Seasons of Change
Life comes at us in seasons - sometimes expected, sometimes catching us completely off guard. When my laptop died recently (amid other life changes), it got me thinking about how we constantly adapt to shifting circumstances, whether by choice or necessity.
Have you noticed how your preferences naturally evolve over time? My husband Dave started his wine journey with super-sweet apple wine and refused anything that wasn't ice-cold. Fast forward to today, and he exclusively enjoys dry reds with high tannins that create that distinctive pucker sensation! This transformation happened organically as he experienced more options and developed his palate. The same pattern appears in our fitness journeys - moving from circuit training to HIIT to strength training as we discover what truly resonates in each phase of life.
As a personal trainer for over two decades, I've been blessed with incredible long-term client relationships. But the ultimate goal isn't keeping people dependent on instructors forever. We want to equip you with knowledge and skills to customize your fitness journey independently. Each instructor offers unique verbal cues and teaching approaches that might click differently for different people. I can't count how many times clients have excitedly shared "new" insights from another instructor that I've actually been telling them for years! It finally resonated when delivered through a fresh perspective.
Our bodies also respond differently to training throughout the year. Understanding your Ayurvedic dosha constitution (vata, pitta, or kapha) can provide valuable insights into optimizing your routines based on seasonal changes. Whatever season you're in - whether taking a break or ramping up your efforts - embrace it fully and trust that each phase serves its purpose in your ongoing evolution. What season are you experiencing right now, and how are you adapting to it? Share your thoughts or join the conversation!

Hey friends, welcome back to the Spandex and Wine podcast. Did you miss my intro with my fancy music that I had, I know, and you're not going to hear the outro either, with the fancy music. And all of that Because, on top of everything that's happening in my life these past few weeks, good changes like nothing's bad. But my laptop decided to die, so, although I have everything backed up on an external hard drive, I don't have the software. So I still need to take the time to find some place to download the software to do my episodes. But like, okay, it just goes with the season in life, right? And so I was thinking about the seasons, because the temperature here in the Kansas City area has gone from summer and hot a few weeks ago to now. It feels like Halloween, and I'm like weeks ago to now. It feels like Halloween and I'm like what is happening? It is only the beginning of September, but it feels like I need to get my Halloween costume in order. And I just started watching four seasons on Netflix, which I'm probably late to the game on that. But seasons of life there, and it's just like your palette. With wine, too, you go through different seasons of life there, and it's just like your palate. With wine too, you go through different seasons of that.
Speaker 1:I remember when Dave started drinking wine he was holy, holy, sweet apple wine when we would go to Weston there in Riverside if you've never been to Riverside I think it's called Riverside, it's an old elementary school and that apple wine is what got him started on wine and he absolutely loved it and he progressed a little bit from that to a little bit drier of white, but it had to be ice cold, like he would not have anything other than crazy ice cold wine. And from he kind of went into like a Syrah and sorry, everyone's texting and it's coming across my car so anyway, pinot Noir. And then now he is into dry red wines to the point of he likes like that, the high tannins, he likes that pucker in the back of his mouth and I'm like, who are you? You started with apple wine. This is so crazy. But like I was going through a season of Pinot Grigio, sauvignon Blanc, and now he's drawn me back towards red wine, which has just been so delightful.
Speaker 1:But with with everything in your life, you go through seasons and you might be at a point where maybe it's wine and you're going through a season Maybe it's with your workouts and you were totally liking going to a circuit training class and now you're trying something different and you're doing more high intensity intervals, whatever it might be. You always have to find something that works for you and something that you like, and you're doing more high-intensity intervals, whatever it might be. You always have to find something that works for you and something that you like. I feel like, looking at what's given at the facility that you are training at, wonderful. Just take that and go with it and do the best that you can with that, but then, on your own workouts, make it your own.
Speaker 1:You don't have to go to a class to do high-intensity interval training. You don't have to go to a class to do circuit training. You don't have to go to a class to do strength training. I mean, I don't want to discount what I do for a living or what any other trainer does, but we are here to teach you and we are here to give you the tools.
Speaker 1:And I remember, when I was going through personal training school, my instructor, doc Gerald Larson. He would say that you don't want to keep a client for years and years and years and years, and I agree with that. But I have been holy cow. I've been blessed with clients that just yesterday I had brunch with clients that I have had for 15 years and I have had one client in particular for 23 years. So I've been blessed. But we really want to teach you how to do this on your own. So, as you're going through a class, I mean, really take note of what you can take away and do on your own. That would make us so happy to know that we taught you to do that and you're going to hear things differently from different instructors. I think it's important for you to go to different classes and to experience and hear their verbiage and hear their cueing, because we're going to say things differently and it's going to hit you differently. Oh my gosh, you guys. I don't know how many times clients and students have come back to me and they've said, oh well, this instructor said this. I'm like, yeah, I've been telling you that for seven years, but I'm excited that you're hearing it differently and now you're applying it. But I mean, we all wish you well and, like I said, we just all go through different seasons and just write it out and it's okay if you're in a place where you need to take a little more of a break or you're ready to ramp it up, and I'd also invite you to notice how everything changes with the season.
Speaker 1:I feel like I shared this episode last fall on, like the Ayurveda and the different seasons that you experience with your dosha constitution. I think it's so true, and if you want to explore that more, I'd love to have a conversation with you because it just fascinates me too. Are you a vata, are you a pitta, are you a kapha? Like? It's so interesting to me, and I think training at different times of the year with your constitution makes a huge difference too. So, yeah, you know I'm sorry that I can't find an episode where I can a hundred percent edit everything for today, but I'm just going to. I'm just going to share with you, like I have with, what is on my heart and it's going to happen every now and then, and I hope that you enjoy it and I hope you take something from it. And I'm sorry that you don't get to hear the intro and outro music. So here you go, love you all. Thanks so much for listening.
