In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener question about hormone replacement therapy and hair loss/hair growth in women in their 50's. Dr. Mistry points out that knowing why a person is seeking hormone replacement is very important in determining the proper treatment plan for them. Many women complain of perimenopause or post-menopause symptoms, which can include low energy, changes to their skin, hair, and nails, low sex drive, and a substantial decrease in vaginal moisture leading to vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse. What many women don't know is that testosterone is a driver of sex drive in both men and women, so testosterone replacement therapy can help women suffering from low libido as well. In terms of dose, women typically require a much lower dose of testosterone than men. It is rare that women receiving pellet therapy will develop hair growth in undesirable places, but if they are using cream, it is wise to apply it to the calf, which is generally shaved anyway. Moreover, Dr. Mistry reminds women that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy are myriad--they should not be deterred by fears about hair loss or growth.
