Hey there and welcome back to another episode of the Re-shape Your Health podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Morgan Nolte and today I am delighted to bring you one of our sibling members. Her name is Janet. She's been successful with our program and she's here to share her story. So Janet, thank you so much for joining us.

Yeah, absolutely. So we were talking a minute ago about stress and the importance, the influence of stress on our lives. And I went on two vacations, one where I was just stressed the whole time and I gained a bunch of weight, even though I didn't eat that much extra. And then a recent one where I wasn't stressed and it was really my favorite vacation because I chose to just not stress about things that I normally would. And I can go into a little bit more of that.

So for instance, I was diagnosed with chronic lupus about over 30 years ago. so everything I do physically has to be calculated, like everything. So it's affected the amount of exercise I can do. It affects the amount of exercise I can add in. It affects how long it takes to me to recover from exercise. I mean, it has affected everything. Now add to that, I was diagnosed with diabetes type 1, type 2 diabetes.

in 2011. And so then the diabetes and the chronic lupus worked against each other because whatever I was trying to do for the diabetes, I couldn't do because of lupus. And so there was this constant war going on in my body. And so I have extreme high ambition, ability, physicality, and I couldn't implement some of that because my body would just resist everything. And so I've had this experience with stress and with just

being afraid of everything I would do physically, like how is this going to affect my health? How long am I going to have to recover? And especially vacations where my exercise was different and things like that. And so I've had some really ⁓ interesting experiences with stress, foregoing stress, like my last vacation, which was actually the vacation I enjoyed the most of any I've ever been on. And so then let me just give you a little history of my weight, my weight loss. So I have

Endomorphic tend to tend to put on pounds, lot of obesity in my mom's side of the family. ⁓ About 15, more than 15 years ago, I lost 40 pounds and kept it off. But then I got diagnosed with diabetes and then they were giving me low doses of insulin. But my blood sugar levels were not good. ⁓ They were too high most of the time. And so I was able to keep my weight off. But eventually I got a specialist a few years ago.

And she said, no, you have type one late onset diabetes. So then I was put on the pump and then also with ⁓ age-related hormonal changes and the pump, then that I was putting on pounds again. And that was really distressing to me because I have worked so hard to keep my weight down to a reasonable level and to be in balance. mean, balance was never a thing in my life, but I was trying all the time.

And so then once I was putting weight on, and one of those was I went on a couple of vacations back to back and I ate a little bit more, but not enough to gain. I gained between the two nine pounds. And that was really distressing to me. Cause I really only ate enough extra calories to gain one and a half pounds. And it was the stress. was like me stressing me overworking my body. And that I just, I just threw my hands up. like, what am I supposed to do now? I was so frustrated.

And so then this is now I had joined Zivli since then, but I didn't have a big why of why to lose weight. So my, my story can be defined in two big whys. The first why after I gained those nine pounds was I don't want to carry any more weight than I have to. I was clear. I don't care if I'm hungry. I don't care. have buy new clothes. I don't care if my skin hangs. I don't want to carry it anymore.

So then I sat on this quest. Now, the thing that Zivli has done for me is when I joined the program, I did every single test you recommended. And that was hugely beneficial. The blood Because the blood work, all the blood work, and everything gave me knowledge that I didn't have before. In fact, one time I did a health program through work, a weight loss program through work, and my daughter's like, why are you doing that? You know everything about health and weight loss. And I'm like, there's always more to learn.

So one thing I'm really glad is the specific things I've learned from Zibli, but also getting all the tests done. I had hard knowledge. So when people would say, go on this medicine, I'd say, no, my CAC test says I'm at zero risk for heart attack. I'm not pre-cardiac because I'm diabetic. And so I just had all this knowledge and I went from taking nine pills a day now to two now. And some of those pills caused me fatigue.

