Best Vitamins for Perimenopause: What Actually Matters

Have you ever looked inside your supplement cabinet and wondered if you're taking enough vitamins to qualify as a small pharmacy?

If so, you're not alone.

The internet is full of promises that the right gummy, powder, tea, or capsule will magically balance your hormones, melt belly fat, fix your cortisol, boost your metabolism, and solve every symptom of perimenopause.

But what if the problem isn't that you're missing the perfect supplement?

What if your body is actually asking for a different kind of support?

In this episode, we're cutting through the noise and discussing the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that actually matter during perimenopause and menopause—and why supplements should support your health, not replace the foundations of it.

You'll learn why some nutrients deserve "main character energy" in midlife, how stress impacts nutrient depletion, and why your body cannot supplement its way out of poor sleep, chronic stress, blood sugar chaos, or nervous system overload.

In This Episode You'll Learn:

✅ Why perimenopause is a hormonal transition—not a supplement deficiency

✅ The difference between support and symptom-chasing

✅ Why magnesium is one of the MVPs of midlife

✅ How Vitamin D influences mood, immunity, muscle health, and inflammation

✅ Why testing matters before adding supplements

✅ The role omega-3 fats play in inflammation, brain health, and metabolism

✅ Signs you may be low in B vitamins, especially B12

✅ Why creatine may be one of the most underrated supplements for women over 40

✅ How muscle protects metabolism, blood sugar, strength, and longevity

✅ Why protein, sleep, and blood sugar balance matter more than another supplement stack

Key Takeaway

Perimenopause doesn't automatically require:

❌ 14 supplements

❌ Detox teas

❌ Fat-burning gummies

❌ Adrenal miracle powders

❌ Random internet protocols

Your hormones aren't broken.

They're shifting.

And while targeted supplements can be incredibly helpful, they work best when they're built on a strong foundation of sleep, nourishment, movement, stress support, and blood sugar stability.

Remember:

Supplements fill gaps. They do not replace foundations.

