Your gut is your second brain, influencing everything from digestion to mood and energy levels. This deep dive into gut health explores the surprising connections between your microbiome and conditions like anxiety, skin problems, hormone imbalances, and even high blood pressure.

We begin with the fundamentals - what exactly constitutes good gut health and why the balance of microorganisms in your digestive tract matters so profoundly. When your gut microbiome is balanced, you feel amazing; when it's not, the consequences can manifest throughout your body in unexpected ways.

The gut-brain axis reveals why "gut feelings" are more than just metaphors. Your digestive system produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine that regulate mood, with research showing that improving gut health can enhance mental clarity and emotional wellbeing. We explore six practical strategies to support your gut - from increasing fiber intake to managing stress and prioritizing sleep.

Guest Sally Baas from Plexus Worldwide shares her personal journey from chronic migraines and digestive issues to balanced health through targeted gut support. She explains how plant-based supplements can address persistent issues like candida overgrowth and blood sugar imbalances, while emphasizing that sustainable health improvements take time. Unlike quick-fix solutions that offer temporary relief, healing your gut addresses root causes for lasting wellness.

Whether you're struggling with digestive problems, mood issues, or chronic health concerns, this episode offers actionable insights to transform your health from the inside out. Ready to feel your best? Pour something in your glass that makes you happy and join us for this essential conversation about the foundation of good health.

Speaker 1:

Today we're diving into a topic that affects every aspect of our well-being gut health. I told you this episode was coming, so get ready for all the info. From digestion to mood, energy levels and even sleep, our gut plays a vital role in how we feel every single day, so grab your glass of wine or your green smoothie whatever you pour in your glass that makes you happy, and let's talk about it. So, first of all, what is gut health? Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms in your digestive tract, and your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microbes that help digest food. It produces essential nutrients and even regulates your immune system when your gut microbiome is balanced, you feel good. You feel amazing. When it's out of whack, you can experience bloating, fatigue, brain fog and so many other annoying symptoms. You've heard several of my guests talk about it, and today you'll hear more from me and my guest, sally Boss, with Plexus Worldwide. I'll give you a basic rundown on gut health before we jump in with Sally. Then I'll let her share more in our conversation, including products that she recommends.

Speaker 1:

So how does gut health affect the body? All right, your gut is the foundation of your immune system. Around 70% of your immune cells reside there, and a healthy gut helps reduce inflammation. It improves digestion and supports weight management. And poor gut health, on the other hand, is linked to issues like irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune conditions, skin problems and even hormonal imbalances. So it makes sense that it would affect your bowels, right? But I find it fascinating that issues like eczema and hormones can be related to your gut as well, and maybe we should count how many times the word gut is said today in today's podcast episode.

Speaker 1:

All right, so how does it affect your mind? Your gut and brain are directly connected through the gut-brain axis. If you've ever heard of you have a gut feeling about something. That's because your gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood. When your gut is inflamed or unbalanced, it can contribute to anxiety, depression, brain fog, like I mentioned before, and research shows that improving your gut health can lead to better mental clarity. We all want that, and emotional well-being. I venture to guess we would all like to feel our very best, so let's learn how.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so what can we do to support our gut? Here are some simple but effective steps that we can take, and, again, sally's gonna be sharing more information in just a few moments. But first off, you can eat more fiber, so whole foods like fruits, vegetables and legumes feed the good bacteria in your gut. I personally feel like if you hit your protein levels and your fiber, everything else falls into place I mean for the most part. So I'll be sharing more about fiber soon. That is just another topic, so we'll be coming talking about that very soon.

Speaker 1:

And the second thing that you can do is incorporate fermented foods into your diet, so yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir. That would introduce some beneficial probiotics. However, fermented foods are not for everyone right in the beginning, so I do think that consulting a functional medicine doctor would be a great place to start. I had Cameron Snyder with Fit Muscle and Joint on last week and I do recommend a visit with him or finding someone in your area. So the third thing that I would recommend is make sure that you're hydrated. Drinking plenty of water supports digestion and it keeps things moving smoothly. This is one thing that is preached by so many experts, and it's a simple step you can take immediately.

