Late-night podcast where I speak with PhDs about their research subjects, their decision on studying it and its importance throughout academic life. A podcast of entertainment and education, whose aim is to approach students and graduates who want to go through their future careers inside or outside of academia with a PhD and for those who are on a moment of uncertainty in continuing their studies further, as if we are having a drink and talk about PhD culture at a lounge on a late-night summer.

Alec Dawson
Academic Biography:
In December 2020 I finished my MA degree at Swansea University, having focused on the ethnogenesis of the Sueves and the Vandals. After teaching in a local school for almost two years, I subsequently began my PhD at Swansea University in October 2022, with my thesis on Late Antique Rule in Hispania and the Role of the Regnum Suevorum. Since then, I have presented papers at international conferences in Spain and the UK, including the renowned Celtic Conference in Classics. Alongside university teaching responsibilities, I have published book reviews for the journal Plekos and jointly chair a departmental seminar series.
Carys Hughes
Carys Hughes is a PhD candidate in Ancient History at Swansea University

David Finch
PhD: Researching about the literary and critical reputation of Arnold Bennett.
His aim is to find the purpose of Bennett's literary fame, but most importantly what led other dominant critical voices of his time, and some contemporary ones, thought about him and how he overcame them. To support his research and his argument, Finch is applying Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital theory.

Dr Michael Gerharz earned his PhD in Computer Science, and he is an expert in effective communication and what makes a great public communicator. Effective communication is a skill every PhD student must master, yet many struggle to make their complex research understandable to a lay audience. Ella Harford
Ella Harford is a PhD student at Swansea University in history. Her thesis is titled ‘Women and Sexual Deviancy in England 1770-1830’, which focuses on representations of sex and adultery amongst women in 18th century print culture. She holds a master’s degree in Eighteenth Century Studies from the University of York. Her broader research interests include the familial lives of aristocratic and royal women, having written her previous dissertations on Georgiana Cavendish, the Fifth Duchess of Devonshire, and Queen Victoria.

Felicity McKee
PhD: Exploring the history and different types of disability in Britain in the 19th century.
Felicity explains the challenges that disabled people had faced during that century, comparing it to today's issues that they still struggle for equal rights and accessibilities, despite the wide-range advancement of medicine and societal perspectives towards them, and the future of disability that may affect a great percentage of the world's population.

Freja Petrie
PhD: Head Impacts and Concussions in Women's Elite Rugby.
While she investigates this issue, she uses neck strengthening exercises as a research methodology solution that can help to reduce the scale of head concussions that can happen unexpectedly on women players whether during or after several rugby matches.

Gabriela Rădulescu
PhD: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, through radio wave astronomy strategies during the Soviet Union.
Gabriela Radulescu is a PhD graduate in History of Science at the Technical University in Berlin.
Gabriela's passion for her research led also to share it through her podcast in her native language, Romanian: Anthropologie Interstelara, alongside other current projects related to her PhD.

Henry Bohun
Henry is currently a PhD student at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). He graduated from Swansea University with a B.A in Egyptology in 2014, and from the same institution with an M.A in Ancient Egyptian Culture in 2015. His main areas of research interest are kingship ideology and royal and ancestor veneration, with his PhD focusing on these concepts during the early Ptolemaic Period. Henry has helped organize a number of academic conferences in the last few years, which have focused on bringing together researchers from across different disciplines.

Ilana Horwitz, PhD, is an assistant scholar in Jewish Studies and Sociology at Tulane University, New Orleans and has written several books, including The Entrepreneurial Scholar. A New Mindset for Success in Academia and Beyond.

Bella Winton, a recipient of the Swansea University Research Excellence Scholarship, specialises in Greek Hagiography from Christian late antiquity, focusing on their value as sophisticated literary narratives. She has an Ma also from Swansea University in Ancient Narrative Literature with her thesis focusing on Ancient Greek religion.

John Rogers
PhD: Researching local administration and non-elite perspectives during the reign of Psamtik I in the 26th Dynasty (664-610 BC).
John's research focuses on Psamtik I, an Egyptian king who is shown as a case study for the study of changing ideologies in the creation of kingship, in this case Psamtik I himself, through local administration and non-elite members viewpoints while using Assyrian and Anatolian sources.

Louisa Hardwick
PhD: Researching Virtual Reality (VR) for people with limited physical mobility.
Louisa's passion for travelling and background with disabled people led her to explore a gap in VR and how it should suit people with limited physical movement, and who cannot have the chance to travel to a country they wished. With VR, Louisa's ambition is to change the paradigm of this new reality which is becoming more popular for the newest generations, but also for older ones! The chosen case studies for Louisa's research were Machu Picchu, Kenya and Borneo

Natalie Jarvis
Natalie Jarvis is a PhD graduate from Swansea University, researching the identities of disabled volunteers. Balancing a full-time PhD, part time-work and motherhood may seem like an insurmountable task, but for Natalie, it's a reality she navigates with grace and resilience.
