Scripture Matters Podcast - Episode 10 (Chapter 8 "The Helper")
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if the most exhausting part of your faith is not your weakness, but your assumption that you are supposed to be strong? That one belief can quietly turn Christianity into a solo project where you try harder, fail again, and then call it “lack of discipline.” We slow down and name the real problem: God never designed the Christian life to be lived alone.
We trace the flow of Romans from sin and grace to baptism and the ongoing struggle, then land in Romans 8 where the conversation shifts from advice to help. The turning point is the promise Jesus makes in John 14 and John 16: the Holy Spirit is not a vague force or a temporary boost, but the Helper who dwells in us, teaches us, reminds us of Christ’s words, and guides us into truth. That clarity matters because it keeps us anchored in Scripture instead of chasing extremes or waiting for something dramatic.
From there we get practical. Depending on the Holy Spirit does not make faith passive; it makes faithful living possible. We talk about how spiritual growth happens as we cooperate with God’s truth day by day, how Romans 8:13 reframes the fight against sin, and how assurance becomes steadier when we start looking for God’s work in us rather than perfect performance.

The Myth Of Self Made Faith
SPEAKER_00What if the biggest struggle in your Christian life isn't your weakness, but your assumption that you're supposed to be strong? Think about it. Most of us don't wake up and say, I can't do this without God.
SPEAKER_01No, we wake up, we try harder, we try to do better, we try to push through.
SPEAKER_00And when we fail, we blame ourselves for just not having enough discipline.
SPEAKER_01Instead of realizing we were never meant to carry it in the first place.
SPEAKER_00And that, my friends, are where a lot of Christians are living right now.
SPEAKER_01Trying to maintain something that only God could create.
SPEAKER_00Trying to grow spiritually on human strength and wondering why it feels oh so exhausting.
SPEAKER_01Because here's the tension scripture says you've been given help, not advice, not a second chance. Help.
SPEAKER_00The kind of help that lives in you. The kind of help that doesn't just guide you, but actually transforms you. And yet, for a lot of Christians, the Holy Spirit is either misunderstood or practically ignored. Some are out there afraid that they'll go too far with it. Others don't go far enough. But either way, they end up in the same place. Trying to become Christ-like. Without the helper that Christ promised.
SPEAKER_01So the question isn't just, do you believe in the Holy Spirit? No, it's are you depending on him?
SPEAKER_00Because if you're not, you might be trying to live a life that was never meant to be lived alone. And that changes everything. And that's what we are discussing today, right here, on Scripture Matters.

SPEAKER_01Oh, they really, really do, folks.
From Assurance To The Helper
SPEAKER_00All right, now as we come uh into episode 10, hard to believe. Let's pause and take a moment to look back at where we were last Friday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, in episode nine, we worked through chapter seven, born again. And that was a foundational discussion, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00It really, really was because that chapter centered on faith, baptism, and that big word assurance.
SPEAKER_01And that's one of the biggest takeaways from that study that was.
SPEAKER_00Uh, yeah, our confidence is not in our memory of the moment.
SPEAKER_01No, and it's not in how well we think we performed in that moment.
SPEAKER_00No, it's in what God promised He would do. That's where assurance comes from. And that is oh, so important because a lot of sincere Christians they just keep looking back at themselves instead of trusting what God has already said and already done. And when that happens, listen, assurance becomes unstable.
SPEAKER_01But when we place our trust in God's promise, that's where confidence begins to grow.
SPEAKER_00And that naturally leads us now into chapter eight.
SPEAKER_01Because once you understand that salvation is not something you maintain by your own strength, the next question becomes how do you keep walking faithfully? How do you grow?
SPEAKER_00How do you endure?
SPEAKER_01How do you live the Christian life knowing your own weaknesses?
SPEAKER_00And that's exactly where chapter eight takes us.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, chapter eight is titled The Heiper. And it turns our attention to one of the most important truths in the Christian life: the Holy Spirit. And right away, this chapter challenges the idea that after baptism, the rest is just up to us.