Speaker 1:

Number four, I would say reduce processed foods and sugar. These can disrupt the balance of your good bacteria and lead to inflammation. With all the additives and junk in our food today, it is no wonder all of us aren't sick all of the time. And then five manage your stress. High stress levels impact gut health. So practices like meditation, yoga, deep breathing, morning rituals it'll all make a difference. You heard me talk about reducing stress and lowering cortisol on my previous episode. I highly recommend you go back and listen to that one, and if you have trouble finding it, please reach out. I'll get the link sent to you via email or text. You guys have that information. I'll be sharing that again at the end of the podcast as well, so you can grab a pen so you get that.

Speaker 1:

And then, lastly, number six, I would say prioritize your sleep. So poor sleep affects your gut microbiome. So I would aim for seven to nine hours of quality rest, and I'm not even going to go into sleep right now. It's so important, but it can be extremely frustrating when you can't sleep. So, again, that's going to be another topic that we will dive into as well. So, in a nutshell, your gut is like your second brain. It influences everything from digestion to mood and energy. By making small, intentional changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can transform your health from the inside out. Let's jump in even further with Sally brand ambassador for Plexus Worldwide. Hey, sally. Hi, it's so good to see you. You, too, you look amazing.

Speaker 2:

Thank you, so do you. I love your hair.

Speaker 1:

Oh, thank you. I am at the library because our internet went out and I'm like I have a podcast interview. I've got to do something.

Speaker 2:

Thank goodness for local libraries and Wi-Fi right?

Speaker 1:

Yes, absolutely. Well, are you bronzed from your recent trip? Is that why you look so good?

Speaker 2:

Yes, we had great sunshine. Good I'm in the sun, so yeah.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I love it. Yeah, but you also had a scare, like you guys were on a cruise, is that right?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, we were on a cruise. We'd had one stop in Key West, and then we were on our way to the Bahamas from Key West. We were about 40 miles off the coast of Miami and we were in a session, um, and that morning for three hours, and all of a sudden we felt the boat, just you know, really rocking more than it had been. You know, you get a little bit of the sway. I don't know if you've ever been on a cruise, but you get a little bit of that feeling. And so we're like, hmm, that's really weird, what's going on. Um, but, and then the captain came over the loudspeaker and he's like, well, he said there's a ship, a small boat that we can see, that seems to be in distress. Um, it's, we have to legally turn around and make sure they're okay. That's, you know, that's, that's what they have to do. So what we felt was our boat doing a complete 360, turning around to go check on this little boat. Well, um, we were. We still stayed in session.

Speaker 2:

We were in session, but there were a lot of guests that were along on the trip, that weren't in the session, that were watching this and sending us pictures, and while we were sitting in session oh my gosh and it was this small boat and first, when we pulled up, there was two people and then more people just kept coming up out from underneath the baseboard of the boat and there ended up being like seven or eight men and one woman and they were ramming into our boat and it looked like they were on our boat and um asking for food and ropes and um, I don't know.

Speaker 2:

Of course there's protocol, you know, for all of that they wouldn't be on board or anything but, um, once we found out they were okay and we notified the coast guard, they fled and so we don't know what happened. Wow, I'm sure Coast Guard went to them and found them, but what we're hearing is that it's not an uncommon thing to have happened from people coming from the Bahamas to Miami. They're trying to get there illegally. So we don't know what was going on. We really don't know. It was scary, it was unsettling.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, seriously, everybody's like pirates and I'm like pirates and you know, and I'm like, oh my word, I didn't think pirates existed anymore, but apparently they do. But anyway, so we're just glad that it turned out the way it did.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yes, I'm glad you're okay.

Speaker 2:

For sure, so it was a good cruise.