And so I am doing so much better. I went, and so I started in June of 24 and I was up that nine pounds and I was so frustrated. And then I lost 25 pounds over nine months and I was super happy, but then came in my second wife, which was even more exciting. So I was pretty good. I felt pretty good. like, you know, I can, I can realistically maintain this weight loss because I don't, I'm not interested in anything unless it's sustainable.

And then my son for Mother's Day took me on the most epic horseback ride on the planet. So we were in the mountains, we went down a ravine, through a river, across, up through the woods, back across the river, and up to this place where we were galloping. And when we were galloping, I injured my back. And that has never happened to me horseback riding.

And so after that, was June of this year, I realized if I ever want to have a horse, which was a lifelong dream or ride more, I need to become leaner and stronger. So then that was my second why, which was I want a horse. And so that impelled me and compelled me to lose even more weight more than I thought I could. And I'm actually at the lowest weight I've been in over 35 years. But the thing is my pain is.

almost completely gone. I'm off those terrible medications. My insulin dose is about half what I used to dose. My insulin sensitivity is way up up. Now a couple of the things that really helped me were the testing, the blood work. Another thing was advice on weight training. I started doing that because I wanted to avoid having falls as I'm aging.

And so that was key and the advice on weight training and how to do that effectively. The classes, the courses that I took, and also the personal coaching with Lydia was fantastic. Like I was doing some really detrimental things with my sleep. Like I wanted to get up early when it's really quiet and read the scriptures and just center my day, but I wasn't getting enough sleep before then. And so I, I do that and then I go back and take a nap, but I felt really depressed and Lydia's like, no,

you need a solid seven to eight hours of sleep. So now I actually do that, but what I do is what I, get my seven to eight hours of sleep, but then I go on my walk and when I come home from my walk, while I'm stretching, I read my scriptures. So that was hugely beneficial. Like those little teeny tips, like there's always more to learn and just the emphasis on protein. didn't understand that. I didn't understand the emphasis on protein before and after weight training.

I mean, my life has completely transformed and a lot of it is from what I learned through zivli coaching. mean, I was drawn to you because you. Okay. Just to be silly. You don't use a lot of ums when you talk like that bothers me when people you're very conversant, articulate, credible, caring, and those things really drew me to the program. I found about found out about you on YouTube.

And that carried me through like I have found that consistent with everybody I worked through in the program, that extreme level of knowledge, knowledge about LDL cholesterol. See, I got off my statin drugs because I don't need them. I don't need them. And statins can be really difficult on the body and other medications I've gotten off. So I just can't thank you all enough for ⁓ the great service that you're providing to the world.

to guide people and help people gain greater understanding. You know, I maintained my original weight loss of 40 pounds for so many years by counting calories. And then when I got an insulin puff, I had to start counting carbohydrates and I was just beside myself. I'm like, I hate this. Why do I have to do this? But now I'm actually doing macros, you know, my protein, my carbohydrates, but I have the apps and you all have taught me how to use the apps and that has given me complete control.

over my diet. I mean, as much as is possible, I weigh most everything I eat. I mean, I feel like I'm in control. I feel hopeful. I feel energized. I have the best health I've had in years. All of my autoimmune system issues are nearly gone. It's like, it's so inspiring. It's so motivating. And I just can't thank you all enough. So thank you. Yeah, you got me in tears too.

You're welcome. First of all, credit goes to Lydia, you know, your coach. Do you know how we met each other by the way? No, but she's a gym. my gosh. I know. I think it's, I'm constantly amazed at the quality of people that we get to work with like yourself. ⁓ I was the program coordinator for the geriatric physical therapy residency for a year at through Creighton here in Omaha. And she was the resident coming in.

And I loved her instantly. I'm like, oh my gosh, she's so great. And, uh, so she and I kind of went our separate ways after the residency and I started zivilly and independently she had gone through like a six month health coaching program. And then I needed a coach. She was looking to do some of that kind of work and I reached out to her and she said, well, this is serendipitous because I just, you know, went through this coaching program. So she's been such an asset to our team and all of all our team is so wonderful, but.

