Sometimes people choose to forgive—or at least say they have. However, over time, the person who was hurt may begin to use the betrayal as leverage in the relationship. They may expect you to tolerate behavior you once would have rejected, pressure you into situations that make you uncomfortable, or dismiss your concerns by bringing up your past mistake. Whether directly or indirectly, they may remind you that because of what happened, you no longer have the right to object, set boundaries, or hold them accountable. So, this is why it is so important, after a betrayal, to have an honest discussion about what the relationship will look like moving forward.
