Today's episode marks the beginning of Season 2 of the Scripture Matters Podcast, with co-hosts Jonathan Sanford & Cliff Thompson.
Freedom is one of the most celebrated words in American life, but it can also be one of the most misunderstood. As our nation prepares for Independence Day, we use that moment of gratitude as a doorway into a deeper, Bible-centered conversation about Christian freedom and the hidden bondage that can live inside a “free” life.
We talk honestly about how the world often defines freedom as self-rule, no limits, and total personal independence, and why that definition can quietly turn into a new kind of slavery. From John 8, we sit with Jesus’ blunt diagnosis: sin is not just a mistake or a bad habit, it is bondage. Pride, bitterness, lust, anger, fear, greed, and even the need for approval can take over a heart so slowly that we stop noticing the chains.
Then we move to the good news. Jesus doesn’t expose slavery to shame us; he exposes it to free us, and his promise still stands: “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” We connect that hope to Romans 6, Colossians 1:13-14, Galatians 5:1, and 1 Peter 2:16 to show what real spiritual freedom looks like in daily choices, worship, and home life. The Cost Behind Peace
SPEAKER_00Picture a field before sunrise.
SPEAKER_01The grass is wet from dew. The air is cold. And in the distance, the sound of a war is coming.
SPEAKER_00A man stands there with trembling hands.
SPEAKER_01Not because he doesn't believe in the cause.
SPEAKER_00But because he knows very well what this fight may cost him.
SPEAKER_01Behind him, his home.
SPEAKER_00A wife. Children. A family he loves more than his own life.
SPEAKER_01And in front of him, an enemy. An enemy that would gladly take from them what they may never fully understand. So he steps forward. Not because battle is easy. Not because sacrifice is small. But because some freedoms are too precious to surrender.
SPEAKER_00Years later, children may run across fields where men once fell.
SPEAKER_01And families may gather in peace where others once trembled.
SPEAKER_00Generations may laugh, eat, sing, and celebrate.
SPEAKER_01Without ever, ever hearing the cries.
SPEAKER_00Without ever seeing the bloodshed.
SPEAKER_01Without ever feeling the fear.
SPEAKER_00We can build our lives inside it.
SPEAKER_01And still forget what it cost.
SPEAKER_00But what if the greatest freedom is not the one celebrated with fireworks?
SPEAKER_01What if the deepest bondage is not the kind you can see?
SPEAKER_00What if a person can live in a free country and still not be free? And what if the freedom that we need the most could only be won by someone else?
Season Two Begins With Freedom

A Conversation Not A Lecture
SPEAKER_00Well, hello, good folks, and welcome back to the Scripture Matters Podcast.
SPEAKER_01And folks, we are so excited to welcome you to season number two.
SPEAKER_00We really are. And if you were with us throughout season one, you know that we spent that entire season walking through Jack Wilkie's book entitled You Are Saved, a Christian's Assurance.
SPEAKER_01And that was a tremendous blessing, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it really was, Cliff. I mean, we were blessed by the book. We were blessed by the conversations. And we were blessed by so many of you out there who watched or listened, shared, uh, commented, and encouraged us every step of the way.
SPEAKER_01And now, as we begin season two, we wanted to let you know that we are moving in a little different direction.
SPEAKER_00That's right. This season is going to be built around 13 topics. 13 topics that matter in the life of Christians.
SPEAKER_01Now, not random topics.
SPEAKER_00No, these are topics that reach down deep into our heart, into our homes, into our worship, into our relationships, and into our struggles.
SPEAKER_01And into our walk with God.
SPEAKER_00And we want, as we've always said, we want this season to feel like a conversation. We're not here for a formal lecture or a Bible class. This isn't a classroom setting. This is two good friends sitting together, talking through things that matter.
SPEAKER_01And we want you to be in the conversation with us.

Independence Day And Gratitude
SPEAKER_01So as we begin this brand new season, our first topic lines up pretty well with the week we are in, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it really does. Uh, this episode is releasing as our nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day 250 years.