I wanted to credit because you're the one that did the work, you know, and you're continuing to do so. I always say doesn't matter if you can lose weight. matters if you can keep it off. And before we hit record, I was showing you the emotional brain training module that you haven't even been through yet because it's brand new. And I am so excited for you because I think a lot of people hear stories like this or they get, see their own results, but then they're worried about.

losing the results or weight regain. And I think that this has been such a, we've always had a really strong mindset component to the program, but this, cinches it all up. Like this is, this is best stuff. And I'm really looking forward to going through it so that these amazing results can really last for the rest of your life. And you can continue to improve and just experience so much more joy. Cause I can hear it. Like you are on fire. Your health is.

The fact that you've reduced that many medications and that your pain is nearly gone and that you're able to enjoy these life experiences with your son and actually have hope that like your dream of owning a horse and riding more can come to reality is amazing. And to even think that I had a shred of input into you helping like to helping you reach those goals. That's what brought tears to my eyes. Like what a blessing and what a joy that I get to impact you in that way.

And I just wanted to tell you thank you so much for persevering because I'm sure it wasn't easy, especially early on with like the diabetes and the lupus how you said they were you were as one of my members who had a

fibromyalgia put it, said she had to plan her life around her pain. And it sounds like that's really the experience that you had as well. And so to hear you, to hear that you're free of that is incredible. So thank you for sharing that because I know that each and every story is inspirational to someone in some way and probably in a more specific way than both of us even realized.

that's happened before where someone comes on the podcast shares their story. And then I'll hear from a listener that, that's my story. Like that, that condition, that was my reality. So someone out there has the adult onset type one or the lupus or the issues with weight after, you know, the hormonal changes related to menopause or aging, and they needed to hear that. And so thank you for being generous with your time to share your story. Cause it's really important.

Thank you so much. Well, it's been a great teamwork, team effort. yes, and a lot of, ⁓ like I said, I'm only interested in things that are sustainable. So now I feel completely empowered to sustain my success and even succeed further because of what I've gained, like the tools that we have, like the chronometer and just I've created like wait sheets and I keep track of how many steps and how much I weigh every day and I evaluate them every week and I

track of my measurements because you can be losing fat but not pounds. You can be losing fat but not pounds and so I always weigh and I measure and that's really helpful too. mean there's just little tips that people can use that can be very instrumental in helping them feel like they can continue, like there's a reason to continue. Yeah and I think that that speaks to the two things really speak to. I always look for patterns and qualities of people that are able to lose weight and keep it off.

Number one, you are tracking your progress. You're tracking your food. That's always in the research shown to help. The only reason that people don't want to weigh is because they don't have a neutral relationship with their body or with the scale. that does take some work for some people, but if you can get to the point of neutrality with the scale or measurements or like food, that's a really wonderful place to see a lot of progress.

And number two, you said the weekly meetings with yourself. That's huge. Developing self accountability and that discipline is really important because you just mentioned you went on a couple of vacations in this whole midst of it. You gained some weight, but if you have a system of self accountability, you can always come back to that to quote unquote, get back on track or however you want to say it, tweak your plan, find your plan, always looking at how we can improve and how we can grow and how we can learn.

And I would like to, I'd like you to speak to that a little bit. You mentioned you did a weight loss program through your work and your daughter was like, well, what do you, what do you have to learn? Like, don't you know everything, mom? So what was some of the most, you said protein strength training, ⁓ definitely the blood work. Were those kind of the most influential things that you learned from the course or was that kind of eyeopening for you? Had you ever gone through an online learning experience like that before?

