A seven-year wait is a big promise for any whiskey. We open Very Old Saint Nick Christmas Dream to see if the bottle delivers on the hype—and the first inhale already feels like a holiday kitchen. Think allspice, nutmeg, clove, and an eggnog whisper over warm, baked bread. From there, we walk through our full bottle breakdown—nose, body, taste, and finish—while sharing the road stories and tasting room moments that shaped how we understood this pour.
We set the stage with a quick toast to craft: Middle West Spirits’ grain-to-glass philosophy and Old Louisville Whiskey Company’s hospitality. Then we get into the glass. The body is rich and steady, legs thick and slow, the hug right in the pocket for a winter night. On the palate, the whiskey shifts into bread pudding with vanilla and cherry, then leans into a disciplined spice stack where allspice ties everything together. Even folks who usually avoid “spice-forward” profiles found the balance compelling. The finish runs long with a grown-up cacao note and a tart apple pop before the warmth fades—structured, reflective, and perfect for lingering conversation.
Along the way, you’ll hear why we use a transparent rating system, how a rare “butt up up” bonus is earned, and what it takes for a seasonal release to feel honest rather than gimmicky. We also celebrate community—six years of shows, the friendships formed over shared pours, and the way a good bottle can turn a night into a memory. If you’re hunting a holiday centerpiece or curious about how to evaluate special releases, this one’s for you.
If you enjoyed this, follow the show, share it with a whiskey friend, and drop a five-star review on Apple. Tell us your favorite seasonal pour and what you’re opening next—let’s keep the holiday cheer flowing.

The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/
Middlewest Spirits was founded in 2008, focusing on elevating the distinct flavors of the Ohio River Valley. Their spirits honor their roots and reflect their originality as makers, their integrity as producers, and their passion for crafting spirits from grain to glass. Their Michelon Reserve line reflects their story from the start to the bottle to your glass, with unique wheated and rye bourbons, and also rye and wheat whiskeys, the Michelone brand is easy to sip. It might be a grain to glass experience, but I like to think of it as uncut and unfiltered from their family to yours. Scott Barr. Scott Barr. All right. I I know how to deliver that for to him. That is crazy. Wow. I'm gonna have to re-record that podcast. No. So so we started, and I didn't pay attention. The song played, and then whatever, and I put the headphones down and it must have disconnected whatever it disconnected and it stopped recording. And so everything up until the point of the winner has been recorded, and then it was just basically we're welcome to the Scotchy Bourbon Boys podcast. Scott Barr. He's the winner. Congratulations, Scott. I will work out we'll work on getting Scott and Patrick their their picks.
SPEAKER_04:And and everybody that won a chill-out sample, except for my brothers and sisters. You'll contact them.
SPEAKER_02:So everybody who won has to come and fly to South Carolina.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, absolutely. I'm gonna tell y'all.
SPEAKER_02:All right. So, but but at the same time, Bourbon Claws always has an open door for anybody. Anybody, yes. So there's no doubt about it. All right, so that is our 12 days of Christmas wrapped up. And then we're just gonna just because this is the holiday uh podcast, we are going to do, and and Mrs. Super Nash is going to participate in the old Louisville bourbon bottle breakdown of this very special bottle that we picked up. What was that whisper? I told her she needs two glasses of the very old St. Nick Christmas Dream from the Preservation Distillery, which is the same distillery that our old man winter bourbon of the year came from. And so we are gonna get that going. But old Louisville in the same point. It's right now in Louisville, Kentucky, but it also is moving to Shively to their new location soon. But they are still at their their old their Louisville location, and Amin there does fantastic experiences. You gotta get to the old Louisville whiskey company, make sure that you check them out online, make an appointment, go down there and see Amin, tell them the Scotchy Bourbon Boys sent you, and they are the sponsor of our old Louisville Whiskey Company bourbon bottle breakdown. And this is the Christmas dream. Now, I'm the same way, but Roxy, she threw those that that piece of paper at me. I have one of our classic Scotchy Bourbon boys, Glenn Karen's, and this special bottle that I opened. We did Christmas in Michigan last weekend with my son and daughter-in-law and my grandson. So we were up there and we were able to open this bottle. So this bottle has been open, and just like Super Nash's, now Super Nash has white. I picked red. So that that is cool. My wife picked Mrs.
