Show Notes

In this episode, I chat with microbiologist Kiran Krishnan all about immune health. He talks about how our immune system is designed by nature to have all of the traits and capability to handle a virus like Covid. The question is, is your immune system in a condition where it can.

Kiran digs into what can throw off the immune response and condition that makes you more susceptible to Covid. He shares the two large components (innate and adaptive) of your immune system so you can understand better how your body works.

There are lots of tools our immune system has -when it comes to Covid the innate response is coming in and basically over-responding (which is what makes you feel sick). The symptoms you feel, come from the immune response to the pathogen. It's not necessarily the pathogen itself. The pathogen is trying to do it's thing and multiply and then your immune system comes along trying to do it's response.

Get ready for a mind blowing lesson that honestly we all need to hear and start to understand, especially as we head into cold and flu season on top of Covid being a prevalent one.

The immune system wouldn't exist without the microbiome, it doesn't have a capability of functioning without the microbiome. The microbiome acts as the neighborhood watch.

What is your microbiome?

In many ways your microbiome and immune system are one in the same. Your microbiome is basically the collection of organisms and all their genetic elements that live and on the host. So, inside you, on you every part of you is full of microbes there isn't a part of you that doesn't have microbes in it.  Nothing in and on your body is sterile, everything has microbes.

Inside your body there's a layer called the mucosal system. This is one of the most important layers for people to understand that exist. The top layer shows up when you are sick in the form of mucous. The mucosal layer is the largest barrier in your body. We used to think it was the skin but it's not, it's the mucosal layer (every orofice). Every way a bacteria or virus or fungus can enter your system goes through the mucosal layer FIRST. This is a checkpoint and barrier to protect the inner surfaces of the body.

Every millimeter of the mucosal is covered by microbes already. We have over 40 trillion microbes that live in our mucosal layer, that's the microbiome.

This is also the system where new bacteria, viruses and fungus enter into. So, think about the job of your immune system. Kiran digs into this so you understand and it's so fascinating that we now know this much about how our body works.

He also talks about how quickly a a viral load can increase when the immune system doesn't recognize the virus once it comes in. It happens when your microbiome isn't working right for you in certain areas of the body.

You need to fix the foundation for your immune system to function properly. No amount of throwing vitamin C or D at yourself as a 'bandaid' will fix this.
