Elmer T. Lee: Tasting the Legacy of a Bourbon Pioneer
The legacy of Elmer T. Lee lives on through his namesake single barrel bourbon, where we compare the newest 2025 release with a 2019 bottle to explore how this iconic whiskey maintains its high standards over time.
• Elmer T. Lee was Buffalo Trace's fourth master distiller who revolutionized bourbon by launching Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon
• The 2025 Elmer T. Lee delivers exceptional nose with caramel, vanilla, and oak notes, scoring 15/18 in our barrel bottle breakdown
• Comparing 2019 vs 2025 releases shows the newer bottle has more pronounced flavors while the older release has mellowed into an easier-drinking experience
• Elmer sought bourbon with vanilla notes, smooth taste, and no harsh aftertaste – qualities still present in today's releases
• At 90 proof, Elmer T. Lee drinks well above its proof point with excellent viscosity and flavor complexity
• Both releases showcase classic bourbon characteristics with the 2025 bringing more vibrant, attention-commanding flavors
Join us on our Kentucky distillery tour as we visit Maker's Mark and Jack Daniel's in the coming days, with live updates planned throughout the journey.
The enduring legacy of bourbon pioneer Elmer T. Lee takes center stage as we crack open the new 2025 release of his namesake single barrel bourbon. This exploration celebrates the man who revolutionized the industry by introducing Blanton's in 1984 as the first modern single barrel bourbon brand.
The 2025 Elmer T. Lee immediately impresses with an exceptional nose that evokes vintage, dusty bourbons—rich caramel, perfect vanilla balance, and just the right amount of oak with zero ethanol burn. At 90 proof, this bourbon drinks well above its strength, offering remarkable complexity and a viscosity that creates beautiful, long-lasting legs in the glass. The flavor profile delivers everything Elmer himself sought when selecting barrels: pronounced vanilla-forward notes, smooth mouthfeel, and a balanced finish without harsh burn.
What makes this tasting particularly fascinating is the side-by-side comparison with a 2019 bottle. While both expressions showcase the classic Elmer T. Lee character, the 2025 release presents more vibrant, attention-commanding flavors, while the 2019 has mellowed into an exceptionally smooth, approachable pour. This comparison highlights the subtle variations between single barrels selected years apart, while confirming the consistent quality standards established by the master distiller himself.
Through rare interview footage, we hear Elmer describe his selection process in his own words, providing invaluable context for appreciating his bourbon legacy. For anyone fortunate enough to secure a bottle at its retail price of approximately $80, this expression delivers exceptional value and a direct connection to bourbon history. Whether you're new to bourbon or a seasoned enthusiast, Elmer T. Lee continues to represent everything special about Kentucky's native spirit.

But, uh, however you listen to us, remember, like, listen, comment, subscribe and leave good feedback. We greatly appreciate that. Uh, that's how we get to be the 16th largest uh whiskey podcast in the world. So that I was. I was impressed to be 16, so I didn't think that for one second that we're at that point. But I know that we do a lot on YouTube. We do a lot on Facebook. Great to have everybody here Tonight is Elmer T Lee.
Speaker 1:This is our podcast. We will be doing the barrel bottle breakdown of it coming up real soon. I'm not going to hang around long tonight. We're going to get this. We're going to get this through in a timely manner. I sometimes will drag on or whatnot, but you know, you know that's just how it goes. Well, this is March Madness. Our last podcast was based off that.
Speaker 1:You've got Irish whiskey coming out in the state of Ohio. It's been fantastic. They had an Irish whiskey event Plus. Then you've got releases from the distilleries and this past Tuesday I picked up the newest release of Elmer T Lee. I'm going to open that up tonight and we're going to do the barrel, the bottle breakdown, and then also I have the 2019 and that's all I had left. So that's why I chose to pick up that Elmer T Lee, because I really didn't have it. Now I got another bottle, very excited for that.
Speaker 1:But in the meantime I'm going to look this irish whiskey that I picked up. Uh, it is the whistler, and the whistler, uh, comes out with stuff and they finish. This one was ohio liquor, barbados rum, cast 12, eight aged it's 12 year and 29 month old irish whiskey in x bourbon barrels. Uh, it's a single cask and um, let's see, we got 61, 100 and the. The proof is really up there because it's 61.34, so that's 121.68 proof on Irish whiskey. So the Whistler, let's see, the Whistler Irish single cask was hand-selected by and bottled for Ohio liquor. Only A select few casks of fantastic quality can be considered for our single cast program.