SPEAKER_04:Bourbon Claws picked white.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:So preservation does a really good job, and we I mean, we got onto them with uh rare perfection. I mean, that is some fantastic, fantastic whiskey, Canadian whiskey. There it's it is so delicious, and I've got the 14 and 15, and now I've got this very old Saint Nick Christmas dream. So I'm gonna pour that, and that's what we are gonna do, the Scotchy Bourbon Boys barrel bottle breakdown of the very old Saint Nick Christmas dream. This is the first time, I think. What did they say in the last this is the first time in the last seven years? Super Nest? Was it seven?
SPEAKER_04:What?
SPEAKER_02:That they released the Christmas dream.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah. Yeah, this this is the first time in the last seven years, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. And we got to taste this at the distillery. Uh, once uh old man winter had one this had won our bourbon of the year, which we will be producing next week. I will put that podcast up. That really, what would you say? I mean, the one the one classic thing that old man winter and just the preservation is, is that I'm known for diving out a bus at preservation distillery. I mean, I basically supernash was doing all the talking, and somehow we pull up the preservation distillery on our bus tour, and I got it in my mind I was gonna beat Super Nash out the door. And I jumped up, I hit the stair, and I went flying out the bus.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, he hit the stairs all right. No, did he hit the gravel, right?
SPEAKER_02:The gravel, and and there's there were there was blood on my elbow and everything, but I was okay.
SPEAKER_04:There were like six or seven women come piling off the bus. Oh, are you okay? Are you okay? He had just a smidgen of blood on his phone. He needed tails. Oh my gosh, he was sucking it up.
SPEAKER_02:I I was. There's no doubt I enjoyed, I enjoyed that, but I'll never forget that.
SPEAKER_04:Oh my gosh. Then next thing I knew he gets the the first six taste of all the bottles in there. And at that time, like they forgot all about all the other guys on the bus after that happened.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, who was the distiller at the time? I knew him. Oh, yes. Oh, god, it's not coming. And he did a great tasting with us, and we we, you know, and uh he was hand-picked by Lisa Roper Wicker. Yep. That's a great story. All right, anyways, the old Louisville Whiskey Company bourbon bottle breakdown is rating system is as follows four for two categories. The nose and the body can give up to four knocks. The other two categories are the taste and the finish, and you can give up to five knocks. But if you have an exceptional category where you think it's one of the best bourbons in that category you've ever smelled or tasted or had a finish, you can add a butt up up. And that is directly related to Roxy and I having finale on vacation where I noticed that her butt needed to be announced, and that's where that came out of. It's a butt-up up. So there you go.
SPEAKER_04:All right. So let's get the news in this.
SPEAKER_02:Now, this is a higher proof. I believe it's one hundred and 112.2. 112.2. I gave this uh I gave the the 112.2 and then the 120, the this uh river route, which is fantastic. It is called Naughty or Nice 2, and it is a Green River, and this this bottle was 125, and then I had got the weeded Aaron Harris Ohio pick of Green River, and that was the last one for my son. But there you go.
SPEAKER_04:Hey, it says right on the bottle that this will make a joyful season. Well, we better when you where you open the bottle.
SPEAKER_02:We are joyful tonight. All right, so let's let's uh we can give up to four on this.
SPEAKER_04:As a matter of fact, it says on the back, Christmas dream. This vintage bottle represents the joy of the season, a celebration of life and tradition. And it's an original family recipe, vintage cast, just distilled in bottled by preservation distillery.
SPEAKER_02:And they had this, it's the first time they released it because one of the things on this nose is cheers, is allspice. And Merry Christmas, everybody. There's a huge Allspice note on this, on this.
SPEAKER_04:It's with baked smells like Christmas in a glass.
SPEAKER_02:It smells like baked holiday bread.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, it does.