SPEAKER_00Because that's how honestly a lot of people out there live.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like Jesus saved them, but now they've got to figure out how to carry out the rest of their on their own.
SPEAKER_00And let me tell you, that kind of thinking will absolutely wear you down.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and it will, Jonathan, because the Christian life was never designed to be lived on human strength alone.
SPEAKER_00And that's to to Cliff and myself, and I'm sure for Jack, the author, that's why this chapter matters so very, very much.
SPEAKER_01Because it reminds us God has not left us without help, He has given us the helper. And that's where we begin today.
SPEAKER_00And that's really uh, if you think about it, folks, that's where the apostle Paul, the flow that Paul gives us in the book of Romans, he begins by showing the depth of the problem. We've talked about this Romans chapter 3 and verse 23, which says, All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
SPEAKER_01So from the start, uh, folks, the message is clear. This is not something we can fix on our own.
SPEAKER_00And then Paul he moves into grace and justification. Think about Romans chapter 5 and verse number one that says, Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_01Which means salvation and not something we achieve. Folks, it's something God provides.
SPEAKER_00And then, as we saw in the last chapter, Paul tied that directly to baptism. In Romans chapter 6, verses 3 and 4, he says this we were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that we too might walk in newness of life.
SPEAKER_01So already, even the beginning of the Christian walk tells you something important.
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely, that this life was never meant to be lived on human strength.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and Paul is honest about the struggles that follows. In Romans chapter 7 and verse 19, he says, For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
SPEAKER_00That's huge. Think about it, because it reminds us that our struggle is real, even for someone who truly loves the Lord.
SPEAKER_01And that struggle leads Paul to cry out in Romans 7, verse 24 Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death?
SPEAKER_00Which is exactly the question that this chapter is stepping into.
SPEAKER_01Because if salvation is real, and it is, and the struggle is real, and there's no doubt it is, then where does this help come from?
SPEAKER_00And that's the point. Uh, this chapter begins to press that salvation is not just something that God starts, it's something that He sustains.
SPEAKER_01And He doesn't leave us guessing how that happens either.
SPEAKER_00No, He tells us, He gives us help. And we're not talking about occasional help, are we? We're not talking about distant help, we're talking about constant help, personal help, and that help is found in the Holy Spirit, which is where this chapter really begins to shift our thinking. Because for a lot of people out there, and Cliff and I have seen this, the Holy Spirit is either, like we've said, misunderstood or not thought about at all. And when that happens, the Christian life becomes something that it was truly never meant to be. A solo effect, a solo effort, truly, is not what it was intended to be. And that's why so many people out there feel that they are constantly struggling, constantly failing, constantly trying to do better.
SPEAKER_01Without ever feeling like they are actually growing.
SPEAKER_00Because here's the thing they're trying to do something that God never intended them to do alone, and that's the setup for everything that follows in this chapter. Before we move forward, let's summarize what we've seen here in our first segment. This chapter opens with an illustration that shows the gap between having access to something and actually being able to experience it.
SPEAKER_01And that illustration points directly to the Christian life.
SPEAKER_00Many Christians understand that they've been saved, but they still try to live the Christian life based on their own strength. And scripture itself shows both realities: the reality of salvation and the reality of struggle.
SPEAKER_01But the key truth introduced here is this God has not left us to live this life alone, He has given us the helper, and that's where we're headed to next.
Who The Holy Spirit Is
SPEAKER_00So as we move forward here in chapter eight, the focus now begins to shift, good folks, from the illustration to the identity of the helper himself. And listen, that's important because before we can understand what the Holy Spirit does, we've got to understand who he is. That's exactly right. And for a lot of people, this is where things become a little unclear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan, because the Holy Spirit is often talked about, but as we've alluded to, he is not always understood.
SPEAKER_00Some people think of the Holy Spirit as just a feeling, others think of him as some kind of vague force.