Speaker 1:

Yes, good, well, wonderful. So, to fill the listeners in, a while back I had shared on one of the podcast episodes that my husband was supposed to go in for surgery and we found out that his blood pressure was ridiculous high. At one point it was 253 over 141. And now he's had a few other issues and the last time that you were on the podcast we touched a little bit on gut health and, just you know, health. Overall, we didn't dive deep into some products or anything, but I wanted you to come back on because I really feel like this will help him, but it's going to help so many other people too. So I'm going to let you take it from here Get as geeky as you want with the science and all your products. I want to hear it all.

Speaker 2:

Yeah Well, thanks for the opportunity to hop back on here with you. I appreciate that and I'm sorry for what your husband is going through. But honestly, we hear, we hear that a lot, that is a lot of what people struggle with is high blood pressure, lipids, cholesterol, a lot of things like that, and a lot of people come to Plexus with those issues, hoping Plexus will, you know, help them. And we are, I, you know, I always have to say I am not a medical professional or a doctor in any way and we never claim to heal or, you know, anything like that. The products don't. But we do have testimonies, we do have um third-party studies, scientific background and everything, um, you know, validating what people are experiencing with Plexus products, and some of that has been, um you know, lower blood blood pressure, um blood sugar balance, uh, better cholesterol, better lipids, all of that, and so we have seen that happen many times. And if you do your own research on gut health and cholesterol, gut health and blood pressure, you will see that there is a relationship there. And a lot of times there is a relationship between several health issues that we might have in your gut health. Your gut is your second brain, 80% of your immune system is in your gut, and so when that is sick, overrun with yeast overgrowth, candida, then your body's going to have some issues. It's going to have health issues Like I had chronic migraines for years, I had terrible digestive issues, I didn't sleep well, my blood sugar was unstable, I was crashing and craving all the time, I was feeling like I needed to eat everything and eat sugar to get my sugar stabilized, and that, of course, makes your mood go up and down, and so I was struggling with that.

Speaker 2:

I was struggling with which is hypoglycemia, basically low blood sugar, um, and it was all also helped people with diabetes, type two and all of that. And then, um, I was struggling with some anxiety. I was struggling with, um, fibromyalgia, some autoimmune stuff going on, and so just, I was doctoring, I was trying to figure out what was wrong, and you know it was my gut health, and I started taking Plexus, which are plant-based supplements that are all natural, basically taken and driven from ingredients and plants on earth that I feel God has given us for a reason, and I started taking those and they attack bad candida, bad bacteria, yeast overgrowth in your gut and get rid of all of that. And so, in turn, I started having just amazing results with these products, like my chronic migraines that I had been having for years that just would not go away. I did everything and they were going away and I was sleeping so good, like I I in the past, when my sleep I would lay awake forever. I couldn't go to sleep. And when I finally did fall asleep, it was very restless. It was not a deep sleep, it was, and so then I was tired all day the next day, but no energy, right.

Speaker 2:

And um, when I started, uh, taking Plexus products and my blood sugar was stable. I don't know if people know this, but when your blood sugar is unbalanced, you're not going to sleep good. So when your blood sugar is stable, you're going to sleep better. And, sure enough, I started sleeping better. Like I could not believe how good I was sleeping and, um, that's huge. That's huge we need I mean, there is no secret that we need sleep right. God designed us for sleep and we need seven to eight hours of really good, solid rest at night. And so, um, so I was experiencing that and so many other victories and I was like this is incredible, because I didn't want to have to be a slave to a prescription, or you know, and we all know, there is a time and a place for prescriptions and drugs and all of that. I totally agree with that.