SPEAKER_01A week when people naturally think about freedom.
SPEAKER_00And listen, good folks, we should be so grateful, so thankful for the freedoms that we enjoy. But today, listen, we want to use that word freedom as a doorway into a much deeper conversation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because scripture speaks about a freedom greater than anything this world can give you.
SPEAKER_00That's right. So today, as we begin season two, episode number one, as we said, our first uh episode is entitled Freedom Freedom Matters. That's right. Uh, and we want to begin, Cliff, by asking uh a very simple question. What kind of freedom did Jesus actually come to give?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because the word freedom gets used a lot, Jonathan, especially during a week like this.
SPEAKER_00It does. And before we even begin to talk about the freedom that Christ gives, you know, I thought we probably just need to spend a few moments here thinking uh about the freedom that people celebrate.
SPEAKER_01That's very true, Jonathan, because when people hear the word freedom this week, their minds probably go immediately to July 4th and to all the fixings, uh, the fireworks, uh, the family gathering, the grand old flag, cookouts, and all of the things that make up our 4th of July celebrations. And folks, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_00No, not at all, Cliff. And we ought to be thankful for the freedoms that we enjoy in this country because no doubt about it, freedom is a blessing. I know you agree with that, good folks. And many of the freedoms that we enjoy today, the reality is they came at a very extremely high cost many years ago.
SPEAKER_01That is something people can forget, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00It really is, Cliff. We can enjoy the benefits of freedom without always remembering or appreciating the sacrifice that made it possible.
SPEAKER_01And that was really the picture in the cold opening.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you think about it. Somebody fought, somebody sacrificed, somebody gave up their comfort, that their safety, and Cliff, in many cases, life itself, so that others could live in freedom.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and generations later, people could enjoy that freedom without ever stepping on the battlefield.
SPEAKER_00No, that is right. And they inherit something that they did not personally win, but they are still responsible for how they live in it. No, that's a good way to say it, Cliff, because you think about it. Freedom is not just something we celebrate, freedom is something that we are to steward.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's right, Jonathan. Because you can waste freedom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you can abuse freedom.
SPEAKER_01You can even take freedom for granted.
SPEAKER_00Oh, and you can even misunderstand what freedom actually is.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, unfortunately, that happens a lot.
When Freedom Becomes Bondage
SPEAKER_00Sadly, it does, because you know, think about it. Many people hear freedom and think, well, hey, that means I can just do whatever I want. Yeah, no boundaries, no restraint, no responsibility, just absolute personal independence.
SPEAKER_01But that is not really freedom, is it, Jonathan?
SPEAKER_00No, it's not. And that's one of the big things as you and I prepared for this that we wanted to establish early in this conversation. Freedom is not the same thing as throwing off every restraint.
SPEAKER_01Because, Jonathan, if you throw off every restraint, then a person can think that they can be free to choose something that might destroy them.
SPEAKER_00No, you're right. And when that happens, what looks like freedom on the front end can become bondage on the back end.
SPEAKER_01You know, Jonathan, that's a very powerful thought.
SPEAKER_00I think it is. And here's the reason why. Because not every open door leads to life, not every desire that a man has leads to joy. Not every choice that feels free actually makes a person free.
SPEAKER_01And that is where people can get food, isn't it, Jonathan?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because we live in a world, in a society that often defines freedom as self-rule. In other words, they say, I decide who I am, I decide what is right, I decide what makes me happy, and I decide where my life goes.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, I know that sounds like freedom to a lot of people.
SPEAKER_00It does, it really does, but scripture, scripture presses deeper than that. The Bible uh is not merely concerned with whether or not a person is free to make choices, the Bible is concerned with what those choices are doing to a person's soul.
SPEAKER_01Because the reality is that the soul can be free on the outside and still be bound on the inside.
SPEAKER_00No, that's exactly right. A person can live in a free country, enjoy all the civil freedoms that their country offers, make plenty of personal decisions, and still be held captive by something deeper.
