5 Lies that Are Ruining Your Health

Jolie Erickson Season 5 Episode 4

Learn the key lies that are side tracking your health goals, keeping your from thriving, and putting out your hope.  I have been thinking about the lies that are ruining your health. So there are things in the background you might not even realize them that are ruining your health, that are really undercutting what you want for yourself. And I wanted to go through some of them because I do believe that the road to health, to wellness, to feeling your very best self, so much of it has to do with your mindset. So much has to do with it has to do with what you think, what you believe, because what you're thinking, what you're believing is creating your actions and your actions are creating your outcomes.

Hi everyone. Welcome to the Jolie Life Podcast where we discuss health and food and nutrition and wellness and living our very best life. I am Julia. I am the founder of Julie, and I am super excited you are here today. So I have been thinking about the lies that are ruining your health.

So if you're not getting the outcomes that you want, we have to look at the action and then the source of the action. Why am I doing this? Why am I choosing this? And so there are certain lies that are ruining your health lie. Number one, I have a family history of fill in the blank. I have said this to myself, I say this all the time. The number one question in a intake form at a doctor's office are the family history questions. Because I think they reinforce this belief that if you have a family history of X, you are bound to get X. If you have a family history of heart disease, you are bound to get heart disease. Hello, that is not true. Genes load the gun, your lifestyle shoots the gun. I hate this question and hate is a hard word because it completely utterly discounts the power we have.

It completely utterly discounts the nutritional, the dietary, the lifestyle choices that influence whether one has X disease or doesn't get X disease. And so literally disclaimer here, don't do this, but this is what I do. Literally when they ask for family history, I say, I have a family history of nothing. No disease in my family, no heart disease, no high blood pressure, no pelvic disease, no cancer, nothing. Because my mindset is family history is only part of the equation and it is not the determining part of the equation. This is different when we're dealing with hereditary diseases like say cell anemia, but we're talking about the general things that we work on as it relates to our health. I have a family history of X does not mean that that needs to be your destiny or your reality. You have control over that. And study after study intervention after intervention shows that diet choices, nutrition choices, lifestyle choices, can reverse the ship and can determine where the ship goes.

And so just because you have a family history does not mean that this is your reality. So that's lie number one. Get that out. When you hear yourself say that just because I have a family history does not mean that this is my reality, my choices will determine whether or not this becomes my reality. Second lie, I don't want to feel deprived. Deprived from what? Deprived from a wonderful life deprived, from springing out of bed, deprived from shopping at a regular store, deprived from feeling really good after a hard day deprived from running after your grandkids, deprived from being able to valenti and climb in Puerto Rico with your kids. I don't want to feel deprived is not true because if you're saying, I don't want to feel deprived, therefore I'm having this birthday cake, I don't want to feel deprived, therefore I'm having a double scoop of ice cream.

I don't want to feel deprived, therefore I'm having a second helping. I don't want to feel deprived. Therefore, I'm having this yummy sandwich which is laden with calories and cheese and fat and this, that and the other. You are depriving yourself, but you're depriving yourself on the other end. You're depriving yourself long-term. You're depriving yourself of living your very best life. So I don't want to feel deprived is a lie. And when you hear your brain tell you that, you just say that is a lie because if I don't choose to bypass this now I am depriving myself of something I want later. And we look at the long view. We want the thing that we want now and later. We don't want to have it now so that we can't have this abundant, fabulous life later. So I don't want to feel deprived. Deprived from what and when I hear that myself or when a client says that, I'm like, okay, so if you choose to eat this or choose to do this because you don't want to feel deprived, what are you depriving yourself of later?

You said this was your goal. Did you change your goal? Do you want to deprive yourself of reaching that goal? Do you want to deprive yourself of those life experiences? It's a lot. I need more. And the reason I put this in the list of lies is because this so often is a way for us to feel like we're doing something when we're literally doing nothing. We are letting opportunity pass this by. I need more information. I'm not saying that you need to go into things blindly or you shouldn't be thoughtful and analytical. I am the last person to say that considering that is my true nature, I could literally be in a library all day and be very happy. No, what I'm saying is that wisdom comes in action. Wisdom comes in action. And if there's something you want to do, start acting. I'm going to even say start acting first. So if there's something I want to do and I'm going to come back to weight loss, my thing, I want to lose weight. If I want to lose weight, I'm going to start doing it.

I'm going to take the first step and I say take the first right action and that's the action that comes to mind. So for me, the first right step when I was on this path was I'm going to go to the gym every day and then when I'm at the gym on the treadmill, I'm going to read books about health and figure out how to lose weight. Second best step, I'm going to stop drinking. I drank diet soda, but that stuff is awful. I'm going to stop drinking diet soda because it's so sweet and it's making me crave other sweets. So that was the next best thing. Did I do all the research on whether or not artificial sweeteners impact weight loss? No, but I just knew that that was something I could do in the direction and I could find out the information later.

So I need more information like rather, a vegan diet is best or a vegetarian or an abo to a vegetarian or pescatarian. You can get utterly lost in the details. I say start doing and then fine tune it as you do it, learn it as you do it, dive into it as you do it. Don't let the endless search for information be just another way to avoid taking action, taking real true action that's going to give you results. I should know this. I should know this. I should know this. Somehow we have a mistaken belief that we should know how to nourish ourselves, that we should know how to feed ourselves. I should know this. So many clients will say to me, well, I should be able to do this. I should know this. I should be able to do this for myself. Why can't I do this?