Speaker 2:

But there are some things where times, I believe, where that's not necessary and you can get healing and help with. You know plant-based products, and so that's what I love about Plexus they're very clean. I don't feel guilty taking them every day or putting them in my body or giving them to my children. Um, my kids have been on them for years 10 years, um and I have to say we have been very healthy. My kids, when they were little, went to the doctor a lot ear infections, you know, respiratory stuff, whatever and they just don't get sick anymore. And so it really helps your immunity too, um, and because the the ingredients in in Plexus are so specially handpicked where, um, even down to things like they oxygenate your body and your blood and disease can't survive in an oxygenated state, Right, and so it's naturally going to help your immune system and you're going to be stronger and healthier. And so, just, you know, things like that are just so it's brilliant to me. You know that the ingredients are just really designed and and specially thought out and how this is going to work together.

Speaker 2:

And, for instance, another example I love to share is we have a product called Iron Woman and it's an iron supplement, not necessarily for women, but women struggle more with iron than men do, so men can take it, but it's an iron supplement and because a lot of women and men are deficient in iron, right. And so what happens when we get put on an iron supplement? Well, we naturally get constipated, right, that's just what happens. And so, plexus, in all their brilliance, when they designed Iron Woman, they paired it in the same capsule with a digestive probiotic. So when you are taking the iron, you're not going to get constipated, it's going to keep your digestive system moving as it should. So just stuff like that, it's just brilliant.

Speaker 2:

I know the head scientist over there, a doctor, and he is. He's just amazing. I've sat on a board with him, a corporate board, and he is incredible. He is very knowledgeable. He, like I said, with the ingredients and everything that, um, how they design the products, they're just um, it's brilliant, it's brilliant, um. So I I'm just a huge believer in in the products, because and I also work with thousands and thousands of women on my team and surrounding and corporate, um, corporate wide, who have had just incredible experiences, um, with the products in all a host of different health issues. And we and I I don't want to make it sound like it's just for women, because my husband takes it, my boys take it, many, many, many men take plexus products because, um, they're so helpful for all all.

Speaker 2:

You know genders or whatever, but it's funny because more women talk about their health than men do. I think with your husband, um, you know, like I don't know, I talked to men and they're like I don't need to go to the doctor. You know I haven't had a physical 20 years or whatever, and and so, um, so they don't talk about it as much, but they need the products just as much as women do. You know they have health issues like women do, and so it's very, very, very beneficial for both men and women. Um, and so, um, as far as like the science behind it and all of that, I mean I don't get too geeked out, that's just not my personality, that's okay.

Speaker 2:

Very green, some people like green, as in research. You know all this stuff and I do to an extent, but I also am just believing in. You know Dr Hartman at Plexus and what he's telling me and I love to read and learn about it, but I also don't necessarily need it to make a decision, but I know some people do. So we have all of that information. You know all of the information, the scientific studies behind it, the third party testing, everything. Of course, supplements are not, you know, fda approved. None of them are right, and so a lot of people I'm not going to take those because they're not the FDA. Well, that that is not an argument to me, to be honest, because the FDA approved cigarettes and you know that doesn't make any sense, right, it makes no sense. So no supplements or vitamins are FDA approved, but that doesn't mean they're bad, and so, yeah, I don't know if that was what you were looking for.

Speaker 1:

If I can answer any other questions you have, yeah, well, okay, so I have a couple of questions. So, let's say, someone that's listening to this has the same issues. And where do they start with your products to heal their gut? Is it one thing they should take? Is there, are there a few tablets, or what is it that?

Speaker 2:

you would recommend. Great question. So when someone comes to me and they are interested in Plexus and they are struggling with you know, certain health issues or whatever we go over, we work very closely with our people. We we go over um their main health issues. What is it that you know, your top three? So maybe it's weight, maybe it's um energy and maybe it's, you know, digestion, digestion, digestion, your gut health. You know issues, um, it could be um anything you know, but we we go with your top three and then we have a number of com combo packs with Plexus that are different, um, according to what your main focus is. Maybe it's really just weight loss and Plexus is not necessarily a weight loss product, but we do have products that help with weight loss aid and weight loss um, along with getting your gut healthy.