SPEAKER_01That takes us right back to the question from the code opening, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00It does. So, what if the deepest bondage is not the kind that you can see?
SPEAKER_01What if a person can live in a free country and still not be free?
SPEAKER_00And that is where our Lord Jesus takes this conversation to a much deeper level, deeper than politics, deeper than national identity, and deeper than personal independence.
SPEAKER_01That's exactly right, Jonathan. He takes it to the soul.
SPEAKER_00And that's where we need to go next, really and truly, because before we can appreciate the freedoms that Jesus gives, man, we we got to be honest about the bondage that he came to
Jesus Names Sin As Slavery
SPEAKER_00break.
SPEAKER_01That's right, Jonathan. Because in John 8, Jesus is speaking to people who did not think of themselves as enslaved. And to be totally honest with you, folks, they pushed back against that ideal pretty quickly.
SPEAKER_00It's quite an amazing moment that many people forget about within the gospel. In John's Gospel, I would really encourage you to take out your Bibles here with us for just a moment. Check this out. John chapter 8, uh, around verse 33. John chapter 8 and verse 33, they said this we are Abraham's descendants and have never been in bondage to anyone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jonathan, that is a pretty interesting statement when you know Israel's history. I mean, when you study the Old Testament, think about it. You read about Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, and now in their own day, Rome. Jonathan, their history had plenty of bondage in it.
SPEAKER_00But here's the key. Spiritually, Cliff, these people did not see what Jesus was saying. And folks, if you are following along here with us, that is the key. Jesus was not mainly talking about political bondage, he was talking about spiritual bondage.
SPEAKER_01And that is why he says in John 8 34, most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave to sin.
SPEAKER_00That is one of the strongest statements in all of scripture. And it's one that we just need to let sit for just a moment. See, Jesus does not describe sin as merely a mistake or a weakness or hey, a bad habit, or a poor choice.
SPEAKER_01No, Jonathan, he doesn't. He calls it slavery.
SPEAKER_00And think about it, folks. That is where sin is so, so deceptive. Sin almost never introduces itself that way.
SPEAKER_01No, it usually introduces itself as freedom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it says, Hey, do what you want to do. Oh, follow your heart. Nobody can tell you how to live.
SPEAKER_01This will make you happy.
SPEAKER_00But over time, yeah, the thing a person thought that they were controlling actually starts controlling them.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, before long, the person who said, I can stop anytime I want realizes maybe they cannot.
SPEAKER_00I think you and I have heard people make that statement, sadly. And it's exactly what we're talking about here. That can show up in all kinds of ways. Think about pride. Pride can rule a person. Bitterness. Bitterness can absolutely rule a person. And then let's add to it things like lust, anger, greed, fear, worldliness, and even this is a big one, the need for approval. Those things can all at one point or another begin to take over your heart.
SPEAKER_01And sometimes people get so used to it that they do not even recognize the bondage anymore.
SPEAKER_00No, that's right, Cliff. Sin can become so normal that a person stops asking whether they are free. They just learn to kind of live um with the weight of it.
SPEAKER_01And that is why Jesus' words are both painful, Jonathan, as well as loving.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're painful because he's telling us the truth about our condition.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but Jonathan, they're loving because he does not leave us there.
SPEAKER_00No, you're exactly right. Because
Free Indeed Through The Son
SPEAKER_00in John chapter 8 and verse 36, Jesus says, Therefore, if the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
SPEAKER_01And that assures us that there is hope.
SPEAKER_00That there is good news. Listen, Jesus does not expose our slavery to sin so that he can shame us. Shame, shame, shame, right? No, he exposes the slavery so that he can free us.
SPEAKER_01And Paul says something very similar over in a book you and I are pretty familiar with, Jonathan. Romans chapter six.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Romans chapter six. It makes it clear that everybody serves somebody or something. We either present ourselves to sin or we present ourselves to God.
