Beyond Yourself 7/7: Stop. Breathe. Receive. #SlowDownSunday
It’s Slow Down Sunday, and I want to remind you of something we all forget in the rush to achieve—pausing isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.
When you intentionally slow down, you create space for clarity, for reflection, and for the kind of renewal that fuels your next move. Rest isn’t wasted time—it’s what gives your work, your purpose, and your relationships their real power.
In this episode, we’ll talk about how to press pause and actually receive—receive rest, receive insight, receive the gifts that only come when you stop running for a moment.
Whether you’re someone who feels guilty slowing down or just needs a reset before the week ahead, this is your reminder: rest is productive. It’s part of the cycle that keeps you balanced and fully alive.
🎧 Press play, take a breath, and let’s make space for what really matters.

Welcome to Slow Down Sunday
Speaker 1Welcome , welcome back to the Sweet Spot . Congratulations , you've made it to Slow Down Sunday . I'm Dr Sweet , if you don't know me . I'm a board-certified sports and performance psychiatrist and over the years I've seen how reflection and rest and recovery can be just as powerful as the hustle high performers often have to engage in in order to execute whatever task is in front
The Sacred Pause Explained
Speaker 1of them . Today , we're exploring something I call the sacred pause , and we're going to do something a bit different . Today we're actually going to experience it .
Speaker 1All week long we've been talking about the power of giving and how giving can seep into every part of our life and be a powerful hidden force . You know , sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity during a forced pause . When a plague actually closes university , he was forced to slow down and it was during this period of pausing that he actually discovered gravity . Similarly , einstein had his breakthrough about relativity during a quiet daydream , and right now the neuroscience is showing us all over that something fascinating is happening with human
Science Behind Strategic Slowdowns
Speaker 1beings that they actually get revelations and epiphanies and discoveries during moments of silence and stillness and when they pause , when we consciously slow down , our brain shifts into what scientists call the default mode network . That's , default mode network . Think of it as your brain's deep thinking mode , and what the studies show is that we are most innovative and most alive and creative when we are in this default mode network pattern . Creative insights actually increase by 33% during deliberate slowdown periods . How amazing is that ? But here's where it gets really interesting , and I see this with top performers . All the time we resist these pauses . I think what it is is that we've been taught that slowing down means falling behind . But what if I told you that some of the world's greatest achievers actually scheduled time to slow down ? Did you know that Maya Angelou had a morning reflection ritual where she slowed down , reflection ritual where she slowed down ? And that evolutionary biologist Darwin , charles Darwin had his thinking path , a daily walk where he let his mind just wander . And guess what ? Modern research shows executives who practice strategic pauses make significantly better decisions .
Experiencing The Sacred Pause
Speaker 1Okay , now I would like to give you a gift the experience of a sacred pause . Don't worry , this is not a deep meditative exercise , and it doesn't matter if you're driving or can't fully participate . Just listen to the framework and try it later when you can . Let's begin First . Let's give ourselves the space it creates . Go on Now . The gift of silence . I want you to notice the quieter thoughts that usually get drowned out Now . The gift of stillness Feel the wisdom that emerges when you're not rushing . And finally , the gift of synthesis Let your mind naturally connect the dots .
Weekly Challenge and Wrap-up
Speaker 1Okay , what you just experienced , that brief pause , just pausing like that to give yourself the gift of space , the gift of silence , the gift of stillness and the gift of synthesis in just those 30 seconds . So amazing . That brief pause , research shows , improves your brain's ability to process information up to 40% . And when we practice mindfulness with our athletes , this is part of what we do . Imagine giving yourself this gift more often . So here's what I want you to try this week on Slow Down Sunday .
Speaker 1Before each major decision or transition in your day , give yourself a 30-second sacred pause . Give yourself a 30-second sacred pause , not trying to figure anything out , not trying to solve problems , just to be . Can you do that ? If you can do that and I'm not expand your sense of time and enhance your performance . You will feel better . You will give your physiology a chance to reset . You will give your mind a chance to speak to you and remember .
Speaker 1In a world that's always telling you to speed up , slowing down isn't just an act of self-care , it's an act of power . My friend , sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause Until next time . Keep embracing the power of the pause . You know , I had a friend his name is Chip and he would always tell me in college pause for the cause . I never understood what that meant , but I suspect I get it now . Pausing for the cause we are the cause and without us , our realities don't exist . So , just like our cell phones , we should
