The Eat for Endurance Podcast
The Eat for Endurance Podcast demonstrates the many different ways that athletes fuel themselves, while also highlighting the challenges that so many active people have with their nutrition in real life. Host Claire Shorenstein (MS RD CSSD) aims to inspire and educate listeners through Athlete Nutrition Profiles, aka the "nutrition stories" of recreational and professional athletes, and interviews with fellow sports dietitians on important nutrition topics.

Welcome to Episode 43 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, where I interview Sports Dietitian Lauren Antonucci, RDN, CSSD, CDE, CDN, on Nutrition for Masters Athletes.
Lauren was a guest on my show back in 2019 to discuss fueling young athletes, so when I learned that she was in the midst of writing a book on masters athletes (anyone 35 and above, in case you’re wondering), I knew that would be the topic of our next interview! Her book “High Performance Nutrition for Masters Athletes” is finally here, and it’s a fantastic resource on this important topic, both for Masters and non-Masters Athletes.
Lauren is the Director and Owner of Nutrition Energy, a Manhattan-based private practice. She is a specialist in Sports Dietetics, a Certified Diabetes Educator, a Mom of 3, and is herself a longtime athlete, having completed 13 marathons, 3 Ironman triathlons, and countless other running and triathlon races.
I have worked with Lauren for many years, and she has been a wonderful mentor to me as I navigated my own journey into Sports Dietetics, so I’m particularly excited to share our discussion and insights with you all.
Here are some of the things that we cover in this episode:
- What you used to be able to “get away with” as a younger athlete most likely is no longer serving you
- Key nutrition changes to make as we age, supported by research
- Carbs - they’re SO important to health and performance, and yet many athletes struggle to consume enough
- Protein - we are not consuming enough as we get older, both post-workout and throughout the day, and why it is so essential to correct this
- Hydration / thirst response changes as we age
- Training the gut
- Eating disorders and under fueling
- Chronic disease among older athletes
If you're not yet in this age category (lucky you!), I promise that you will still get a lot out of this episode.
Thank you Lauren for sharing your vast knowledge on this topic! And congrats again on publishing your book - link below for anyone who is interested in purchasing it.
FYI - we had some occasional sound / volume issues on this episode that I was unable to fix. My apologies - hopefully it doesn't take away from the listening experience too much!