SPEAKER_01And some just avoid the subject altogether because they don't know what to do with it.
SPEAKER_00But listen, folks, the Bible doesn't leave us guessing. No, not at all. And Jesus is oh so very clear in your Bibles, John chapter 14, beginning in verse 16, he says, This I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper to be with you forever, even the spirit of truth. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
SPEAKER_01Jonathan, that's huge because right there, Jesus identifies him as a helper, and he's not a temporary helper, but a helper that will be with you forever. And notice the language, folks, he dwells with you and will be in you.
SPEAKER_00That's not a force, that's not an emotion, that's a presence.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan, and a personal presence.
SPEAKER_00And Jesus continues that thought in John chapter 14 and verse 26. He says this, but the helper, the Holy Spirit, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
SPEAKER_01So now we're not just seeing who he is, we're starting to see what he does. He teaches, he reminds, he works in connections with what Christ has already said.
SPEAKER_00And that is so important when you think about it, because it really keeps us grounded. The spirit is not leading people away from truth. No, he's leading people deeper into it.
SPEAKER_01And then Jesus adds even more in John chapter 16, verse 13. The Bible says, When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
SPEAKER_00So now you've got uh a clear picture beginning to form. Folks, he's a helper, he's present, he teaches, he reminds, and he guides into truth, and all of that really tells us something about the Christian life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan. It's not just about just trying harder, it's uh about being helped, yeah, and that's what Jesus promised.
SPEAKER_00He told his disciples he was not leaving them alone, which at that moment, think about it, was very, very important to them that he would send the helper, and that promise carries forward, Cliff, to every believer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which means a Christian life is not designed to be lived in isolation.
SPEAKER_00No, it's it's designed to be lived with the presence and help of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, I think this is where a lot of people need to just slow down and really think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because if the Holy Spirit is truly present, okay, then the Christian life is not just about external behavior, it's about internal transformation.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and Jonathan, that changes everything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Cliff, it really does. It changes how we begin to think about growth, uh, how we think about overcoming sin, and even how we think about assurance.
SPEAKER_01Because now we're not just saying, What am I doing?
SPEAKER_00No, we're asking, what is God doing in me? And folks, that's a completely different perspective. So before we move forward, um, let's summarize now what we've seen in this segment.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to focus has shifted from the need for help to the identity of the helper. And Jesus clearly identifies the Holy Spirit in John chapter 14 as well as in John chapter 16.
SPEAKER_00That's right. He is the helper who dwells with us and in us.
SPEAKER_01Remember, he teaches, he reminds, and he guides you into truth.
SPEAKER_00And again, that means that this Christian life, good folks, is not meant to be lived alone.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that sets up the next question.
SPEAKER_00Surely does. What exactly does the helper do in our daily lives?
What The Spirit Does
SPEAKER_01That's correct, Jonathan. Now that's we've established who the helper is. The next question becomes what does he actually do?
SPEAKER_00And this to uh myself and Cliff in this chapter, it's really where it starts to bring some clarity. Because for a lot of people, this is where confusion sets in. Because when people hear about the Holy Spirit working, they often think in extremes. Uh, either something just very, very emotional or something very undefined. But when you look at scripture, uh, the work of the Holy Spirit is actually very, very clear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan, and it's also very consistent, too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Jesus said that the spirit would teach, that he would remind, and that he would guide into truth. John chapter 16 and verse 13 when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you uh into all the truth, and all of that is important, Jonathan, because it shows us how the spirit works, not apart from the truth, but through it. That's such a key point, Cliff, because uh what people don't realize is that the Holy Spirit is not working independently uh of what God has already revealed in his word. No, no, it works in connection with it, not only that, in parallel with the word, which means the spirit is not ever going to lead anyone in a way that contradicts scripture.