I keep trying and nothing's happening. Why can't I do this? I'm here to tell you, no one teaches us how to eat in this country. No one teaches us how to feed ourselves. No one teaches us how to eat. The information that's out there that we learned in health class is now outdated and most of it was wrong in the first place. No one teaches you this is not your fault. This is not something you should know. And literally, I will say that they tried to confuse you who the they is. I'm not going to say, but they try to confuse you. It goes back to my daughters nutrition bars, healthy, no GMOs, no added sugar, all organic. When you read the label, it's like organic garbage. It's all different forms of natural sugars, but it's basically organic garbage. So they try to confuse you.

It's hard to read a nutrition label. It's hard to walk into whole foods and know what actually is the good food and what actually isn't the good food. It's hard to know should I be eating brown rice or should I be eating canoa? It's hard to know is oat milk the best for me or is almond milk or cow milk? It's hard to know that. And people producing the food are making it hard for you to know. So it's not your fault. You shouldn't know how to do this. And so many times thinking, I should know, this stops us from seeking help, stops us from seeking guidance. No, you don't know and it's okay that you don't know. When I was like, okay, I need to figure this out, what did I do? I started reading everything I could get my hands on because I didn't know.

That was the first step. Realizing I didn't know. I didn't know how to dig myself out of this ditch. I did not know for the first six months after my kid was born, I kept trying and trying and trying, thinking, I should know it. And guess what? The skeleton did not change. My body did not change. There's no reason you should know this. No one has ever taught you, we don't teach people how to eat. It's my job, it's my mission, it's my love. It's my desire to teach you how to eat. But you shouldn't know this. You don't. It's okay. Don't let that stop you from action. Read books, talk to people, listen to the podcasts. Do your own research. Seek help. Seek nutritional counseling. When I counsel people for nutrition, there are so many light bulb moments and the shocking thing is they sometimes surprise me because I've known these things for so long.

I'm like, of course people should know this, but no, no one teaches you these things. So let go of, I should know this. And the last that I'll bring up, is this worked before? No, this is the second to last. This worked before so many times, particularly when we're in our forties, fifties, and sixties and things aren't working right. We go back to what we did when we were 30 and we do it for a while and nothing happens, and we go and we do it again and nothing happens. And we're like, why? It worked back then. Why doesn't it work now? Well, hello, your body has changed. Your body is different. What worked in the past may not work anymore. I hear it all the time, like I used to eat like this and I never gained weight. I was just naturally thin and suddenly I have weight.

What worked in the past doesn't mean it's going to work. Now you are a changing, evolving person. And so your approach to yourself, your approach to your food, your approach to your wellness, it has to change and evolve because you're a changing and evolving person. Like me, for instance, right now, I am loving intense workouts. I am loving weightlifting. I'm loving soul cycling. I'm even loving me a little bit of solid core. I am loving it. A year ago, only thing I wanted to do was hot yoga. I literally was thinking about signing up for a year of hot yoga. That's the only thing I wanted to do.

It worked in the past for me. It felt great. And then suddenly one day it didn't feel great anymore. I wouldn't say it didn't feel great, it just didn't hit that dopamine spot I was looking for. So what worked in the past doesn't work now. So now to hit that beautiful little spot of joy, I need an intense workout. And probably a year, two years from now, it might change. It might be I'm back to yoga. It might be I need to swim. It might be I need to play tennis. Who knows? But just because it worked in the past or just because it was a thing you did in the past does not mean that it works. Now. You are an evolutionary person. You are changing, you are evolving. And the last is all or nothing. And this is the big one. This is the lie that ruins our health thinking it's all or nothing.

It is black or white. And I will say there are gazillion shades of gray, and the only failure is not getting up and doing it again. So all or nothing is a lie, is a lie is a lie. Everything you do matters. Every step in the right direction matters. Every step you take is of value and it gets you closer to your goal. So rather do your diet perfectly or not, it doesn't matter. It matters that you're constantly trying and it matters that you're constantly trying to do it better. Let's say you are doing 75 hard. I've done 75 hard so many times with my girlfriend. Let's say you're doing 75 hard, which is this program where you commit to doing the set of things for 75 days consistently, and you screw up and you miss a day and 75 hard. You actually have to start all over again and go again.

It's not really like that in life or for your body. Let's say you get to day 25 and you screw it up. It's okay, you can start with day 26. It's a new day. You can do it again. You can do something new again. So there's no all or nothing I have to completely stop doing. I have to completely stop eating ice cream or I'm off my diet. No, it's not like that. You can indulge and then the next day you get back on. Simple as that. You can have a week off of your exercise and then you get back on, you can get sick. And when you get better, you get over your cold. Guess what? You get back on the program, you get back on your routine. It's not all or nothing. It's not like I ate perfectly until four o'clock and then I had a bag of m and ms.

I'm going to eat like crap for the rest of the day. No, you ate perfectly until four o'clock. You had a blip, you had m and ms, and then you ate perfectly from four 30 to night. That's fine. That's valid. That puts you closer to your goal. All or nothing is a lie, and it keeps you from getting to where you are. Every time you hear a thought come up, and particularly those repetitive thoughts like odds, just my family history, I don't want to feel deprived. I need more information. I should know this. This worked before. It's all or nothing. Question it, question it, question it, question it. Because most likely it's not true. Most likely there is an alternative truth. When I encourage you to go after your dreams, go after your wellness, go after your health, go after feeling absolutely fabulous. It is worth it.

And that practice of going after your wellness, it really just colors your entire life. It transforms your entire life. Not only because you're transformed and you approach life differently, but it gives you the skills to handle hard things and to accomplish bigger and bigger and bigger goals. So that's it for today.
