The amber glow of bourbon takes on a mystical quality when kissed by smoke. Tonight's exploration of the Diablo's Cut Smoker Kit reveals how authentic bourbon barrel oak transforms ordinary spirits into something extraordinary, imparting toasted caramel notes that smooth away any harshness.
As America's birthday approaches, we dive into the fascinating history connecting whiskey to our national identity. From George Washington's Mount Vernon distillery to the whiskey that fortified Revolutionary troops at Valley Forge, these spirits didn't just witness history—they helped shape it. The Whiskey Rebellion, presidential pardons, and centuries-old distilling traditions reveal how deeply intertwined American independence and whiskey truly are.
Guided by Whiskey Advocate's selection of twelve American whiskeys that capture the spirit of Independence Day, we taste through bottles that tell uniquely American stories. Colonel EH Taylor's pioneering work at what would become Buffalo Trace, the Jefferson's family connection to Thomas Jefferson himself, and Yellowstone's homage to our first national park—each bottle offers more than just flavor; it provides a tangible connection to our shared heritage.
Whether you're a seasoned whiskey enthusiast or just beginning your journey, this episode offers historical context and practical appreciation techniques that will enhance your Fourth of July celebrations. The combination of smoke, spirit, and story creates an experience as multifaceted as America itself—bold, complex, and worthy of celebration.
Join us for our milestone 500th episode on July 24th with special guests from across the whiskey industry. Until then, remember: good bourbon equals good times and good friends. Drink responsibly and live your life uncut and unfiltered.

So we're going to have that covered. But what we're going to do is start off with the smokers and then the smoking thing, because I think that's really kind of cool. Plus it's got ice and I got to get this thing going. But I'll also tell you that excited.

Speaker 1:This is a little bit different. This is a Thursday night, and Thursday nights the Tuesday-Thursday night thing, is on purpose. It's like I want to be able to just, you know, talk to you guys about spirits, sip on spirits. Tomorrow's a working day so you can't really push it too much. So it's kind of like a real kind of cool kind of podcast. But tonight there's the.
Speaker 1:Tomorrow is the 4th of July and this is not a weeknight, so I'm going to have a little bit of fun tonight. So I've got a bunch of stuff going on. Plus, I think I'm going to sip along with this list. I don't have all 12, but I got close and I'm sure, randy there or Walker, if you've entered your locker, you guys are going to be close to this too. Sure, randy there, or Walker, if you've entered your locker, you guys are going to be close to this too. But I will talk a little bit about what they say about each whiskey and then I'll go into what whiskey meant to our country overall throughout the independence, and I've got a little bit of information on that. So that's what we're going to be talking about tonight. It looks like everything's on, everything's working. Are we working there? Yep, that's clicking away. I'll stay away from all that, all right.
Speaker 1:So this smoker system it's called Diablos, it comes, it's so cool, I swear to God I got this so fast after talking to him Comes in this nice box with, you know, the black grass, and what I will do is quickly read what the smoker Now there is. I'm going to try and see if I can get on the podcast or through a link. I'll throw up the QR code, but you can go to Diablo's Cut Smoker Kit. I'm sure if you search Diablo's Cut Smoker Kit you can get to the website and watch the video.
Speaker 1:But it says made entirely of authentic bourbon barrel oak staves to create our incredible vacuum smokers and smoking shavings. Speaker 1:And so this kit came with a Glen. And then it comes with the barrel. It comes with the bear. I'll show it to you guys. I mean it comes with the torch. I mean the torch is fantastic. Here's the torch. Look at that baby and watch. Yeah, there you go, go. That's pretty cool. You guys all heard that on the. I'll get it close. You can hear that on the audio. And then it can't comes with.
Speaker 1:It's a barrel, barrel wood. It's got the shape of the glass on the bottom side so it fits on the glass. I got the glass right here and you'd stick it right there, and then it's got in there. It's got the little screen that you put the wood chips in. So you got that. Then you've got this same piece of wood with the cover of the barrel char right there, and what you do with this is that. I'll explain. It's used to cover the glen where the smoke hits. Now it's really kind of cool.