SPEAKER_01So, biblically speaking, freedom does not mean that nobody has influence over me.
SPEAKER_00No, biblical freedom means that sin no longer has the right to rule over me.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that is a major, major difference.
SPEAKER_00It really is. Think about another statement of the Apostle Paul. Romans chapter 6, verse 17 and 18 says, But God bet that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
SPEAKER_01And then he says, Jonathan, and having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Paul doesn't say, hey, you were slaves of sin, and now you're just free to live however you want.
SPEAKER_01No, Jonathan's absolutely certainly not. Paul says that we have been set free from sin. Why? So we can live for righteousness.
SPEAKER_00And that matters. It matters because sin never made us more of what God created us to be. No, sin wounded us, sin lowered us, sin brought death.
SPEAKER_01But Jesus gives life back.
SPEAKER_00He does. Amen. For that. And for you know, if there's any person out there watching or listening to this today who may feel like sin has a grip on them and it has had a grip on them for years and years, this is where the hope of the gospel becomes very personal.
SPEAKER_01Because the question's not, can I break these chains myself?
SPEAKER_00No, the question is please listen to this. Do I believe in my heart? Do I believe that Jesus is strong enough to break what I cannot break? And folks, he is. No, he absolutely is. If the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
SPEAKER_01Now, please understand that does not mean the Christian never struggles.
SPEAKER_00No, we we really dealt with that in season one. It doesn't mean that. It doesn't mean that temptation disappears, and it doesn't mean that old habits from your former life uh never try to pull you backwards.
SPEAKER_01But it does mean that sin is no longer our master.
SPEAKER_00And that's the big difference here. A Christian, yes, may still struggle with a sin, but he does not have to surrender to sin as Lord. Because Jesus is now his Lord. And that brings us to the wonderful next part of our conversation. Jesus
Moved Into Christ’s Kingdom
SPEAKER_00did not simply forgive us and then leave us standing in that same old kingdom.
SPEAKER_01No, sir.
SPEAKER_00He moved us, he transferred us out of darkness and into his kingdom.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that changes everything about how a Christian sees freedom.
SPEAKER_00It really does, Cliff. Now, let's think about Colossians chapter one. Colossians chapter one, verses 13 and 14. The apostle Paul writes to the church and says this that God has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of his son, of his love, in whom we Have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.
SPEAKER_01That is such a powerful picture, Jonathan, because Paul does not describe salvation as though God just simply opened a door and then left us standing there trying to figure out what to do next.
SPEAKER_00No, not at all. Paul says God delivered us and then he conveyed us. Okay. Again, delivered us, then conveyed us. He moved us, he brought us from one realm into another. That means very clearly, folks, that Christ did not leave us where he found us.
SPEAKER_01That is more than release.
SPEAKER_00It is relocation.
SPEAKER_01More than pardon.
SPEAKER_00It's a new citizenship.
SPEAKER_01More than escaping something.
SPEAKER_00It's being brought into someone's kingdom.
SPEAKER_01And that really matters, Jonathan, because a lot of people think freedom means nobody rules over me anymore.
SPEAKER_00Right. They think that. But listen, Christian freedom does not mean that we become our own king.
SPEAKER_01No, it means we now belong to the right king.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that word right is so important there. Exactly. And that's where the world's idea of freedom and the Bible's idea of freedom are often very different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the world says freedom means I answer to no one.
SPEAKER_00But scripture makes it very clear, good folks, that true freedom is found when we are brought under the rule of Christ.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, I know that may sound strange to some people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it may, but if I am ruling my own life apart from Christ, then I'm not really free. Uh I'm still, you know, going to be shaped by something. And those some things may be desires and fears and pride, or get this, your past. Yeah. Um, maybe the opinions of people about you, right? Something is still leading me.
SPEAKER_01You know, everybody follows something, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00No, you're exactly right, Cliff. And and the question is not whether I will have a master. The question is whether I will belong to the master who loved me enough to redeem me.