SPEAKER_02:I even smell the dough. You can smell that everywhere. There's cinnamon, there's clove.
SPEAKER_04:And I could almost yeah, the eggnog.
SPEAKER_02:If you if you if you go use your dominant nostril and then rotate the glass, you really pick up the eggnog.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:I will give you that. That's a really nice nose. All right. When we were choosing, we had some different ones to choose from, and we all chose this bottle.
SPEAKER_04:Oh look, I barely had them four.
SPEAKER_02:I mean, the legs are so thick and long, it's like, and they stick, and all of a sudden they're there, and it's just like, holy man.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I can't see where I licked the outside of the glass. On the other side, you're like, they are thick and long.
SPEAKER_02:All right, what are we gonna nose this at? All right, we'll give you the number one, I'll go two, and then let Mrs. Super Net let Mrs. Bourbon Claws go last.
SPEAKER_04:We can let her go let her ladies first.
SPEAKER_02:No. Do not make her make her do not make her go first. All right, you want to go first? I'll go first. From a Christmas standpoint, this is great. There's baked apple, there's egg knot, there's allspice. It's like a holiday extravaganza. I understand why they made this for the first time in seven years. I I will give this a nose of four.
SPEAKER_04:I have to concur. There are so many different aromas coming off that off that that bourbon. But they're Christmas aromas.
SPEAKER_02:I mean, I get it. They must have, they, they must have the allspice, the nutmeg, the vanilla, like almost like a vanilla pudding.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I go four too.
SPEAKER_02:All right, Mrs. Bourbon Claus. This is your first ever rating on the on the podcast. And I and do not let us at all fact your you say what you think.
SPEAKER_04:It doesn't smell good to you.
SPEAKER_05:No, it's so yummy. It's it's just it's really good. One, two, three, or four. When when he brought it out, and we tried it, Rachel tried it. I was like, it was like, oh my god, anything that I smell or sip and taste, and he gives me chills, that's good. Oh, and it did, though, I definitely I definitely give it a four.
SPEAKER_02:Oh right. Look at what we're doing. We're changing her into a whiskey connoisseur. No, I will say that I will say bourbon clauses, Mrs. Claus's smile is fantastic tonight.
SPEAKER_04:It has been wonderful all night long, I know. All right.
SPEAKER_02:Let's go to the body. I mean, got a great body. I mean, it's are we talking about Mrs. Bourbon Claus or are we talking about the whiskey?
SPEAKER_04:Oh. Holiday who be winning.
SPEAKER_02:All right. I uh okay, so you go first on the on the body there.
SPEAKER_04:I think it's got a great body to it. It's real thick in the glass. It's hitting all the right full mouth feel to it.
SPEAKER_02:It doesn't sting your cheeks. No. I swear to god, you can sticks to them. Are there is there any is there any taste buds on your cheeks? Because I always thought they were on your I've always thought they were on your tongue.
SPEAKER_04:But all all the flavors are just sticking there. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_05:Um when it goes down, the hug on it is really good. It's really nice. It's not too much, it's not too little to me.
SPEAKER_02:It would be perfect if you had a sit and drink this in front of the fireplace.
SPEAKER_04:Yes. All right. On a bear skin room in the mountain. Yeah, baby. After I deliver some presents. I got business to take care of. All right. That's your reward. We'll let we'll let her go second on the body. What do you think? One, two, three, or four.
SPEAKER_05:On the body?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:I'm gonna say a three.
SPEAKER_02:All right.
SPEAKER_05:The taste is just too good. I don't like it.
SPEAKER_02:Yep. All right. So what are you giving it? Bourbon claws.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, I gave it a four.
SPEAKER_02:You didn't tell me a four?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I did.
SPEAKER_02:So it's up to me now?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. Yep. How does that sit in your mouth?
SPEAKER_02:It's four. Yeah, that's all everywhere.
unknown:All right.
SPEAKER_02:All right, so taste. She can go first on the taste, and I'll go first on the finish.