Speaker 1:Set aside, cast that, wow, emboss, a deep and rich flavor profile making it a truly unique irish whiskey of high ice quality. I've never heard of emboss, but that's what it says. So, anyways, that's what it is. Uh, the whistler sit and whistle a while is what it says. Um, bone and distillery company meath ireland imported. So we got, you know, they went over and picked that up and we are talking, uh, high proof irish whiskey.
Speaker 1:And I'm gonna give this baby a little taste to let you all know how good it is. I love rum, cask anything. So where the Irish whiskey, you know it's a single malt. So into Irish, you know, first it's in bourbon barrels and then then it's in finished in Barbados barrels. So I'll tell you what this one is like. Man, that's good.
Speaker 1:One of the things about, in my opinion, the rum comes across unbelievable with the single malt. So the rum cast finish, and the reason why I got that bottle was because it's so delicious. The vanillas from the rum just add into the irish whiskey and then the proof is like imbue, no, it was in. I'm telling you walker, oh, look at it again, it is in. Our Can be reconsidered, for I am BUS. No, i-m-b-u-e, is that what you came up with? I-m-b-u-e, i-m-b-u-e. So it's not M-B-U, it's M-B-U. So there we go. So I would say it's delicious, this one, if you ever come across this one or any kind of Irish whiskey in a rum cask finish.
Speaker 1:The rum works a little bit better with the Irish whiskey because they're like bourbon is a lot bigger taste. So you add the rum. So the rum doesn't quite do what it does to the Irish. You know the cask, the um, the, the single malt, the malt it's just a malt, it's a malt whiskey Hmm, highly recommend, delicious, almost like candy.
Speaker 1:All right, so one thing I wanted to talk about quickly I was asked and I said I would do it is that the Bourbon Capital Academy in Bardstown, kentucky, is starting up classes March 15th. It's a great way to start your bourbon trail experience in Bardstown. You can go to their website and just look up the Bourerman Capital Academy and you can see all the different classes they have scheduled and the classes that they're going to have coming up. It's in the Brendiamo Penthouse where the Kentucky Bourbon Festival offices are Fantastic facility and the classes are. If you're starting out in bourbon, this is the thing to do Start here and then start the bourbon trail. So I would highly recommend the Bourbon Capital Academy. So check that out everybody. I did that because I know Tracy Green, who's part of that, and definitely it's a good and cool way to experience Kentucky and bourbon there's no doubt about it and learn a little bit. They've got classes for beginners and intermediate and experts. They've got something for everybody. So there you go.
Speaker 1:I'm not a fan of rum, finished bourbon or whiskey. I will tell you this, though, thomas, you might not be a fan, but on this one, this one, the rum, vanilla candy kind of thing, and the way that it mixes, it's much I'm. I do like some rum cast bourbons, uh, but this is, this is on a different level. You might like this one, that's for sure. Um, what's up I love. Thank you, big, big whitey. Uh, thanks for uh checking out the channel and thanks for commenting what you sipping on tonight. Um, I'm about to go.
Speaker 1:Elmer T Lee. So here we go. Interesting, how does I? It's got a thing on the bottom. I thought I took them all off, but I did not. That one made it through. That's okay, all right. So what I'm going to do? I've got a little couple things for everybody.
Speaker 1:Let's see about Elmer T Lee. First, let's pull up the iPad iPad time. It's the iPad time, elmer T Lee. I've got that right there. I've got that right there. There we go, all right.
Speaker 1:So let's see, he was the master distiller at Buffalo Trace. He was the fourth one and master distiller emeritus after his retirement in 1985. He was born in Peaks Mill, kentucky. This is Elmer T Lee in 1919. He is known for launching Blanton's in 1984, the first modern bourbon brand marketed as a single barrel marketed as a single barrel. He worked with albert blanton and uh, albert used to bring and catch single barrel, get single barrels pulled out for guests and and whatnot. And so in 1984 elmer wanted to pay tribute to colonel blanton and he basically started pulling barrels from where Colonel Blanton loved the warehouse H it's metal and he pulled them specifically from where Albert Blanton did. That's great, randy, that you picked up your MSRP. Are you in Ohio? Because Ohio kind of killed it on Tuesday. That's where I got my newest one too. He's president of the Kentucky Distillery credited the premium market that Mr Lee pioneered as a major factor in the bourbon industry's turnaround in the last decade. Sales reached 30 million gallons in 2012 for the first time since 1973.
