MM: Grow Into Who You Are

Aaron Degler

We share why we transitioned from a general-access gym to a women-only training studio and why we don’t wish we had moved sooner. The heart of the change is culture, standards, and a designed community that supports every woman at any stage.

• lessons from thirteen years of a public gym
• choosing a focused mission over serving everyone
• building community through intentional touchpoints
• designing empowerment into programming and coaching
• culture as standards, not slogans
• why readiness matters more than speed
• how timing and self-development shape good decisions

Welcome back to a mindful moment. Recently I was asked about M2B Fitness and our opening M2B Fitness as a female women's only facility where we only women for small group training to use the facility, other times besides classes. And I was asked about that and asked if I wish I had done it sooner. But prior to that, had a for 13 years, had a public gym open to anybody and everybody, all types of memberships, male, female, just open up to general public. And recently, within about the last six, seven months, transitioned in closed Synergy Fitness and opened M2B Fitness, where we just are a female-only facility. And when they asked me that, do you wish you had done it sooner? Thinking back over the 13 years of Synergy Fitness and all the things I learned. And I and I my answer was no, I don't. Because if I had done it any sooner, I wouldn't have been ready. I had to first become the person I am to open M2B Fitness, where we had M2B fitness for a while on my training side, moving it into a female-only facility is a big move from, you know, really you have male and female at Synergy Fitness, and now narrowing your market to just women only. And you know, my response to that was no, I don't wish I'd done earlier because I had to grow into the person that I needed to be to be able to facilitate that. And M2B Fitness Training Studio is so much different than Synergy was. Synergy basically opened Synergy because I didn't want anybody else in in the town to open a gym. I wanted to be the first one. So I did, didn't really have any business experience, didn't have any of that, how to connect with people. Just there's a lot of a lot of problems, a lot of issues that I didn't know. I didn't know how to do things, how I had to learn those things. So over 13 years, I learned a lot of things. But I also learned one of the probably the biggest parts, and as I look back about, you know, synergy, some of the things that worked, didn't work, I've applied those to M2B Fitness Training Studio. And I realized it has to be a community. It has to be a connection with those inside the walls of M2B Fitness Training Studio. How do we connect with them one-on-one? How do we connect with them on social media? How do we connect with them via text, via email? How do we connect and and really be able to have a community? And prior to opening M2B Fitness Training Studio, I really didn't fully understand that. How do we grow a community? How do we set the standard? And and that and the culture, and that is the culture we create. We we have a culture of one of empowerment, of come as you are, come where you are. Doesn't matter, you know, if you're looking to lose weight, if you're looking to gain muscle, if you're looking to tone up, if you're 75, if you're 19, we have a place for you. And we've created a culture that is inviting to that. We've created a culture that says, no matter your age, fitness level, activity level, wherever you are, come join us and be a part, and we're gonna make you feel like you are a part. We're gonna empower you to feel strong, to feel powerful no matter where you are. And I didn't fully understand that in my earlier years of Synergy Fitness. And part of that Synergy Fitness, the gym business taught me that. Constant contact with clients and members over the years taught me that. But it was also working on myself and self-development over those years that helped me fully understand what was needed to incorporate everybody that walks through the door into M2B Fitness and the training studio, whether it's clients, whether it's members, whatever, whoever enters those doors, they feel the same way. And it's a collective feeling and energy when they walk through the door. So sometimes we wish we had done things earlier, but we weren't the person we needed to be to be able to make that happen. So sometimes it's up to us to grow into the person we need to be to make those things happen. And they happen at the times they need to happen. So thanks for joining me on this week's mindful moment. I'll see you right here next time on Mindful Moments.