Speaker 1:I'm going to try and do this the way they did it, and so what I've got is the first thing I gotta do is I'm going to. I've got the whiskey in the glass, okay, so I'll show what what they do and how you do it. And I've got the ice. Let's see if this baby, I should pull this out and at least get it ready. Drop it back in here for a stack. Drop it there, that's good. Let's drop that back out of the way. That's out of the way, all right. So I've got two glasses, but this glass here is ready to go.
Speaker 1:So what these chips are are these smoking shaving, and this is what makes this pretty cool. So you take the shavings and these are actual shavings, and when you smell it's, it's not just shave, it's shavings from staves that have whiskey on them. So you take a shaving, I like to get, let's go and we'll put. I'm trying to do this so that and there's some, I mean the shavings are cool, I mean they're actual, like you can tell. And then, since I'm going to do this twice, so the first thing you got is I got to get this. I got the shavings out. The shavings are like what they're saying, because it's from the. What you're going to, what you're burning and smoking is from the barrel.
Speaker 1:So you take your glass empty for this one and you put this over the top and you hold that there. Now, here we go. You just basically use this to fill the glass. You fill the glass with smoke. Then what you do is you use this and you put that over. So we got a glass filled with smoke. I'll set this over here. And then what you do is you take your whiskey in the glass and you pour it in and you put the glass over the top of it. Now we start to make.
Speaker 1:Now I'm going to drop the ice in and I got the whiskey. Oh god, darn it. Let's switch glasses. Let's drop the ice. There we go. Let's drop the ice in this. That'll drop down in a sec. So I got the ice, ice ball in right in there. Now this is where you start to add the other stuff. So so I've got the Middle West. What I'm using is Middle West wheat bourbon on this one. So the first thing I'm going to do is do the shot. Okay, let's just use this. I'm going to use a shot glass for measuring. There we go. That's my agave simple service syrup. I dropped that baby in with the ice.
Speaker 1:Then what I do is take my bitters. I'm going to give three dashes. These are cherry bitters. Two, three. So I give it three dashes of cherry bitters, dashes of cherry bitters. Then I take my cherries with a toothpick. I'm gonna get two cherries with the toothpick. Let's see if I can do this. These are almost. These brandy cherries are almost muddled already. So I'm gonna drop one, drop one While that smoke keeps smoking. Drop two, try and drop three. I love cherries in my old-fashioned and when I'm making an old-fashioned I don't. Let's just go three. Now, I've got that in there. All right. Now I'm going to take my.
Speaker 1:I did some zest and what you do is you do a little bit, or you do that, let it, and then you hit it around the edge. And then what I do is I spiral it, hit it through toothpick and drop that baby in. So now what you do is you got this and you got it smoked. So what you do is you spin it. Now, I'm not the best spinner. Let's spin it with my right hand. Okay, let's see if I can get it spun. Okay, we're spinning it. So this actually smokes the bourbon. Now what I'm going to do? So I'm going to pour some in Plus. I want to taste oh, that's so good, that was so, so good.
Speaker 1:Now, at this point, I have my trusty buffalo trace spoon and I oh, come on, the ice is being a pain in the butt, is what it is. It's just too big for this glass usually, so I'm gonna stir, stir. There we go, let's do some rolling. I was being a little bit messy there. I'm not making it for anybody else, all right. So what do we got here, we got a little bit, got to see what I can pull out. Usually I have a rag, but lately I have not had any rags. Sometimes I can pull a napkin out of here. All right, what do I got? Anything. Well, let's see what I can use. Just looking, all right. So this shirt needs to be washed, so let's just wipe it up. There we go, use your shirt. Good, good bartending trick right there.
Speaker 1:All right, that's the first old-fashioned now if now you can also smoke it further. But I wonder what is with this ice? All right, I wonder if I do, if that'll work. I wonder if I have a bigger rocks glass. That one I might have one way bigger. Okay, let's see. Yeah, that's a bigger one, let's see. All right, so let's go with the bigger one.
