welcome to This Week in fitness by ATFW, where we crunch the latest fitness business headlines all in under five minutes. I'm your host. Krissy Vann, and here's what's making news. Airbnb is moving into the fitness and wellness market as part of its 2025 summer release, the platform launched Airbnb services in 260 cities. This new feature allows users to book services like personal training, massage, yoga, hit and spa sessions directly through the app, whether or not they're staying at an Airbnb. The broader Airbnb services platform spans 10 categories, including pet care, home cleaning and grocery delivery. Fitness is one of the featured options and offerings range from single workouts to multi day programs built around travel itineraries. Trainers must be certified with Airbnb, stating providers average 10 years of experience and must complete identity and credential verification. Pricing starts under $50 and all bookings are handled through the redesigned Airbnb app. The move presents a major opportunity for independent fitness professionals to connect with new clients through a trusted digital platform. At the same time, it introduces new competition for local gyms and studios, especially among travelers who may opt for private in home sessions over drop ins at physical locations, ifit is entering the Pilates category with its acquisition of reform RX, known for high end connected Pilates reformers and instructor led digital content. Reform RX serves both home users and boutique studios in the US and UK. The deal expands if it's commercial and at home offerings, and includes the integration of Pilates content into its digital platform. The move reflects the growing demand for low impact functional fitness options and positions if it to compete in a premium connected equipment market. Planet Fitness is bringing back its high school summer pass. The program allows teens age 14 to 19 to work out for free at participating locations in the US and Canada from June 1 through August 31 now in its fifth year, the initiative has waived over $300 million in dues since launching in 2019 teens gain access to equipment, trainer, support and app based workouts. A survey conducted by Wired research highlights the mental health benefits, with 90% of teens saying exercise helps them feel happy, and 93% saying it helps manage challenges. Xponential fitness has announced a CEO transition. Chief Executive Officer Mark King plans to retire due to health reasons. He will remain in the role until a successor is appointed. King joined exponential in June 2023 and helped stabilize operations while focusing on franchisee health and customer experience. The company, which owns brands like club Pilates, pure bar and Rumble is holding its analyst and investor day at the New York Stock Exchange on May 29 key executives will share updates on strategy and long term growth priorities. Meanwhile, Anthony Geisler is launching a new boutique fitness company called Sequel brands. The new venture brings together several wellness concepts already operating across the US. Pilates addiction, led by former Xponential President Sarah Luna, aims to open up to 100 studios over the next 18 months. IFlex stretch studios, led by Verdine Baker, focuses on assisted stretching. Beam light sauna is also part of the portfolio, combining infrared and colored light therapy with sauna experiences, BODY20, a tech driven strength training concept using electro muscle stimulation rounds out the initial lineup. All four brands have leadership ties to Xponential fitness. And sequel will be featured at the Athletech News Innovation Summit this June in New York City. And finally, Apple Music and Universal Music Group are teaming up on sound therapy. The exclusive audio collection includes reworked songs using sound waves and frequencies linked to focus relaxation and sleep. Track features artists like Katy Perry Imagine Dragons and Casey Musgraves. The content is organized into three listening modes. Focus tracks use gamma waves and white noise. Relaxation includes theta waves and sleep tracks feature delta waves and pink noise. This project builds on Apple's expanding presence in wellness through platforms like Apple fitness plus and health kit.