I had not for health, ⁓ except for this one. mean, now the one through work, I've been through a couple of those, but the sure, through Ziv Lee, the main thing was the blood work, learning about protein, learning more about insulin, excuse me, and learning about the different cholesterol, the one where they tell you it's bad, but it's really not, it's more of the minutia of that, the sleep, ⁓ just the,

Total synergistic conversations I had with Lydia that just encouraged me and made me feel like I could do more. Overcoming, you you want to do the personal faith formula. What's your why? And what are the roadblocks? I had three serious roadblocks. One was that I could do it. Two is that I was gonna be hungry.

three is that my skin would hang and well, I guess it's four and that I would have to buy new clothes. I don't really enjoy buying a whole new wardrobe. I like things to just stay the way they are. And so those were concerns of mine. But when I had such a compelling why I didn't care anymore. I just because I watched I watched an online health program and she was very systematic and I learned a lot from them too. And it was just one that I watched. I didn't sign up for anything. And she talked about

being hungry and nobody had ever mentioned that before. Like that if you're going to lose weight, most likely you're going to experience hunger. Now some people don't, but I would say more do and you need to accept that as a fact of life. And I accept that now and I actually relish it because I actually love the feeling of fasting. So I do intermittent fasting and I love the feeling of fasting. I find it very cleansing. I feel like it purifies my spirit and my mind.

And when I eat food after that, it tastes so much better. And so I just felt like ⁓ so many things about somebody saying, well, you're probably going to experience some hunger. Now, if it's severe, there's a problem, you know, but just learning how to deal with that and accept that as a fact of life, it's not an issue anymore. So I actually feel happier when I'm more modulated, when I'm more temperate than,

going on a cruise or whatever and just eating everything and you're full before dinner starts and you're loathing that you get to eat this meal because you don't want to just not show up for dinner. That's not happy. That's not joy. But I have felt so much joy in developing a temperate personality because I tend to be this person that overdoes whatever I do. And especially with food, you know, that's one reason why about 18 years ago I gave up sucrose because except for negligible amounts,

I gave up secrets because I'm too drawn to it. It has too much of a control over me. And so I just gave that up and it's been so liberating to do that. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. But regardless of that, just becoming a more temperate person, more modulated has been so great for my soul. I rejoice every day in the fact that I feel in control of my destiny.

And that's not a feeling we humans have a lot. We feel like other things are acting upon us. But I feel empowered to act in ways that magnify my health. And I was talking to, I work in airline reservations and I was talking to a customer and he was really saying some profound things. And he said, well, everybody slows down. And I thought, I'm in my early 60s and I have no intention of slowing down. fact, I'm busier and more.

energized than I ever have been. And I, hope I don't ever slow down. That's my goal is to just keep energizing more because that's the life that I want to lead. And I feel like that's a strong possibility with the tools I have. mean, there will be a difference between an 80 year old and a 40 year old, but my 80 year old, I'm telling you is going to be better than my 40 year old. I guarantee that because I'm already better now. Yeah. Gosh, Janie, you are so awesome.

You are so awesome. I love hearing all of that. And I know as you were talking about the hunger, the thing that kept going through my mind is essential pain. You don't know this yet because you haven't been through the module, but in emotional brain training, we talk about the essential pain of any action. Any action that you take has an associated essential pain. One of the essential pains of fasting or of losing weight is hunger. And so the tools help you get really, really good at identifying the essential pain.

but then also identifying your earned reward with whatever action you're trying to take. And just like you said, like one of the, huge wise is the horse, right? That brings, that's going to bring you what, like freedom, authenticity, like some really major, major reward. And you have to have that as almost a magnet to help you overcome the resistance of the essential pain. And so, yes, you're just going to love it so much. I'm excited for you to go through it.

