Soundbite Episode 008: Weightlifting 101
A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started
Dr. Angela introduces a beginner-friendly, evidence-based guide to resistance training, noting guidelines recommend strength training two days per week and aiming to help novices start at home or in a gym without needing expertise or fancy equipment. She explains key benefits—strength, function, muscle mass, bone health, reduced metabolic disease risk, and maintaining independence with age—and emphasizes there’s no single “right” way to train for life. Resistance can come from body weight, bands, dumbbells, machines, or household items, and beginners should focus on basic movement patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry/core. She recommends 1–2 sets of 8–12 reps per movement, using a challenging load that still allows control and leaving 2–4 good reps in reserve, with progressive overload over time by adding resistance, reps, sets, or harder variations.

08:06 Your First Workout
Your initial workout might look like this:
- Squat: Chair sit to stand or goblet squat.
- Pull: Resistance band or dumbbell row.
- Push: Wall or counter push-up or a dumbbell press.
- Hinge: Hip hinge or Romanian deadlift.
- Carry: Farmer's carry or core exercises.
Perform one to two sets of each with 8 to 12 reps, choosing a resistance level that challenges you yet allows for control. Spacing your workouts with at least a day's rest is essential for recovery.