SPEAKER_01No, he's not, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00He's leading people even deeper into it, and that's where uh Cliff and myself think a lot of people desperately need some clarity because sometimes people are they're just waiting on something dramatic, some big, you know, uh showing, when in reality the spirit is already working through what God has already said, He's teaching, He's guiding, and He's reminding. And let's not forget, He's shaping the way we think. Romans chapter 8 and verse 5, Paul writes, For those who live according to Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit, and folks, that shapes the way we live, and really that's where real transformation happens, not just external behavior, but internal change, and that's really the role of the spirit, helping us understand truth, helping us also to remember truth, and helping us to live truth. Think about Romans chapter 8 and verse 13. Paul writes this he says, For if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
SPEAKER_01And that's a very different picture than what a lot of people have. Mind Jonathan because now the Christian life is not about waiting for some kind of sign to come about. Yeah, it's it's about responding to what God has already revealed.
SPEAKER_00With the Spirit helping us, here's the thing: every step of the way.
SPEAKER_01And that brings everything back to what we've been building.
SPEAKER_00God saves, God sustains, and the spirit is actively involved in that process. Romans chapter 8 and verse 14, Paul writes, For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
SPEAKER_01So, Jonathan, before we move forward, let's summarize what we've seen in this segment.
SPEAKER_00Again, folks, let us help you to remember that the Holy Spirit's work is not mysterious or disconnected from scripture.
SPEAKER_01No, it's clearly defined. He teaches, he reminds, he guides into truth, and he works through the word of God to shape and transform the believer.
SPEAKER_00And what I love about this, that means the Christian life is not about guessing what God wants.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. It's about understanding and applying what he has already revealed.
SPEAKER_00And that beautifully sets up the next
Cooperating With The Spirit Daily
SPEAKER_00question.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if the Spirit is working through truth, and he is, then how does that impact the way we actually live day to day?
SPEAKER_00And what I love about that question, Cliff, is it's actually a very practical question. If the Holy Spirit, as we said, is teaching and guiding and helping, what does that actually look like in our everyday life?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan, because this isn't just theology.
SPEAKER_00No, it's it's daily living. This is about how you're gonna wake up tomorrow and walk with God. And I think one of the first things uh this chapter this chapter helps us to see is this.
SPEAKER_01Jonathan, it helps us to see that Christian life is definitely not passive.
SPEAKER_00No, that's so true. The spirit helps, but that doesn't mean we just sit around and do nothing. No, it means we respond, we engage, we cooperate. And listen, folks, that's a very important balance. There's that beautiful word balance, right? Because some people they lean too far one way, like everything depends on them, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And others lean too far the other way, like they don't have to do anything at all, but the truth is right in the middle.
SPEAKER_00Again, folks, the spirit works and we respond to that work, and you see that uh, especially when it comes to growth, because growth doesn't just happen automatically, no, it happens as we take in truth and while we think on it, as we apply it, and the spirit is working through that process, helping us understand, helping us to remember, and here's the key helping us actually live it out, and that becomes especially important when we talk about sin. Because this is where a lot of Christians out there they really struggle.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes, they do, Jonathan, because they feel like they're constantly fighting those same battles over and over.
SPEAKER_00You know, we talked to Jack Wilkie about this, and and it's something you and I personally have have seen in our lives and others out there. The you you start to think, why am I still dealing with this same struggle?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and why am I still struggling with this?
SPEAKER_00And here's the thing, you start to feel like you're battling that alone, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, it can really feel overwhelming. But here's the truth you're never alone. Folks, the spirit is helping you in that fight. Look at Romans chapter 8 and verse 13.
SPEAKER_00The Bible says, For if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, what you will live, not by removing your responsibility, but by strengthening your ability, and that is such an important distinction. It sure is, Jonathan, because now you're not just relying on willpower, no, you are relying on God working in you through his word, and that changes how you approach the struggle, and it changes how you approach growth, and it even changes how you think about assurance. Because here's the deal now, instead of constantly questioning and second-guessing yourself, you begin to see evidence of God working in you. Think about Romans 8:16, where Paul writes, the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Folks, that's not perfection, but progress. And that matters. Oh, it matters because assurance is not just looking back, it's also seeing what God is doing in your life right now.