And what's really odd is when I, ⁓ you know, I feel like truth can be proven. And one of my first tenants when I started was prove things, prove it, does it work? And, and the other thing is ⁓ you were talking about essential pain. So I found it interesting and I was journaling and I journal every day anyway, but how our body oftentimes wants to resist the thing that will bring it the most health. Like when that pendulum starts to swing,

there's going to be a ton of resistance. But if you are so motivated, you just go with that. And if you stumble, you get back up right away because I just thought it was so weird how our body resists the thing that will bring it the most joy and the most health. Isn't that ironic? Crazy. It's so crazy. Yes. And it's a little bit sad. ⁓ That's it's because of your amygdala, the stress center in your brain. doesn't want you to change. It wants you to stay the same.

And from my experience, the solutions that it offers to us actually don't help. So a really good example of wires was I get my comfort from eating carbs and sweets to the point that I'm fat bloated and full of shame and regret. That's one of the wires that was in my brain. And as I was working through that one, I realized, Hey, that doesn't make any sense. ⁓ because I'll eat until the point that I'm physically uncomfortable.

So how am I getting from, how do I get my comfort from something that actually makes me physically uncomfortable? This doesn't make any sense. And so that's exactly what you were saying. And so a lot of the times we just have to rewire those thoughts to create ones that are rational and that serve us. And Dangia, I'm so proud of you. And I know that you're...

I feel like this is just the start, honestly, for you. feel like that's what it feels like. You're going to be 80 years old, hopefully riding your horse and having that experience with your family. I have one more question for you. Do you have such a strong vigor and why and zest for life? And if someone's listening to this and they might be a little bit depressed or apathetic or they don't have that strong why,

but they have a lot of ⁓ barriers and obstacles like yours where you didn't want to have to buy a new wardrobe. You didn't want the loose skin. What was the other one? I was afraid of hunger. Yeah. Hunger. Those were your obstacles. And it wasn't until you found a couple of really strong whys that you could overcome those essential pains. What advice would you give someone to find their own why that's really, really strong to help them overcome their own obstacles?

Yeah, Morgan, that's a great question. The question I have for them is, why do you think you're here? What made you reach out? There's some underlying pain that's causing you to reach. Because they say when the pain of the status quo is greater than the pain of changing, you're going to change. What is the reason you came? What were you seeking for? What is missing?

that's causing you pain. There's some, you have a why. You just need to identify it because you wouldn't be looking into this if you didn't have some sort of why, if there wasn't some pain and depression, overwhelm, hopelessness. We have been there. I have been there. I used to weigh, oh gosh, now when I think about it, I used to weigh 70 pounds more than I do now. So when I talked about losing 40 pounds, that was from my highest and I used to

you know, weigh well over 200 pounds. And, um, and I understand that depression and sometimes I felt like at that time, I'm doing the best I can right now and just gave myself grace. I, I, I knew I believed that I would eventually overcome, but I wasn't at a position to do that at the time. So just keep that in your back pocket. You're here for a reason. There's some desire in your soul to want to improve. We naturally want to improve.

We don't want to be stuck. Nobody wants to be stuck. There's a reason you're here. Just start small. You have to start small. Start with the food apps. That was a huge thing. Once I was really clear about losing weight, knowing how to run the food apps, the chronometer was huge. In fact, I have to tell you a side story. My husband has kind of the mesomorph body, which is the generally athletic body. And he put on a little bit weight since we're 60s now.

we did, he says, there's this, there's contest at our, at our local recreation center. Do you want to do it for losing weight? And I'm like, yeah, I might as well get credit for what I'm already doing. And it was funny because we, we, had introduced him to chronometer before. And so he already had a working knowledge of that. So we did the fat loss program at our local gym and he actually won the men's division because he used chronometer and he was very dedicated.

He hasn't maintained that because he hasn't had a clear why. But the fact is, any little skill you gain is helpful. Any skill you gain. Any, there's a reason you're here. Think about that. What drew you to the program? What's causing you pain that you want to overcome? We want to overcome. We want to be triumphant. And it is our nature to do that. It is our nature to progress.

Who wants to be in the best elementary school they've ever been in? No, nobody wants to be there anymore. We crave progression. We crave progress and overcoming and overcoming is joy. And that is the reason to face those fears, face that pain, face that depression, get off the couch, do one thing, do one tiny thing every day. Even if it's the same thing, do it.