Speaker 1:Pull this Kentucky bourbon this is from the bourbon trail. Let's see if this yeah, that looks like it's going to work. There we go Woo, all right, so let's get real creative. It's like okay, so you saw how you did that, where you mixed it, mixed it and you get this delicious. That's a fantastic, fantastic old-fashioned. The smoke flavor is fantastic. I love this smoker.
Speaker 1:Now I'm looking Put another, another, get my chip, get another chip in there. Well, let's, let's go for broke and see what happens. When you got a shaving, I'll drop this shaving back in. All right, I'm loading her up, but the flavor was fantastic, and so, if you really want to do something quick with this Diablo and you like smoker, you got all this stuff. I've got all the, I got the bitters, I've got the simple agave, simple syrup, and I've got the cherries. Now, the only thing you would do on this, in my opinion, you still got the cherries, which are good, so I'm going to wrap this with another zest. I don't have another toothpick, so I'm going to drop that baby in. What I'm going to do, though, is this is the coolest thing. This is one of my favorite things in the world.
Speaker 2:Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Speaker 1:I gave a William Dalton to a local celebrity bartender yesterday. Now, that's cool. Anybody else out there? Hello, from Ireland. All right, that is Iman. Nice to see you, awesome. So I don't know why I'm having problems opening up the Buffalo trace. There it is. There we go. Now this comes on your shelf here in the united states. Anybody can buy it. Uh, I'm pretty sure if you'll see this on the shelf, we do it, but I picked this up at the distillery so I'm gonna.
Speaker 1:This is actually an old-fashioned. This is 84 proof, so it's an old-fashioned in a bottle. So there's, you just add the mix, pour it in, drop your cherry in. Well, let's drop a couple cherriesries in. I'm going to spoon them in with this and then I'm going to mix it. We drop the, what you call it. We'll drop the cherry in this time. These brandy cherries are so fantastic. They're American spoon candied brandy cherries from Michigan. So good, put that there. It's like cherry pie in a thing.
Speaker 1:So now I've got my smoker, I've got the witch calling in there, all you got to do. That's pretty good. No, it's right there. Oh God, I'm going to start the whole place on fire. Let's make sure I didn't start my carpet on fire. Nope, it looks like it went down. I checked. Yeah, that wasn't probably the best thing to do, but I got the smoker working right now. It's there now, normally. Let's see, I'm gonna take my jacob bromwell and we're gonna go like this. There we go.
Speaker 1:So now I've smoked the drink. Oh, it smells so good. So now I'm smoking this old-fashioned with like a normal. So you can do both ways. This is you saw how it works. It's just. That is great.
Speaker 1:But the flavor on each one, let's see which one I like better. I wonder if I can. Can that one's delicious? I mean, god, making it with the wheat whiskey? I will say it doesn't. It does take away the bite. All right, everybody, let's do this. I'm gonna put it up there close. It's smoked. Here we go. Oh, look at, that Comes off perfectly. Got the bourbon trail. Now that is a smoked, smoked drink right there. Folks, it's all. My bar is going to need to be clean, that's for sure. It's actually being used as a bar right now. So there you go. There is perfect. That's what I'm going to be sipping on, these two old fashions tonight. But wow, that's a buffalo trace with a smoke. I will tell you.
Speaker 1:The cast strength wheat bourbon from middle West Spirits has a nice flavor to it. It's more, there's a little bit more of a bite. I would love Justin to give you a scotch on the rocks. What's your favorite scotch? The Pastel, let's see. It was Justin All right and c-town all right.
Speaker 1:Middle west wheat whiskey is really good. Yes, it is the calf strength the wheat whiskey and the weeded bourbon. Both have them both. I highly recommend it. Uh, for four leaf whiskey all right. So then we got that all right.
Speaker 1:So I think that was a pretty cool demonstration. Um, okay, today I'm somebody now. Okay, I get what I ordered. An on-air sign came today. Yes, you're somebody now. All right, randy. Oh, hey, terry, good to see. Oh, terry, dant ordered an on-air sign. He's somebody now. This, that's pretty cool. Um, that, those on-air signs. I gotta get more batteries for that one. It ran out last time, so we're there now.