SPEAKER_04:Now, and if you think, remember, if you think that this category is a five. But if you think it's it's exceptional, you can give it the butt up up. So just keep that in mind as you're tasting it. And describing what you want to rate it as a taste. And usually that's like how many different flavors you can pull out and the way it sits, the way it flows across your tongue, and things like that.
SPEAKER_05:It's smooth, it's warm, it's got the holiday spirit. Just like, I don't know, it's just it's not too much and not too little of anything for me. Because it's just a little spice. It's Christmassy, and I just fell in love with it once the day I tried it. It it's it's good. So was somehow four or five?
SPEAKER_02:Five.
SPEAKER_05:Five. I give five.
SPEAKER_02:All right.
unknown:All right.
SPEAKER_04:Great description, too. I agree. That's one thing too. I want to tell you something about Mrs. Bourbonclos. Is that she usually doesn't like anything that's real peppery or spicy, like with the rye, you know, a lot of rye grains, like some of the stuff that I like. If it's got all that, then she you normally don't like it. But apparently this is well balanced.
SPEAKER_05:It is well balanced.
SPEAKER_04:And fermented. As far as the spice, the nutmeg, the the clove, and the uh the all-spice and the other flavors that you can taste in it.
SPEAKER_02:Barcy must be really good. Barcy knows what she's doing. I mean, there's a reason why she didn't release this Christmas dream for a while because she wasn't finding a barrel or a blend that would would would say would stand up to Christmas. I will I will be drinking this on Christmas Day. I will too. This is a fantastic bottle. When we were there, it stood out, and it's really cool that you guys pulled off the white, and I pulled off the red, the red wax, and I got my little Christmas hat right there.
SPEAKER_04:I I I made mention of that uh before the podcast got started. I don't have one of those.
SPEAKER_02:I somewhere got that from a from from a gift or whatever.
SPEAKER_05:But we chose white because our theme is snowflake.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:So that's why I chose it.
SPEAKER_02:Well, I choose red because of the Christmas red and I already had the old man winter, which was white, so I wanted the red. That's why, and I think Roxy chose it too. And so, what did you give it, Nash? I hadn't read it. I thought you were going next. I'm gonna go next.
SPEAKER_03:Yep.
SPEAKER_02:So bourbon claws is here. I think there's one. I think we should play. We could even when I drink this, I could play the song. I'm not gonna, because we played it twice. We'll play it at the end. But at the same time, with the song, I this is this is very different than the bourbon that I love. I love caramels and vanillas and you know whatever. But this pulls out all the flavors of Christmas. There's there's like an all space. There's that's what I was just sitting here thinking about. Allspice, there's the there's the apple. It's like a a Christmas pudding. There's a little bit of vanilla, but it's a it's a Christmas pudding. Yeah. No, it's bread pudding with nutmeg and apples and cherries and whatever. So so if I'm gonna rate this, now that's not my that caramel and vanilla really go above, but we're talking about this is Christmas and it's in in bourbon closets here. So as far as tastes go, I'm gonna give it a five. With Roxy's butt up up.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, a six. That's a good thing the way I write my five. I can instantly change it to a six.
SPEAKER_02:Why you thought I wasn't gonna give it a Roxy butt up up? I don't know.
SPEAKER_04:Of course. I'm gonna give it the butt-up.
SPEAKER_02:Do you like my my my uh Buffalo Trace Christmas? Christmas hat. You like that?
SPEAKER_04:Yes, I do. It looks like a nightcap. Like you're getting ready, you're getting ready to go to bed and and and dream of sugar plum fairies.
SPEAKER_02:I I didn't I did finally find the Yellowstone, but I fit in it much better this year, if you don't know it.
SPEAKER_04:Yellowstone, that's her E.H. Taylor.
SPEAKER_02:E.H. Taylor, yes. I did finally find the EH Taylor Christmas sweater.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, he's been very good.
SPEAKER_02:I the hey, I I I told everybody at work, it's like tonight join us because it's gonna go off.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, absolutely. This is it's Christmas.