One of the ways that I... Go ahead. Yeah, one of the ways. One of the things that I've done is when I've finished my calories, because I'm down to the lowest calories I've really ever done for weight loss before. Because I'm like, okay, well, if I want to lose more, I'm to have to go down more. because only exercise can only do so much. And now I'm kind of at the lowest threshold of whatever I've ever done on a regular basis.

I'll be in the kitchen and I'll eat my concluding calories and because of chronometer, I can get it into the exact amount. You know, I weigh my food or whatever. And then I'm like, well, you know, I still feel hungry, but you know what? I'm getting out of the kitchen because I tell myself, I feel vulnerable right now. Even just talking to yourself about what you're doing. If you're sad and you're eating a bag of potato chips, you're like, I feel sad. I'm eating potato chips to comfort myself.

Even if you tell yourself that, it creates this awareness that can help redirect you. And sometimes over the course of the last couple of years, I've overeaten at night. But now when I do that, I say, you know what? I'm feeling a little deprived. I'm feeling a little sad or whatever. I'm going to eat this one thing, and then I'm done. I'm not going to overeat 700 or 1,500 calories or whatever.

If I go over maybe it's 150 because I maybe didn't balance what I ate earlier in the day and I felt like I needed this one thing that I didn't get. That's okay because that does not destroy my progress at all. But I'm just honest with myself. I feel vulnerable right now. I feel sad right now or whatever. Just naming something gives you power. And so naming, I feel depressed. You know what? It's human nature to feel depressed at times. It's human nature to feel depressed if our

Our health is poor. If our weight is high, that's okay. That's a good indicator that it's time to take action. Or like I said, you don't have to conquer the world today. Take one tiny step. Do one thing. Make yourself just a list of for the week. I'm going to do seven things this week. One thing each day. And, just start a journal. Start some way of tracking it because tracking is so powerful. helps you see.

The progress you've made. In fact, I want to show you my little, ⁓ weight. Yeah. These charts that I've created. So these are my measurements. So when I start a new page, then I'm measuring every week, no matter what I'm measuring. So I can see progress, how much I've lost, maybe I didn't lose. And then these are the, ⁓ these are the reasons why I started. And then here's, here's my weekly thing of I'm sure it's backwards, but.

every, every week I wait, I'd say, were my average calories? What were my average steps? What was my weight and how often I went to the gym. And so you don't have to be as specific about it as that, but just something where you've got a record of where you started, how you feel some kind of document, whether it's on your phone, whatever you.

are significant. Everybody, everybody told me I should write a book about my life because I've had this incredible, you know, rags to riches sort of speak in the abundant things of life. I'm not rich per se, but I'm rich in relationships. I'm rich in my family. I'm rich in a lot of great things. And they, you know, they say, you should write a book. Well, you know what? Honestly, everybody should write a book because everybody's story is amazing. Everybody's story.

And you can start writing your own book, be your own best friend. Do you know that actually handwriting things is therapeutic to your brain? Like write in your own words how you're feeling and just keep, just get a little dollar notebook or whatever, something to validate yourself, validate yourself, something to look at and give yourself ⁓ grace when you've maybe stumbled a little bit because it's going to happen.

It's not if it's going to happen, it's when. You'll stumble. Everybody does. And then you can give yourself grace and say, okay, this is why I started. This is what I'm going to do to pick myself up. And it works because we're giving ourselves grace. We're validating ourselves. And another thing we can do is, you know how, like when you're over, like you're talking about your kids and they can overhear you do that about yourself. Janet, you're so cute. You're so.

I am so proud of what you've done. Tell yourself what you would say if you were talking to your little self. Let yourself hear you talking to someone else about you. Janet has done such a great job. Especially about the question of finding your why and why are you here? What are the pains?