Speaker 2:

Um, quick fixes are not healthy. Yeah, they're just not, and there's a lot of that out there right now and it's kind of scary. It's taken years, and so that's what you know is beautiful about Plexus. It is not going to heal you in just 30 days or 60 days. It takes time. You have to be committed to it and give it time, because it is going to work on the layers of candida and yeast overgrowth that have been there for years. That's going to take time to get to get rid of Um, and so I love that about Plexus it's long-term, sustainable health. It's something that, um, you take and you're going to get results with over time. For sure, um, whereas a quick fix might be, you take it and you're going to go right back to where you were. You know what I mean Before you took it. It's not necessarily healthy all the time, and so when people come to us and they have health issues and they're looking for, you know, something to help them, we talk closely about what their, what their main struggles are, and then we pair a combo pack with that, according to you know what they need the most, and so the main one I would say that most probably 90% of the people start with on our team is the Triplex system, and that is a combination of three products, my favorite three products, and that's what I started with almost 10 years ago and still take to this day my whole family too. It is our famous pink drink. You might hear about the Plexus pink drink. It was designed and originally started in Plexus, and we are like the original OG gut health company. Like gut health started with Plexus, and we're experts in the microbiome and I don't know if you're from the very cool microbiome but, um, you know all of that and it's just super interesting to read all of that. But we're experts in that. That is really our wheelhouse and where we focus. So, um, the slim is designed Um, that is the main one that helps with blood sugar balance, cholesterol, blood pressure, lipids, all of that um sugar and a natural energy, less than 2% caffeine natural caffeine.

Speaker 2:

So it's not going to make you feel jittery or anything like that. It's just very clean, very awesome. It's flavored, um, and are colored with beetroot extract. So everything is from plants. Um, no artificial ingredients, non-gmo, everything. Um, that's the main main um seller for plants.

Speaker 2:

It the like one of our very first products and what we're kind of known for, and then that, paired with two other products, make up the triplex. The two other products are a bio cleanse and that's not a scary. People hear the word cleanse and they're like, ah, you know, I don't want to run a bathroom, and it's not like that at all. It's not a scary cleanse at all. It it's very gentle. Um, it's a magnesium supplement which, like a huge percentage of Americans, are deficient in magnesium, and which also helps you sleep. Yes, it helps you sleep and it's vital, vital to your, to your body. It's a vital nutrient. So, um, it has magnesium in it and um, bio cleanse also, um, is the oxygenated part that I was sharing about, the oxygenates your body and so it helps your immune system and all that, and so that flushes it's basically a flush of your system. And then the other product is our probiotic and that's our ProBio 5.

Speaker 2:

And you hear a lot about probiotics out there, and they are not all equal, absolutely not all equal. If you start doing research on that, you'll see that you don't want a refrigerator probiotic because it has to stay cold. It's not sure going to work when it's in a 98 degree body, when it gets in your body. That makes sense. Okay, yeah, the ingredients are going to die, it's not going to go to work. And so a plexus, brilliant. The capsules are freeze, dried, and so, um, they're not going to go to work until they hit your gut. Where they're supposed to go to work, and in the probiotic is digestive enzymes and antifungals, and not all probiotics have that either. Um, so that's really going to go to work on the um, the silver growth and the candida, and break down the ketocinase and all of those layers and stuff that you have. And so the probiotic is I always use this analogy and it's kind of gross, but it really is Like in our insides and toxins and stuff is gross. So the probiotic comes in and it scrubs the toilet right, it's scrubbing and breaking down all of that. And then the BioCleanse comes along and it scrubs the toilet right, it's scrubbing and breaking down all of that. And then the BioCleanse comes along and it flushes the toilet. It flushes it all out. It keeps your digestive tract healthy. So those two paired together are a powerhouse.