SPEAKER_00

Hi friends. A few years ago, I found myself standing in the kitchen staring at a cabinet full of supplements. I had bottles for sleep, bottles for stress, bottles for energy, bottles for hormones, and bottles for inflammation. At one point, I joked that if my house ever got robbed, the thieves were gonna think I ran a small pharmacy. And yet I was still exhausted, still waking up at 3 a.m., still struggling with stress. And that's when I realized I wasn't dealing with a supplement deficiency. I was dealing with a support deficiency. If you've spent more than seven minutes on TikTok, Facebook Reels, or Instagram lately, chances are you've seen advertisements for some kind of supplement that promise to balance your hormones, melt belly fat, fix your cortisol, and boost your metabolism. And honestly, when you're dealing with poor sleep, brain fog, belly fat changes, exhaustion, or feeling like your nervous system has become a tiny raccoon with anger issues, it really is tempting to believe that one more magic gummy or powder or tea or capsule is going to fix everything. Because the question is not, but it's important to realize that the question is not what supplement fixes this? The better question is what does my body need more support with right now? Because supplements are support, not magic. Welcome back to Hormones, Metabolism, and Midlife. My name is Peggy Moore, and I'm a registered nurse and functional medicine consultant and basically a translator for what your body is doing right now in midlife. And today we're talking about vitamins, supplements, hormones, and why the internet has made perimenopause and menopause feel like you need a second mortgage just to survive it. Seriously, you could type into Google best vitamins for perimenopause, and suddenly the internet acts like your hormones are collapsing because you forgot to buy moon dust, adrenal sparkle powder, 17 times of magnesium harvested under the full moon, and $94 of hormone gummies that taste like sadness and artificial watermelon. And honestly, it's no wonder women get overwhelmed. So today we're gonna simplify all this because perimenopause at menopause is not a supplement deficiency, it's a hormonal transition. And while certain nutrients absolutely matter, the goal is not throwing random pills at your body and hoping one will fix everything. The goal is understanding what system the body needs support with. And honestly, a lot of midlife women are taking all kinds of supplements, yet they're still undereating protein, sleeping less than five hours, stressed out constantly, surviving on caffeine, and then wondering why nothing's working. Your body can supplement its way out of chaos. Now, that being said, there are certain nutrients that matter more than others in midlife. And these are what I think of as foundational players. They're not trendy, they're not glamorous, they're not TikTok famous, but they're deeply supportive. And so let's talk about it. Let's talk about the nutrients that actually deserve main character energy in midlife. These are the nutrients midlife women are low in, especially under stress. Number one is magnesium. So magnesium is honestly one of the MVPs of midlife. Magnesium helps support sleep, muscle relaxation, stress regulation, blood sugar, and nervous system calmness. Basically, magnesium is like the exhausted kindergarten teacher inside your body trying to keep everyone calm and sitting in their assigned seats. And many women run low on it because stress tends to burn through magnesium. Processed foods contain little to none of it, and poor sleep worsens depletion. So women often feel tense and anxious, restless, crampy, wired, but tired. And no, magnesium is not a magic pill. It does not fix all the hormones, but it does help support the systems that hormones depend on. You can get magnesium from food, pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, dark chocolate, black beans, avocado, and cheese seeds. Honestly, this is one of the reasons midlife women sometimes crave chocolate during stressful times in life. Your body may be actually looking for magnesium support. Although sadly, your body usually asks for family-sized candy alotional support chocolate instead of pumpkin seeds. Next is vitamin D. Vitamin D is technically more like a hormone than a vitamin. And this matters because vitamin D helps to support immune function, mood, muscle health, bone health, and inflammation regulation. And honestly, a lot of women are low because our modern life has turned us into indoor house plants. We work inside, we drive inside, we scroll inside, we netflick inside. Meanwhile, our ancestors were outside chasing chickens and carrying water buckets. So now the important note is more is not always better. And this is why testing matters. Mega dosing random supplements because TikTok told you to is not a medical strategy. And for that matter, I'm a nurse and a functional medicine consultant, but I am not your doctor, your provider. Before you start taking any new supplements, you should consult with your doctor to find out what your unique needs are. But back to vitamin D. You can support vitamin D naturally through sunlight exposure. We need sunlight exposure, especially in the mornings. You can get it from salmon, sardines, egg yolks, cod liver oil, and some fortified dairy alternatives. But honestly, sometimes women don't need another supplement stack. They just may need to get outside, get more sunlight, movement, nourishment, and that nervous system support. Once those foundations are supported, there's also a few nutrients that can be really helpful depending on the woman, her symptoms, and her labs and lifestyle. Omega-3s, we've all heard of omega 3s. They help support inflammation balance, brain health, mood, heart health, and metabolic health. And honestly, most modern diets are way more inflammatory than our bodies were designed for. All the processed food, anything that comes in bags or boxes, are made mostly in labs and not coming straight from the ground with the nutrients that our body needs. A lot of women are basically running their nervous systems on stress, seed oils, caffeine, and a leftover granola bar that's been in their purse for a month. Think of omega-3s like tiny firefighters helping to calm inflammation in the body and the brain. You can get omega-3s from salmon, sardines, mackerel, chia seeds, flax seeds, and walnuts. Next is those B vitamins. B vitamins, especially B12, help support brain function, energy, nerve, and red blood cells. And as women age, absorption of B vitamins can decrease, especially if you experience things like acid reflux, have some gut issues, are taking certain kinds of medications and stress. Low B12 can feel like brain fog, exhaustion, poor memory, or just feeling mentally offline, which is why testing matters here too. But foods rich in B vitamins include things like eggs, meat, fish, leafy greens, beans, nutritional yeast, and dairy or dairy alternatives. B vitamins are basically the spark plugs for energy production. And without them, your body starts functioning like an old flick phone on a night with 9% battery. And the last one I want to just touch on is creatine. And this may surprise you because creatine has traditionally been thought of as a gym bro kind of powder. But women are finally realizing that creatine supports way more than just muscles. Emerging research suggests that it helps with muscle preservation, brain energy, strength, recovery, and cognitive performance. And honestly, midlife women need that. They need muscle. Muscle is metabolic protection. It helps with blood sugar, metabolism, strength, longevity, stability. We're not trying to become the tiny frail grandma who can't open the pickle jar someday. We're trying to become strong women with good brains, good bones, and enough muscle to carry our own Costco groceries up three flights of stairs if we need to. Now, creatin can be supplemental, but it's also naturally found in some foods like red meats, salmon, tuna, and poultry. And honestly, this is another reason strength training and adequate protein matter so much in midlife. We're trying to build resilient, strong bodies, not survive on iced coffee and good vibes forever. So here's where I need to lovingly say this: perimenopause and menopause does not actually require 14 supplements, detox teas, adrenal miracle powders, and extensive hormone kits. Your hormones are not broken, they're just shifting. It's a transition. And sometimes women painted by supplements like they're preparing for the apocalypse. But the goal strategy is support, not supplemental chaos. Before adding piles of supplements, ask yourself are you eating enough protein? Are you eating enough fiber? Are you getting minerals from your food? Are you sleeping? Hydrating? Are you stabilizing your blood sugar throughout the day with three steady meals? Because supplements are there to fill the gaps, not replace the foundations. You can't out-supplement chronic stress, poor sleep, undereating, and blood sugar chaos. The body still needs nourishment. Here's kind of the order I like to think about things. Stabilize that blood sugar. Make sure that your body knows that it is going to get stable energy throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, three to four hours apart. And that meal should contain protein, a healthy fat, and a good amount of fiber to help give your body what it needs to take it through the next part of the day. That stabilizes your blood sugar and gives you the energy that you need. Stabilize sleep, making sure that you're getting the rest and restoration that your body needs. Preserving muscle, correct deficiencies, and then target supplements only if they're needed. That's it. Because layering 17 supplements onto an exhausted, stressed-out body usually just creates expensive pee. The body loves balance, and perimenopause and menopause is about recalibrating. Your body is changing how it responds to stress, sleep, hormones, and your metabolism. And vitamins don't fix hormones, but they will support the systems that your hormones depend on. As the body gets supported, your sleep will improve, energy will stabilize, resilience improves, and mood steadies. That's the goal. Midlife does not mean your body's broken or falling apart. It means your body's asking for a different kind of support than it needed previously.