SPEAKER_02:It's no, this is this is one I'm enjoying myself, and we're we'll have a couple people on afterwards, but not too long because it's already almost 10. So we'll I think I could go to I think I could go till 10:30, but that's that's it.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, we got we got Christmas dinner in the morning and all that stuff. I gotta fried turkey. She's gonna do a ham dressing.
SPEAKER_02:Why don't you what what's what's with wait, what turk you fried like a bunch of turkeys for for Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_05:If you've ever had one of mine, you know why it is fried turkeys, you will understand. Well then you're gonna have it's all it's already super nice.
SPEAKER_02:It's already basically turkey's a five with a butt up. Okay, so so super Nash. Next year, here, Christmas, fried turkey.
SPEAKER_05:He wants a fried turkey.
SPEAKER_02:I want one. You come up, you guys come up. Shipping costs and things like that's gonna eat you up. I don't want shipping costs, I want you. I'm all frying, I can't fry the turkey.
SPEAKER_04:Maybe I can drop drop it off in my sleigh. Me and Mrs. Bourbon Claws are hoping the sleigh.
SPEAKER_02:I mean, if we if we work it out right, you come up, you come up for Christmas, and then we have the Christmas party.
SPEAKER_04:I I would have I would have I would have to come up. I would have to drive the sleigh up because it takes it takes a lot. I have to have all my stuff to to fry that turkey in.
SPEAKER_02:So you so there you go. You bring up all the stuff and whatever, and then I'll I'll ship back the the fryer and everything, and you guys fly back. No, do the opposite. Drive up and fly back. Yeah. There you go.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, she's got a big brand new Yukon with TVs that I can sit in the back and watch while she's driving. I can watch Christmas Vacation.
SPEAKER_02:We watched that last night.
SPEAKER_04:She's got me this little miniature Clark doll. Go get it. Oh my gosh. I did over here on my table.
SPEAKER_02:I did never I've never seen the start of Christmas Vacation. Never. Oh my god. Not when they went out and when they went out and they froze when they froze, when they but it is mine. I like it, but I've never seen it from the start where they froze Juliet Lewis getting the Christmas tree. Merry Christmas.
unknown:I woke up tomorrow with my head zone.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I I I've seen it a million times, but I never I'm watching it, and Juliet Lewis is freezing. And I'm like, I've never seen the start. It's like I've seen the movie a hundred times, but never saw it from the start. So we watched it from the start last night, so that's the first time I've ever seen the whole movie. All right, so we got the finish, and this is Super Nash. You going first?
SPEAKER_04:No, I gotta do the taste. Okay, Clark. You gave it a six, she gave it a five, and I'm gonna give it a five. You're giving it, so many different Christmas flavors. I mean, every set makes you fall in love with it, and uh like like I like you said, sitting by a warm fire, you know, Christmas tree lit up. It's Christmas in a bottle.
SPEAKER_02:All right, you got the five.
SPEAKER_03:All right, so you're down to the finish on you.
SPEAKER_02:So this one, what do we got for years? I didn't see an age statement on it. Somewhere I have glasses around here.
SPEAKER_04:There's not an age statement on it. Or on the I'm gonna say the girl in the shop says somewhere around the seven or eight. Yeah, seven to eight years. So it's pretty dark.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_04:I could look at that dark color, that dark amber.
SPEAKER_02:I'm gonna tell you, there's a dark, dark chocolate chocolate finish on this. Like, like the kind of cacao. It's no, it's not dark chocolate, it's cacao finish. Like pure chocolate with no sugar on the finish. That's what I'm getting on it. And it's long, it lasts for a good minute.
SPEAKER_04:I'm getting clove and cinnamon and that that that tart apple.
SPEAKER_03:A real tart apple, like a like a Granny Smith apple that's going in the pie. And then the sweetness comes in.
SPEAKER_05:He's just good.
SPEAKER_02:Dustin Marlowe says, Look here, Super Nash. You're closer to me than Jeffrey Mueller, so I'm needing some of that fried turkey.