Speaker 1:So that brings us to the second part of our question. What are you guys doing for the fourth? I mean, have those six partial bottles from the? Walker asks about knobs. Nobs will have those six partial bottles from you next weekend when I take my granddaughter up to Michigan hoping that some babies pop this weekend so my wife can go, so Roxy can go with me, but I'm going up there no matter what, so I'm going to get to see my grandson uh coming up. So that's kind of cool. Uh, thank you guys for everybody saying hi and talking and commenting because I really love um, let's see, finished in the yes to West Wheat. He says so Four Leaf Whiskey, said he took the Middle West Wheat bottle finished in video to a friend in Ireland who owns a distillery. Now that is pretty cool. Oh, come on, I didn't mean to do that, god, I didn't know. The live stream can't end. I can't end the live stream watching it. All right, there we go. All right, we're back, all right. So that brings us to the.
Speaker 1:The independence day. It's, it's very. Independence day is a pretty cool holiday. I understand there's a lot of people overseas and whatever you know, but for us, uh, whiskey is such a unbelievable um part of why the United States exists. I mean, there are so many different things that whiskey has done and here is some things that I was able to get.
Speaker 1:For Independence Day, celebrating with whiskey or bourbon is a great way to honor the American spirit. Bourbon, being an American-made spirit is a popular choice and there are many excellent bourbons and other whiskeys perfect for the occasion. Whether you prefer sipping them neat or in a cocktail, tonight I'm going to do both, but it's in a cocktail right now. So good, ah, so good. Both of them, smoked, are delicious. This smoker from the diablo's cut smoker kit is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Go to the website and pick up, pick up one. The torch works so good. The system works good. You saw how it worked. It was great, so, anyways. So all right, so I gotta do that on this one.
Speaker 1:Um, bourbon is deeply rooted in american history and making it a fitting choice for celebrating the nation's independence, according to Dread River Distillery. Whether you enjoy it neat, or on the rocks, or in a classic cocktail like an old friend, or a whiskey sour, or an old-fashioned or a whiskey sour, bourbon offers a range of flavors and experiences. If you're smoking meat, having an old-fashioned or drinking it neat is pretty cool. Now they come up with a bunch of different stuff, but I'm not going to get into that because, uh, don't be afraid to afraid to try a rye whiskey or an american single malt. If you're looking for something different Now I will tell you a rye whiskey is very, very part of American history, especially in Pennsylvania.
Speaker 1:Now that brings us to this part, the 12 American whiskeys that capture the spirit of the Fourth of July. So Independence Day is upon us. Time for fireworks parades, backyard barbecues, beach days Now this is from Whiskey Advocate, and perhaps a dram or two when the sun goes down. Here are some selections, listed alphabetical order, that will add more fun to your glorious forth. Some of these whiskeys have carved their place in the American experience, while others simply evoke a uniquely American spirit. So the first one is 15 Stars. First West Blend of Straight Rise. It's batched to SDD 52.5 ABV $89. It's batched to SDD 52.5 ABV $89. I got to taste this at the New Orleans Bourbon Festival in 2024. Fantastic, it makes sense. And so Whiskey Maker 15 Stars is named as a toast to Kentucky, joining the union as the 15th state in 1792. Joining the union as the 15th state in 1792. The us flag with 15 stars and stripes, which was approved by president george washington, is proudly featured on its label. 15 stars was founded in 2019 by father and son blenders, rick and ricky johnson, and it debuted its first whiskey in 2022. We've scored six of them so far and all have been above 90 points. This is Whiskey Advocate and, like I said, I got to meet Rick Johnson and he did a tasting for me. Very good whiskey Colonel.
