Hello, friends, and welcome back to Discover Your Personal Power, Midlife, Hormones, Metabolism, and Energy. My name is Peggy Moore, and I'm a registered nurse and functional medicine consultant and basically your body's translator for what's going on in midlife. Because let's be honest, your body has been doing things lately, and you're like, okay, this feels new. And maybe not so much in a good way. My goal here is simple to help you understand your biology so you stop fighting it and start working with it. Because midlife bodies aren't broken, they're just recalibrating. I want you to picture this. Your body's like a dance club. Everything is running smoothly, the music is steady, the rhythm makes sense, everyone knows the steps, and your metabolism is right on beat. Your gut is managing the floor like a pro, and your hormones are in sync. And then the music changes, but no one told you. Now let's bring in some modern food. Ultra-processed foods are designed to be super yummy, convenient, shelf stable forever. But behind the scenes, they're often low in fiber, high in refined sugars, full of refined oils, and packed with additives. And your body, it notices. Whole foods are like furniture that shows up already built. Your body's like perfect, got it, easy. Ultra-processed foods are like IKEA furniture with missing instructions, 47 tiny screws, one weird leftover piece, and a manual that makes zero sense. And so your metabolism is like, okay, we're gonna try our best here. And things end up a little crooked. And this is where things start to shift because now your metabolism is working overtime, trying to figure things out. And your gut is standing there like, I'm sorry, what exactly did you send down here? It's important to realize that your gut isn't just for digestion, it's the dance floor of your whole body. And it's also the security at the door. Its job is to decide what gets in and what stays out and handle anything that doesn't belong. About 70% of your immune system is hanging out in your gut. So when things go smoothly, the dance floor stays calm. But when ultra-processed foods show up, it's like letting a bunch of rambunctious, uninvited guests into the club. Nobody knows who they are, nobody knows what they're doing, security is overwhelmed, and now the whole place feels off. And that off feeling, that's inflammation. Not loud, not traumatic, just a slow, constant signal. Something's not quite right, something's off. Now let's zoom out a little bit. Ultra processed foods hit us fast, like spike, crash, repeat. So a couple hours later, you're like, ooh, why am I hungry again? Why do I need sugar immediately? Why is my brain buffering? Your body isn't broken, it's reacting to this roller coaster. Next, let's look at your gut microbiome or the internal team. Inside your gut, you have bacteria that rely on fiber, plants, and real food. That's their fuel. Ultra processed foods don't feed them so well. They're left feeling cranky. And over time, those good bacteria, those good internal workers, they start to struggle. The balance shifts and inflammation increases. And your body is like, why does everything feel harder all of a sudden? The important part to recognize is this isn't about one meal. This isn't about one snack. Your body is resilient. This is about patterns, what you do most of the time. Your body actually wants protein and fiber, healthy fats and nutrients for slower digestion. Foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, and quality protein. This is not about overhauling everything overnight. This is about shifting your environment. So let's upgrade. Instead of chips, try nuts. Instead of candy or sweet treats, try fruit. Let's add before we subtract. Start by adding vegetables, fibers, and real food to keep your body fueled and satiated. Your body will naturally start shifting. Keep meals simple: protein, plants, and fat. That's it. Watch out for liquid sugar. Sugary drinks are one of the fastest ways to overwhelm your system. Even reducing them slightly will help. And then set up an environment. If it's in your house, you'll eat it. So make your space supportive, not stressful. Your body isn't confused, it's responding to the music that you're playing. Right now, the music may be fast, chaotic, and unpredictable, and your body's just trying to keep up. But when you start giving it steady signals, consistent fuel, supporting patterns, the rhythm starts to come back. You don't need to be perfect. You don't need to cut everything out. You just need to support your body more consistently than you're stressing it. Because your body isn't broken. It's doing the best it can with what it's been given. And now you're learning how to give it something better. If this episode helped you connect the dots, make sure to hit that subscribe button and share with someone who's standing in their kitchen. Like, what am I even supposed to eat anymore? Because trust me, we've all been there. This is Peggy Moore with Discover Your Personal Power Midlife Edition. And I'll see you next time.
