You’ve been told your labs are “normal”…
So why do you still feel exhausted, foggy, and out of sync with your body?

In this episode of Discover Your Personal Power: Hormones, Metabolism & Midlife, Peggy Moore—Registered Nurse and Functional Medicine Practitioner—breaks down the early signs of insulin resistance that often show up years before blood sugar or A1C levels change.

If you’ve ever experienced:
 ✔ That 2–4PM energy crash
 ✔ Intense sugar cravings
 ✔ Brain fog after meals
 ✔ Waking up at 3AM
✔ Stubborn weight gain (especially in the midsection)

…your body may be sending signals—not failing.

This episode connects the dots between hormones, metabolism, stress, and blood sugar, helping you understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.

💡 You’ll learn:
 • What insulin actually does in your body
 • Why “normal labs” don’t always mean optimal health
 • Early warning signs of metabolic dysfunction
 • Simple, foundational steps to support your metabolism

Your body isn’t broken—it’s communicating.
And when you understand the signals, you can start working with your body instead of against it.

Hi, friends, and welcome back to Discover Your Personal Power, Hormones, Metabolism, and Midlife. My name is Peggy Moore, and I'm a registered nurse and functional medicine consultant and basically your go-to translator for what your body is trying to say, especially when it feels like it's speaking a completely different language in midlife. I help midlife women understand what's actually happening in their bodies so they can restore energy, balance their metabolism, and feel like themselves again. Because most of the time, you don't need more discipline. You need better information. My goal with this show is to help you understand your biology so you can stop fighting your body and finally start working with it. So you can feel clear, confident, and back in control. And yes, I'll handle the research. No late night Google Spirals required over here. So here's something I've noticed. Most women are waiting for their laps to tell them that something is wrong. But meanwhile, their body's been dropping hints for years. Subtle ones, easy to miss ones, like your body sending polite emails that eventually turn into all caps in the subject lines. Today we're talking about the early signs of insulin resistance, the ones that nobody talks about. Because it doesn't really start with diabetes. It actually starts with patterns. And if you can catch them early enough, you can actually change the direction. So let's start with number one, the classic. That 2 to 4 p.m. afternoon crash. You're sitting there like, why do I feel like I need a nap, a snack, and a personality reset? Here's what's really happening: your blood sugar goes up after you eat and your body sends out insulin, but then it drops a little too fast and your brain is like, we're in danger. Get sugar. And it's basically like your energy is on a roller coaster and your body didn't sign the waiver. Number two, cravings. Let's talk about cravings. Not the hmm, chocolate sounds nice kind of craving. I mean, if I don't eat something sweet right now, I might actually lose it. And that's not personality flaw. That's actually chemistry. Your brain doesn't interpret low blood sugar as, okay, let's just wait for dinner. It interprets it as we're not okay, we need to fix this immediately. So it sends adrenaline and suddenly you're negotiating with cookies like it's a business deal. Three, that brain fog that comes after meals. So have you ever eaten a meal and then 20 minutes later you feel like I should not be operating heavy machinery right now? That foggy, slow, almost sleepy feeling, that your brain's responding to those blood sugar swings. Your brain is actually one of the most metabolic, sensitive organs that you have. So when glucose is up and down and up and down, your brain is like, ugh, we're not thinking clearly today. Let's circle back tomorrow. Number four, and here's one that most people don't connect skin tags or darker patches around the neck. Those are not random. Insulin is actually a growth hormone. So when it's elevated over time, your skin actually responds. It's like your body leaving little sticky notes, like, hey, something's going on here. Then number five, your labs are normal, but you don't feel normal. Sometimes we sense that something is wrong. And so we go to our doctor, they run the standard labs, and then the doctor says, Your labs look fine. You're okay. And now this is where it gets frustrating because you don't feel okay. And here's the truth insulin resistance can be developing for years before glucose actually changes. It's like your check engine light isn't on, but your car is making noise and you know something's not right. Your body feels it first. Number six, the waking up at 2 to 4 a.m. So let's talk about the 3 a.m. wake up. You're sleeping, everything is fine, and then suddenly you're wide awake, your brain is fully online, thinking about things from 2007. And sometimes that's not anxiety, it's actually your blood sugar dropping overnight, and then your body releasing cortisol to bring it back up. And then, congratulations, you're now awake for the rest of the day. Number seven, and this one hits deep. You're eating well, you're exercising, and your body's like, we're just gonna hold on to this weight for safety's sake. Because insulin's job is to store for later use. And when insulin stays elevated, fat burning gets turned down. And this isn't about effort, it's about fat signaling. And then number eight, my all-time favorite, the midsection shift. You gain maybe five to eight pounds, but suddenly your body looks different. That's because visceral fat, especially in the belly, is very responsive to insulin. It's like your body changed its storage strategy overnight. But here's the good news. This is not a diagnosis, this is not a failure, and this is not a reason to panic. This is information. And information gives you power because insulin resistance doesn't happen overnight. It builds slowly, which means it can be shifted and shifted early. So let's talk about what actually works. And no, you don't need to go to the extreme. Don't do a detox. You don't need to start cutting everything out, no starting over on Monday. We just go back to the basics. You know, protein at breakfast, strength training a couple times a week, walking after meals, even for just 10 minutes, better sleep rhythms, less ultra-processed foods, and supporting the nervous system. Not terribly sexy, but very effective. If you're listening to this and thinking, okay, this is me, but my laps are still normal, you're not imagining it. Remember, your body is not failing you. It's communicating. It's just been speaking quietly, and now it's starting to get a little louder. Nothing is broken. The signals just need to be understood. If today helped you connect the dots between stress, sleep, hormones, and belly fat, hit like and subscribe, and feel free to leave a comment. I would love to know what you'd like to hear about next. And share this with a friend who needs to hear. Us midlife women are in this together. Let's support one another. See you in the next episode.