Speaker 1:All right, he entered the University of Kentucky but withdrew to volunteer for the Army in World War II. He served as a radar bombardier in a B-29 bomber based in Guam. Mr Lee returned to the university after the war to get his degree and began working at the distillery as a maintenance engineer when, under a different owner, it was called the George T Stagg Distillery at the time. He was promoted to plant superintendent in 1966 and to plant manager in 1969 and given the title Master Distiller in the early 1980s, after his retirement at Buffalo Trace.
Speaker 1:Retirement, buffalo trace honored mr lee with a single barrel brand of his own, the elmer t lee kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottled from barrels. He continued selecting himself into the 90s. The label won gold medals in 2013 at both the los angeles international wine and spirits Competition and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The journal Whiskey Advocate described its flavor as elegant and complex. Lee was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Fall of Fame in 2001 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from both Whiskey Advocate in 2002 and Whiskey Magazine in 2012. Lee died in Frankfort, kentucky, in 2013 at the age of 93.
Speaker 1:What a life, especially when you're considering he was in the distilling industry. You know, some people say that whiskey is hard on your body and other people say that whiskey is good for you. Connected, all of Connecticut, of all states. Nice, he picked it up in Connecticut. That's excellent. I think this is an actual tribute to them, making enough that everybody's starting to get some. So that's kind of cool to do that Now. I do have a quick share screen and I have it. Let's see if I can do it. Share my share, share, let's see if I got it up. All right, that's it. Let's bring that up. Share, and this is the start of an interview that was done, done and I'll play it for a little bit. This is Elmer.
Speaker 3:T Lee. I worked here during the spring breaks and the summer vacations from the university. I worked here for a few weeks and got to know the plant and they got to know me. So when I graduated I was offered a job here and I went to work here in 1949.
Speaker 1:Tell me a little bit more about the Elmer T Lee brand.
Speaker 3:As you said earlier, that was established some years ago upon your retirement, is that not?
Speaker 1:true In 1986.
Speaker 3:Tell me a bit about the process of selection.
Speaker 1:You do that. Tell me what you're looking for.
Speaker 3:I'm looking for what I consider to be the proper taste for bourbon. It's going to have the characteristics that good bourbon has. It's going to have vanilla-type taste. It's going to have a smooth taste to the palate. It's going to have some vanilla I mentioned that Vanilla taste to it and it's just a good smooth bourbon flavor to it. It's highly flavored not highly flavored, but it's got a good flavor to it and it don't have an aftertaste burn to it.
Speaker 1:Have a aftertaste burn to it, that's the things I guard against when I'm tasting it. There you go. That's his selection thing. And let's see, I should be able to. How can I do this? Where do you go to stop sharing? That's like crazy that it's not. The button's not there. All right, let's go back to. Okay, let's see Close window. Move to iPad? All right, that is funny. Oh, it's this. I'm going to look for my Zoom. Oh, sharing, stop share. There we go. All right, back. I'm back.
Speaker 1:You got to hear what he does right from Elmer. Elmer write his own words on the interview. I find that spectacular, what he looks for and the simpleness. I mean, this is the man who started Blanton's in 1984. He's the one that is credited for the single barrel. So with that, let's get into the Elmer T Lee 2025 that I picked up on Tuesday because of the state of Ohio's March Madness.
Speaker 1:I mean, this drop was crazy. Everybody kind of got a little bit of a glimpse of it, but everybody thought around four o'clock I got there and I was about 20th in line and then there was no email and I had an appointment. So I had to bow out and at 4.54 the email went out and I got through my appointment and headed over back into line. I was about I would say now about 80, 85th in line and got there at five to six. I mean we're talking five minutes before drop time. I went through. I ended up with an Elmer T Lee. I could have also gone back through and got a Weller 12 year, but I also had picked up a special bottle that was a decent price and that is a special bottle that's going to be going out to somebody. So that was kind of cool. So let's start the Old Louisville Whiskey Company Barrel Bottle Breakdown of Elmer T Lee.
Speaker 1:While I'm opening this this is a fresh crack I am about to tell you about our barrel bottle breakdown rating system. We base it off of NOX. There are four categories Nose, which is your aroma, smell, body, taste and finish. The nose and the body can get up to four NOX the taste and the finish can get up to five knocks. The old louisville whiskey company in louisville, kentucky, amin there does a great job. Uh, you got to check it out. Get over there. Um, look it up. You don't want to miss out. And if you go there, let them know that Tiny sent you over there and he's got barrels in the back. He's got his tour experience. You can buy Pretty much. His distribution is straight from the distilleries and he has now got his own little pot still this there and he's running some there. So it's really cool old louisville whiskey company.