Speaker 1:Eh Taylor single barrel bourbon. Now this is where we start. I've got the EH Taylor single barrel right here. That's one of two. Eh Taylor is considered the founder of the modern whiskey era as he built what is today Buffalo Trace Distillery into a major whiskey making site. In 1870, taylor purchased the distillery, naming it OFC Old Fire Copper in tribute to his use of copper stills. Two years after the deal, taylor built himself a major new distillery and eh taylor is made there today. Buffalo trace is the oldest distilling site in the country. Whiskey has been warehoused there since 1811 and distilling started in 1858.
Speaker 1:So I will bring out now this is my single barrel and it's been in the bottle for a long time. So first I'm going to put a little bit in a very little bit and taste it. Here we go. That is the funkiest taylor single barrel. I've had this for a long time. I don't. It was a single barrel barrel pick that I and I'm gonna.
Speaker 1:Let's see what happens when we smoke it, because something has to happen to this. I I'm not drinking a lot, guys, because I'm going to drink a lot, so let's try it again. Let's put this, let's put that up. Let's get the smoke going. There we go, got that baby lit, set that over here. Make sure no cords get whatever. Let's shake that around in there. Let's see if the smoke can fix.
Speaker 1:I might smoke the rest of this because this one has always I had, if you followed this, we actually had a benchmark single barrel that was better than this single barrel, but I smoked it. Look at it, sit down there in there in my scotchie bourbon boy glass. Let's pull it off. That is really cool how that smoke sits in that glen. I'm still letting some out. It's just sitting. Oh, that's cool how it's coming out out. It's just sitting. Oh, that's cool how it's coming out. Let's get back into um, let's get over here, come back here, cause we did that and you can see that. All right. So we got some smoke in there. Let's see what happened. I'm going to drink the smoke. It fixed it. That was fantastic, all right. So there we go, all right, the third one is an old overhaul mongolela, mano Nagahala, mano Nagahala. Okay, straight mash. Rye 47.
Speaker 1:Old Overholt's activity as a commercial whiskey dates back to 1810, when Abraham Overholt assumed management of the family distillery and began to commercialize it. Ownership later came to the Gilded Age tycoon, henry Clay Frick, who was Abraham's grandson. Old Overholt was long one of the greatest Pennsylvania, one of the great Pennsylvania rise. Though it's been produced in Kentucky by owner Jim Beam for many years, its history can be explored at the West Overton Village and Museum in West Overton, pennsylvania. All right, so then the next one is I don't got that. So right now we're one out of three, right, yep, but now we're two out of four. I'm going to bat 500.
Speaker 1:This one is, despite this one's, eagle Rare. 10-year-old bourbon, 45 ABV, $38. This, this is from 2024, so it's a little bit more, but I've got eagle rare. There it is. It's up right there. Let's put that in there. Let's listen to this.
Speaker 1:Despite its proud name and lofty status, eagle rare has been around only since the 1970s. Still, the name is too good not to include. On the 4th of july, eagle rare was created by seagrams at the four roses distillery, then called old prentice it's bird imagery targeting the popular wild turkey brand. In 1989, amid whiskey's lean years. It was sold to Sazerac, which soon acquired Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1992. And Eagle Rare moved in. The rest, as they say, is history.
Speaker 1:Eagle Rare is in huge demand. You can find it, but probably not at SRP here in Ohio. Yes, you can't find it, but probably you can find it, but probably not at srp. But here in ohio yes, you can. And this is one of my favorite bottles, because this came out of the pandemic and this is a blend, and when I got this, this one you can see right off of this, this, this one was pretty good. Okay, so let's see what year it is. I mean, eagle Rare is a 10 year. Let's see where we got that. There we go. It's 2021. So, yes, this is my. I picked this up for MSRP and I don't think this is going to need any smoking. No, this is a damn good Eagle Rare. Love it. Now Eagle Rare lately has come out with the Ritt earlier and man and holla. Man and holla, man and holla. Thank you, walker, for that one. All right, so we're two out of four Now I've tasted this one. So we're two out of four Now I've tasted this one.
Speaker 1:George Washington, straight rye. I mean, this makes sense. Randy, thank you for bringing that with you. I have to get there soon. I think late 2025, early 2026 is going to be dedicated to Pennsylvania.
