What If Your Perfect Plan Is Actually Keeping You Stuck?

Robin Hackney

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't lack of knowledge, resources, or talent—but simply waiting to feel ready? Drawing inspiration from a sheep farmer tackling parasites head-on, this episode dives into why "start before you're ready" might just be the most powerful advice for your wellness journey.

We've all fallen victim to the myth of readiness—that someday we'll feel completely prepared, confident, and capable before taking that first step. But the truth? Most success stories begin with someone brave enough to start messy. Whether it's fitness, nutrition, business, or yes, even sheep farming, those we admire didn't wait for perfect conditions. They jumped in, learned while doing, and kept moving forward despite setbacks.

Taking imperfect action over perfect planning isn't just more efficient—it's transformative. Those "failures" we fear are actually our greatest teachers. Remember your first workout class? Your first social media post? Your first attempt at meal prepping? Probably not perfect, but necessary starting points on your journey. If you're afraid of failing, you might also be inadvertently avoiding growth. Let's normalize falling flat, pivoting, and sometimes laughing at ourselves along the way.

Ready to embrace your messy beginning? I'm excited to announce challenges for both men and women looking to build healthier habits, move more consistently, and tackle nutrition in a sustainable way. No perfection required—just a willingness to show up. Message me if you're ready to jump in, unwashed face and all. Because the best version of you starts with that first imperfect step.

Speaker 1:

Hey, there, it's Robin, and I'm back with another episode of the Spandex and Wine podcast, and today's episode was actually inspired by a message I sent to a past guest earlier today, izzy Resnick of Rusty Bell Farms. You might remember her from a previous episode. I was watching one of her Instagram stories about her sheep and how she was working through some parasite issues on her farm and help healing them and how that's just something that happens, and what stood out to me is that she just does the thing. She learns as she grows, she's not afraid to jump in, figure it out, mess up and then keep going, and I thought, yep, that sounds like someone else Me. So I just thought I would touch on that today, because there is a myth out there of ready and if you wait until you know everything or you feel 100% confident, you are never going to start. You guys, there's going to be uncertainty and there's going to be a point where you're doubting yourself. And if most people doing the thing didn't wait until they felt ready, then they wouldn't be doing it. They just got brave right. They just took the step and they did it. And Izzy could have waited to learn everything possible about sheep and parasites and all the farm animals that she has, but instead she learned while she was doing.

Speaker 1:

And I would say, like, taking imperfect action over perfect planning is the way to go. You can learn so much more by doing than just planning it in your head. In that moment you're doing the work and, whether you're doing it right or not, you're going to learn something and mistakes are part of the process. It's not a sign that you're doing something wrong. So, like, think of the first fitness class that either you taught or you walked into, or your first coaching client, if you're a coach, or maybe your first post on social media Gosh, go back and take a look at that and you're going to be like holy cow. What was I thinking, oh my gosh, but failure isn't the opposite of success, it's the path to success. But failure isn't the opposite of success, it's the path to success.

Speaker 1:

And some of my best lessons learned have been from not doing things well. I mean, you guys, I have majorly messed up. Those of you that are listening, you can probably think of one or two things where you're like, yeah, she really messed up there. If you're afraid of failing, you're probably also afraid of growing. You got to put yourself out there. You have to push yourself to get to that next level. So I feel like we should just normalize falling flat and pivoting and laughing at ourselves along the way. I feel like we should have learned that from COVID and then also just in our everyday lives, my gosh.

Speaker 1:

So I'd love for you to be the woman who tries things anyway, whether it's starting a new business, it's changing your habits, it's trying new supplements or, heck, maybe it's farming sheep. I don't know what your thing is. It's okay to not have it all figured out. And the ones you admire, they probably started messy too. I know I started way messy. Go back and listen to some of my first episodes. Go back and watch some of my first lives and even these.

Speaker 1:

You guys, if you are paying attention you hear me mess up all the time on here Give yourself permission to start before you're ready, whatever that might be, and I'd love for it to be something in the fitness world. I would love to know what classes you're starting, what your next fitness adventure is going to be, whether it's going to be a hike, it's going to be a run, it's going to be this or that. And, yes, we have to train for things, but don't be afraid, just get going and do it. So I wanted to mention that. Okay, now, speaking of just doing the thing, I have to tell you I am so fired up because I have a group of 10 guys who are all in for a three-month challenge. These guys said yes to making real changes Maybe they don't know that or not by building healthy habits, moving more, and soon we'll be digging into nutrition too, and I just want to say thank you to all those men for trusting me to help guide them, and I don't take that lightly.

Speaker 1:

We're not aiming to be perfect. We're aiming for better, more consistent, more energized and yeah, less creaky knees and mystery gut issues, yep, and here's the thing. While I was messaging them this weekend, I was like wait a second, why am I not doing this for a group of women too? So here's your official invitation. If you've been holding onto that stubborn five, 10 or more pounds that just won't budge, or if you're feeling more tired than a toddler after a bounce house party, if your joints hurt, your energy's tanked, or you just want to move better, feel lighter, eat better and drink the dang water, let's do it together. You don't have to show up perfect. I don't want you to be perfect. You just have to show up. I'll bring the plan, the guidance and the pep talks, and you bring the willingness to start messy, because that's where all good things begin. So message me if you're ready to jump in. Seriously, do the thing. Messy hair, unwashed face, still in your pajamas, I don't care. I'm here to help you become healthier and happier Just the best version of you. So let's go. Let's do this, all right, who's in?

Speaker 1:

Lastly, I just want to say thank you to all of you, all of you that have been sticking with me, listening to the episodes as soon as they come out. I love it. I publish them at 12 AM and I like waking up and I see that six or seven of you have already listened, and then a few hours later I see five or six of you more already listened. And then a few hours later, I see five or six of you more have listened, and I want to say thank you to those that have consistently listened to the podcast. It means the world to me, and I know that I haven't been promoting it as much and putting it out there. I've been doing this deep dive in Plexus and it's been amazing. I absolutely love it, but I love the podcast too. So it's not going anywhere. It's not going away. In fact, I am going to do a better job at my time management and make sure that I do promote it more and I get some more wonderful guests on.

Speaker 1:

I'll probably be taking a short break here pretty soon. I have my wine camp retreat coming up next week in fact, so I'm going to be busy with that. So I don't know exactly what my break looks like yet. Remember I took one last year too. I think it was just a week off. So I'm going to take probably a week, or maybe just put out some old episodes. So look for that, but just know that I will be back, and I'll be back with some wonderful guests. I have some ideas of people that I want to reach out to and those that I thought were going to be on and then fell through or they had something else come up, or whatever it might be. But I had some wonderful people on all the past episodes and they've just been. It's been fabulous and it's been so much fun and I haven't lost my enthusiasm for it. So I just wanted to let you know and I wanted to thank you. All right, so go pour something in your glass that makes you happy and I'll see you back here soon. Thank you for listening.