Speaker 1:So you can give it up to five knocks on the taste and the finish and if one of the categories is exceptional, you can add an extra knock, which is called a boot up up. So with no more, let's see. Uh oh, over here I've got my knocker, my trusty bung hammer, and I'm going to knock the barrel over here behind me. Some people can hear it, some people't, but I will tell you how many I give it and I will make a noise one way or another when we're knocking. So this is Elmer 2025 Fresh Crack.
Speaker 1:Elmer T Lee. I always like, when I open it to let the air come out. I even sometimes sniff it out and know that that air has been sitting in there for a while. There's fresh air and we're going to basically tip this over, shake it up a little bit, get it there. So any of that air, whatever it's all mixed in, and here we go. Elmer T Lee is 90 proof. We've just heard from him. I'll read what it says on the back. I believe I did this before, but let's just say Elmer T Lee blew some of the finest bourbons ever bottled. This single barrel bourbon is a tribute to him and you heard how he picked it. Now he's not obviously picking it anymore, so it is a single barrel. At night, some, some are winners, some are losers, but in this case, most of the time, what he was looking for, I think they look for, and I can't see it being a loser. Now I'm gonna let y'all know how this goes and then afterwards we're going to compare the two the 2019 to the 2025.
Speaker 1:Oh, the nose is almost. Oh my God, it's the nose of a Dusty. I don't know why. Tons of caramel this is like old-fashioned whiskey. This is the stuff that I drink at Revival Spirits with Brad Bonds. Drink at Revival Spirits with Brad Bonds. Oh my God, that's off the charts. Caramel, vanilla, just the right amount of oak. No, no ethanol. Oh, that's what I want kentucky to whiskey to taste like. Let's see what it does in my glass. Let's roll this baby around. We're rolling it. There it comes. You bring that up off the glass and you look at it's 90 proof the nose, in my opinion, is already that that's an exceptional nose and it's sticking to that glen, the, the legs still haven't started to form, and what's forming?
Speaker 4:Wow, wow.
Speaker 1:It's really long legs. That's got some nice viscosity to it. All right, let's see what it tastes like. We'll do the body and the. The caramel vanilla that is. That's delicious. That is really a good barrel. Oak leather. Finish is decent. The finish is decent. I would say that is damn. That's damn good whiskey. This is my wheelhouse here. All right, this one's an easy one. All right.
Speaker 1:The nose is the real strong point of this. I am going to give the nose. I will give it a. I'm going to give it four knocks, the most I can, and I'm going to give the nose a, but up up. One, two, three, four and a, but up up. So five out of four already Can't give any more but up ups. But now the body Great body for a 90 proof. But taste hits your cheeks, but not the body part. It's really good. On the body, I'm going to give the body a three, three, one, two, three. So right now we're sitting at eight, three and five.
Speaker 1:Taste it's what I want a bourbon to taste like. There's a perfect right amount of caramel. That's what I want a bourbon to taste like. There's a perfect right amount of caramel, perfect amount of vanilla and then there's a little bit of, I want to say, char, a little bit of oak, a little bit of leather on the finish, and the finish is long. That's a damn good bottle. That is a damn good bottle and the bottle's really cool. It's got Elmer T Lee but in the back it's got a picture of him. Now when it's full you see the Elmer T Lee, but as it empties you see more of the picture of him. So it's really kind of cool. Cool bottle, cool presentation, all right. Taste-wise.
Speaker 1:Out of five, I I'm gonna give it a four, four. It's really good, all right. So we'll give it a four, four, one, two, three, four on taste and the finish. The finish for me is also. It's long, but we're dealing with a little bit of leather and oak and char, not as sweet. I like a sweet finish. So I think on this one I am going to give the finish a three, one, two, three.
Speaker 1:So tiny in the old louisville barrel bottle breakdown highly recommends a bottle for this. No doubt. If you can get a bottle of it it's great. And it's a 15 out of 18 at a 90 proof and I mean you're talking eight out of eight and then seven out of 10 on the taste and the and which caught, and we are talking about, I mean, 15 out of 18 on a, on a 90 proof. This Elmer T Lee has delivered, all right. So 15 out of 18 on that, elmer T Lee.
Speaker 1:So do you do all that on the tours? I do it on my tastings. They're big, big whitey and Thomas. You know, sometimes in Michigan I've I've been up there seeing some stuff, all right. So now comes the fun part.