Speaker 1:I'd like to go back to Liberty Bowl, stolen wolf, and make it to Virginia for the George Washington's uh Mount Vernon uh distillery. Uh, steve Beshar does such a good job there. Got to meet him at stolen wolf when uh Martin Nash was invited to do the veterans mash-in that happened there and I got to cover that and I was honored to be a part of that to meet Steve Alan Bishop was there and then you had oh, come on, I know the stolls uh, it's not coming to my right now, but both of them eric, I believe, and dick dick stole um, and they basically hired the distiller, the last distiller who worked at Michter's before it left Pennsylvania, closed down and then eventually went to Kentucky. But that distiller at the Michter's distiller was distilling at Stolen Wolf. So that's really cool.
Speaker 1:In 1779, george Washington Distillery on his estate in Mount Vernon, virginia, produced 11,000 gallons, making it one of the biggest distilleries in America at the time. The distillery and gristmill built in 1797, and the gristmill still works today. They have the stone that they reconditioned at that gristmill. That gristmill works still today. They have the stone that they reconditioned at that gristmill. That gristmill works still today. We're inspired by James Anderson Washington, scottish-born farm manager, located just under three miles from the Mount Vernon Estate entrance. Both buildings were restored in a project that began in the early 2000s, and the whiskeys are sold on its website.
Speaker 1:So that's a fantastic bottle. That is rye dedicated to being made the same way that it was in the 1700s, so, which is really cool. All right, so now we get into. So I was two out of five on the first five. So Jefferson's Reserve 45 ABV. Jefferson's was founded by Trey Zoller and his father, chet, in 1997. The name was indeed inspired by Thomas Jefferson, american's third president and author of the declaration of independence. Chet, who passed away earlier this year, was a lawyer that's 2024 and a historian whose eighth generation grandmother, marion mclean, was arrested in 1792 for production of spiritist liquors. Last year's jefferson release of marion mclean limited edition expression a blend of five bourbons that still can be found, that still can be found online um, that's really cool.
Speaker 1:I've got the jefferson's twin oak, but, uh, we need the. Where did they go? They should be somewhere. Did I put them. They can't disappear. Top there they are alright. So I have the Jefferson's Reserve Twin Oak custom, very rare custom barrel, single barrel, and so we'll just take a little bit of that. Hopefully I don't need to smoke it. Take that off just a little. Roxy came down and she's doing laundry. Hey, roxy, hi, so do you want to taste my fantastic Smokes, old Fashions? Yes, please. She won't be on camera, but she'll come over here and you'll be able to hear her. Hopefully she won't bump any of the equipment, because that's a possibility. But there we go now. This one was made with middle west spirits and it was done the diablo, the diablo cut way. The diablo cut smoking kit way. Did you just eat a cherry? I did. She steals. My favorite, those are the brandy cherries.
Speaker 2:It's actually quite spectacular can you make me one?
Speaker 1:after the podcast yes, but then that one was the one with middle west spirits. Now this one, that's yummy now, this is a quick, this is just smoked and it's the old-fashioned from buffalo trace.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I have to just taste.
Speaker 1:That don't make me one of those all right those lay me out lay anybody out, but I think actually my, the, the middle west, would probably lay up, bring it to kentucky what that one's better I agree, make me, make me. Of course, I will make you one of those and because that has the middle, I did the smoking the middle west like weeded one or yes I can tell this is the weeded bourbon that is good stuff, folks yep, there you go.
Speaker 1:So, uh, we're getting ready for fourth of july, that's for sure. And uh, all right, so that was the jefferson. So now we're three of six. Now comes the fun part mictors. Us1 barrel strength, rye, 55 abb. 110.
Speaker 1:Mictors is a kentucky whiskey with roots in Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1753 by Swiss Mennonite rye farmers, john Shank, in Schaeferstown, pennsylvania, northwest of Philadelphia. According to legend, john Shank, whiskey was so valued that George Washington visited the distillery and purchased whiskey for his troops at Valley Forge to fortify them for the winter of 1777 and 1778. Two centuries later, michter's touted its heritage as the whiskey that warmed the revolution. Michter's also makes a limited edition shanks whiskey.