SPEAKER_04:Hey, that's right, Dustin. Dustin lives Dustin lives up in Gatlinburg.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, he's you and it's probably in Gatlinburg. It's probably clear than you but super but but he lives in Knoxville. No, he said Gatlinburg. And and Bourbon Nash and Gatlinberg and Mrs. Bourbon Nash like like are like they're they're like you guys are like this with Gatlinburg.
SPEAKER_04:Dustin comments, and he's like, you keep me so busy, I'll never get a chance to get it. Oh, it's me.
SPEAKER_05:It's not me.
SPEAKER_04:I never get a chance. I'm sorry, Dustin.
SPEAKER_02:It's not me. Isn't Gatlinburg just over the pass from the casino?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you drove it, you drove over, you drove it, you drove over the icy roads to get there.
SPEAKER_02:All right. Baked apple, then dark chocolate. I I I gotta join you too when it happens because we go we've been through there a couple times.
SPEAKER_04:Matt and Shauna come down to Gatlinburg a good bit.
SPEAKER_02:Oh yeah, yeah, that's that's Matt's favorite place. What what what yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:King's family distillery and all of there. All right. Not only that, but I mean, shoot, we could rent a great big huge cabin. Oh god, fry a couple turkeys out on the back there.
SPEAKER_05:Where are we going?
SPEAKER_02:So I will say for a Christmas bourbon, this gets a five on the finish.
SPEAKER_03:I'm gonna say because the way you talk about the finish on it. Yeah, we'll let you we'll let you finish up with the finish.
SPEAKER_04:This all the flavors carry through. That's what I love about this. What you're tasting up front? You start to want some honey? And it's a nice warm hug, like you said, it's just a medium hug. It's not real burning sensation.
SPEAKER_02:So supernatural, I've I want to ask you this. Why do you put the hug in the finish?
SPEAKER_04:Because the hug is right where it's finishing up, going down. I I poured the back of the throat back in the throat and going down.
SPEAKER_02:I poured Roxy.
SPEAKER_04:That's why I get that warm hugging feeling right across the chest there. That's what's what I think a hug is.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, that's fine. That's why I asked.
SPEAKER_04:And I'm gonna give it a five. And here we are in a Mrs. Bourbon gloss.
SPEAKER_05:Well, I'm sorry, but he gets a butt up up for me because this is probably the best Christmas bourbon. And I'm not, you know how I am about a lot of them, but this just is everything for me as far as the smell and the taste, the finish, the way it goes down, the hug on it. It's it's perfect. And I it's just good.
SPEAKER_02:So, in other words, we we probably should probably should have bought another bottle.
SPEAKER_05:Maybe, because I'm the one that told him to buy this one.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, and she she um she's been opening it up. I come home and on the week last weekend and all she had it had it open in the world. It's so cool. I think she's been mixing it with her eggnog.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, but she should.
SPEAKER_04:So it's very good. I mean, it's it's it's a perfect mixture, Sherry.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, just 100%. It's this is the evolution of actually understanding and liking bourbon because initially when he did it, you weren't you you it's not like you hated whiskey, but it wasn't like it was your favorite thing, right?
unknown:Right, right.
SPEAKER_02:But as you start to get these high-end expressions, it starts to change, and that's how Roxy went through. And and as it goes, you cheers to your first podcast. Yeah, baby. And and you've done you've done fantastic, and you're giving this, if I'm not hearing wrong, a five with a but up up.
SPEAKER_06:Yes, yep.
SPEAKER_04:But up up. Yep, and here are the totals. Mrs. Bourbon Claws gave it an 18 out of 18. Out of nine. And you you gave it a 19 out of 18. So that is the over overall total of 18.5. That is fantastic.
SPEAKER_02:And out of yes, out of that. It's just like everybody, what that once uh, I mean, there are bourbon of the year, preservation, old man winter, and then we give this an 18.5 on a Christmas bourbon. There's a reason when we went there, we decided to do that, correct?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:All right, so let's finish. What's crazy is we're almost to the point where we're at the level of 45 minutes, even though I missed 30 minutes of the podcast on the audio, but we'll just throw that out there on the audio.
