lot of events that always lack content, but I think this one really did well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think so.
SPEAKER_01Let's wrap it up quickly.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01What else we got going on? What's coming up?
SPEAKER_00We're heading on a big trip for July.
SPEAKER_01Before then, though, we've got a bunch of things to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a lot of meetings.
SPEAKER_01We're onboarding a couple new clients, which is exciting. We're getting projects wrapped up and delivered. We got a couple just a couple projects still that need to be shot in the last couple days. You have an event on Saturday.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01You are doing you're uploading a bunch of new videos to Club 62.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then from there we're we're heading to Portugal for a bit. Yeah. Yeah. So hopefully a couple more episodes before we leave, just to bank of them. But yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're excited. We'll talk to you soon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Episode 18. Next one is episode 19.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, stay tuned.
SPEAKER_01Ciao.