SPEAKER_01And that is exactly what Christ has done, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00Yes. He redeems us, he forgives us, he brings us into his kingdom. And once we understand that, freedom becomes so much more than just something we claim. It becomes something we learned to live in.
Learning To Live New Freedom
SPEAKER_01Jonathan, that reminds me of Galatians chapter 5 and verse 1, where Paul says, stand fast, therefore, in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.
SPEAKER_00And then he ends that with something that I don't want people to miss. He says, Do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
SPEAKER_01So there is a liberty Christ gives.
SPEAKER_00And there is a way that we are called to stand in it.
SPEAKER_01That is where this really becomes practical, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does. Because if Christ has brought me into his kingdom, then I have to learn to think like someone who belongs to Christ.
SPEAKER_01That changes how I see temptation.
SPEAKER_00It changes how I see my own choices.
SPEAKER_01Well, Jonathan, it changed how I see my purpose.
SPEAKER_00And I love this, it changes how we view our worship.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it changes even how I see my home, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00How I treat people.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I'm not just trying to avoid the old life.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm trying to learn how to live a new life.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that is a big difference.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, this is something that you and I have seen with many young Christians at Waters Road and other places throughout our life. The Christian life is not just don't go back, it's also walk forward with Christ.
SPEAKER_01And you know, Jonathan, Peter helps us with that too.
SPEAKER_00He does. First Peter chapter 2 and verse 16, Peter says that we are to live as free people, but not using liberty as a cover for evil.
SPEAKER_01So freedom is not a cover-up for sin.
SPEAKER_00No, sir. Freedom is the opportunity to finally live for God.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan, that gives freedom a purpose.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Christ did not give us freedom so that we could just drift, drifting aimlessly, a lot of people, right? No, he freed us so that we could belong to him, walk with him, serve him. And folks, don't forget this, reflect him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So when Christians think about freedom, we are not just thinking about what we were brought out of.
SPEAKER_00No, we're thinking about who we were brought to.
SPEAKER_01Jonathan, that is where the kingdom language really does matter.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it does, brother, because Colossians 1 does not leave us with an empty life. It gives us a king, it gives us a kingdom, re-redemption, uh, forgiveness, and a place to stand.
SPEAKER_01And that is the freedom that changes a life.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
Stewarding Freedom Every Day
SPEAKER_00And that brings us toward the close of this very first conversation in season number two. Because this is not just a July 4th topic. This is a question, Cliff, for every heart out there.
SPEAKER_01What am I doing with the freedom Christ has given me?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that is the question where we need to try to land this conversation today. Um, that may be the question, Cliff, if you think about it. That may be the question that every one of us out there just needs to sit with for a few moments today. Really dwell on it, really meditate upon it. Uh as we close out this conversation. Think about it. What am I doing with the freedom Christ has given me?
SPEAKER_01Because freedom in Christ is not just something to talk about, is it, Jonathan?
SPEAKER_00No, it is something that we are called to live. Both in our homes and in our hearts, in our choices and in our worship.
SPEAKER_01And Jonathan also in the way we remember who we belong to.
SPEAKER_00You hit the nail on the head there because the Christian life is not about drifting back toward the life that Christ rescued you out of.
SPEAKER_01No, Sir Jonathan, it's about walking forward with the King who rescued us.
SPEAKER_00And that freedom came at a cost.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the precious blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_00So, Cliff, as our nation prepares this weekend to celebrate independence 250 years, let us be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00But let's not forget the greater freedom found in Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_01Folks, a freedom that reaches far deeper than any nation can give you.
SPEAKER_00And a freedom that calls us to live differently every single day.
SPEAKER_01And that is why freedom matters.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it surely does. And as we begin uh here with season two of the Scripture Matters Podcast, man, Cliff, this is the kind of conversation that we are looking forward to having.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, conversation about things that really do matter to Christians.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, things that really do touch real life, things that reached all the way down to the heart. Yeah, things that bring us back to scripture.
