Disordered eating vs Eating Disorders

Disordered Eating

  • Refers to unhealthy eating behaviors and concerns about body image, often driven by societal pressure to lose weight or maintain a certain physique
  • Common examples include:
    • Dieting and restrictive eating
    • Self-induced vomiting, binge eating, and laxative abuse (less frequent but still part of the spectrum)
  • Can be a normal response to societal pressures, but it can also be a precursor to developing an eating disorder

Eating Disorder

  • A clinical diagnosis characterized by severe and persistent disturbances in eating behavior, body image, and weight
  • Examples include:
    • Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
    • Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
    • Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
    • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
  • Requires professional treatment and support to address the underlying psychological and emotional issues