Speaker 1:Um, this is a 2019 given to me by Super Nash. I am going to compare the two. This has been in the bottle and this is just all I have left. That's why I wanted to get. This is just all I have left. That's why I wanted to get this new Elmer T Lee, and we'll right now. It was $80 for the MSRP. This was people were shocked at the because it probably went up, I think, since last year almost twenty dollars. So we'll see what it's good, all right. So we're going to compare the two.
Speaker 1:Um, two single barrels going up against each other, and this one's six years old and this one is brand new. So I'm going to do a little taste here. Gotta love that. Now I'm going to see how close this is. There is the vanilla and then there's the caramel aspect of that one. This is 90 proof. That does a great thing. Let's roll that baby around in the glass and see what happens with that. All right, we're going to do that. We're going to see. See how it sticks. It seems to be doing similar stuff. Same thing. Both of them are 90 proof and nice then it's. It's sticking, maybe a little bit longer, but that's been in the that's.
Speaker 1:Uh, this is a bottom pour opposed to a top pour, so let's see what happens. Not, the nose is nowhere near this nose. This one has a little bit more pepper and a little bit of a sting. All right, let's see what it tastes like. Interesting, this one is way more easy. That one drinks higher than a 90. This one's drinking like an 80. They're very close, but this one's more poignant everything's. This one's mellowed down. The 2019 is a softer. This one's mellowed down 2019 is a softer pour, but they are very close.
Speaker 1:I would say on this one, the 2019,. A lot of people say that Elmer T Lee is good, but it just doesn't pop. Where the 2025 does pop, the 2019 is very, very easy. I would say this is a great. The 2019. I would give this to somebody who was starting out. There's a lot of vanilla in that. Wow, this one's just more. Everything's more. Stand up at attention on the 2025. The flavors are pronounced. At attention on the 2025. The flavors are pronounced, whereas the same flavors are all kind of like hanging out. This nose is much better. There's something about this nose that's a little bit different. I'm going to say the 2025 is better than 2019. I really recommend the 15 out of 18 on that. I really recommend the 15 out of 18 on that.
Speaker 1:Elmer T Lee. Oh, I lost my. Let's see what we're doing here. All right, drew says it's a very easy and smooth bourbon with classic bourbon notes. I would say that the 2019 is definitely easy and smooth, like you said, with the Classic Bourbon Notes. This one is Classic Bourbon Notes but it's got a kick. So I'm going with the 2025 over the 2019. But I for sure will finish that 2019 and reestablish the 2025 on my shelf.
Speaker 1:So there we go, folks, the scotchy bourbon boys. Old louisville whiskey company barrel bottle breakdown for tonight. So we've done the with the whistler. We've done the elmer t. We've done the Elmer T Lee. It's funny because I haven't had that much, but I haven't been having much at all because of the fact that having pneumonia and a gallbladder attack really kind of made it a little bit rough on me.
Speaker 1:Um, uh, 82, 99 in the jewel Osco. Um, yeah, I think we were 80, I think we were 79, 99. I think that's one thing. So it was probably out the door right around what you said. Um, really, someone's going to try and like, I don't understand why someone's gonna call me am I always fun to watch? But he drinks stuck in a conference, whatever, all right, why I'm getting called. All right, that's actually. And that's probably messing up the All right, let's just get off that.
Speaker 1:And I think I'm Stefan. I'm on my podcast. I got to go Tell them to video chat me. No, I can't do anything right now. I'm on my podcast. Okay, sorry folks, I'm going to get back onto the YouTube. I'm sure it paused it. I'm going to unpause it.
Speaker 1:No, it looks like we're still going. Are we still going? Yep, we're still going. Sorry for that, everybody. I don't know how that would happen, but that did you know. That's what we are. We're live and I'll just go back to YouTube and catch that feed. There we are, let's see, play, all right, all right. All right, all right, I'm probably not on the live part. Let's just go here and catch up. I know how to do this. All right, here we go Live, let's see. All right, that was me messing around. All right, no sound, there you go. Yep, the sound came because, uh, my son just was trying to. It doesn't matter, all right anyways. All right, so that's pretty much it for tonight.
Speaker 1:Folks, I gotta get going off and do some uh errands. Uh, look for a couple, uh, I I might do a couple lives from florida, might do a live from jack daniels. Um, might do a live after the makers mark too. So we're gonna maybe not, we're gonna be recording the podcast and everything. But look for our lives throughout this week. We'll be at Maker's Mark tomorrow and Jack Daniels Sunday, and then I'm going to be heading down to Florida and I might do a couple of lives down there. Maybe even the podcast on the Thursday night with my dad might be able to get him to do that. But anyways, remember wwwscotchiebourbonboyscom for all things Scotchie Bourbon Boys.