Speaker 2:

Along with the Slim is our triplex and I want to say most people start there and then they'll add on. We have so many other amazing products. We have a natural anti-inflammatory product that is like ibuprofen, but it's natural. It helps with aches and pains, has turmeric in it. It reduces inflammation in the body like huge. I couldn't believe when I started taking it. I could see just before and afters of my face how less puffy it was after I started taking that product. Because of the inflammation and we all have systemic inflammation. We all struggle with that and that can be a huge issue for arthritis and aches and pains and joints and even weight extra weight that we're carrying I don't need to is because of inflammation. So we have a product like that. Quite often people will pair with the TriP Um, we have amazing protein, uh, meal replacement.

Speaker 2:

We have, um, some energy, um, natural energy products. Um, just, we have a natural Gatorade type high electrolyte drink. Um, again, everything's plant-based. It's just a really healthy um option to a lot of junk out there. You know, um, that would replace your coffee or your um. You know your bad habits, your candy bars or whatever. Um and so, um, yeah, so that's what I would recommend for someone coming in.

Speaker 2:

Of course we go over your health issues, but, but the triplex focuses on three main things that we all struggle with gut health, inflammation and blood sugar balance. If you look up those three things, um, they're kind of the standard for health issues, like, if you have inflammation, you're going to have health issues. If you have bad gut health, you're going to have health issues, right, same with blood sugar balance. Like I said, poor sleep and no energy and um, your diet is terrible because you want to eat all the time, you know. And so these, those three things are targeted by the triplex system, and that just it covers all the bases. It's just an amazing, amazing um combo that really helps. So awesome.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, awesome, and I love that you you start with a quiz with someone and walk them through it, because you can just go to a site and just like, okay, I think, maybe I'll start taking this. So I think that it can be dangerous too, and I'm assuming, since everything is natural and it's plant based, it won't interact with any medications. Of course, I'm sure you recommend check with your doctor, but is that true?

Speaker 2:

We always say that check with your doctor if you feel like you need to. I didn't. I trusted you know my upline, my friends or whatever, but absolutely we have ingredients labels that we can send you know with your doctor to your doctor. But you know I have a checklist I always send and I have them fill it out. You know, and circle what they're struggling with so we can help.

Speaker 2:

But some people are a lot of people are on medications and no, it doesn't interfere. And no, it doesn't interfere. The only thing we have ever found and that doctors that I have talked to recommend is, if you're on thyroid medication, just taking the slim drink, like four hours away from your thyroid medication. That's the. It has helped thyroid a lot. So, um, so yeah, um, I mean no, some people are like I have to take a drug test or urine test, right, is this going to cause some false negative or whatever? And no, it won't. It's just plants, right, and it won't affect the birth control pill or anything like that people are worried about. But no, nothing to worry about there.

Speaker 1:

So Awesome, awesome. Well, I can't wait to try it. I have, you know, several guests that have had products on and I've tried some things and I'm actually going to do an episode on a product review. So I want to get us going on it and I want to try it out. So I'm excited that you were here and you could share all that information. Is there anything else that you would want the listeners to know?

Speaker 2:

I think, just be open-minded to something like this. You know, I think, when I started, I was a little bit skeptical and there are a lot of people that are skeptical about plant-based products, and so, you know, I think, just be open-minded to it and, um, you know, do your research, as far as not necessarily looking up Plexus on Google, because there's some yeah.

Speaker 1:

Oh, with anything.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, but more so if you want to research it, look up the ingredients in the products. They are incredible and the benefits to them are just amazing, and so that is what I would recommend when researching Plexus products is is looking at the ingredients. Um, I can give you anything you need to know as far as other you know, uh, studies or scientific stuff or you know, I've all of that information at my fingertips. But, um, but, yeah, I, I think just be open-minded to something like this and, um, you know, I, I just have seen so many people's lives just get changed for the better, mine included, and I'm so passionate about sharing that with other people um, that they can find freedom from those health issues without a prescription, drug or um, you know, or whatever. So, yeah, yeah, oh, that's awesome.

Speaker 1:

Well, thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to be here.
