EXPLAINER: The Longevity IV That Killed a 27-Year-Old
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A healthy 27-year-old walked into a Bronx wellness center for an NAD+ "longevity infusion" — and was dead within the hour. The man holding the needle wasn't licensed to practice medicine anywhere in the US. Robert Lufkin MD breaks down the Elizabeth Baron case: what actually happened, what NAD+ can and can't do based on the real evidence, why the billion-dollar med spa industry operates like the Wild West, and the three-license checklist that can protect you before anyone puts a needle in your arm.

Key takeaways:
- NAD+ is real biology — a coenzyme central to energy production and DNA repair — but no randomized trial has ever shown an IV NAD+ drip slows aging in humans.
- IV NAD+ is legal yet not FDA approved for any specific application, and the marketing has sprinted far ahead of the evidence.
- An IV bypasses every natural checkpoint in your body. Treat it like surgery on your blood.
- Before any injection or infusion, verify three licenses: the person, the building, and the bottle. If a clinic can't answer instantly, walk out.
- The fundamentals that actually move healthspan — muscle, metabolic health, sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar — cost almost nothing and have mountains of evidence.

The IV Drip That Turned Fatal
SPEAKER_00This July, a healthy 27-year-old woman walked into a wellness center for a routine anti-aging IV drip. And within the hour, she was dead. The substance in the bag is one of the hottest products in longevity medicine right now. Celebrities swear by it. Clinics in every major city sell it. And the man who put the needle in her arm was not licensed to practice medicine anywhere in the United States. I'm Dr. Robert Lufkin, and today we're talking about the longevity infusion tragedy in New York and what actually happened, what NAD Plus can and can't do, and how to protect yourself in the wild west of longevity clinics.
What Happened At The Clinic
SPEAKER_00Part one. On a Sunday afternoon in July, she went to the Bearishit Lifestyle Center, a holistic wellness storefront in the Riverdale section of the Bronx for an intravenous infusion of NAD plus, a compound marketed as anti-aging therapy. According to prosecutors, she went into cardiac arrest almost immediately after the IV started. She was rushed to New York Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. The man who administered the infusion, a 55-year-old Louis Roja Cabrera, ran the center. He claimed a medical license from the Dominican Republic, but held no license to practice medicine in New York or anywhere in the U.S. He was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession. As the District Attorney's Office noted, administering NAD plus through an IV requires a prescription from a licensed medical professional. Her official cause of death is still under investigation.
NAD+ Biology Versus Marketing Claims
SPEAKER_00Part two What's Actually in the bag? Now, NAD plus is real biology, but that doesn't make an NAD plus drip real medicine. NAD, which is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a coenzyme your cells genuinely need. It sits at the center of energy production and DNA repair, and its levels also decline as we age. That's why it's caught the attention of serious aging researchers, and then the marketing machine. IVNAD Plus has been promoted by celebrities like Haley Bieber and Kendall Jenner, and it's sold in med spas as a sort of fountain of youth drip that repairs DNA, boosts energy, and fires up metabolism. The therapy is legal, but it's not FDA approved for any specific application. And here's the line to remember. No randomized trial has ever shown that an IVNAD plus drip slows aging in humans. As one physician commentator put it bluntly, no randomized trial has shown intravenous NAD plus to do anything for aging, addiction, fatigue, or cognition. Now the oral precursor research, the legitimate science, is still working out whether raising NAD levels actually translates into any human benefit. The drip skipped straight past the evidence and went to market.
The Med Spa Safety Gap
SPEAKER_00Part three, the Wild West. Here's the bigger story. This wasn't a one-off accident. It's a booming billion dollar industry operating largely without referees. The med spa business has exploded, selling lunchtime body contouring, discounted injectables, and IV drips that promise to burn fat and cure hangovers, while regulation has really failed to keep pace. And the casualties are accumulating. Three years ago, almost to the day before Elizabeth Barron died, a Texas woman named Jennifer Cleveland died after an IV drip also at a med spa. Last year, two attendees at a Las Vegas anti-aging conference were hospitalized after peptide injections. And a Miami man was charged in connection with death at a psychedelic retreat. New York State is now investigating unlawful med spas across the state. Now, why does this keep happening? Because longevity medicine is genuinely booming and every boom breeds counterfeiters. The real science of aging is advancing faster than at any point in history. And that's exactly what gives the fakes their cover story.
Three Licenses To Check First
SPEAKER_00Part four The Three Licenses So how do you protect yourself? Here's the frame. The more medical the root into your body, the more medical the oversight must be. A supplement you swallow passes through your gut and your liver. But an IV bypasses every one of your body's natural checkpoints and goes straight into your bloodstream. An IV is really sort of surgery on your blood, so treat it that way. Before anybody puts a needle in your arm, check three licenses. The person, the building, and the bottle. That's the checklist a medical aesthetics compliance expert laid out after this case. The provider administering the treatment must be licensed. Two, the facility must be licensed. And three, the product must come from an authorized, approved manufacturer. If a clinic can't answer all three of these instantly, turn around and walk out. And ask the boring question. What's the randomized trial evidence for this? A legitimate longevity physician will tell you honestly, including when the honest answer it's promising but unproven. The more impressive the promise, the more you should demand the boring paperwork. Part five.
What We Know And Don’t Know
SPEAKER_00Now the honest caveat. As of today, the medical examiner has not established Elizabeth Barron's cause of death. Toxicology is literally still pending, and prosecutors themselves say they cannot establish causation until the autopsy is complete. So the accurate statement is not NAD plus killed her, it's that an unlicensed practitioner performed an invasive medical procedure and a young woman died. NAD plus biology remains a legitimate and active area of aging research, and this is not an argument against longevity medicine. It's rather an argument against medicine without a license, evidence, or accountability. None of this is medical advice. It's a reason to ask harder questions.
The Real Healthspan Takeaway
SPEAKER_00Part six The Takeaway Here's the takeaway. The tragedy isn't just one clinic or one compound. It's that the longevity gold rush is outrunning the guardrails, and people paying the price are the customers. The fundamentals that actually move your health span, muscle, metabolic health, sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar cost almost nothing and have mountains of evidence. And there's no drip that substitutes for them. So when something new and shiny comes along, let the evidence catch up before your bloodstream volunteers.