SPEAKER_01And the spirit plays a central role in that, folks, helping shape you, helping strengthen you, helping keeping you to completely start moving forward.
SPEAKER_00So, folks, before we move into the final segment, let's just pause and summarize what we've seen here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the presence of the Holy Spirit does not make the Christian life passive. Folks, it makes it possible.
SPEAKER_00And listen, we still respond, we still engage, we still pursue growth, but we do so with the help of the spirit, working through the word of God, and and that impacts everything from how we grow, yeah, to how we fight sin. To how we experience assurance.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that leads us to the final question of the chapter.
Moving Forward With Confidence
SPEAKER_01What does all of this mean for how we move forward with confidence?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Cliff, you know what, as this chapter beautifully draws to a close, everything really begins to just come together.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I totally agree, Jonathan. Because what we've seen is not just information about the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's a completely different way of understanding your Christian life.
SPEAKER_01It really is, Jonathan, because instead of seeing this life as something we have to hold together on our own.
SPEAKER_00No, we're beginning to see it as something God is actually actively helping us to live.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that changes everything.
SPEAKER_00It does. It changes how we think about growth, it changes how we think about struggle. It even changes, as we've said, how we think about assurance.
SPEAKER_01Because now, instead of constantly asking, Am I doing enough?
SPEAKER_00We begin asking, Am I trusting what God is doing in me?
SPEAKER_01And folks, that is a big shift.
SPEAKER_00It is because it takes the focus off of our ability and places it back on God's power, and that is where true confidence begins to grow. Not because we feel stronger, but because we realize we're not actually on our own. No, he has saved you, and he is helping you. Romans 8 26, right? Paul writes, likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses through his spirit every step of the way.
SPEAKER_01And that doesn't remove responsibility, folks, but it removes isolation.
SPEAKER_00You're not trying to figure this out by yourself, you're not fighting sin by yourself, no, and you're not trying to grow by yourself either. The beautiful truth is the helper is present, and that same helper is working. And listen, when you begin to understand that, the Christian life stops feeling impossible and starts becoming something you can walk through with confidence.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, not having perfect confidence now in yourself, but real confidence in God. And folks, that's the kind of assurance this book has been building towards. Not based on feelings, no, not based on performance either, but based on truth, and on the reality that God is actively at work in his people, like Romans 8:28 says, and we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good.
SPEAKER_00So, uh, as we close out chapter 8, uh, let's bring it all together clearly.
SPEAKER_01Folks, the Christian life was never meant to be lived alone.
SPEAKER_00God has given us the helper, the Holy Spirit is present, working through the word.
SPEAKER_01He's shaping, he's guiding, he's strengthening and helping us to grow.
SPEAKER_00And it's so beautiful that that means we don't have to move forward in fear. Instead, we move forward in confidence, not because of who we are, not at all, but because of what God is doing. And that's where this chapter leaves us.
SPEAKER_01And that's exactly where we need to be, Jonathan.
Final Thanks And Next Steps
SPEAKER_00Well, Cliff, as we come to the end of today's episode, uh again, we just want to thank everyone for spending uh a little bit of their time with a little bit of us.
SPEAKER_01Folks, listen, it really, really does mean a lot to Jonathan and I that you've chosen to study God's word with us here on Scripture Matters.
SPEAKER_00And as we've worked through here chapter eight entitled The Helper, listen, our hope is that one truth stands out clearly.
SPEAKER_01You were never ever meant to live the Christian life alone.
SPEAKER_00God has not only saved you, no, he has sustained you, and through his Holy Spirit, listen, folks, he is helping you every step of the way. So, folks, if you've been struggling, if you've been feeling overwhelmed, if you've been trying to carry this on your own, take a step back, pause and remember what we've said here today. You don't have to.