Speaker 1:So here we go, this shanks, here it is. Uh, I have been able to. I love the Twin Oaks Jeffersons. I love Double Oaks, twin Double, whatever. That is a good old-fashioned, I'd like to do that again. This does not need any. That is a good old-fashioned, I'd like to do that again. This does not need any Shanks, does not need any difference. Okay, bought two Eagle Rare bottles last summer in Michigan for $37. Yeah, eagle Rare. When you find it on the shelf it's phenomenally reasonably priced For what it is. I mean, there's some batches I'm not a fan of, but there's other batches that are caramelly and for that price I mean, come on. So there you go.
Speaker 1:All right, so shanks, here we go. We'll just do a little bit. No, no, no, no, that was mictors. Sorry folks, I pulled the shanks too early. Let's do the mictors. My mictors is a super nash exclusive and we are talking, I wonder, if mictors puts the which call it on the bottle to see what year it is, because this might be a 2020 or 2019. I'm to check it out real quick. Let's see what we got. Do we got a UPC code on the bottle? I don't see it. No, not there. And sometimes it's right up here, Looking, looking, looking, looking, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. This might have been before. They were doing that, all right. So this is 86 proof. This is mictors. So this is 86 proof.
Speaker 1:This is Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish, kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey 86 proof. And Michter's batch. Yeah, okay, this was given to me by early on and there's only just a little bit left. And this was a phenomenal bottle, because I love toasted barrel finishes and this is toasted barrel finish, sour mash, and this was spectacular, is is a spectacular bottle, so we'll hit that baby up. But mictors we talked about that, and john shank and whatnot. So here, cheers to mictors. Put that back there. God, that's delicious. That was a. Oh there goes. Tiny's tasting room. We'll put that back up. Tiny's bourbon tasting room, thank you. Whiskey for that. Walker says he's sipping wild turkey kentucky spirit, a 1776, uh old pepper. Um is a damn good choice, that's for sure. All right, I'm enjoying myself, are you guys, thomas Anderson? Many bottles but don't have any mictors. Shelfers are too low proof for me.
Speaker 1:Well, thomas, I've got some really good mictors, so we need to get together, that's for sure all right, and that was not a chauffeur that actually came out of the uk on an auction that nash was able to get me. So that was pretty cool. So now, so right now. One, two out of three, three out of four, three out of five, four out of six, four out of seven. So now we go to shanks homestead sour mash whiskey 45.6, 110 um.
Speaker 1:This one is a limited edition whiskey from mictors that honors john shank who, as mentioned above, founded this is the distillery in 1753 that became Michter's in the 20th century. Sour mash whiskey is a method whereby a portion of previous distilled whiskey mash, known as the basket, is added to the next batch. It dates back to 1818, according to Kentucky Historical Society. This one is made with a lot of rye in the mash bill. Any mictors will do, but shanks truly commemorates American heritage. So here we go. We have shanks. It's over here, this bottle.
Speaker 1:When I got it, I believe, bombergers, shanks, bombergers. I was able to be in the right place at the right time and I was so happy to get some Shanks. And here we go to America. Cheers, my guys. All right, randy, do you have mictors? Um, barrel strength, special at limited editions, because those are the ones. If you got those to spare, I'm all in. When you come up you can bring that stuff up and we'll work out deals. God, that's delicious, it's so good. God, that's delicious, it's so good. The body at 91.2, that's what that is is so big on that and they do it justice. So we're at one, two, three, four out of five, four to six, five out of seven, so we're five out of eight. So now we've got uncle nearest single barrel.
