Shift the Field
Short insights from inside Shift the Field- a neurophysiological programme built for people who've tried to think, research and analyse their way out of pain, tension and anxiety. But still feel trapped or stuck. Different issues. Same Mechanism. I'm AMD, founder of AMDtherapie and creator of Shift the Field.

In this episode we uncover why fighting pain is not the answer and
what actually is.
Pain is an output. Protection is the response.
We cannot keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.
So we don't target pain per se, we change the internal conditions that cause the response. Once we change those, the system no longer has the same input and protection is no longer necessary.

Hi, I'm AMD from AMD Therapy and welcome to another episode of Shift the Field. So last episode finished with what feels like an impossible question. If fighting pain isn't the answer, then what is? Because if you're living with pain every day, surely the obvious thing to do is to get rid of the pain. Except that's exactly where so many people become stuck. Pain becomes the thing the entire day revolves around. Can I sit? Can I walk? Can I lift? Is it better? Is it worse? Every decision starts being made in relation to pain, and understandably so, but the system never gets asked a different question. Here's the distinction. Pain isn't making decisions, the system is. Pain is simply one of the ways that decision becomes visible. That's very different because if protection is the decision, then changing pain isn't actually where the work starts. Changing what the system is responding to is. Think about it for a moment. Your body is responding all day long. It responds to certainty, uncertainty, familiarity, threat. It responds before you've even consciously aware of it. And that's what bodies do as well. The question isn't whether your body is responding, the question is what is it responding to? Because responses aren't fixed, they're conditional. And if you change the conditions, then the response begins to change too. That's why trying harder to override pain often achieves very little. The system simply interprets that effort as more evidence that protection is still required. And that's where no pain, no gain fails as a method because you're simply confirming to the system what it already knew. So instead of arguing with pain, shift the field quietly starts somewhere else. It begins influencing the conditions the system is using to make its decisions, not by pretending everything is safe or not waiting for perfect safety, otherwise no one would make a move. Not by ignoring symptoms either, or by avoiding anything, and it's not positive thinking or pain management, but steadily changing the internal environment the system is responding to. Because once those conditions begin to change, protection no longer has the same job to do. And when protection changes, pain changes with it. Not because pain was targeted per se, but because the reason for producing it has started to disappear. That's why the goal isn't to fight the output, it's to influence the conditions that created the output in the first place. And that's where Shift the Field begins. Thank you for listening.
