Welcome From Costa Rica
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the podcast. If you are new here, I'm Ray. I'm a presswork facilitator and schematic coach. And if you aren't new here, welcome back. I'm so glad that you are tuning in for today's episode. So this cleaner, I am in Costa Rica. So if you hear anything in the background or if the audio isn't as great as usual, my apologies in advance. We are still here. I was originally supposed to get back last week, but my flight was delayed with the snowstorm that we just had in New York. And I did record another episode while I was here just before I recorded this one. And I might actually release it next week, so we'll see. But anyway, I was recording that episode and I was kind of feeling like reflecting on like I was seeing what was happening in New York and what was happening in the world, specifically in Minneapolis. If you're tuning into this and you're from the US, there's a lot of like political unrest that's going on. And I was just seeing like what is going on in the world, and it was not feeling great. And it felt a little weird to like release an episode without talking a little bit about it. And I don't usually talk about politics at all. I'm not necessarily like a vocal advocate. This is, I think this might be the first time I'm actually talking about something like this on my podcast. Uh, but just seeing all of the violence toward immigrants and the political unrest and everything that's happening in Minneapolis, I really felt like I couldn't release an episode without at least acknowledging it. And I also just want to share something that I found that was interesting, which is a framework that really highlights all the different roles that someone can play in social change. And this is something that I saw another teacher, Melissa Moffitt, she had shared it on her Instagram, and it really resonated with me. And so I feel like sharing more about it here might be helpful. Um, and maybe it will resonate with you as well. So Deepa IR is an individual who has created a framework on a social change ecosystem. And I will share a link to a visual image of what it looks like in the show notes. And basically, it is a map that reminds us that we're not all meant to show up in the same exact way, and it has 10 ways, and there's no hierarchy, and these roles can change over time and they can be fluid, but they each serve their own purpose. And the reason why I think this is important to acknowledge is that depending on your personal nervous system and your lived experiences and your strengths and your challenges and your capacity, you're going to show up different in terms of what it is that you need. And that can that's why it looks a lot different for so many different people. So some might be compelled to act immediately when it comes to social change, others might feel like they're frozen, some might get completely burnt out from being, you know, maybe in misalignment with some of these 10 different ways to create change. And some might find that others aren't doing enough or others are doing too much or whatever the case is. So I think the real question is how can you sustainably contribute to change and be in relationship with others in a way that feels aligned for you and is it within and and is in with words, words are hard, and is within your capacity. So this image looks like right in the center of the circle is equity, liberation, justice, and solidarity. And then outside of that circle, there are 10 branches for ways of showing up. And I'm gonna share about those 10 branches now. And as I go through these 10 branches, I'm sure that some of them will ideally resonate with you. And again, these are in no particular order. So the first is guides, and they offer wisdom, context, and grounding, and they help others orient when things feel confusing or overwhelming. The next is weavers, these are people that connect people, ideas, and groups, and they build bridges, relationships, and collaboration across differences. Then you have experimenters, they are trying new approaches, building and creating bold ideas, and they are embracing through trial and error. So they are learning through trial and error. Then you have frontline responders, they are acting very quickly in moments of crisis or urgency. They are often visible, they are immediate, they are very action-oriented, they are going to be seen. Then you have visionaries, so they imagine and create possibilities that don't yet exist. They help movements dream beyond what the current reality is, beyond current limitation. Then you have builders, they create structures, systems, and organization that make change more practical, more sustainable, more long-term, more durable. Then you have caregivers, so these are people that help others emotionally and physically, so they help with rest, healing, and make sure that human needs are honored. Then you have disruptors, so they challenge systems, they challenge norms, they interrupt the you know everyday business as usual perspective to make injustice more visible and more seen. Then you have healers, they address trauma, grief, and collective wounds, and they focus on restoration and bringing a sense of wholeness. And then lastly, you have storytellers, and they help to shape narrative, they help to give meaning, they help to create meaning, and they help people understand why change matters and what's possible when change happens. And I think this is just a really, you know, helpful information to have and talk about. I think it's powerful because it removes that pressure of feeling like you need to do everything, and it allows you to show up in a variety of ways to make an impact. Um, it can also help with staying in alignment and preventing burnout and preventing yourself from like forcing yourself to do something that's not necessarily in alignment with you. And it allows you to shift through all of these ways, you know, certain seasons of your life you might um advocate in certain ways, and it might look different in other seasons. So this model really resonated with me, and I thought it might resonate with you too. So, yeah, I hope that you enjoyed today's episode. I hope that you have an incredible rest of your week and incredible rest of your day, and I will talk to you soon.