Speaker 1:Honestly, I've tasted uncle nearest um at a couple whiskey festivals and but I do not have any of it. Uh, I find I'm not a huge fan of tennessee, bourbon and uh, jack daniels I'm okay with. Okay, but the other stuff, because of kentucky, ohio, wisconsin, michigan, all these different states that I'm in, tennessee reaches a little bit further than it's a it's length. So, uncle nearest, nearest green. The enslaved man who taught young jack daniels how to make whiskey joined his business after the civil war, was a free man and became the first head distiller at jack daniels distillery. Thanks to the efforts of author and entrepreneur Fawn Weaver, nearest Green's legacy lives on at the new Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, tennessee. It's a stunning campus that offers a distillery, tour, bars, dining and other amenities. So a little backstory. I've got to taste it at Bourbon, on the Banks and meet the people. Never met the people that you know, the high-end people. So that's the goal, but at the same time, I look forward to what they put in the bottle while they're, now that they've got a distillery and they're distilling whiskey and bourbon.
Speaker 1:Tennessee whiskey All right, this one again. Uprising American Single Malt 46. This one again uprising american single malt 46. Sons of liberty spirits is named for the group of patriots who fought the colonists freedoms during the american revolution. Based in South Kingstown, rhode Island, sons of Liberty launched its first whiskey Uprising in 2011. It's a stout beer brewed by Sons of Liberty it's also a brewing license and distilled into a single malt. The distillery makes a variety of whiskeys today, but Uprising continues to be the core label. Interesting, never tasted it.
Speaker 1:Wiggle Reserve, pennsylvania, straight Rye. Pittsburgh-based Wiggle Reserve notes the western Pennsylvania was the epicenter of American whiskey distilling in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1790s, german immigrant farmer Philip Wedge was among the leaders of men who stood firm against the tax man in a confrontation that led to the Whiskey Rebellion, with the region's whiskey makers unsuccessfully faced off against George Washington and his troops. Wiggle was sentenced to hang for the incident, but Washington pardoned him. Yeah, nobody should have hung, all right. So the last but not least, and I have this, this is Yellowstone Special Finishes cask finished bourbon. What could be more american than the beauty of yellowstone national park? Yellowstone whiskey was launched in 1872, the same year yellowstone park was established, and the whiskey was named for the national enthusiasm that surrounded the park's opening. Yellowstone bourbon is relatively small nowadays, but the very underrated whiskey was the largest selling whiskey in Kentucky during the 1960s and was also popular nationally.
Speaker 1:Yellowstone does a variety of special releases and this rum finish expression is among recent ones, and I have that particular bottle. Last but not least so, tonight, out of the top 12, I have one of two, one of three, one of four, two of five, three of six, seven, four of eight, five of nine, five of 10, six of 11. So I had 50% of them, plus I tasted. I've tasted, I believe, seven of 12. Let's see, I did not taste the overhaolt because it's a rye. The George Washington, I've tasted. That takes me to 7 of 12. Uncle Nearest, I've tasted. That's 8 of 12. So I've had 8 of the 12 whiskeys on the 4th of July whiskeys, and we will finish up with this particular one.
Speaker 1:You find the list If you search for Independence Day whiskeys and bourbons. You will find it, but it's Whiskey Advocates list from 2024, not 2025. There you go, randy, uh, thomas, all right, so this Yellowstone was signed by Stephen Fonte. He represents the brand ambassadorship of Yellowstone. The man is spectacular. He and Stephen Beam are such good friends who, basically Stephen Beam and Stephen Fonte, are the bourbon stewards of the Yellowstone brand. They brought it back. Limestone Branch brought this brand back from being one of the most popular brands in the 1960s and it had died out and they put it back on the shelf, putting spectacular bourbon into the bottle.
Speaker 1:I picked this up last year on the Scotchy Bourbon Boys bus tour and it was an honor to have Stephen and I look forward to meeting with Stephen again smoking a Rocky Patel that they're going to be releasing from the distillery. I mean, there's nothing better than this and I admit yellowstone it it. It's america. So I agree with that on the list. And there you have it. I've got six of the 12 that were here. I hope you enjoyed the podcast tonight. I'm going to end it for the podcast, not on Facebook and YouTube. I will invite everybody who has come on tonight.
